“When you look within the Windows Phone ecosystem and compare how the
Lumia performs, there we have a contractual agreement with Microsoft for a
certain amount of engineering which we can use for differentiation. However,
we have to be very careful on how we use that one because we cannot fragment
the developer ecosystem. If that starts forking, that’s not useful at all. We made
the decision to go to Windows Phone when Mango was pretty much done, so we
were able to impact some elements of it but you’ll really see the fruits of what we
can do with Microsoft when the Apollo version of Windows Phone comes out.”

Kantar: Windows Phone climbs to 3-4% market share in major markets,
may have overtaken Blackberry in USA

Market research company Kantar WorldPanel has revealed in the last 12 weeks to mid-April Windows Phone has shown strong growth in the 7 major markets they monitor on the strength of Nokia’s offerings.

In 5 of the 7 markets (Germany, Britain, Italy, France and United States) Windows Phone market share is now in the 3-4% range, up from less than 2% in January 2012. In Germany Windows Phone market share more than doubled year on year to 6%.

In contrast RIM saw its US market share collapse to just 3% from 9% a year earlier, suggesting Windows Phone may have matched or even passed RIM’s market share in USA.

Kantar has predicted in January Windows Phone market share may hit 10% in Europe in the second half of 2012, and it seems to me with more Windows Phones being announced all the time that this may very well be achievable.

Kantar: Windows Phone has overtaken Symbian in UK
March 20, 2012

New Kantar Worldpanel data from Tuesday has shown Windows Phone overtaking Symbian in the UK. Although both were now small, Windows Phone was up to 2.5 percent of the British cellphones sold in the three months leading up to mid-February where Symbian had dropped to 2.4 percent. Much of that could be credited to the Nokia Lumia 800, which in Europe made up 87 percent of all Windows Phone sales.

Windows Phone ranks below Bada in worldwide sales

The worldwide market share of Windows Phone, which has struggled to gain traction, fell in the first quarter this year, putting it behind Samsung's Bada operating system, which runs phones sold in international and emerging markets.

That's according to research firm Gartner, which says the share of smartphones running Microsoft's operating systems -- including Windows Phone and the outdated Windows Mobile -- fell from 2.6 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to 1.9 percent in the first quarter of 2012.

That puts Microsoft's smartphones in sixth place behind market leaders Android with 56.1 percent and Apple's iOS with 22.9 percent.

Windows Phone takes China by storm–already 7% market share, ahead of iPhone

It seems Microsoft was right however, with Michel van der Bel, COO Greater China Region at Microsoft saying that a mere 2 months after the launch Windows Phone 7 handsets already had a 7% market share in China, ahead of the 6% of the iPhone there.

"We have only just begun," he noted, saying he expects the synergies between Windows 8 tablets and Windows Phone will power even more growth.

“Our smartphone and tablet-pc are hybrid, making them suitable for the consumer, but also easy to insert within an existing company infrastructure. This will allow us to better anticipate the consumerization of IT than many competitors. "

Windows Phone recently ovetook the iPhone in Russia also, making for a trend we can certainly appreciate.

Game developers love iOS and Android, but WP surprises

The survey is courtesy of Game Developer magazine and as you might expect nearly all (94.6%) of the developers questioned are working on or have games for iOS.

Android comes in second with 70.7% of developers working on the platform, and it's hard to say exactly why the number would be that low.

The big surprise for us was actually with Windows Phone, where 8.8% of developers said they were working on the platform.
BlackBerry (2.7%), Symbian (2%), and bada (1.4%) round out the survey, but none garners any real interest among developers.
