Hong Kong - THE BEST DESTINATION FOR FIRST TIME TRAVELLERS!

Basic Information:

British Colony Until 1997 Handover to China
Currency: Hong Kong Dollar (Approx. 1HKD = 6PHP)
Electricity is same as Philippines, 220V but sockets are different
Summers are Wet, Hot and Humid (April to October) | Winters are Cold and Dry (December to February)
Territory is relatively small but very dense, packed and fast-paced lifestyle
Right-hand drive, look at left and right sides when crossing the street
Visa is NOT required for Filipino citizens (maximum stay of 14 days)
Do not be worried about HK immigrations, nothing to fear when you don't have plans of being a TNT
Primary Language: Cantonese | Secondary: English and Mandarin
Standard of Living is much higher than the Philippines so expect everything to be more expensive starting with bottled water
1 Hour ferry ride to Macau (Visa NOT Required for Macau, Passport needed)
Shenzhen is accessible from HK by Train (KCR). Chinese Visa REQUIRED.
Common sense for safety is required, watch out for pickpockets and "salisi" gangs.
Hong Kong is a very tourist friendly city, signs are all bilingual and are everywhere. You can hardly get lost.
Hong Kong is much much more than Ocean Park and Disneyland.
Hong Kong consists of 3 major parts: Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong Island and New Territories.
Hong Kong is synonymous to walking, prepare for long walks so bring comfortable shoes
Travelling around HK: The subway (MTR) will take you to most places, if not, the bus will. If there are 4 of you, the taxi sometimes becomes a cheaper and more convenient alternative to the subway.
Do not be afraid to explore HK, in the case you get lost, just head to the nearest MTR exit or take a taxi and give your address.
A 5 minute walk for Hongkongers means 10 minutes walk for Filipinos (since most of them are briskwalkers).
Hong Kong may seem small but it takes time to fully appreciate it.
Hong Kong is generally safe even for solo/female travellers but common-sense and vigilance is still required.
Left-Side of the Escalator is for people who are in a hurry, do not block their path by staying on this side.

Myths about Hong Kong that are NOT TRUE:

They hate Filipinos because of the Quirino bus massacre.
They are racists against Filipino Tourists.
You need to join a package tour to save money.

Senior Citizens Discount. Senior Citizen is 65 years old and above in HK. Bring a proof of age like passport or driver's license. If they will honor it, good. If not, then you have no choice. You can't leave your seniors somewhere while you all enjoy the place. Disneyland honors foreign seniors. Ocean Park does not. There's also a Senior version of the Octopus Card which should be cheaper.

-we rented one wheelchair in disney ($60 hk for a day) for my mother and the privileges more than pay for the rent ... We are given importance. Example, we dont have to queue to enter a show or have a ride since a disney personnel will assist you while passing a different route (for those disabled)

Sky 100 VS The Peak. Sky 100 is in Kowloon Island, The Peak is in HK Island; so the view will be different. The Peak Sky Terrace is open air while Sky 100 is inside the building behind a glass. If you have time, visit both. If not, visiting either will do. Both offers a good view of Hong Kong. Whether the entrance fee is worth it or not, you can be the judge of that. Everything important/pertinent you need to know is on this page. Everything you need to know to accomplish a successful DIY trip is also on this page. We won't put anything here that would cause any sort of inconvenience on your part. We won't put anything that is not “OK”. On your part, you are free to divert from the things written here unless they are clearly specified like doing Macau and Ocean Park in 1 day. The same way, if it's not here then most probably it's because it won't have a big effect on your trip. Either that or the information is already here, you just have to know how to utilize it properly or combining them to get what you are looking for. Leave the minute details to fate. Every trip abroad is an adventure, don't plan everything to the dot because there will always be unforeseen circumstances no matter how well you plan it.

With places that present multiple options like the Peak Tram and NP360, it is totally up to you whether or not to avail roundtrip rides. The same with reaching the Peak terminus, it depends if you want to walk there or if you want to take bus 15C. We give you the options, you make the decision. In the event you only decide to ride them 1 way, we have also included the instructions on how to get back without riding them. You are free to choose, don’t ask us what is OK because everything has a positive and negative side.

If you are looking for reviews of a particular hostel or airline, there is a “search this thread” function. You can type “Tiger Airways” and see whatever post has the keyword in it. If the information isn't here, it's somewhere on the Web. Disneyland and Ocean Park both provide sufficient information on what you can find when you get there. Including what you can find during special seasons like Halloween, Christmas or Chinese New Year. Then there's Google for everything else. This thread is the most spoon-fed guide to Hong Kong you will find online. Do your part; exert that tiny effort for anything you can't find here.

For those asking whether or not their itinerary is “OK”, you don’t have to ask anymore if you simply copied the sample itineraries on Page 1 or if you only revised/edited some parts of those sample itineraries. I see a lot of itineraries patterned after those in Page 1, no need to ask if they are OK.

For those asking whether or not their pocket money is sufficient already, consult with the guide below on how to estimate the pocket money. Don’t forget to specify where you plan to go and for how many people the pocket money is.

OK lang ba mag DIY kahit first time namin? Read this thread, read the old threads. Tons of people successfuly went to HK with only Page 1 as guide. They didn't even have to post questions anymore.

Tripadvisor.com provides comprehensive reviews and photos of hotels in HK.

When is travel to HK "OK"? Depends what you are after. Sale? Weather? Celebrations? What? If you want to enjoy the cold weather, go to HK from November to March. If you want to go on a shopping spree, go to HK from July to August.

Is it OK to shop in Causeway Bay? It won’t be a shopping district if it’s not “OK” for shopping.

Is it OK to travel during holidays? You already know the answer to this. Holidays means crowded tourist spots no matter if it's in HK, USA or in the Philippines. If you are fine with places being crowded then go ahead with your trip. Don't ask something you already know the answer to.

Lastly, don't simply ask if something is "OK". Be more concrete. OK in terms of what?
CHEAPEST.

Cheapest airline. Cheapest flight. Cheapest hostel. Cheapest hotel. Cheapest entrance ticket. Cheapest ferry ticket to Macau. Cheapest package tour. Cheapest place to eat. The 2nd most common word after OK.

