Daniel Caluag's early exit in the BMX event officially marked the end of the Philippines' campaign in the 2012 London Olympics.
Another zero-medal output for RP athletes. Another four years of waiting.
I was no longer suprised with the performance of our athletes in London as I never expected them to bring home a medal in the first place. As I said in my previous posts, the only one with an outside chance of winning a medal among our 11 athletes was boxer Mark Barriga. And Barriga is not even considered a legitimate medal contender in the light flyweight division unlike Harry Tańamor before him.
The only consolation from this group was it performed better than the 2008 delegation, thanks to Barriga's victory in his first bout.
For those following Philippine sports for a long time, the scenes in the coming days will be very familiar. For sure there will be finger-pointing, bickering and blaming. Perhaps a senatorial investigation will also be conducted to look into the London debacle. Erring sports officials will expectedly get flak from sports columnists and fans. In return, those officials will come up with their own excuses and make it appear that everthing is okay.
And after everything has been said and done, the horror of London will slowly be forgotten and everything will be "back to normal". Before we know it all, the Rio Olympics will just be around the corner with the country hardly learning from the mistakes of the past Olympiad.
Winning an Olympic medal takes years of preparation and hardwork. There's no such thing as an overnight sensation. All those Olympic medalists earned their medals through rigorous trainig and constant participation in other international events.
How can we expect to win medals when our athletes are ranged against other athletes who are well-trained, well-fed, well-equipped, well-provided, well-supported and spent the last four years or so training for a particular Olympic staging.
How can we expect to win medals when our government allots only a small budget for sports while other countries (including our SEAG neighbors), whether government or private companies, pour in millions of dollars for sports development?
How can we expect to win medals when our sports agencies do not even have a sound long-term grassroots development program?
Ano tayo siniswerte?
The talent is there but talent alone is not enough especially in this modern world where every swimming stroke is analyzed and every stride is studied to produce better results.
Without proper training, international exposure, funding, nutrition and support, talent will just be wasted. Talent should be identified early and be nurtured through the years to get the best results. "Pag may itinanim may aanihin" as the old salawikain suggests.
Yes miracles do happen. But we cannot rely heavily on miracles just like our sports officials have been doing for the past two decades or so.![]()
While there's nothing really new, I still wonder what the President has to say about this yet another dismal performance.![]()
Just like what he said after the Philippines landed 6th place in last year's SEA Games. I will no longer be surprised if he will not give any statement about this since he doesn't care Philippine sports at all. oh which reminds me, did Penoy said something about sports development in the Philippines in his previous three SONAs?
Their other jin lost to an Italian last night.
Yung tatlong babaeng jins, poomsae event ata yun IINM. I'm not sure kung included ang event na 'to sa London calendar.
I've yet to see the Vietnamese jins. Sila talaga ang SEA powerhouse when it comes to taekwondo eh. It used to be the Philippines but we all know that it is already a thing of the past.
Ah. I thought you were referring only to London. My bad.
So, what qualifying tournament where they failed to get through are you talking about? If I'm not mistaken, ylle45 was referring to the three girls who won gold in the Asian championship ata. That event was poomsae something. Kung walang poomsae event sa London, para saan ang qualifying tournament?poomsae is NOT an Olympic event![]()
tig-aapat lang na divisions ng lalaki at babae ang pinaglalalabanan sa Olympic taekwondo. furthermore, each participating country can only send two men at two women.
they had two chances to qualify. yun una ay ang World Qualifiers na ginanap nun June last year. at kung hindi sila nakapasok dun, yun second chance nila ay yun Asian Qualifier na ginanap sa Thailand nun November last year. Si Japoy Lizardo lang ang ating consistent performer sa parehong tournament na yan. kaya lang kinapos siya. you can read the details in the first few pages ng thread na ito.
I sort of know the qualifying tournaments for taekwondo in the Olympics.
Mukhang hindi tayo nagkakaintidihan. Ylle45 was talking about the poomsae trio.
For instance, the judo bet he intended to join the Japanese Olympic Team kaso the qualification is very tough so he chose to represent Phils. Likewise, our bet in BMX bike, he originally intended to join US Team. Hope na mali observation ko.
Saka hindi ba mas magandang motivation kung ang target nila is the record ni gold medalist, or olympics record instead or their own personal best or the national record?
Um. Kei. People have to be realistic, yaknow. Ryan Papa's dedication as a swimmer was at a very high level during Atlanta but there was no way he was going to outswim Lenny Krayzelberg and Alexander Popov.
They'll try to win the gold SYEMPRE pero they can only do so much. They're not losing because the targets they set for themselves are low.
