Marestella Torres falls short on her long jump campaign---
Torres’ best jump of 6.22 meters in her last attempt fell way short of the qualifying threshold. She jumped 5.89 meters and 6.21 meters in her first two attempts. Her mark left her in 22nd place in a field of 28 athletes.

dont expect na magkaka-medak pa tayo. in fact, I don't expect that Herrera and Calioag to make it in the finals of their respective event.

Such a disappointing performance for Torres.

Olympics: Filipina long jumper Marestella Torres fails to make the cut
    August 8, 2012 4:06am

Filipina long jump bet Marestella Torres failed to qualify for the medal round, achieving a best distance of 6.22 meters on her last attempt, Tuesday (early Wednesday, PHL time), good for 22nd place out of a field of 28.

She notched just 5.98 meters on her first attempt, followed by 6.21 meters on her second try, before winding up with her best distance of 6.22 meters.

Great Britain's Shara Proctor topped the qualifiers with a 6.83 meter performance, one of four to hit the qualifying mark and automatically proceed to the finals.

The other three were Janay Deloach of the United States (6.81), Karin Mey Melis of Turkey (6.80), and Elena Sokolova of Russia (6.71).

Veronika Shutkova of Belarus rounded out the top 12 with a distance of 6.40 meters.

With Torres out of the running, that leaves just two Filipinos still in the hunt, namely runner Rene Herrera of the 5000m and BMX biker Daniel Caluag, both of whom will see action on Wednesday. - AMD, GMA News

Dapat ang training natin very very strict, pero sabihin naman ng mga athleta di maganda ang pag trato sa kanila. If you know the story of Lydia de Vega's training "sinabi sa kanya ng kanyang ama, huwag mong subukan! gawin mo!"

^ Just how ignorant Malacañang is about the present situation of Philippine sports?

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda even lauded the performance of RP athletes in last year's SEA Games in Indonesia saying that they did a good job. The country finished sixth overall - its worst performance ever.

I dont expect. Milagro pag nagkamedal pa tayo. I wont give any single sh!t with our current leader specially the POC and PSC officials, also Pacquiao (inspite of his influence) to have a long term sports program to get our very first gold medal or at least ensure a medal every olympic games.

    Yes, the country won medals in the Olympics in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1964, 1988, 1992 and 1996.

Don't be a hypocrite. If you know your sports history, why would you congratulate a country that finished sixth among 11 nations in this biennial meet. RP just placed ahead of traditional minnows Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei and Timor Leste.

My point is Malacañang is so not aware about the present situation of Philippine sports that it thought that the country's sixth place finish in Palembang/Jakarta is actually good.

    Darn..

Sayang ang talent ng mga Pinoy..

I do hope they'll overhaul the sports program.. Enough politics.. Replace the under-performing leaders.. I believe in meritocracy!

Furthermore, money would always be a problem.. I get it! It is a very accessible fundings.. All they (corporations) want is a better program, honesty and integrity...

at anong klaseng pag-iisip yan?!
siya ang lider ng bansa, he has to give inspiration!
yung iba ngang bansa, even their president or high officials nasa London pa nga to cheer their athletes kahit alam nilang impossibleng magka medal! But you don't need to be there dahil gastos lang yun, malaking gastos ba just to cheer for your country and send them off, yan yung spirit of Olympics!

you sound like an UGLY AMERICAN at the Olympics katulad nung nabasa kong article dito ah...

how do you expect support for Filipino athletes when the most basic of their needs- a modern, Olympics-standard sports complex, most especially a brand-new, 50,000-seat athletics and football stadium, here in Metro Manila- could be given to them by the State? prime property at Fort Bonifacio or the Manila Bay Reclamation Area could have been saved for that pero wala pa din. inconsistent programs plus lack of adequate support from both the State and the private sector equals poor performance of Filipino athletes in international sporting events.

Dapat itong mga athetes natin ay ma-train from their childhood katulad sa US at China.

I forgot to mention the universities and all the educational institutions sa Pinas.
