Could Literotic Novels be considered art or part of literature?

of course. some are just done in bad taste.
read some anais nin, marquis de sade or vladimir nabokov. for poetry, ovid. pablo neruda for soft erotica.
lam mo tsong...funny naman nito kasi i happen to be a graduate of philosophy pero never kong na-encounter si de Sade.
nagulat lang ako na aside kay Michel Foucault, meron pa palang isang French na nagdiscuss about sex...si Foucault kasi eh more on associating sex sa sistema ng lipunan....eto kasi perverted sex talagav....binigyan mo ako ng mareresearch...hahahaha thanks dude
i bet writing an erotica is difficult. it takes knowledge and experience (or perhaps a very wild imagination) to be able to write a good one.
sex, perversion, and passion can be both carnal and spiritual experiences. and the writer has to be careful balancing these elements otherwise he or she may risk making the work sound unnatural, cheap, boring, and predictable.
look at nobel winner gabo marquez's memories of a my melancholy ****** and nabokov's lolita. they're quite boring. there was an obvious attempt to hit the target emotion, but IMHO they failed.
anne rice's sleeping beauty trilogy was crap, too.
but there's a soft and subtle eroticism in neruda's poems.
there's humor and passion in apollinaire's shorts.
there's that thrill and charm in pinoy pocketbooks that continue to hook pinay readers.
not everybody can be an erotic writer. it requires a different kind of craftsmanship.
not everybody can appreciate erotic lit. this genre requires a different breed of readers as well.
There's actually a website thats full of erotic lit from experienced authors and those with wild imagination! You might want to check www.pinoyliterotica.com
I began reading the first part of the book (Philosophy in the Bedroom), especially on giving message to readers. Well, I'm shocked because of his (Sade's) boldness....so free to just say what he wants.
Maybe, I'm having this impression that these guys who wrote erotic novels embrace the dark side of being a human. It is as though there is light from darkness (very philosophical indeed). Di ko pa naman nababasa ng buo, but I think what he wanted to state is that we are victims of our own justices. ..very ironic.
I agree that not everybody can appreciate this genre, most especially in the Philippines where most try to be "super banal." Anyway, I can't blame them because that defines our culture which is also the same reason why seldom bang the walls of the Academe for this art.

True, sex is a human experience and as long as the writer uses it well to convey his message, wala naman akong nakikitang mali. Hirap kaya magsulat n'yan; the language is different at dapat marunong kang tumimpla ng detalye.
In this thread too were references about tabloids and street erotica. Ito na naman yung debate about High Literature and Popular Literature. This debate's pretty sensitive so tread lightly.
Erotica is actually pretty old. Maybe older than regular ole fiction. There are Egyptian scrolls found inscribed with tons of erotica in some dig sites.
^ hindi ko alam kong mababadtrip ako or matatawa sa nomination na yan.
i can't defend the other nominees, but 1Q84 is not an erotica. so don't expect it to give one a hard-on.
the setting of the story is not even in this world. it's a place with two moons. where cats talk to one another and dead people come knocking on your door.
in my opinion, sex in a murakami story is more disturbing than erotic. it's not written to give one pleasure. it's an important act that the character has to go through to fill a vacuum, to validate things, to assert one's existence, etc. sex acts as a necessary ritual.
for example, in 1Q84
the scene where a naked fuka-eri climbs on top of tengo. despite his paralysis and objection, tengo gets the most fantabulous ejaculation of his life.
fuka-eri herself tells tengo it's a necessary act. but tengo himself isn't sure what it means to him. but the more you go back to that experience (through recollection or otherwise), the more you'll make sense of it and perhaps realize that it's much more than just a sexual act.
Nakita ko rin to sa fb so they cited the bad, the good should be listed too for comparison. Stephen King and Murakami just happened to sell well right now kaya napansin. I wonder what the badsex panel guys think about the likes of Lolita/ Love in the time of cholera/ Portnoy's complaint/ The Humbling whose eroticism is just as explicit and repetitive if not more, but are from better acclaimed authors. Eh basta, SK and HM fantard pa rin!
Personally, I'm not quite keen on Royo's work... It's too... busy? Parang ang dami mong kailangang i-take in para ma-appreciate. Rowley + Norman is nice... Same artsy feel without the clutter.
For a cartoony style, trip ko si Zalozabal.
And Manara somehow always gets to me.
(Hindi naman halatang suki ako sa Heavy Metal Magazine? )
