    Sit-in students

Hiya! I would like to ask for any of your experiences (third-person or first person) on whether or not professors in UP Diliman allow students who are not officially enrolled into the professor's class to sit-in and listen to the lectures.

Back when I was an undergrad in Ateneo de Manila University, I asked for permission from a teacher to sit-in, but I got kicked out because the reason I had for sitting-in was, "Sir, kasi malakas po ang ulan sa labas eh! *sabay paawa face* Wala po kaming tambayan!" All the while, the two stooges that were my fellow blockmates with me suddenly giggled and hooted a loud laugh. Funny thing was, I didn't know then what I did wrong XD

Yeah, but the main question is, do professors generally allow non-enrolled students to sit-in at the UP?

Nung undergrad usually I sit it after the first week of class para walang roll call at para hindi mahalatang sit-in ako. Minsan, nahuli din akong sit in and it was fine with the prof. But sa lahat ng nasitin-an ko wala akong klase na tinapos the whole sem. In grad school, I have classmates na sit in for the whole sem. Kaunti lang kasi students kaya maraming bakanteng upuan, and there's this philosophy that "grad students and profs consider each other as colleagues" so profs dont mind sharing what they know even to non-students. Its ok din if sit-in students interact in class.

With that, I dont think your reason was valid at all. You sit-in because there's vacant space AND you want to learn.

Awesome! What about asking permission in advance from the professor, would that be advisably done during the first day of classes or the second day of classes? What do you do though when there's a quiz or exam? Do you just sit there quietly?

That's the thing too, it would be nice to be able to finish the whole duration of the course but I don't think it would be fair to get free education while the students in the class paid to study. Thus the question.

Haha, I knew what I did wrong a minute after I got kicked out of the room, particularly after consulting my friends, asking why they laughed out loud XD. Something good came out though! Whenever the prof and I see each other though, we share a laugh and he'd joke and say... "IT'S YOUUUU!"

This time, I want to sit in because I want to learn

Yep, asking permission is the most appropriate thing to do. Sa akin lang kasi, I want to make it as discreet as possible.

Re quizzes, I cant answer that. Kasi I started sitting in on advanced/major subjects at sa course ko, they don't usually have quizzes, only probsets. Hehe. Pero kung grad school ka, (judging from "when I was an undergrad in Ateneo ... "), I don't think profs give quizzes. Not sure though, at least in my program, that's usually the case.

Hahaha, nice yun, para maging ninja! I just have this sinking feeling if I do make it in discreetly (like a ninja!) and blend in, maybe the prof'll zone in on me and ask if I have paid.

Ooooh, anong major mo? math ba to or anything related to engineering kaya problem set?

Yup! ^_^ I'm an MA student in Creative Writing, starting this semester, planning to sit-in at a course of my degree major (Computer Science) or Journalism (undergrad courses in Journalism though)

What CS courses are you sitting in? Undergrad or graduate? Kung undergrad, I'd imagine that you'll have a difficult time looking for a class to sit in dahil madalas occupied lahat ng seats. That might have changed though because I already graduated nearly 2 years ago.

Kung graduate naman, a lot of the classes ay pang-gabi.

I can't imagine the profs rejecting sit-ins but, yeah, if you're planning to do it for an entire semester you might as well ask for permission na rin out of courtesy.

Masaya naman talaga mag-sit in. Lalo na kung ginagawa mo 'toh just to see your crush. Hahah!

Pakapalan lang naman yan ng mukha eh.

Pwede magsit-in kung kakilala ka ng prof. Kung hindi parang alangan. Baka mapalabas ka pa.

This sem magsisit-in nga ako sa isa sa mga graduate subjects in preparation for my Ph.D. studies overseas.

  9. #9
Its really more of courtesy than not paying for the subject (that's a very narrowminded view of education).

nag sisit-in ako dati sa mga terror prof sa math. i don't have to name them. worth-it, parang nareview ka lang sa enrolled class mo. GC masyado. hahaha

I've tried it before, "swim-in" sa swimming class.

terror prof ba si Mia? well, sa kanya ako nagsi-sit in during Math100 times. medyo fast track kasi yung approach sa amin noon ni Betty, kaya naguluhan ako.

bale 8-9am nun yung Math100 ko, tapos yung class ni Mia, 9-10. eh since vacant din naman ako, lumilipat lang din ako sa klase niya para maki-aral. nakikita din naman niya ako kahit walang paalam, and i guess it was okay naman with her. mabait nga eh. maganda pa. hihi. ^^,

Saturday class na CS 197 Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics. By the 1st batch run, only one person has enlisted in the subject.

Puros, Inquirer, or PStar, named sila after broadsheets

hey, some people could argue that it's a lost profit (I've joined a workshop before where the student was told to come back after he had paid the full amount, after sitting through 3/4 of the workshop and paying around 1/4 the fee). Yeah, but i do realize the payment schemes of universities to professors are different, so it might be different

Lalo na ngayon, sa uso ang mga open coursewares -- you learn for the sake of learning, kahit walang credits. Hehe. Yup, iba-iba nga ang payment schemes, and its almost impossible to quantify how much we actually pay to the prof. Some profs have a fixed salary, it is assumed that they carry a full load, regardless of the actual number of units they teach and the number of students they handle, ie we cant say na mas mahal sa prof na mas kaunti ang estudyante.

Anyway, this topic is making me regret my undergrad days. Sana nagsit in ako nung marami akong vacant time.

But yeah, swerte lang siguro ako bihira ako masita, at never to the point na pinagbawalan akong pumasok ng klase. Ask permission first, although nakakatamad at nakakahiya.

Ah elective class? I bet walang lab component 'yan. Hehe. Check mo 'yung type ng class kung naka-indicate lab or lec. AFAIK lower-level classes lang ang may lab. Classroom setting mostly 'yung higher subjects and electives.

Kasi marami akong barkada sa Fine Arts, they tell me pag babae yung model nila sa nude sketching/drawing session.
