AT&T Is Winning an iPhone Battle It Doesn't Even Want to Win
    Apr 24, 2012

"The carriers are tired of Apple calling all the shots," writes Chen. Those shots include the whole subsidy issue, which, as the earnings report details has gotten worse for AT&T. Because of these subsidies, AT&T's operating margin income has dropped from 30 percent two years ago to 27.2 percent. But since the phone sells so well, AT&T doesn't have much bargaining power. "Carriers have very little leverage with Apple now. If the iPhone market keeps growing, pretty soon they’re going to have no leverage at all," Kuittenen told Chen. These companies also worry that Apple has too much control over all the money-making aspects of the phone biz. Apple now makes the hardware and the software and it sells the apps. All that's left for the carriers is bandwidth, an admittedly essential part of phone use.

Analysts lower expectations on Windows Phone sales
    April 26, 2012

    • IDC
Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team, says his firm has slightly lowered its estimate of Windows Phone's marketshare to 20.1% in 2016. While not a large decline from the original 20.9% share forecast, it is enough to keep Windows Phone from topping iOS by that year.

    • IHS
IHS senior analyst in wireless communications, Wayne Lam, says his firm has "ratcheted back" its prediction of Windows Phone sales and now expects the OS to trail both Android and iOS in 2015 instead of fitting between the two. In January, Lam wrote that the Nokia Lumia 900 launch was the start of a "renaissance" for both Microsoft and Nokia. Lam predicted that Windows Phone would have a 16.7% slice of the smartphone pie by 2015, slipping past the 16.6% share he estimated would belong to iOS in that year.

The analysts still see Windows Phone as being a successful consumer device. IDC's Llamas specifically mentions the Nokia Lumia 900 as having a strong UI and user experience comparable to the Apple iPhone or many Android devices. Originally, analysts estimated that 30-40 million Windows Phones would be sold in 2012, but with sales not up to forecasts so far this year, it is going to require more than just the Nokia Lumia 900 to get Windows Phone sales to that level.

it is not an icon. they are live tiles. they change when there is an update (depends on app type).

I do not think the static icon will be possible. Live tiles make windows phone unique and intelligent.

if you want tweak the live tiles, watch below.

AT&T, Verizon 'Sick of Taking Orders from Apple'

Yankee Group analyst Katie Lewis wrote in her blog that one reason that one reason that carriers including AT&T and Verizon are backing Windows Phone is that

"Mobile operators are sick of taking orders from Apple...iPhones are occupying
an increasingly dangerous share of mobile operators' smartphone sales. In
2011, iPhones represented half of AT&T's smartphone sales, and now that
Verizon has recently voiced a similar shift in sales, the companies' fears of
an Apple takeover are growing stronger."

How much carriers pay to Apple?

Apple's demands for subsidies in order for a carrier to sell an iPhone are legendary. U.S. carriers heavily subsidize all smartphone hardware, primarily to entice new customers to buy a two-year service contract that costs more than $1,700 over that period. The iPhone 4S with 16GB sells unlocked from Apple for $649 (useful on many GSM carriers with a separate contract), but Verizon, AT&T and Sprint sell it for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Beyond that, the Computerworld notes, Apple also gets a portion of the monthly revenue that carriers get from each customer who buys an iPhone, and it's a hefty cut, as much as $600. And that number is on top of the subsidies for the phone itself.

Wozniak on Windows Phone: Microsoft Reincarnated Steve Jobs
    April 28, 2012

    • It had the "most beautiful" visual experience of any platform, Wozniak said, and its presentation made him feel like he was "with a friend, not a tool." It was also fast and reliable, he added. ref

    • “I just really like the experience and will be carrying the Windows Phone everywhereref

    • “Intuitive and beautiful.” ref

    • "Just for looks and beauty, I definitely favor the Windows 7 phone over Android," Wozniak said.

"I'm kind of shocked on every screen — much more beautiful than the same apps on Android and iPhone. So I think that what Microsoft or Nokia did is that they went to some of the key app makers and got them to deliberately make specialized beautiful ones or they put their own themes on…" Wozniak added.

"I also surmised that Steve Jobs might have been reincarnated at MS due to a lot of what I see and feel with this phone making me think of a lot of great Apple things," Wozniak wrote. ref

    • "Just for looks and beauty, I definitely favor the Windows Phone over Android," Wozniak told host Dan Patterson in an interview with aNewDomain.net. "I'm shocked. Every screen is much more beautiful than the same apps on Android and iPhone."

Wozniak: Windows Phone More Beautiful Than iPhone
Posted on Monday Apr 30th 2012

"I'm shocked, every screen is much more beautiful than the same apps
    on Android and iPhone,"
he said. "The iPhone has a lot of beauty and
simplicity, and you don't get lost as much in it, but it is more awkward to
use (than Windows Phone 7.5 Mango). I'll be carrying the Windows Phone
    with me almost everywhere."

"iPhone is my favorite phone. I did give my opinion that the Windows
Phone had superior visual appearance and operation cues that were also
more attractive. In my opinion, it sets the mark for user interface.
    I would
recommend it over my Android phones, given that it doesn't yet have the
breadth of apps," he wrote. "I surmise that Microsoft hired someone from
Apple and put money into having a role in the UI and appearance of some
key apps. I also surmised that Steve Jobs might have been reincarnated
at MS due to a lot of what I see and feel with this phone, making me
think of a lot of great Apple things."

Windows 8 to replace Android in Barnes & Noble e-reader
    May 02, 2012

Barnes & Noble, which apart from being a bookseller is also an ebook reader brand, will replace the Android operating system in its Nook e-Reader with Microsoft's Windows 8. This decision was taken by Barners & Noble after it received free investment of $605-million from Microsoft.

Barnes & Noble has a strong presence in the e-reader market. The company's black-and-white Nook controlled 13.4 per cent of the global e-reader market, making it the second-most popular electronic reader behind Amazon's Kindle, according to data from IDC.

for the Lumia 900 in the United States happens to be very high
    , hence why WA will