Cheapest airline and flight - Cebu Pacific's Piso/Zero Fare Promo. Airlines regularly have promos so always be on the look out for them. Generally the earlier you buy, the cheaper it is. As a point of reference, regular airfare for CebPac is around P7-9k while it is around P8-12k for PAL. Yes you can fly to Macau then fly back from HK; and vice versa.

Cheapest hostels can be found inside Chungking Mansions. IF you can stand the shady environment and chance upon a decent hostel inside it then stay here. Otherwise there are slightly more expensive but more decent hostels around the area.

Cheapest hotel are usually those that are far from downtown HK. Good value hotels are listed below.

Cheapest entrance ticket - See post below.

Cheapest ferry ticket to Macau – Ferries to Macau have basically the same price but you can find travel agencies inside ferry terminals that sell discounted tickets. Yes they are legitimate. Detailed info on Macau below.

Cheapest package tour - You will see this in online advertisements and newspapers. USUALLY they will come with a compulsory city tour which is a waste of time. Before asking if the tour is "worth it", make sure you know the airline, the flights, the hotels included and the tours you are required to join. Generally we do not suggest joining a tour because HK is easy to go around on your own.

Cheapest place to eat - local eateries or local fastfood. If you can brave the typical restaurant in HK then you will save some money. You are in a different country, don't settle with McDonalds, KFC and Yoshinoya.

Cheapest, Most Convenient and Fastest (or “Best”) do not go along in 1 sentence. If you are after speed and convenience, prepare to pay more than the usual. If you want it cheap, prepare for some drawbacks. Be reasonable. Save enough to make your trip worthwhile. You won't enjoy a trip to HK if you want to cut down costs on everything. Food is not terribly expensive and it is part of the culture so bringing in food from Manila defeats the purpose of going abroad. If you don't have enough, save some more. Make it short but worthwhile.
TRAVELING WITH MINORS AND OTHER AIRPORT/IMMIGRATION CONCERNS

If the minor is traveling without the parents, a DSWD permit is required to travel. If 1 of the parents is going, there is no need for this. Minors (2-12) can also avail of the discounted travel tax of P810 instead of P1620. 2yrs and below is free. Remind the airport staff of the age discount. All travelers should pay the the terminal fee of P750. Do not make an itinerary that is so full and packed. Kids will easily get tired. More specially during summer where the weather is hot and humid.

When booking airline tickets online, you most probably have to pay the travel tax at the airport. And then you also have to pay the terminal fee as stated above. You also need to bring the credit card used to purchase the tickets or a Xerox of it. Confirm with airline regarding the requirements. If you booked through a travel agency, you need to confirm with them whether or not the price you paid includes the travel tax already.

You will NOT need to pay anything at the HK airport.

Make sure your passport still has 6 months before it expires to avoid any hassles.

Handcarry liquid should not exceed 100ml per canister/container. Umbrellas need to be checked-in.

For those afraid of being questioned by the Immigration Officer in Manila or HK for whatever reason, prepare the necessary documents and arguments ahead of time. Do not look guilty if you have nothing to hide or it might only give you more trouble.

Show Money – As long as it’s enough to feed you, pay the entrance fees and transportation fees, then it’s enough. They only ask this if they suspect that you’re going to be a TNT or illegal worker. If you have an itinerary prepared and a decent amount of pocket money, you won’t have any problem. Estimating pocket money can be found below.

It is also recommended to have your passport with you while in HK just in case a Police Officer questions you. Make sure you have a photocopy of it in the hotel/hostel. There are many cases of overstaying in HK so the Police conducts random questioning.

More Tips for traveling with Kids/Toddlers:

another nice-to-know for travelling with infants/babies.... most of the bigger tourist areas have changing rooms, there is a Baby area in Disneyland perfect for just resting, diaper changing and breastfeeding

regarding whether to bring strollers or not... that will depend on
1) where they want to go and how (If they're going to be riding more buses than MTR, the stroller might prove to be a hassle kasi you have to keep on folding it and stowing it out of the way in the bus.... sa MTR, you have to carry it down and up stairs but there are elevators within the MTR station and spaces inside MTR cars for strollers and wheelchairs)
2) who will carry the stroller up and down stairs, buses, etc
3) how old their child is (newborns and infants are better held/worn, toddlers up to 3 years would really need strollers)
4) where they're going (Ocean park, kahit 6 year old will benefit from a stroller... but you can rent there naman... sa Disneyland, the attractions are closer together so the child will seldom spend time in the stroller, except maybe to nap)

Ocean Park Strollers - HKD40 for the whole day (plus HKD60 deposit)

Disneyland Strollers - HKD60 with a HKD100 deposit
DISCOUNTED TICKETS.

Some hostels sell discounted admission tickets to Disneyland and/or Ocean Park but rarely do they sell tickets to Ngong Ping and The Peak. Include this in your inquiry with them and the rates of the said tickets. If not, you have 3 options.

Option 1: Travel Easy or Sally's in Worldwide House, Central exit B.
Option 2: CTS in the airport (arrivals area) or any of their branch in downtown HK.

Recent reports say they do not accept credit cards anymore. CTS in the airport closes at 10PM.

CTS doesn't offer outright discounts for Disneyland but they do have a combo ticket that comes with a meal voucher. Meals cost above 50HKD so you will save money if you avail of the combos. They also have combos for 2 meals + drink/snack. For the 3in1 combo you can save as much as 100HKD. CTS in the airport does not operate 24/7, they close at 10PM. If you have any plans of buying Peak and Ngong Ping tickets in advanced, buy it in CTS. We suggest this if you want to avoid the long lines. There are no discounted tickets for Ngong Ping 360 and The Peak. A feedback on the combo ticket of CTS for Disneyland here:

Avail the 3 in 1 Disneyland package at China Travel Services. Sulit sya at $419. That includes 1 Popcorn (masarap 'to) or Drinks, 1 LUNCH, 1 Dinner - any meal WITHOUT drinks at Starliner Diner, Comet Cafe (pero closed nung nagpunta kami) or Clopin's Festival of Food. Yung isang meal kasi dun would cost $50-$70, so sulit na talaga yung package.

