I've always liked Mick Pennisi as a player ever since he joined the league back in 2000 as a direct hire of the Red Bull Batang Thunder on their maiden season. Pennisi is a rare talent not often seen in this side of the world. He's a legit 6'9 player, capable of scoring from inside, but is actually more comfortable shooting from beyond the arc. Of course, we also have a homegrown talent in Yancy De Ocampo who can do the same.

But what makes Pennisi different is his incredible basketball smarts. Pennisi is a rugged player, but is extremely smart and knowledgeable of the game. When things get difficult, expect to see Pennisi trying to settle his team on the court, slowing down the game and not making bad decisions. His presence is stabilizing, in as much as his leadership is understated.

Pennisi gets into the head of his defenders, normally imports who jockey for position inside. He treads the thin line between what's a foul and a non-foul, which is why several times, he can actually get away with contacts here and there. He's a solid rebounder, and a decent shot blocker, particularly during his younger days.

If you look at it, in the national team from 2002 to 2009, there are actually only 2 players who were part of these 3 teams. The first one is Asi Taulava, and this is not surprising because he's the country's best center. The other is Pennisi. And while some would say that Pennisi got the vote because he's 6'9, more than this, I think he was chosen by Uichico, Reyes and Guiao because he's 6'9, can shoot from outside, can defend big men and get to their skin, plays very smart, and is a warrior. Similarly, Pennisi, for all his physical ways, is actually a player favorite and is genuinely appreciated by his teammates. Of course, if you're playing for an opposing team, Pennisi is someone easy to dislike. But he's actually a good buddy off court, according to most of his player friends.

Some may not have noticed it but he has 700 threes to date. Tells you of his longevity and consistency...

This Barako Energy team is doing very well in the playoffs at this time. Credit that to their veteran players who simply know what to do come this stage of the tournament.

It's really a matter of taking the good with the bad here. Since the team has so many veterans, you don't expect them to show up every single playing night. They have their off nights; whether deliberate or otherwise, I won't surmise. But when the playoffs time come, you know these guys get more challenged and excited with the prospect of winning a championship.

If there's one team that can upset the Tropang Texters in the semifinals, it would be this Energy team. They have the height, the heft, and the skill to match up against TNT. When extremely focused, they are extremely difficult to stop - with the likes of Miller, Seigle, Tubid, Pennisi, Pena, Allado, Arbolda, Najorda, Salvacion, and their import (I hope White comes back), these guys simply know what to do inside the court.

Let's see how Joel Banal reacts in Game 2. They got bamboozled by a team that didn't rely on their import to deliver for them.

Can you imagine kung nakondisyon nang husto sina Miller, Arboleda, Najorda, Pena, Allado, Penissi, Tubid at Salvacion? Wow!

When White comes back, Baculi can play him off the bench para uminit agad ang locals. Sayang ang offensive potentials nila Tubid, Miller, and Peña kung lahat ng plays iso for the import.

Gabe Freeman will play for Barako Bull Energy this conference. Good for them. If BBE advances to the next round, TNT has their work cut out for them.

If Barako Bull advances to the next round, The import matchup will be very interesting. Freeman vs Harvey. Beast vs Beast. Two imports with the same playing style.

  19. #497
    GABE FREEMAN?

wow! seryoso talaga ang BBE! yan ang gusto ko, wag papatalo!

  20. #498
    WOW! Great development

Freeman should play SF to create more problems against other teams; with weinstein, miller, allado, and pena at first 5.

then arboleda, tubid, najorda, seigle, and penissi off the bench.

Freeman is a better team player and a better leader than white. Hopefully, this move is for the better
