K-12 education plan to be implemented in SY 2012-2013

Incoming high school freshmen to become Grade 7 next year

The Department of Education (DepEd) will implement the K+12 basic education program in academic year 2012-2013, starting with the conversion of first year high school to Grade 7.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said a curriculum had been created for Grade 7.

The K+12 basic education plan consists of kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grade 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school.

“In 2012, we will begin using the new curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 7 (first year of junior high school),” Luistro said in a forum at the Heritage Hotel the other day.

The Philippines is only one of two countries in the world — the other is Myanmar — that still implements a 10-year basic education system.

Because of this, foreign employers question the competency of Filipino professionals especially engineers, accountants and nurses.

Do you reckon that this K-12 will increase the chances of our graduates of getting their education recognized overseas?

"Do you reckon.."? Haha. "Nay. Perchance, do you frequently indulge yourself to crumpets and a cup of afternoon tea?"

Seriously, though, I think it was one of the requirements set forth by foreign employers. However, I think what's more important is that the K-12 graduates show enough competency so that local employers will be willing to employ even high school graduates. The results of the first few batches are key.

I do think this is good news.

for that to become relevant, the two senior years should be formatted to the US K12 System,

those who'd continue to college should take the 2 senior years advanced subjects for their courses,

those who think wont able to go to college yet, can take the 2 years vocational tract for employment.

  5. #5
uh oh, there's nothing saying about the vocational tract.

I see 3 problems which will arise from this K12 programs,

    1. More drop outs among the poor due to the increase expenditure,

    2. More congestion in public schools because of the extended 2 year stay of students, thus the increase of need to build more schools

    3. a shift of students from private to public schools thus more load and expenditure for the govt.

Mga iba pinapasa lang for the sake of giving them a diploma hay nako naman...

I want to give this a chance.

Sana gawan din ng paraan ayusin yung level of competency ng teachers at i-upgrade ang technical requirements sa pagtuturo i.e. kakulangan ng classrooms, obsolete or erroneous text books, no or not enough access to pc, et al.

Much can be gained from this change. We just have to remain open-minded.

    +1 I like. Retweet.

Parang no one will graduate from high school and therefore no one will enrol in Freshman year in College?

I don't know how you manage to easily discard the notion of one more year of learning. How pitiful.

If someone can't afford education and the expenses involved, you really expect that person to enroll in the first place? Drop-outs from the poor because of K12? Incredibly minimal at best.

    Devoid of reality and logic.

In the first place, many children are dumb these days because of the new values that they see in media every day. Focused on so many materials. Instead of focusing on critical thinking, media engages the Filipino people in cheap theatrics and telenovelas with shallow plots. Maybe for one day, you won't feel the effect; but if you make Philippine media your breakfast, lunch and dinner, well that's another story, that is of course aside from Facebook, Twitter, Internet, PSP, PC games, iPad, iPhone, Cellphone, DOTA and other channels on TV. If you find yourself spending so much time on the following items, you think kids would be any different?

Seriously, the more time you devote to developing your critical thinking, the faster you will be able to think. But of course when kids these days get home there are so many distractions other than studying which they prefer. If kids spend their time learning concepts every day, no, there wouldn't be an avalanche of stupidity today. Learning doesn't end in the classroom. It will never end there.

Have you spend time to observe the depth of posts on Facebook and Twitter by kids today? Obviously, the words you communicate constitute one indicator of intelligence and depth of thinking.