Ganito yan, meron 3 coupons. Yung isa Lunch Coupon (valid until 4:30pm), Dinner Coupon valid from 5:30pm onwards.Then the other one, Popcorn or Drink. Mahal din kasi yung drinks sa loob mga $25 yata each so yung isang coupon niredeem namin ng popcorn, yung coupon ng hubby ko, large coke sa Starliner Diner. Redeemable lang itong mga to sa Starliner Diner, Clopin's Festival of Food or Comet Cafe. Pero yung mga food stalls sa Comet CAfe closed lahat that time. Any meal yan from their menu pwede. Kaya minsan yung pinakamahal ang pinipili namin para sulit.

If I were you guys, I would buy tickets for The Peak and Ngong Ping 360 in CTS. And then for Disneyland and/or Ocean Park, either you buy the discounted ticket from your hostel or in Travel Easy OR you buy the combo package that CTS offers. It’s basically the same thing because you can’t not eat inside Disneyland since heavy meals and sometimes even snacks can be confiscated by Disneyland staff. For Ocean Park, they are not strict so you can bring heavy meals inside.

For Option 3, please inquire with them on how/where to pick up the tickets.

Some people are coming from Macau, some people arrive at the airport but CTS is already closed, some people are staying in a hotel, some people are staying far from Central. Different situations, different scenarios. In the end, it doesn't matter which has the cheapest rates. What's important is convenience. Eg: If you will go out of your way to Central just for the tickets, you are spending for the transportation and the time/effort you put out as opposed to just buying in the airport or in the hostel you are staying at. Bottomline: As long as you will have some savings without having to exert the extra effort, then you should be satisfied already. Nakatipid ka nga ng konti sa ticket, gumastos ka naman sa MTR, edi parehas lang. Please don't be so nitpicky when it comes to this. Halos pare-parehas lang ang matitipid niyo after all is said and done.

Ask if what you are buying is the actual ticket or a voucher. Also ask where to line-up when you get to the tourist spot. It doesn’t matter whether it’s an actual ticket or a voucher, either way you won’t have to line-up for a long time. Disneyland also sells the 3in1 food voucher for 125HKD.

PS: Disneyland and Ocean Park tickets are "ride all you can" tickets.
PS: Judging from Asiatravel’s discounted tickets, there MIGHT be another impending increase for Disneyland next year (2012).
Octopus Card vs Airport Express Travel Pass.

The consensus for this is that the travel pass is not worth it. You won't be able to maximize the ride-all-you-can. So just stick with the Octopus Card. For those staying for 3-4 days, 150HKD is enough (including 50HKD deposit). If you are taking the AE to the city, purchase it separately (preferably as a group so you will have discounts). The AE has free shuttles to selected hotels. Details below on the Octopus Card.
Never ending question about Citygate outlets.

Some say it sells old stock, some say it has current collections. Some say it's not worth it, some say they found good bargains. If you have time for it, if you are in the vicinity, then go ahead check it out. If not, there are a couple of outlet stores in TST. When there is a sale going on, there might not be a need to go to an outlet store altogether. Just shop wherever you want to. Bottomline: If you have very limited time in HK, just shop in the city.
Never ending question on Money Exchange.

Based from reports, the best place to exchange currency is in HK; Wing Hoi in particular. So what you can do no matter if you have PHP or USD is to exchange a small amount in Manila or at the HK airport and then exchange all your other cash in Wing Hoi. However if you are after convenience and peace of mind you can also exchange your cash in Manila either through banks or money changers depending who offers a better rate. If you are converting around P20,000 or less, the difference is basically negligible already AKA you won’t save a lot by spending a lot of time trying to figure out what to do. DO NOT double convert PHP->USD->HKD because chances are you will have losses if you do this.

The exchange rate of Wing Hoi does not vary greatly. No need to keep asking the updated rate cause it's only a few cents if it does change. Wing Hoi also has good rates if you are bringing PHP. So exchange a small amount in the airport then exchange the rest at Wing Hoi. Average Wing Hoi rate is 1USD--7.7HKD. (Aug/2011 report: PHP100--18HKD). More details on Wing Hoi and FOREX below.

According to Philippine laws you cannot bring more than USD10,000 or its equivalent in another currency. You also cannot bring out more than PHP10,000.
HOSTELS. Never ending question of whether a specific hostel is "OK" or not.

For the nth time, if it's listed below then it's OK. If it’s listed below then it means it’s clean, has a good location and very decent overall. The only reason these hostels made the list below is because a Pexer has previously stayed in it and gave a good feedback. Only Taisan has negative reviews. How to contact them? Go to their website. E-mail them or call them. There's a reason why I post the link to their websites. Taisan and Golden Crown aren't the only hostels in HK. Apart from the list below, you can check Hostelworld.com and Hostelbookers.com. Hostels are practically all the same. Same size, same services, same old building, same accessibility. If the hostel you are asking is not listed below, search it in Google to see if there are any reviews of it online.

Never ending question on sneak-ins. Hostel and small hotels (like Butterfly on Prat and Hotel Benito) - NO SNEAK-INS. For big hotels yes you can do it. If a hostel room is for 2 people, 3 people cannot pay the price of 2. Read details below. How to know if a hotel has a big lobby? Go to their website or to Tripadvisor.com for photos.

Do hostels provide toiletries? Discounted tickets? WiFi? Drinking water? Rice? E-mail them, inquire. We do not represent these hostels and their freebies do vary.
Unless you plan to exhaust yourself, don't go to Disneyland, Ocean Park and Macau in a 4D3N trip. It is impossible to do all 3 if you only have 3D2N. You will end up rushing, tired and failing to enjoy the experience. Hong Kong is just 2 hours away, don't cram everything in a single trip because the world won't end in 2012. Forget about shopping if you will do an "amazing race" type of trip. If you want to enjoy Macau, allot at least 1 whole day for it. Disneyland, Macau and Ocean Park all need 1 whole day each to fully enjoy them.

Tourist spots like Disneyland, Macau, Ocean Park, Ngong Ping and The Peak are crowded during weekends. Given na iyan. Even more crowded during holidays in China like May 1, October 1-3, Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, etc.

Food is the last thing you should worry about. HK people love to eat; they have very high standards when it comes to food so it is very rare to find a restaurant that has bad quality. No matter if it's Chinese, Asian, Desserts or Western food, it will most probably be better than the average restaurant we have to offer. Don't settle for western fastfood when there are tons of delicious food in HK.

