Symbian still on top, but Android is growing fast

In the latest figures we looked at, covering the first three weeks of February 2012,
we can see that Symbian is still the top mobile OS, with a 30.3% market share.
Apple’s iOS come in just behind Symbian at 25.35%, and Android follows at 24.72%.
BlackBerry OS has lost a lot of ground and lands at 6.8%, just ahead of Samsung at
5.06%. Samsung’s bada manages to gather up 0.52%, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone
has a 0.4% share of the mobile OS market. What used to be HP’s webOS barely
manages to score enough to get in the rankings with only 0.04%.

The beginning of the end for Android?
    3/14/2012 - forbes.com

Android has been able to capture a majority share of the smartphone market by targeting budget smartphone customers and by being available globally in a variety of options for a variety of customers. However, it has had a series of problems – fragmentation being one of the most serious ones.

If Apple and Microsoft both start extracting a patent licensing fee from Android device manufacturers, it could add up to $15 to $30 per device, which makes the “free” Android OS much more expensive than Windows Phone by Microsoft.

Windows Phone not only offers a uniform experience unencumbered by fragmentation, but it is also backed heavily by Microsoft and offers solid integration with the Windows OS and Xbox. With the impending launch of Windows 8 for tablets, it could become the platform of choice for device manufacturers wanting to offer a complete universe of devices unified by Windows – notebooks, tablets and smartphones – to customers.

This signals a massive opportunity for Microsoft and could be the beginning of the end for Android, which has yet to make a noticeable mark in the tablet market while its problems in the smartphone are mounting.

The Windows Phone Tango could help Microsoft attack the budget smartphone market while Windows Phone Apollo will help it capture market share in the premium smartphone segment. Windows 8 may even become one of the largest players in the tablet OS market, next only to iOS, while Android keeps struggling in the space.

Survey: Developer interest in Windows Phone remains steady, declines for Android
    March 20, 2012 at 6:00 AM

While mobile developers are most interested in developing for Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms, interest remains high in developing for Windows Phone, despite weak sales.

That's according to a new survey, being released today, conducted by research firm IDC and mobile development platform Appcelerator.

The survey of 2,173 Appcelerator developers around the world found the jump in interest in creating apps for Windows Phone that occurred in the fourth quarter last year is holding steady, despite Microsoft's share of smartphone subscribers actually declining. About 37 percent of developers said they are very interested in creating apps for Windows Phone -- enough to keep it in third place in the survey behind iOS and Android. (The percentage of developers very interested in Windows 8 tablets was also 37 percent.)

Nokia is building a revolutionary new phone to combat the ‘poorly designed’ iPhone
    By: Zach Epstein | Mar 20th, 2012

In an interview with Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti, Nokia design boss Marko Ahtisaari said that the company is currently working on a revolutionary new smartphone that will make other handsets seem dated.

According to the Nokia executive, Apple’s user interface on the iPhone is “poorly designed” and convoluted. “The road from the kitchen into the dining room is always through the front door,” Ahtisaari told Kauppalehti.

The executive wouldn’t provide any firm details regarding the device, but he didn’t hesitate to set sky-high expectations. The phone will feature breakthrough technology that revolutionizes the user experience according to Ahtisaari, and owners will not have to bend down or even touch the screen in order to operate it.

Microsoft says Windows Phone will beat the iPhone in China By 2016
    March 21st, 2012

“We will continue to drive the price down,” Leung said. “Our goal is number one. Having a goal to be number two is not really a goal.” While Apple’s 16GB iPhone 4S cost 4,988 yuan in China, Leung said that Microsoft’s manufacturing partners will “definitely” offer devices in the price range of 1,000 yuan, roughly $158, although he did not specify which partners or devices. By 2016, Windows Phone is projected to have a 20% Chinese market share, ahead of Apple’s 16% and trailing Google’s 60%, said Teck-Zhung Wong, a Beijing-based analyst at IDC.

After 16 Months, Windows Phone Has 70k Apps. How Long Did it Take iOS and Android?
    25 March 2012

Android. The Android Market hit the 80k app milestone in August, 2010, two years
after it launched. It took Windows Phone 8 months less to reach 70k. As for the
growth rate, the Windows Phone Marketplace has been adding 10k new apps every
month. So, bottom line? The Windows Phone Marketplace is growing WAY faster
than Android was in its first few years.

Apple. How about iOS? Well, the App Store is a little bit of a different story. As
mentioned, it launched in July 2008 and reached the 75k apps milestone in
September 2009. So it took the App Store 14 months to reach 75k apps compared
to the Windows Phone Marketplace’s 16 months to reach 70k. Except, there is one
small difference. When the App Store launched, it has close to zero competition.
There was no Android Market, and there was no Windows Phone Marketplace. That
was obviously not the case with the Windows Phone Marketplace’s launch in 2010.

