If we weren't colonized by the Spaniards, would we end up a better country?

Napansin ko lang, almost all countries colonized by Spaniards during the new world are considered third world right now. Except for Spain, all former Spanish colonies and predominantly Catholic countries with a vast Spanish history have been struggling economy-wise.

I agree. I don't know if the culprit is Catholicism or the Spaniards. Or both.

Without Spanish conquest there would be no Philippines as a single country. No brainer!

yes. we would have been much better off without the 300 crummy years of spanish misrule. of their former colonies, only venezuela is wealthy because it has oil. all the rest are poor. only people who aren't well educated or suffer from a hopeless colonial mentality are happy that we were colonized by spain.

If we weren't colonized by the Spanish, then the Portuguese would. Then the Dutch.

What if we weren't colonized by the US? Or Japan?

Mas maganda kung naging colony na lang tayo ng Britain nuon. Tignan mo ngayon puro mga first world countries at mauunlad ang mga former colony nila (US, Canada, Australia, Hongkong, Malaysia, Singapore) except lang sa mga African countries

    Chile is an exception.

A local historian argued that Spanish colonization was actually a blessing for the Philippines. He said that before 1521, while China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries were engaging in massive trade, cultural exchange, arts and culture development, the Philippines was practically ignored by these countries. The Philippines was left to become "the land of savages and snakes" and he believed it would have continued to do so if the Spanish didnt arrive. Only when the Spanish came did our neighboring Asian countries took notice of the Philippines.

But gradeschool history taught us that during the prehispanic times, we were already trading with the Chinese, Arabs and Malays.

    So false history din yon?

    Sorry, I really hate history.

We'd just end up getting colonized by another country.

Or we'd turn into a Muslim dominated country.

I don't think that's anywhere accurate. Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam were French colonies. Indonesia is a Dutch colony. Thailand has not been colonized thus the name Thailand or free land. Brazil was a Portuguese colony. There are many parts of Africa that were colonized by these Europeans as well. These countries are all third world. You can't single out Spain.

We would have been better off being colonized by the British. Singapore and Malaysia were British colonies.

Many former British colonies in Africa are also poor. Poorer than the Philippines.

I'm not so sure if being colonized by the Brits would have been good for us either. They didn't colonize us but they screwed us anyway by taking Sabah from the Sultanate of Sulu and handing it over (via plebescite kuno) to the Malaysians.

If you look at history, the Brits are responsible for many of the religious, political, territorial disputes that still plague many countries today, especially in the Middle East. They have a knack for redrawing borders, creating new territories and leaving the poor locals to sort and fight it among themselves later.

BTW, the Brits were able to land and occupy a part of Manila & Cavite from 1762-1764 but were unable to expand their conquest. It is said that many of their Indian mercenaries (Sepoys) deserted and settled in what is now Cainta, Rizal.

Well, marami siguro tayong in common with many African countries

You've discounted the Brits failures and then tell us they never failed?

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, and New Guinea were also former British colonies. If you look at the British Empire as a whole, there are more failures than there are success. It's because the primary purpose of colonizing a nation is to exploit the colony for everything that is worth and bring it back to their home nation.

Some would say that the reason Singapore, Hongkong, and Malaysia are economically successful is because of the Chinese.