Do not worry where you will eat in HK because there’s literally a restaurant every block. You will never run out of choices and places to eat. Bring disposable spoon and fork just in case the restaurant only has chopsticks. Unless you have a LOT of free time do not try to make life difficult by trying to plan/plot where you will eat for a particular meal. Trips abroad usually means the usual time for eating won't be followed. Tendencies are you will just eat when you get hungry. Like I said, restaurants are everywhere in HK. You will NOT go hungry no matter where you are.

If it’s not a classy sit-down restaurant, prepare to pay around 20-30HKD for a rice meal (Chicken, rice, veggies) or a bowl of beef noodles. For Disneyland, it’s definitely above 50HKD per head per meal. An average of 50HKD per meal should be sufficient.

Number 1 rule for those planning to shop, canvass target items in Manila first so you will have a price reference. Nobody will be able to give you a guarantee whether or not something is cheaper in HK so canvass first! At least when you get to HK you will know immediately if it’s cheaper or not.

Souvenirs - The typical "gas-gas" souvenirs can be found in Ladies Market and Cameron Road in TST. I Love HK shirts are 5pcs for 100HKD. Magnets cost 10HKD. Remember to bargain hard. The Peak also sells souvenirs; much expensive but better quality.

Rubber Shoes - Fa Yuen Street in Mongkok has plenty of rubber shoes shops that sell authentic items. They have the best price and selection. Old stocks are put on sale.

Ladies Market – Knock-offs you can find in Manila. And the usual souvenirs. Not a place to shop for clothes other than those “I love HK” t-shirts. Temple Street Night Market – Knick-knacks and other novelty items. Also not a place to shop for clothes. Not too many souvenirs either.

Best place to shop for clothes, Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay. Hong Kong has brands that are not available in Manila yet like Uniqlo, H&M, American Eagle, E-Base, etc.

MACAU.

There are 3 points in HK where you can take the ferry to Macau. Sheung Wan, Tsim Sha Tsui and the Airport. If you are staying in Kowloon then obviously the nearest ferry terminal is in Tsim Sha Tsui. Please read details below under Macau section.

TRANSPORT FROM AIRPORT AND WITHIN HONG KONG

Getting to your hostel or hotel from the airport is extremely easy. You have the choice of taxi, bus (Cityflyer), or train (Airport Express). The airport bus is cheap, convenient and easy to use. Details on how to use it is written below. You can also ask the hotel/hostel to provide you with instructions on how to get to their place; and how to leave their place.

The Hong Kong subway system is very extensive and easy to use. It will take you to almost anywhere you want to go. I don’t know why people keep asking how to use the bus. Use the MTR, it’s the best and easiest way to get around HK unless specified otherwise.

If you are 4 or 5 sometimes it is cheaper to travel by taxi specially for shorter distances since you will divide the cost by all of you. Just don’t travel by taxi during rush hour or you will be stuck in traffic.

The "Getting To" section below is as good and as clear as it gets. It won't get any more straightforward than how it's already written so find the time to understand it. Getting around is EXTREMELY easy. You just need the instructions and a free map from the airport. You can also print your own maps if you want.

Is it walking distance from X to X? How near is X to X? Google Maps (To/From Direction) maps out the shortest route by walking/car/bus including the distance and approximate walking time. Or you can use Google Maps Street View to estimate the distance.

The MTR location maps (http://www.mtr.com.hk/eng/facilities/lm.html) are very detailed and useful; a good alternative to Google Maps. USE THEM!

Getting from Point A to Point B. Read the instructions in the special section below, use Google Maps or this http://hketransport.gov.hk/routesearch.aspx

There are no instructions for "Ocean Park to The Peak" or "Ocean Park to the Star Ferry Terminal" because there are already instructions on how to get from Ocean Park back to Admiralty. How do you get to Central from Admiralty? MTR. Easy as that. There are maps of MTR stops / districts below. It's not hard to figure out how to get from an MTR exit in Central to somewhere adjacent like the Star Ferry Terminal or the Peak Terminus. Again there's also Google Maps. Almost everything can be reached by riding the MTR so all you need is to figure out the route and how to get to the nearest MTR station.
What can you see here? What is so special with this place? GOOGLE IT.
If you are a first time traveler abroad, better to have a hotel/hostel reservation just in case the immigration officer asks for it. If you are staying with a friend, make sure you know the exact address and the occupation of the friend.
WALK-IN ACCOMMODATION. For those who are planning to walk-in their hostel accommodation, there are a lot of hostels to choose from in Tsim Sha Tsui. If you can stand the environment in and around Chungking Mansion then by all means, book a room there. Otherwise there's Mirador Mansion, Golden Crown Court, Burlington Arcade and a bunch of other buildings in the area that have a much better ambiance. Walk-in rates for hotels are much more expensive than booking online. DO NOT walk-in to a hotel if you don’t want to waste money.
Ocean Park Cable Car, Ngong Ping 360 and The Peak Tram have regular maintenance scheduled. Check their website to see if they are operational during the duration of your trip.
ALLOWANCE. Make sure you allot an allowance for the travel time, the waiting time, the pocket money, etc. Don't make an itinerary or a budget plan that is so rigid. There should always be an allowance.
To enjoy the century-old "Ding Ding" tram on HK island, don't use it as a means of transportation because it will be challenging for 1st time visitors. Ride it as an attraction from 1 point to another. Just enjoy the sights, don't worry where you will get off. Worst case there's always an MTR station nearby. It runs parallel to the island line of the MTR. The views on top from end-to-end is very nice specially at night. Visit the sites below for more info:

Same with the Star Ferry. Use it as an alternative to the MTR; as another sight-seeing attraction.
ROAMING AND SIM CARDS. Cellphone roaming is very expensive no matter which service provider you have. If you want to communicate within HK and to Philippines, better buy a local SIM card in HK. On the average they only cost around 50HKD. You can buy a prepaid SIM in 7-Eleven or inside Mirador Mansion near Wing Hoi. Chungking also sells them. Detailed section including charges can be found below.
Before believing rumors or hearsays about Hong Kong make sure that person has been to HK and knows what he/she is talking about. Don't be paranoid just because some know-it-all claims something.
Where to stay in HK? It doesn't matter! The most popular districts are Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay but because HK has a very good transportation system, all you have to do is stay in a hotel/hostel that is walking-distance to an MTR station and preferably along the path of the airport bus (Cityflyer). All areas have their fair share of restaurants, malls and commercial establishments. As long as you don't stay in the far regions (Tak Kok Tsui, Shatin, Hung Hom, Tsuen Wan, Western District, Tsing Yi) then you are OK.
LOCKERS.

