Kimi Räikkönen back in F1 with LRGP in 2012

Lotus Renault GP is pleased to announce that Kimi Räikkönen will race for the team next season. The 2007 World Champion, who left Formula 1 at the end of 2009 to pursue a career in rallying, has decided to make a comeback at the pinnacle of single-seater racing. He has now signed a two-year agreement with Lotus Renault GP.

Kimi’s F1 roll of honour includes 18 wins, 62 podiums and 16 pole positions. This experience and success is sure to help the team make a step forward next year. The 32-year-old Finn’s commitment indeed makes for a vote of confidence in Lotus Renault GP, demonstrating the team’s determination and new philosophy for the seasons ahead.

Kimi Räikkönen: “I’m delighted to be coming back to Formula 1 after a two-year break, and I’m grateful to Lotus Renault GP for offering me this opportunity. My time in the World Rally Championship has been a useful stage in my career as a driver, but I can’t deny the fact that my hunger for F1 has recently become overwhelming. It was an easy choice to return with Lotus Renault GP as I have been impressed by the scope of the team’s ambition. Now I’m looking forward to playing an important role in pushing the team to the very front of the grid.”

Gérard Lopez, Genii Capital, Chairman: “All year long, we kept saying that our team was at the start of a brand new cycle. Backstage we’ve been working hard to build the foundations of a successful structure and to ensure that we would soon be able to fight at the highest level. Kimi’s decision to come back to Formula 1 with us is the first step of several announcements which should turn us into an even more serious contender in the future. Of course, we are all looking forward to working with a world champion. On behalf of our staff, I’d like to welcome Kimi to Enstone, a setting that has always been known for its human approach to Formula 1.”

    Team changes
    • In June 2011, Williams announced that they would be using Renault engines for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, with an option to use Renault engines again in 2014 under the next generation of engine regulations. Renault had previously supplied engines to Williams from 1989 to 1997, when the team won four World Drivers' Championships and five World Constructors' Championships.
    • In July 2011, Virgin Racing split with Wirth Research mid-season after a technical review by former Renault F1 Team engineering director Pat Symonds found that Virgin's CFD-only approach had failed. The team also announced a technical partnership with McLaren that granted them access to McLaren's testing facilities as well as the purchase of Wirth Research facilities.
    • At the November 2011 meeting of the Formula One Commission in Geneva, several teams were given permission to change their names, pending final approval from the World Motorsports Council in December of that year:
      • Team Lotus will become Caterham F1 Team, reflecting team principal Tony Fernandes' purchase of Caterham Cars.
      • Lotus Renault GP will change their constructor and chassis names to Lotus, having been sponsored by Lotus Cars in 2010.
      • Virgin Racing will become Marussia F1 Team, reflecting increased ownership of the team by Russian car manufacturer Marussia Motors.

As a result of the name changes, Team Lotus and Lotus Renault GP declared that their ongoing dispute over the use of the Lotus name was over after they had reached an "amicable conclusion". Although the exact terms of the settlement were kept confidential, the joint statement detailed the transfer of the rights to the Lotus and Team Lotus names being transferred to Group Lotus' ownership.

    Driver changes
    • Pedro de la Rosa will return to Formula One with Hispania. De la Rosa has been without a full-time drive since the 2010 Italian Grand Prix, having spent the majority of the 2011 season as a test driver for McLaren.
    • After being injured in a rally accident shortly before the 2011 season, Robert Kubica spent the 2011 season recovering from his injuries. In November 2011, Kubica informed his team that he would not be ready to start the 2012 season. Renault team principal Éric Boullier has indicated that he would be prepared to make a seat available for Kubica mid-season if and when Kubica is prepared to return.
    • Charles Pic — who placed fourth in the 2011 GP2 Series driving for Addax — will join Marussia, replacing Jérôme d'Ambrosio.

I think Petrov will be on his way out despite having a contract with Lotus Renault for next year. Or he could be demoted to test driver.
Romain Grosjean will probably take his seat, to be replaced by Kubica by mid-season, assuming the Pole returns.

Finally, after the looong wait Kimi will be back!

Grosjean is to pair with Raikkonen

Romain Grosjean will race alongside Kimi Raikkonen at Renault next season, when the team becomes Lotus. It will be Grosjean’s second spell competing for the Enstone squad, the Frenchman having made seven Grand Prix starts for them in 2009, and leaves their 2011 drivers Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna without confirmed seats.

