Occupy L.A. is meeting this Saturday morning at 10:00 and marching one mile to City Hall, which they plan to occupy indefinitely.

Message on their wall (occupytogether.org): "The website is going down temporarily. We are in the process of fixing our traffic issues and after taking a look at the traffic charts you guys are hammering it ..."

This is way freakin' viral. Over a thousand more "likes" since I saw it a half hour ago. We could gather enough people to occupy centers of power and capital in a huge freaking way. NATIONWIDE.

BREAKING NEWS FROM OCCUPY SAN DIEGO

BREAKING VICTORY: California Attorney General Kamala Harris just announced that she's opposing a proposed deal with Wall Street banks that would give them immunity for crimes that haven't been investigated yet.

She joins Attorneys General from New York, Kentucky, Delaware, Minnesota, and Nevada. Now we're taking the fight to other states!

STATEMENT: "Today's economic crisis was caused by Wall Street acting improperly. Every American has paid the price -- with families losing their homes, investors losing their money, and many Americans losing their jobs. There should be absolutely no criminal or civil immunity given to banks for activity that has not yet been investigated."

The October2011 Movement is planning an occupation and nonviolent resistance actions in Washington, DC starting on October 6, 2011. This date marks the 10-year anniversary of the U.S. war in Afghanistan and the first week of the new federal budget which provides unlimited funding for war, tax breaks for the wealthy and austerity for human services.

Thousands of people have pledged to gather in Freedom Plaza beginning on that day to nonviolently disrupt the disloyal, incompetent, and corrupt special interests which have usurped our nation’s civil and military power, spawning a host of threats to our liberty, lives and national security.

The October2011 Movement protests corporatism and militarism because they prevent solutions to our current crises which would create a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world from being implemented. Instead concentrated corporate interests rule our elections and political process so that wealth continues to be funneled to the top 1%.

US Day of Rage is calling for free and fair elections, not elections manipulated by the economic elite, special interests, or corporate media, where choices are limited to bought candidates and two corrupt parties. US Day of Rage is organizing with OccupyWallStreet to create a tent city in the financial district of New York beginning on September 17. October2011 and OccupyWallStreet have endorsed each others’ actions.

Legitimate government is born of the people expressed by its citizens in free and fair elections. It does not spring from a tyranny of special interests, crony capitalism, or a system or ideology that runs counter to the aims of life.

Free and fair elections inspire good citizenship and public service, because they engage the intelligence and genuine good will of the American people. They produce the kind of stewardship our nation desperately needs, because they ensure that citizens can influence their destiny, and make genuine contributions to society unlike our present system where the government moves in directions the majority of Americans oppose putting the profits of campaign donors ahead of the wishes of the American people.

Free and fair elections are steps towards remediating the myriad ills and abuses of a corrupt and illegitimate government, which preys on the resources and spirits of citizens, and violates rights of the other peoples and nations.

The October2011 Movement and US Day of Rage know that abuses of the people and planet will end when we take unified and persistent action. We stand in solidarity with each other and with the growing nonviolent movements around the nation and world to call for democratization of our society.

Atlantans Launch Chapter of Occupy Together
    Written By: MATTHEW CARDINALE10-1-2011(APN) ATLANTA

For fifteen days, activists have been protesting on Wall Street in New York against corporate greed, in a protest with no end date called Occupy Wall Street.

The protests have been the Left’s attempt to respond to the right-wing Tea Party with its own populist movement; so, of course, they have been subject to a corporate media blackout and extensive police oppression and brutality.

Over eighty activists have been arrested so far in New York, Kevin Zeese who has been participating in the Occupy Wall Street movement, told Atlanta Progressive News.

On October 06, 2011, a second major Occupy protest will begin in Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC, which has been in the planning process for six months.

About a week ago, the Occupy movement began a national ad hoc umbrella group called Occupy Together, which unites local movements in cities across the US.

Here in Atlanta, activists have launched their own chapter called Occupy Atlanta.

They have an Occupy Atlanta page on Facebook with 1,497 likes as of this date; a website; and have been posting flyers throughout the City.

Occupy Atlanta will be having a General Assembly tomorrow, Sunday, October 02, 2011, at 5pm in Hurt Park in downtown Atlanta.

Previously, they held at least two General Assemblies, including one that took place on September 28 at Brownwood Park; and one on September 26 at Springvale Park playground.

According to a link on the Occupy Atlanta website, a People’s Assembly is defined as “a participatory decision-making body which works towards consensus.”

The group has also been posting the minutes of its General Assemblies online. According to the September 28 minutes, one member made a motion to occupy Woodruff Park on October 06, but the motion was declined.

The Assemblies have been fairly well-attended, with 47 people at the September 28 one.

Generally, Occupy Atlanta appears to be in its initial planning stages, determining general values and goals, creating committees, and addressing logistical issues.

“Any of these groups getting started, it does take time to get organizing,” Zeese, who is also a core organizer of the October 06 rally in DC, said.

The October 06 rally in DC had already been in the planning process for three months when Adbusters, an anti-consumerist magazine, called for a rally on Wall Street as well.