Luggage Tip: Bring a bigger luggage bag (esply if they plan to shop) kasi like in HKIA, they charge per bag per hour when we had to leave our luggage for a while before going to Citygate... it's also easier to leave just one huge bag with your hotel (easier to keep an eye on, since our hotel just left it in the lobby pero with ropes/locks naman)

Airport buses have an LCD screen so you will know what stop it is and what the next stop is. There are also "stop" buttons you can press if you will alight at the next stop. Just to make sure the bus will stop.
SHENZHEN - There are reports that you can join group tours from HK to go to Shenzhen. Honestly there's nothing special to see in Shenzhen when Macau is nearer without the need for a visa. If you are not going to join a group tour you need to process your China Visa in the Philippines.

For those who don't want to do things on their own, you can always book the airline ticket and hotel through travel agents. Big travel agencies usually have "blockings" and counterparts in HK so it is very possible to get lower rates with them for both airfare and hotel accommodations.

WHY YOU DO NOT NEED TO JOIN A STRINGS-ATTACHED PACKAGE TOUR FOR HONG KONG

- Hong Kong isn't USA or Europe where you need a tour guide and a bus to take you around because of the sheer size, language barrier and culture/history. The reason why people go to HK is pretty cut out: sightseeing, food and shopping. You don't need a tour guide explaining things you don't even want to know. Hong Kong's transportation is one of the best, most extensive and easiest to use in the world. All you need to do is a little preparation and the ability to read English.
- Compulsory city tours WASTE YOUR TIME on useless places like jewelry factories
- You will most likely be left with half a day to enjoy Disneyland or Ocean Park
- You will be pressured to buy overpriced souvenirs and jewelry

The earlier you plan your trip, the earlier you book your airline ticket and accommodations, the better.

Last minute (2 weeks or less) bookings for airline and hotel accommodations WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE.

For those on an extremely limited budget, watch out for the "Zero-Fares" or "Econo-light" fares. You will save a lot on the airfare but take note of the flight times. Most probably those booking on a promo will depart Manila late on the day of the departure and arrive early on the day of arrival. This means your 1st and Last days are already "wasted".

Personally I haven’t witnessed anyone questioned/checked in the airport on how much cash they are bringing.

To get the most out of your money, convert a small amount of your PHP/USD to HKD in a local FOREX/Bank. When you get to HK, this is the recommended money changer from USD to HKD. The airport has a slightly lower exchange rate than other money changers in HK. Get the exchange rate of the airport, when you see a money changer that has a better rate than the airport, you do not have to go to the suggested money changer below. Wing Hoi also has competitive rates if you are bringing PHP.

Hotels vs Hostels:

Most hotels (specially the cheap ones) have only 1 double bed or 2 single beds, so for those planning to sneak-in, hindi pwede mga malulusog. Another issue about sneak-ins, don't check-in all together, 2 lang magcheck-in tapos yun iba derecho na sa room, most hotels don't really care about sneak-ins basta huwag lang abuso. Mga 3-4 pax for a double occupancy room ok lang.

Universal Check-in Time is 2pm but hotels/hostels might be flexible depending on room availability. Check-out is 12 noon. Most, if not all, hotels and hostels allow you to leave your luggage before and/or after check-in/check-out free of charge.

IF you can fit 4 people in a hotel room for the price of 2, it will be a good alternative to staying in a hostel.

Those arriving in the evening or past midnight might be required by hostels to pay a deposit.

Disclaimer: Almost all hostels are located inside OLD buildings with unpleasing facades and small old-school elevators however buildings in HK are well-maintained and strictly supervised by the HK government. As long as you stick with the hostels below, safety will not be an issue.

PLEASE don't ask which hostel is the best, almost all these recommended hostels are the same in age, quality, size and price. Rooms are small with a small CR and are usually equipped with aircon and TV. Some hostels may provide a phone inside the room. The main difference is their location. For starters, Golden Crown / Taisan is almost beside the airport bus stop. While Marlboro and Sun Kong are right smack in the middle of a shopping district and a minute walk to an MTR exit. Honestly it doesn't matter which district you stay as long as the place is near an MTR exit, my personal preference for 1st timers is Tsim Sha Tsui.

AVOID HOSTELS LOCATED INSIDE CHUNGKING MANSIONS, it is a rundown place with plenty of touts and tambays. Pangit ng environment.

It is possible to get a room through walk-in but it is not advisable as you will have to carry your luggage around.

Now let's talk about what to do when your airplane landed at the Hong Kong International Airport.

HKIA (Hong Kong International Airport) is a big airport. Before your plane land or before you walk away from your plane, always PAY ATTENTION to the stewardess telling everyone the Luggage Counter Number to pick up your luggage or where you should be heading to for the HK immigration. If you don't want to look like a "first timer" just follow where the crowds go. Chances are you will have to take a 1 minute train ride from airport B to airport A.

1. Get off the plane
2. Pay Attention to the luggage counter number
3. Head to the Immigration Line (grabe the free maps on the way there)
4. After passing the immigration officer the door to his back is the luggage pick-up area
5. Find your luggage section (it's very easy to find coz it's in numeric order)
6. Pick up your luggage
7. Get brochures. they are everywhere in the luggage counter area.
8. After picking up your luggage, there is only 1 Door with a big signs "Something to declare / Nothing to Declare" and that's the exit door.
9. After you exit the "Something to declare / Nothing to Declare" door, you will find a few Airport money changer. (Do not change a lot as airport exchange rates are ripped off)
10. Look for the Customer Service Counter. This is the place where you buy your OCTOPUS CARD.*
11. Lunch at the airport or leave the airport and head directly to your hotel.

*CTS should be in this vicinity, if you can't find it, ask the customer service.

