the new format was designed to benefit the 2 MVP-bankrolled teams
not the 1st time that happened![]()
walang kwenta PCCL pabago bago ng format, kaya konti lang nanonood. dapat kasi US NCAA format gamitin sa finals. Or FIBA Style 4 groups, after the 1st round elimination, 2 groups 2nd round of eliminations, then quarterfinals, semis and finals.
masyadong obvious kung sino gustong paglabanin sa finals,
WALANG KWENTA PCCL, sana langawin kayo sa ticket sales at wala kayong TV rating
BUWISIT!!!!!!?????$$$$@@@@
they tried the sixteen teams single elimination tourney but they hadn't perfected it. ang problema kasi kung saan mo ilalagay ang CESAFI team and whether they deserve a top 4 seed (presumably the top 2 UAAP & NCAA teams get the 4 of top 5 seeds, with one seed going to the CESAFI team). furthermore, they can't determine on how the teams will be seeded.
BTW, only 2 CESAFI teams are qualified; even those that made it to the playoffs won't be invited to the vismin zonals. i guess this is the punishment to UC w/c sent an extremely crappy team at the universiade -- yes the same tourney DLSU supposedly qualified to 3 years ago!![]()
makagawa nga ng blog post tungkol dito re: tourney format. noong nag post ako ng seeding playoffs at sweep rules nagbago ng policy ang UAAP. tinanggal na nila ang seeding playoffs for #1 and #3. may pag-asa pa. as if.![]()
Tutal ginaya naman sa Eurobasket, why not draw some lots. Of course seeded na ilang team.
32 teams, 8 groups with 4 teams each. Top two in each division advanced in the knockout format and make the Finals a best-of-three.
the premise of this tourney is to be like the NCAA in the states. single elimination tourney that lasts a month. it would've not made sense for 32 teams in groups. 3/4 of the games would've been 100-25 blowouts.
maayos na ang 16-team tourney dati hindi lang nila ma-perfect ang seeding process, and the number of provincial teams.
Beneficiary ng format ngayon - Ateneo, San Beda, Cesafi/Visayas/Mindanao teams.
Tingnan mo naman pagdadaanan ng North/Central Luzon, Metro Manila and South Luzon/Bicol...
When did they release the format? Before or after ADMU became champs?
You can't really say that the new format is to benefit SBC. After all, the format was revealed during the Finals. The other team with ADMU could have been San Sebastian if they're the one who won.
it's a foregone conclusion ADMU will win it this year. on the NCAA front it was supposedly a closer race but it's sure from the get-go SBC and SSC will meet in the finals again. hence SBC only has to fulfill its part of the bargain to make sure the MVP teams will benefit from the new format.
well at least this was not as blatant as what happened on 2006![]()
Boring ang format. Gusto may draw para may hulog.Pero invitational nga naman so bahala ka. Sana lang mas marami manood. The only time I watched parang nanood ka lang ng preseason tournament sa San Beda or Arellano gym. Ok nga lang you could be close to sports legends like Joel Lipa.
Some reasons why the Philippine Collegiate Champions League never really lived up to its billing.
First a brief background.
This tournament was patterned after the NCAA Division I basketball tournament in the United States when it was institutionalized in 2002. The top schools in the country go up against other university and colleges that they do not really face regularly. And just like in the US, the league uses a knockout format so one loss means go home even for the top-ranked teams.
For UAAP/NCAA schools, this is a chance for them to extend their dominance and prove that they are indeed the top basketball schools in the country. For other Metro Manila-based schools, the Champions League is the perfect stage to outshine their fancied UAAP/NCAA counterparts. And as for schools from Visayas and Mindanao, this tournament will allow them to strut their wares on national television.
Sounds great right? Sadly it did not turn out as it was supposed to.
Now for the reasons.
The Big Difference
No I'm not referring to the great Caloy Loyzaga but the major distinction between the Philippine Collegiate Champions League and the US NCAA. In the US, all colleges and universities are under the NCAA. Yes, schools play in their respective conferences (ACC, Big East, Pac-10, etc..) but all are under one big umbrella. And the aim of every school is not just to win a conference title but also to book a place in the tournament proper (Top 64 but now extended to 68 teams). In fact, winning a conference title is not really a big deal especially for those in the powerhouse leagues like the ACC and Big East as they have additional slots in the Big Dance. However, teams playing in smaller conferences must win the title to qualify for the tournament proper as only the champion squad is given an automatic berth. Schools look forward to the NCAA tournament aka March Madness after the regular season.
