POWER OF LOVE
There is no other power greater in this world than love, and Dong receives plenty of that through his family, friends, and of course,
sweetheart Marian Rivera. When we joke that she is the “First Lady of His Life,” he agrees with a smile. Dong speaks about Marian with fondness. He shares tidbits about their nuances as a couple, revealing that the lunch box he uses to carry his everyday baon was a gift from her, and his packed lunch of sweet potatoes and fi sh was lovingly prepared by Marian, even if she could easily have had
someone else fix the meal.
It’s far from how Marian is often portrayed by the media; the actress is a steady subject in blind items and nasty write-ups about her supposed attitude problem. “She’s human and we all have
sides that won’t be understood by many; you really can’t please everyone,” defends Dong. “At the end of the day she is still
successful; people love her and support her; she gets the projects that she deserves; and you can’t really please everyone.”
The couple’s bonding time often falls on weekends. They usually eat out (once a week at Gustavus, with prime rib eye steak as their
token dish of choice) and make the most out of the free time that they have together. Food is a passion they both share, and when
he isn’t dieting, Dong indulges in chicharon, lechon, and beer. When we wonder how Marian is able to stay slim, Dingdong lovingly
teases, “Sinasabi niya binabawas niya ang kanin sa gabi? Huwag kang maniwala doon; mas malakas pa nga kumain sa akin ‘yan; mahilig [siya] sa chocolates.”
Apart from food, another thing that the two enjoy doing is arnis, the
Philippines’ national martial art and sport.
