    Geology or Geological Engineering?

I'm currently in fourth year high school, and I passed the entrance examination in Mapua, with Geology as my preferred choice, but fortunately, I passed several other courses. Now, I'm thinking, what's the difference between Geology or Geological engineering? What should I take between the two?

I don't know if there's a thread like this already, and if there is, I'm sorry, but please answer my question. Is Geological Engineering actually better than Geology itself?

I need advice, because I'm choosing to apply either Geology or Geological Engineering in Mapua.

Uh, and on a lighter note, if one graduates from Geological Engineering, he/ she's still a called a geologist, right?

    Well, I think that's all . . . thanks in advance!

I think there's a double-degree program for Geology and Geological Eng'g, I suggest you just opt to enroll that.

^Thanks. That's what I'm talking about, yung double degree nila. Yan po yung 2 choices ko. So you think I should take the double degree? It's weighing in my mind too. Thanks for answering!

^I think I'm going to take that one up . . . Still, I'm a bit confused about the sole difference between the two. Kunwari, 'pag graduate ako ng Geological Engineering, I can be employed on the jobs for Geology graduates, right? I think I'm not making any sense . . . Pero simply put, this is what I've gathered: that Geological Engineering has an edge compared to Geology (although I think it's quite obvious). Is the course difficult? I hope someone can enlighten me, by giving a few examples of the subjects that one ought to take in G.Engr. Thanks.

Yup, you are also eligible to take the board exam for geologist.

Eng'g na wala sa BS Geo ay mostly engineering subjects gaya ng mechanics (statics, dynamics, strength), geotechnical engg subjects, engg economy, design, and a math subject which is differential equations.

Thanks for your answers! Now I want to take up the double degree all the more. Is Geology your course?

I have a few more questions, guys. Approximately how much is the double degree? And how long does it take to finish the course, 5 years? What if study under the QuarTerm system . . .? Thanks, and sorry if I have numerous inquiries.

Yup. Geological Engineering and Geology to be exact.

I forgot to mention earlier na ang GEO curriculum ay meron nang OJT and another petrology subject which is Igneous and metamorphic petrology.

If laging naka full load at walang bagsak, you can finish GE in about 4 years and 1 term while GEO is about 3 years and 2 terms.

It's that expensive? How long did you study po? And approximately magkano per sem? Forgive me if I have so many questions...

Umm, are you working po? Kung yes po, what kind of work? Sorry if I'm being personal... But I want to have an idea.

  17. #17
It depends kung ilang units ang gusto mong kunin. Kung 15 units, it ranges from 32k to 37k. It also depends sa number of laboratory subjects.

Nope. I'm currently finishing my thesis. Pero last term may nagoffer na sa akin ng job ang isang mining company as a geologist pero tinangihan ko muna kasi priority ko kasi muna na ang thesis namin.

It depends on you kung saang industry mo gustong pumasok kasi ang geologist kailangan sa oil industry, mining na nagboboom ngayon, groundwater exporation, assessment of geohazards sa mga civil infrastructures, etc. if you want to enter the private sector.