*It takes roughly an hour from touchdown to getting an octopus card.

Where to buy in the airport - Customer Service Counter in the Arrivals Hall near Burger King / Cafe de Coral. PAYABLE BY CASH (HKD) ONLY. They close before the last trip of the Airport Express to the city which is a little past midnight. If you cannot get an Octopus Card just pay the airport bus using cash. You can buy the Octopus Card in any MTR station’s customer service booth; ferry terminals MIGHT have a booth that sell it too, ask their customer service.

Can be used for following transportations: MTR, All Buses, HK Island Tram, Star Ferry, Peak Tram

Can also be used for: Wellcome, 7-Eleven, Mcdonalds, and a whole lot more places.

You can buy the Octopus Card in the Airport or in any MTR station. Minimum Reload is 50HKD, you can reload it in any 7-Eleven store or MTR station.

The Octopus card is a rechargeable contactless stored value smart card used to transfer electronic payments in online or offline systems in Hong Kong. Launched in September 1997 to collect fares for the city's mass transit system, the Octopus card system has since grown into a widely used payment system for virtually all public transport in Hong Kong except the Taxi.

There is a 50HKD deposit for the card upon purchasing it. The card is refundable if you opt to surrender it upon leaving HK. You may return your Octopus Card at the Customer Service in the airport or at any Octopus Card Service Center in HK. Your 50HKD can be refunded once you return the card plus the money left inside your octopus card.

Remember, when you buy an Octopus Card, you will have to pay 50hkd for the deposit and 100hkd to load it. Your octopus Card will start at 100hkd when you swipe it. Once you already used up the 100hkd and you can't find a place to load your card you may use up to 35hkd of your deposit. So, it's okay to see a negative sign in your Octopus Card. However, you can only go as high as negative 35hkd (-35hkd).

Don't panic when you wave your card and see a negative amount flashing on the screen. Ok lang yan. You still paid for the fare even it's showing negative. But again, you can only goes as high as negative 35 (-35hkd).

If your card is already -35hkd, it's still okay to refund the remaining amount of your deposit. However, if your card is less than 3 months old, you will be charged a 7hkd. So that means you will recieve a total amount of 8hkd na lang..hahaha..naku, i souvenier mo na lang yan...hehehe.

Typical Initial Load = 150 to 250HKD. Octopus Cards for Kids (3-11) are cheaper (around 70HKD).

If you have not added value to your Octopus for 1,000 days or above, your Octopus will be deactivated. You can go to any Customer Service Centre at MTR stations to have it reactivated.

The Octopus Card and its load expires 3 years after the last reload.

Airport Express Travel Pass

This is a special tourist card only available for visitors spending 14 days or less in Hong Kong and for many visitors does not represent good value or have the same flexibility as the standard “On-loan” card.

It is available in two denominations;

HK$220 AIRPORT EXPRESS TRAVEL PASS
Includes a HK$50 deposit and provides one trip on the Airport Express and three days* unlimited travel on all MTR lines but not to the border stations Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau. Since 1st October 2009 the pass also includes three days unlimited travel on MTR Light Rail and MTR bus.

HK$300 AIRPORT EXPRESS TRAVEL PASS
Provides two trips on the Airport Express and three days* unlimited travel on MTR all lines but not to the border stations of Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau. Since 1st October 2009 the pass also includes three days unlimited travel on MTR Light Rail and MTR Bus.

* The three days unlimited travel commences at the time of first MTR journey and ends 72 hours later.

These cards can be “topped up” in the same way as the standard Octopus Card and will then function as a "normal" Octopus Card. Once "topped -up" the card can be used on all other forms of public transport which accept Octopus Card in addition to MTR.

A refund of the deposit can be obtained by the same method as for the standard “On-loan” Octopus Card.

The A21 buses have luggage storage inside the bus. They also have an LCD screen stating the current stop and the next stop so you will know when to get off.

For the A21 and A11, the bus stop going back to the airport is USUALLY a couple of meters (or hundred meters) on the opposite side of the stop where you got off coming from the airport.

The MTR is Hong Kong's extremely efficient and easy to use subway system. You will not get lost using this. Most MTR stations have elevators for planning to use the MTR to get to Tung Chung with their luggage. Unlike the LRT/MRT, Hong Kong’s MTR stations have multiple exits. Inside the MTR station you will see maps and signs that will tell you where to exit.

Do not be intimidated by the interchanges. The stations are very dummy-proof. All you need to know is the direction of the train and what line the train belongs to. It is NOT hard to use. With pre-planning using the MTR website you will breeze through it.

Using your octopus card: Place it on top of the reader to enter (inside your station of origin), do the same when you exit (on your station of destination).

Using single journey tickets: Pretty much the same as the trains in Metro Manila. Insert -> Get -> Insert to exit.

The MTR will get you to almost anywhere (except places like Ocean Park, Aberdeen and Stanley)

READ THIS SECTION FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR ITINERARY HELP

It's not very difficult to plan a trip to Hong Kong. A whole day means you don't have a flight on the same day either inbound or outbound. You count how many whole days you have and then you insert the theme parks on these days. A trip to Macau will also occupy an entire day. If you have 3 whole days then you won't have a problem going to Disneyland, Ocean Park and Macau while still having enough time to see the other parts of HK as well as some shopping. There have been people who were able to do Disneyland with just half a day (2PM onwards) but there are no gurantees that you will be able to do the same. Maybe they didn't have kids with them, maybe they were lucky it's a weekday and not a holiday, maybe they only saw a couple of shows and attractions. If you have kids with you or if you are going on a weekend, allot a whole day for theme parks.

SOME FRIENDLY REMINDERS:

Know and set your priorities. Is it shopping? Sightseeing? Food trip? You won't be able to do all these in a single short-duration trip. So prepare to make compromises. You also won't be able to please a group of people with varying agenda. Disneyland and Ocean Park in 3 days practically takes away any decent opportunity for shopping. Add Macau in a 4 day trip then it will be the same result.

For first timers, please try your best not to do a 3 Day 2 Night (3D2N) Trip, sayang ang pera at sure bitin lang kayo. If possible, book the earliest flight out of Manila and the latest flight back to maximize your stay in HK.