“I am thrilled to be one of the team’s race drivers in 2012,” said Grosjean. “There’s a big grin on my face at the prospect of getting behind the wheel of next year’s car, and I feel very privileged to be given this opportunity. To be racing alongside a former world champion and someone who is hungry and returning to Formula One will be a great experience, and I’m sure will help raise my level of performance too.”

Grosjean, 25, won this year’s GP2 Series. Prior to that he was a title winner in F3 Euroseries and the GP2 Asia Series before graduating to the Renault F1 team in 2008 as a test driver. Following that, he stepped up to a race seat for the second half of 2009 following Nelson Piquet Junior’s departure. This season he made Friday practice appearances for the team in Abu Dhabi and Brazil.

“I feel that my successful season in GP2 Series has helped me mature a lot, and I am a much more complete driver than I was last time I was competing in this sport,” continued Grosjean. “Returning to Enstone as a race driver feels like coming home. I will not disappoint and I wish to thank all the people without whom this return to F1 would not have been possible. Total, which supports me since 2006, and Gravity Sport Management, are first on this list.”

Renault had hoped that star driver Robert Kubica might be fit to return for 2012, but with continuing uncertainty over when the Pole will complete his recovery from his February rally crash, the team felt obliged to finalise their line-up for the start of the new season.

“I’m delighted that Romain Grosjean will be beside Kimi next year,” commented team principal Eric Boullier. “Romain has shown a lot of maturity in the past 12 months both through his GP2 Series victory and his development as third driver with us. We were impressed when he drove for us in the first practice sessions in Abu Dhabi and Brazil.

“We are confident that drafting him in to one of our driver’s seats will help us in our rebuilding process. I would like to thank Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna for their contribution to the team’s performance this year and I wish them all the best for the future.”

Petrov began his F1 race career with Renault in 2010 and this year finished 10th in the championship, securing a podium finish in Australia. Former HRT racer Senna was drafted in for 2011’s final eight rounds after the team dropped Nick Heidfeld. The Brazilian’s best result was ninth place in Italy.

Grosjean’s announcement, which was accompanied by confirmation that backers Total have renewed their sponsorship agreement with Renault for another year, means just six 2012 race seats remain unconfirmed - two at Force India and Toro Rosso, and one apiece at Williams and HRT.

Toro Rosso announce Ricciardo & Vergne for 2012

Toro Rosso have revealed a completely new driver line-up for next season, with Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo and France’s Jean-Eric Vergne replacing 2011 drivers Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari.

Both Ricciardo and Vergne have come through the Red Bull Junior Driver programme and the decision to promote them was taken by Toro Rosso in conjunction with Red Bull.

Twenty-two year-old Ricciardo, from Perth, drove for Toro Rosso during Friday’s first free practice sessions at Grands Prix in the early part of 2011, before competing full time for HRT in the second half of the year.

“This is a really big deal for me and something I have wanted ever since I was driving for Toro Rosso on Friday mornings at the races in the first part of last season,” he said. “To be honest, I am still jumping up and down with excitement at the news.”

Ricciardo previously won the Formula Renault 2.0 Championship in 2008 and the following year he won the British Formula Three series. In 2010, he finished runner-up in the Formula Renault 3.5 series, combining his racing with reserve driver duties for both Red Bull F1 teams.

“In the second half of 2011 I learned a lot from the people I worked with, racing in 11 Grands Prix and I want to thank them for the opportunity they gave me,” he added. “I have to say that joining Scuderia Toro Rosso was always my real goal, so a big thank you to Red Bull for giving me this fantastic opportunity and now I can’t wait to get to work once testing begins.”

Vergne too has already worked with Toro Rosso, most recently driving in Free Practice One at three of the last four Grands Prix of the 2011 season. The 21 year-old followed in his new team mate’s footsteps, winning the 2010 British Formula Three Championship and coming second in this year’s Formula Renault 3.5 series.

“First of all, I must thank Red Bull for all their support so far and for believing I am ready to take on the ultimate challenge of racing in Formula One,” said Vergne. “Christmas has come early for me this year! Having driven for them a few times this year and also testing for Red Bull Racing in Abu Dhabi, I definitely feel ready to make the move, even if I know there is a big difference between testing and actually racing. I enjoyed working with the guys at Toro Rosso this year and I can’t wait to be part of the team for real. Sitting on the grid in Melbourne next March cannot come soon enough.”

