ACCORDING to sources, De La Salle University school officials expect to name Gelacio “Gee” Abanilla as head coach of the Green Archers, replacing Dindo Pumaren, who resigned last September 11, 2011.
Abanilla, a La Salle alumnus who played under coach Derick Pumaren in the late 80′s, was point guard of back to back Green Archer championship teams in 1989 and 1990, beating FEU and UE respectively. He first served as part of Franz Pumaren’s original coaching staff when Pumaren was hired to helm La Salle in 1998, up until 2004, before leaving to serve as an assistant coach for several PBA teams, including the FedEx Express and most notably, the Barako Bull Energy Boosters under head coach Yeng Guiao.
In 2008, Abanilla assumed the title of head coach for the first time, taking the helm of La Salle’s sister school in the NCAA, the College of St. Benilde Blazers, taking over for Caloy Garcia. In what turned out to be his only season, the Blazers went from 1-11, dead last in the league with the suspension of the PCU Dolphins in Season 83, to 4-10 in Season 84. Abanilla later took a leave of absence, citing a hectic workload due to his PBA responsibilities, turning over the bench to then-assistant Richard del Rosario.
Abanilla is currently an assistant of Ato Agustin, head coach of the Petron Blaze Boosters in the PBA, champions of the most recent PBA Governor’s Cup.
In a related item, expected to serve in an adviser capacity to Abanilla is another former La Salle head coach, Joseph “Jong” Uichico, currently co-coach with Siot Tanquingcen of the Barangay Ginebera Kings.
As of writing though, statements from Abanilla and Uichico both say they have not yet been contacted by DLSU officials, and the school has yet to make a formal announcement. However, unless plans miscarry at the last minute, both will be named to their respective positions soon, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Also considered for the head coaching position were the aforementioned Franz Pumaren, recently inked to a head coaching job of the Shopinas Clickers in the PBA, and Barangay Ginbera assistant head coach Juno Sauler.
Once perennial Final Four fixtures, the Green Archers missed the post-season in the UAAP tournament for the second time in three seasons, finishing Season 74 with a 5-9 record, winning just a single assignment in the second round.