The focus of the Occupy movements has been “economic disparity and the economy,” Zeese said.

“The focus on Wall Street in New York is on bailing out Wall Street, the CEO bonuses, the corporations that are hoarding the wealth. A lot of these young kids are coming out with very high college debt loans, five hundred to a thousand dollar a month loan repayment. It’s really a lack of fairness in the economy, the hoarding of wealth by big business interests, and a failure to keep the economy going so people will have jobs,” Zeese said.

Zeese said the growth of the movement “shows the anger people have of the unfairness of the economy. They see the wealthiest, richest four hundred people have as much wealth as bottom 154 million Americans - people see it and they’re angry about it,” Zeese said.

Zeese also rejected comparing the Occupy and Tea Party movements.

“I think the Tea Party movement is some of the same anger. I think it’s a separate issue. Unlike the Tea Party which has become entangled of the Republican Party, the Occupy Movement is independent,” Zeese said.

“It’s people who are suffering - it’s not Left either. I don’t think the politics are that clear that way. We call ourselves the ninety-nine percent.”

Occupy Wall Street currently has hundreds of protesters each day during the weekend, and thousands during the week. Zeese predicts attendance will reach the tens of thousands in the near future.

    Activists continue to 'Occupy Chicago'
    SOURCE: PRESS TV

A group of American activists have gathered in front of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank in the “Occupy Chicago” rally to protest against poverty and unemployment in the United States.

According to organizers, the activists were inspired by the Occupy Wall Street demonstration in New York, the Chicago Tribune reported on Friday.

The Chicago sit-in began on September 23 with a march from Willis Tower to the Federal Reserve Bank.

One protester, Emilio Baez, said the demonstration is a "direct call to working people worldwide."

"This is our Tahrir Square," he said, referring to the protests in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo that led to the February revolution. "We'll stay here for months if we have to."

On Thursday, around 30 people stood on both sides of LaSalle Street, holding cardboard signs that read "Abolish the Fed Reserve."

In Los Angeles, people are scheduled to come to the streets in the “Occupy Los Angeles” rally on Saturday to show solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protests.

On Friday, about 2,000 anti-corporate demonstrators marched from a protest camp near Wall Street to the headquarters of the New York Police Department. Activists remained camped out near a small park in lower Manhattan on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The members of the Occupy Wall Street movement, who are protesting issues including the 2008 bank bailouts, foreclosures and high unemployment, have vowed to stay out through winter.

New York police have arrested around 100 people so far.

Many protesters became angry after a police commander used pepper spray on four women at last weekend's march and a video of the incident went viral on the Internet.

Protesters plan to occupy London Stock Exchange

A group of protesters are organising an occupation of the London Stock Exchange to bring attention to what they see as unethical behaviour on the part of banks, following a similar demonstration on Wall Street.

In a Facebook group called Occupy the London Stock Exchange organisers call on crowds to march on the exchange’s headquarters at Paternoster Square and fortify it with tents and barricades “for a few months”.

Beginning on October 15, we want to see at least over 20,000 people flood in, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy the London Stock Exchange for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices,” reads the description of the protest on Facebook.

According to the group the protest will begin on Saturday October 15 and run until 11am on December 12.

The event currently has 225 confirmed attendees, with a further 121 tentative yes’s, despite the site failing to list any aims or objectives for the event, or exactly what is being protested.

The event takes its cue from a similar protest on Wall Street in New York, first proposed by Adbusters magazine, which began on September 17 with around 1,000 protesters. That protest is still going on, with more than 80 arrests taking place on September 24 alone.

One of the organisers of the protest, James Alexander Fancourt, said the protests were focused against “increasing social and economic injustice in this country”.

“Since the financial crisis the Government has made sure to maintain the status quo and let the people who caused this crisis get off scot-free, whilst conversely ensuring that the people of this country pay the price, in particular those most vulnerable,” he said.

“What we have in common is that we are the other 99pc, that we want People over Profit, that we are making our voices heard against greed and corruption and for a democratic and just society. And we are doing that in a non-violent and peaceful way.”

Because Paternoster Square is private property the group are considering other nearby areas where they can stage a long-term presence, but denied that they were trying to stop the exchange from operating “as this would cause more harm than good”.

“Rather than make the situation worse we wish to highlight the injustices and bring important issues to light.”

That will be difficult. That's why I didn't include it. It will be easier to occupy the two camps.

But yes, that would be the last to occupy.

Noam Chomsky: Anyone with eyes open knows that the gangsterism of Wall Street — financial institutions generally — has caused severe damage to the people of the United States (and the world). And should also know that it has been doing so increasingly for over 30 years, as their power in the economy has radically increased, and with it their political power. That has set in motion a vicious cycle that has concentrated immense wealth, and with it political power, in a tiny sector of the population, a fraction of 1%, while the rest increasingly become what is sometimes called “a precariat” — seeking to survive in a precarious existence. They also carry out these ugly activities with almost complete impunity — not only too big to fail, but also “too big to jail.”

The courageous and honorable protests underway in Wall Street should serve to bring this calamity to public attention, and to lead to dedicated efforts to overcome it and set the society on a more healthy course.