DO NOT place Macau and an overnight stay inside Disneyland on consecutive days. Disneyland and Macau Ferry Terminals are very far apart. ie. If you are spending this night on a Disneyland hotel, do not go to Macau tomorrow.

Do not try to do too many things / sights on a limited trip duration. Do not make an hourly (beakdown) itinerary. Leave room for time allowance.

Take into consideration the type of people in your group. Children/Elderly will not be able to do many things in 1 day. Ocean Park & Disneyland can be exhausting.

It is always best to allot 1 day each for Disneyland, Ocean Park and Macau. You need almost the entire day for these places. During evenings you have a couple of hours for something else.

The best view from the Peak is from the Sky Terrace. Although it has an entrance fee, it is worth it as a one time experience. If you have no plans of going to The Peak you can go to the Sky 100 instead.

If you want to make it to the Symphony of Lights, leave the Peak by 7pm.

Disneyland vs Ocean Park: Go to their respective websites and see which 1 appeals to you more. We cannot decide for you. Some adults prefer Disneyland, some prefer Ocean Park. This is VERY subjective.

NOTE: Include in your post the time/origin of your flights both outbound and inbound as well as the age breakdown of your group. Also indicate what sights or theme parks you plan to visit.
Example: May 1 Manila-HK 8am Flight | May 5 Macau-Manila 7pm Flight

For those who want to do Disneyland, Ocean Park and Macau on a 4D3N trip, here are the following criteria:

1. You were able to get the 540AM Cebu Pacific flight on your 1st day and will do Ocean Park on your 1st day
2. OR you were able to get a very late flight on your last day and will do Ocean Park on that day
3. You will either have to bring your luggage with you on your last day to Ocean Park for Option 2 or leave early to retrieve you luggage before heading to the airport.
4. Doing these 3 in 4 days is going to be very hectic and tiring and is not recommended for those travelling with kids, elderly or both.
5. Visiting the Peak or Avenue of Stars will have to be after Ocean Park or Disneyland

For those who want to do Ngong Ping and/or Citygate on your 1st day:
1. Either leave your luggage at the airport (storage rental) then ride the S1 bus (same bus going back to the airport) then take the airport bus or

If you are going to buy a camera/lens below P20k, rid yourself of all the hassles, worries and warranty concerns and just buy your camera here in Manila (Hidalgo, Quiapo behind SM Quiapo). If you are going to get a Canon (which i highly recommend for everyone), all the stores in Quiapo offers the Canon Philippines Warranty so you don't have to worry about anything. As for lens and other accessories, make sure you know the Manila price as a price reference.

Apple has a universal price worldwide but the US has a significantly lower price. As for HK, the difference is not that big. For reference, you can visit Apple Hong Kong's Online Store.

Bottomline: YES MOST ELECTRONICS (Laptops/Digicams) ARE CHEAPER IN HK. However, there will always be risks in buying electronics abroad, Hong Kong is not an exception. If you think you are willing to take the risk of buying a very expensive item like laptops abroad including the risk of getting taxed upon return to Manila, go ahead. A lot of brands do NOT have international warranties which means when you have a problem, you cannot have them fixed in Manila. Lenovo and Asus as far as I know, have international warranties. Rarely do you find the same case for digital cameras.

How To Avoid Getting Ripped Off:

1. Before going to HK, know the item you want to buy and the price of the item in Manila and in the US (ie. Amazon.com).
2. Do not enter a store with zero knowledge of your target item, you will be victimized by "sales talk". Do your research at home.
3. Do not let store staff open sealed items when you don't have intentions of buying the item yet.
4. Do not give your credit card or money until you are in possession of a brand new / sealed version of the item.
5. Check your item thoroughly after paying and check if the box includes everything it should have.
6. If an item suddenly becomes out of stock, leave the store immediately and ignore their explanations.
7. Avoid stores with no locals inside or stores with aggressive and "friendly" staff on the lookout for customers.
8. If the price is too good to be true, chances are, it is.

HK has a restaurant in every street, kung madaming tao, malamang ok na yun, do not be intimidated, ask for an english menu. If all else fails, turo-turo ka nalang sa pictures or sa display. "English Menu" = Ying Man Choi Tan.

Bring disposable spoon and forks just in case restaurants only have chopsticks.

If you have to eat in a fastfood, Maxim's (MX) is a decent fastfood.

When is the best time to go to Hong Kong?

Winter Season (December to March) is the most relaxing and comfortable time to go to Hong Kong but besides the weather, there's little else to do since the "Sale Season" occurs during Summer. There are some sales during christmas and chinese new year but 90% of the clothes are for winter. Hong Kong can get very foggy during winter, as such, visit to the Peak is a hit-or-miss affair. A foggy bird's eye view of HK isn't really nice.

Summer Season (May to October) is similar to Manila's weather, very hot but moving around in Hong Kong can get extra uncomfortable because of the high humidity which gives the "sticky" feeling. Hong Kong's rainy season also falls on their summer, July and August has the highest rainfall count and the typhoons also arrive in these months. The Sale / Shopping Festival is from the start of July to the start of September. If the sky is clear, the view from the Peak is great.

Avoid going to Hong Kong when there are large-scale exhibitions or ongoing tournaments like the Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament because hotel prices will be significantly higher.

Finding Something (Store, Mall, Hotel, Restaurant, etc) and Getting There in Hong Kong

1. Google for it! (eg. search for "uniqlo hong kong" or "harbour city hong kong" or "citysuper hong kong")
2. Look among the results and go to the link that will give you the address/es of what you are looking for.
3. Copy the address and take special note of the district part of the address (eg. Tsim Sha Tsui, Mongkok, Central or Shatin)
4. Go to the 2nd link above (MTR website) and download a vicinity map of the district.
5. If the map is insufficient, enter the address in the search engine of the 1st or 3rd link above.
6. Combine steps 4 and 5 to find out how to get there by MTR or MTR + Taxi.
7. Do note that the location might be in an adjacent MTR station when using step 5. (eg. Jordan map instead of Tsim Sha Tsui map).

The Smoking Ban, as it is commonly referred to, bans smoking indoors in restaurants, workplaces, schools, karaoke lounges, as well as beaches, swimming pools, sports grounds and public parks. The ban came into force on 1 January 2007.

