We can always print US dollars to pay it off. US external debt from China is not as big as you think. China needs more of the US than the other way around.

No we can't just print US dollars to pay it off because the money of a country depends on the gold reserves of the country, printed currency cannot be more than the value of the country's gold reserves because that's against international monetary law set by the World Bank.