Here, things are different. Schools are governed by the conference itself and not by one big institution. So the target of every school is to win its respective conference and nothing else. A school's title quest practically ends after its conference concludes. In other words, winning the Champions League is just an additional minor title for a champion team and a consolation for non-conference winners
Significance
As mentioned above, the only thing that matters for schools here in the Philippines is winning their respective league titles. So its safe to say that it is acceptable for Ateneo not to win the Champions League but an epic failure if they do not win the UAAP.
In its early years, UAAP and NCAA teams did not even take the Champions League seriously. They played in their practice uniforms and fielded reserve players. Some star players even begged off, opting to take a rest or concentrate on their studies. Only teams from other Metro Manila-based leagues and those from Visayas and Mindanao were eager to play in front of national TV.
No Following
After the conference concludes, fans and players alike take a break. So when the Champions League starts, it is hardly felt as fans are still in vacation mode or are already looking forward to next season. Some of the players, meanwhile, have turned professional by the time the Champions League unfolds. Since the league only started about a decade ago, there's really no rivalry of sorts. Not even the famed ADMU-DLSU rivalry in the UAAP can translate into success in the PCCL.
Schedule
The PCCL's schedule is as confusing as let's say, driving in a crowded street in Metro Manila. Games are held on odd days (presumably due to the availability of gyms) and sometimes a quarterfinal and a semifinal game are held on the same day.
It would have been much better if the tournament was held in one venue for a certain number of days. Example, Cebu Coliseum hosting all eight first round games in the first two days then stage the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals in the succeeding days. Now that would be more fun to watch. Just stick to the old Last 16 format.
Format
This is perhaps the biggest factor why nobody really cared about the Champions League. Changing tournament formats every year is just a big turn off for many viewers. In its inaugural year, the Last 16 format was used. However, the organizers changed it in the succeeding years and gave seedings and automatic entries to top-ranked clubs, practically killing the thrill of seeing a David slaying a Goliath. Last year, they did the unthinkable by giving University of Cebu an automatic semifinal berth just to give Junmar Fajardo TV exposure. This year, SBC and ADMU were seeded into the semifinals while the others will go through a stepladder format. You could just imagine what organizers are thinking about for next year.![]()
The price money is big. Ilan ba ang price money sa UAAP? For me this tournament should be continued.Kung wala ito baka di narecruit si Slaughter or makita potential ni Junmar Fajardo.
ABS-CBN (who owned Studio 23) please just plug this tournament. And hoping for a draw para wala na rason mga teams na magsabi na "vacation mode" kami, injury, roster loss, PBA at ang pinakagrabeng rason? Jet Lag.(travel lag mas ok pa). Suggestion, rotate the venue. Di lang taga-Manila ang nanonood. I heard some of the games outside of Manila, talagang tinatao.
alam ko trophy lang sa UAAP. actually para may sense naman itong tourney, kung matalo ka, ibibigay mo yung trophy na nakuha mo this year sa nakatalo sa iyo. ok sana kung single elimination ito in the final game many trophies, aside from MVP's trophy and the cash prize, will be disputed. imagine SBC winning against ADMU in the finals and they get to carry ADMU's UAAP trophy.
yes, the lone provincial game last year(?) (either it was UST or MIT vs a cebuano team) was well-attended... in ormoc.
in fact i suggest they hold the 3 sets of final 4 games (round robin kasi) one each in luzon, visayas and mindanao. tapos yung finals sa maynila na unless the CESAFI team makes it to the finals, yung may home court advantage yung taga-manila, pero ok na rin kung sa mindanao ang game 3 kung meron para neutral venue![]()
Sa totoo lang medyo ganito ang format ng mga national intercollegiate at secondary championships nuong BAP pa ang nagpapapatakbo ng mga ganitong klaseng tournaments. At that time yung format medyo based sa mga international tournaments.
another year, another format? no wonder the PCCL is not taken seriously..walang maayos na sistema
In fairness to the organizers, they're just trying to survive. Their previous formats didn't work. So ayan, trial and error.
So ang format this year, set up for the UAAP and the NCAA champs para magtapat sila for the Finals. If hindi pa din mag-work yan, eh wala na.
Hopefully, teams will take this tourney seriously.