Don't get picked by pickpockets - always keep an eye on your belongings. They even work in teams, sometimes even involving a vehicle to suddenly stop in front of you while someone else does the lifting! I have also known an unsuspecting tourist shopping in a store who set his backpack down to try on some jeans and afterwards his wallet was missing! Remember: their hands are faster than your eyes!

Watch out for how much the taxi-driver charges you. There are some taxi drivers in sheep's clothing. They either trick the meter, go the long way, or cover up the decimal point of the fare on the meter. The safe thing is to know how much it should cost (the per kilometer charge and luggage charge are all posted inside), and also get a receipt from the driver. If they can't give you a receipt, copy down the licence number and the driver's name (shown on the dashboard). But then just a small percentage of the taxi-drivers are wolves.

Don't buy electronic products without marked prices: (This is probably the biggest tourist trap here into which many have fallen.) Many of the shops on Nathan Road in Kowloon selling electronic products don't display the prices on the items. Many tourists have been scammed or cheated. One ploy is to give you an unbelievably good price, then after they have your money, they say they are out of stock, offering you another item but at an outrageous price. Some tourists have said that even calling the police did not help.

Watch out when doing anything with a rickshaw: even taking a picture in, with, at, or even OF a rickshaw will cost you money! So settle on the price with the driver BEFORE you click that camera! There is no fixed price on the ride or a picture, but it is said that a picture costs HK$10 to $HK20 (US$1.25 - US$2.50).

Look both ways before crossing a street: if you are from a country where the traffic goes on the right, you will want to pay special attention to this since in Hong Kong when it comes to traffic, left is right and right is wrong! Besides, pedestrians don't necessarily have the right of way - at least many drivers think that.

Take along a pack of tissue and a windbreaker: a lot of indoor places and vehicles can be very cold with the air conditioning at full blast (even in winter), so take along a windbreaker. Except for more expensive ones, many restaurants don't provide napkins. Have a pack of tissue handy.

Getting mistaken for "I.I."s - I.I. is short for illegal immigrants. If you look Asian, be sure to carry your passport with you. It is required by law for everyone to carry either one's Hong Kong ID card or passport. Police officers routinely stop people on the street to check for ID. There is no "probable cause" clause that I know of. As long as you don't look right, you could be stopped and checked.

Avoid buying cooked food from hawkers pushing a little cart.

For the A21 and A11, the bus stop going back to the airport is USUALLY a couple of meters (or hundred meters) on the opposite side of the stop where you got off coming from the airport.

1) Depending on your carrier, you might not be offered snacks/meals so bring your own for your kids. You may also want to bring some toys or books to occupy them during the 2-hour flight. If you can, keep them awake before the flight while at the airport so they'd nap during the flight.

2) Hong Kong is generally stroller and wheelchair friendly as there are a lot of special lanes/ramps if you can't take the stairs. However, it may mean having to go the long way for elevators. bringing a stroller may also mean having to fold/unfold it when going down MTR stairs, buses, etc.

3) Strollers aren't allowed inside the Ocean Park cable car but there are special lanes and allocated area for people travelling with kids/strollers inside the Ocean Express (train).

4) Strollers/wheelchairs may be rented at Disneyland (HKD60/day with HKD100 deposit) and Ocean Park (HKD40/day with HKD60 deposit). You get the deposit back after returning the strollers and you get to keep the name card (a sort of ID attached to the stroller, with your chid's name written on it) as souvenir.

5) You may be tempted to get a harness for your child (and with the crowd in HK, it's logical to be scared you will lose your child). Be prepared to be stared at if you will use one. However, if your child can already walk, the harness might just be a hassle (get tangled up) as he runs to check whatever catches his fancy... so hold his hand instead or put him in a stroller. You may also consider putting your hotel's calling/business card in their pockets (or a printed ID with your contact info and temporary address in HK).

6) There's an Octopus card for kids so avail that. Kids 3 years old and below ride free in some buses so research/ask the driver.

7) Everyone should wear sunscreen when going out, wherever you are, but especially kids in HK... even during cold months. It's easy to get suburned there without you noticing.

8) Bring the usual meds your child might need (paracetamol, antihistamine). If you didn't, Watson's generally delivers.

9) For families with diaper-wearing kids, it's up to you to bring diapers to HK or just buy there. However, prices may be higher in HK and there may be sensitivity issues with your child. This also covers formula and baby food and baby soap/wash. But if you don't want to bring any of those, HK has enough groceries to provide what you may need.

10) Bring extra clothes for the kids especially if going to Disneyland and Ocean Park. Plan your visit in these parks because most kids get sick after being out in the heat then entering an air conditioned show/attraction. Pack these extra clothes togeher with other changing implements so you just have to get one bag when needed. And during the summer (which is also their rainy season), bring foldable umbrellas.

11) It helps infants' ears if they're breastfeeding/bottle feeding as the plane takes off and descends. It helps toddlers if they're chewing on something or drinking, or yawning, or you can cover their ears with your hands. If you're flying with a child that has colds, ask your pedia if you can give a decongestant to avid earache.

12) If you're bringing baby food, either pre-pack in disposable containers or bring all the things you may require for each feeding (water, extra spoons). Typical noodle houses/restaurants don't really give mineral water for free and may serve food that used preservatives, processed ingredients or msg.

13) For babies, a sling is a lifesaver.

14) Main attractions like Ocean Park and Disneyland have nappy-changing areas but not all establishments in the general HK area all offer a changing room or even toilets. So, don't wait till the last minute to change your child's diaper. Also consider pull-ups.

15) You can breastfeed anywhere, especially if you have a nursing cover. But you may have to go to the classier hotels if you want to pump. And you would need a cooler with ice pack if you're storing your milk. And you need to stay in a hotel with your own ref (with a good freezer) if you're storing your milk to bring back home.

Clarifications on the Currency Exchange - Double Conversion

Based on a computation by 1 of the Pexers here, double conversion in the Philippines is not recommended.

However, exchanging PHP to USD in Manila and then USD to HKD in Wing Hoi seem to be acceptable.

The rates of Wing Hoi are pretty much stable. Do your computations ahead of time by inquiring rates in our local banks and money changers.

In the end it's probably going to be just a difference of a few hundred pesos.