Windows Phone, from the Perspective of an Apple Enthusiast

    Andy's feedback about Windows Phone.
    • It’s refreshing. It also forces me to realize just how little onscreen clutter a mobile OS requires. After I’ve used Windows Phone for several days, my iPhone screen suddenly seems . . . untidy.

    • Useful information and functions should surface themselves right into the first screen you see when you take the phone out of your pocket and wake it up. You shouldn’t need to drill down into apps. You either agree with this idea or you don’t. If you agree, then Windows Phone is instinctively the right answer.

    • Windows Phone’s approach trumps the iPhone’s unhelpful mosaic of app icons and it’s also a more orderly solution than Android’s desktop widgets. It’s the single feature I missed the most when I switched back to my iPhone.

    • The iPhone, and Android phones, just extend the standard PC metaphor into handheld devices. Wake the computer up, go to the Desktop, launch an app, spend some time inside that app’s exclusive space, and then either put the computer back to sleep or move to a different app.

    • Bottom line: Windows Phone’s strength isn’t in hundreds of thousands of the best apps available for any mobile platform anywhere. It’s more about having an important collection of apps that work together better than they can on any other OS.

    • Another thing I like about Windows Phone: it’s a people-oriented OS.

    • This is why I can recommend the Lumia and Windows Phone. The iPhone can’t possibly please every conceivable user.

iPhone Users who switched - they all love Windows Phone

    all other feedback

I bought the black LUMIA 900 today as a replacement for my iPhone 4. Initial impressions are I like the phone, but I will reserve providing detailed comments until I get a week or two of kicking the tires.
I also owned two iPhones, and a MAC Book Pro, so I feel I can remain objective in my review.

The AT&T store where I live sold out of their initial stock today, so it is a hot seller. Holding the Lumia gives you a nice solid feel for the price (awesome deal). What I will say is I love my free music downloads via Zune (which I use on XBOX) and the Nokia apps. The Nokia Maps GPS mapping is an absolutely awesome feature if your car doesn't already have a GPS device.

The Nokia GPS map software alone is enough to make the $99.00 price tag a steal. As for apps, there are plenty of them available and more on the way with strong sponsorship from Nokia and Microsoft.

As for colors, I think they have decent choices. I personally felt the blue was better suited for girls, but some may like it. Later this month a white Lumia will be released.

Pros: Love the Gorrilla Glass - no scratches
Love the polycarbonate shell, with color all the way through - you cannot scratch the phone and cause other colors to appear.

Con: None yet, but I am sure I will find some after I play with it for awhile.

Initial thoughts - I will buy the next model because it will only get better. Nokia has a new home on the U.S. with a solid offering.

Parting thoughts, Nokia stock seems like a good buy considering the current price.

    ■■■■■■■■■■
I pre-ordered one for my wife. It arrived last Friday. She had been using an iPhone for two years, and that's all she keeps talking about is how much better she likes it than her iPhone.

    ■■■■■■■■■■
I have purchased my Nokia Lumia 900 on Monday at one of AT&T store locations at a full retail price and I am very happy and proud about my decision. The store in SoCal where I was purchasing my device was running out of stock for cyan models by 5pm on Monday with only one more cyan device left after I purchased mine.

The AT&T lady who was selling me the device was very excited about my decision and wasn't overly surprised that I was actually willing to pay $450 for my Lumia 900.

Funny thing is, right as I was finishing up with my transaction, a gentlemen with his wife walks in the store, and while AT&T representatives were still on their way to greet him, a gentlemen loudly says "Where can I get this new Nokia smartphone?. The scene most definitely has put a big smile on my face, reaffirming my decision!

    ■■■■■■■■■■
I got mine up and running today...LTE is incredibly fast...and the nokia specific apps are well worth getting the phone alone.

    ■■■■■■■■■■
I got my Lumia 900 last Friday since I pre-ordered it and I am loving it. Its so hard to take my eyes off the phone. I was an iPhone4 user for over a year and to my surprise, I am not missing my iPhone4, isn't it supposed to be the best phone out in the market ? How can I not miss that ?

    ■■■■■■■■■■
The wife traded in her iPhone for a black Lumia 900. Since she got it on Friday (pre-order), she cannot stop telling me how much better this phone is than her iPhone. I switched over a year ago when I bought the Samsung Focus. This phone is EXACTLY what I want.

    ■■■■■■■■■■
I upgraded to a black one yesterday and I'm pleased. Moving from iOS (iPhone 4) to this was a bit weird since I've never used Windows Phone before but it only took me a few minutes to get used to it.