Commenting on his 2012 signings, Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost said: “I am pleased that we have been able to reach an early decision on our drivers for next year, because it means we can all give our full attention to 2012, without any distractions. Over the past year, both Daniel and Jean-Eric have proved their worth and I expect them to make a significant contribution to the team’s performance next year.

“Daniel has the benefit of having actually raced in Grands Prix for much of this year, while Jean-Eric proved he could adapt quickly to the demands of driving a Formula One car. As they have both worked with the team and its engineers very recently, this should allow us to get up to speed right from the start of winter testing in a couple of months’ time.”

Tost also paid tribute to his departing 2011 drivers, both of whom now face an uncertain Formula One future. Swiss Buemi had been at Toro Rosso since making his F1 debut with the team in 2009, while Spaniard Alguersuari joined midway through the same season, also as a rookie.

“I must also thank Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari for all their hard work over the past three seasons,” said Tost. “They have delivered some excellent performances which have helped the team move forward and develop. We wish them well for the future.

"However, one has to remember that when Scuderia Toro Rosso was established in 2005, it was done so with the intention of providing a first step into Formula One for the youngsters in the Red Bull Junior Driver programme. It is therefore part of the team’s culture to change its driver line-up from time to time in order to achieve this goal.”

Hulkenberg joins Di Resta in Force India's 2012 line-up

Force India have announced that Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg will race for the team in 2012. Di Resta made his F1 debut with the Silverstone-based squad this season, whilst ex-Williams racer Hulkenberg steps up from his position as third driver to replace the outgoing Adrian Sutil.

“I am delighted to present our line-up for the 2012 season,” said Force India team principal and managing director Dr Vijay Mallya. “In Paul and Nico we have two extremely talented drivers with tremendous potential. I think Paul caught the eye of everybody in the pit lane during his rookie season.

“His speed, maturity and race craft confirmed that we were right to believe in him and we look forward to working with him again next year. As for Nico, we identified him as a rising star at the end of 2010 and chose to evaluate him during the course of this season. Despite having only limited time in the car, he convinced us that he deserved a race seat for 2012.”

Di Resta enjoyed a remarkable maiden campaign in the sport in 2011. As well as regularly outpacing then team mate Sutil, the young Scot finished the year as the top rookie driver after scoring 27 points on his way to 13th in the standings. A highlight was his sixth-place grid slot for his home race at Silverstone.

“I’m really looking forward to my second season of Formula One and continuing to grow and develop with Sahara Force India,” said the 25 year-old. “I’ve said all along that I love being part of this team: they are ambitious, hungry for success and we work well together.

“I’m really excited about 2012 and there is a real sense of belief that we can continue to push the top teams and take another step forward. I’d also like to thank the team for all their hard work this year and for all the support they’ve given me. I’ll take some time out over the next few weeks to recharge my batteries and hopefully come back even stronger in 2012.”

Hulkenberg spent the 2011 season on the bench as the team’s third driver, although he did enjoy practice session runs at 14 of the year’s 19 Grands Prix. A year earlier the German enjoyed a stellar debut season at Williams, scoring 22 points and a pole position at the Brazilian Grand Prix, but was forced to make way for Pastor Maldonado at the British team for 2011.

“I’m obviously delighted to be staying with Sahara Force India and to be given the chance to race next year,” explained the 24 year-old. “It wasn’t easy to watch from the side lines this season, but I did my best to help the team and show what I was capable of.

“I’m extremely motivated for 2012 and would like to thank everyone for believing in me and giving me this chance. I’m keen to get down to work over the winter to develop our new car and help the team build on this year’s achievements. The first test in Jerez can’t come soon enough.”

Force India’s announcement means that Sutil will leave for pastures new after six years with the team. Sutil’s tenure saw the team change name (and management personnel) from Midland to Spyker and finally to Force India in 2008. In total the 28 year-old scored 95 world championship points for the outfit, enjoying a career-best finish of fourth at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix.

Mallya paid tribute to the departing German, saying: “Our new line-up means we say ‘goodbye’ to Adrian Sutil, who has been with the team since we entered the sport. He has been an integral part of our success over the past four seasons and we wish him well for the future.”

There are two slots left on the 2012 grid that Sutil could in theory fill, with seats at Williams and HRT still vacant.

I just hope it will be multi-driver title race this year, total domination is boring, we have so many good drivers, the sport would be much better by an exciting title race
