    Women's boxing update:

it seems the Philippines will be sending only two boxers in the coming World Boxing Championship in Qinhuangdao, China that will start on Sunday. Unfortunately, only one of them will be aiming for an Olympic slot. Nesthy Petecio beat veteran Alice Kate Aparri in a box-out for flyweight slot and will be the Philippine representative for that Olympic weight. All she has to do is to reach the quarterfinals and a ticket to London this July will be hers. Nevertheless, Aparri will join Petecio in the world championship and will be fighting in the bantamweight (54 kgs) which is unfortunately, not an Olympic category.

good luck to our lady boxers.

The only boxer (Nesthy Petecio) competing for an Olympic slot in Quinhangdao already lost.

    Golden Gabuco

Congratulations to Josie Gabuco for winning a gold medal in the 46kg division in the AIBA Women's World Championship in Qinhuangdao, China.

The Palawan native became the first ever Filipino boxer - male or female - to become world amateur champion at a senior level. What made her victory more impressive was the fact that she beat a Chinese boxer Xu Shiqi in the final. This is Gabuco's second medal in the world championships after winning a bronze medal in 2008.

Prior to her victory, the country's best performance in the event was the silver medal feat of Annie Albania in Ningbo in 2008.

It's just too bad that Gabuco's division is not included in the upcoming London Olympics women's boxing tournament.

Not really the all-time lowest but definitely the lowest in recent years. The Philippines sent one athlete to the 1924 Paris Olympics and four to the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

the 8 qualified athletes that the Philippines will be sending is the lowest since our country also sent 8 athletes in the 1932 Games at LA.

Yup and the 1932 RP Olympic team brought home three bronze medals, the country's best finish in the quadrennial multi-sport spectacle.

Fil-Am BMX rider Caluag earns London Olympic berth
    May 31, 2012 8:29pm

Filipino-American BMX rider Daniel Caluag became the eighth member of Team Philippines that will compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in July.

The 30th Summer Olympiad will be held in London from July 27 to August 12.

The 25-year-old Caluag, son of Bulacan-born Filipino migrant workers, earned enough ranking points in three tough qualifying tournaments—the last, the UCI BMX World Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom—to become the only Asian to clinch an Olympic berth in the BMX event.

"I knew from the start that Caluag would get it. He really trained and worked hard to earn the slot," said PhilCycling president and Tagaytay City mayor Abaham "Bambol" Tolentino.

"Hopefully we can finally get the attention we deserve to boost the morale of our riders," he added.

Tolentino said he will request the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to proved a P25,000 a month retro-active allowance to Caluag, a four-time top BMX rider in the US.

Alexis Vergara, another Filipino campaigner, failed to qualify after missing the cut.

A field of 175 riders from all over the word competed in the World Championships where the top 60 finishers earned slots to the London Games. BMX made its debut in the 2008 Beijing Games.

Philippine team Chief of Mission Manny Lopez received an email from the London Organizing Committee for Olympic Games (LOCOG) confirming Caluag's Olympic spot.

"We are proud to have Mr. Caluag in our team. We know he'll be a big asset to our small group. And becoming the only Asian to qualify is indeed gratifying," said Lopez.

Swimmers Jessie Khing Lacuna and Jasmine Alkhaldi, boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, Filipino-Japanese judoka Tomohiko Hoshina, skeet shooter Brian Rosario, long jumper Marestella Torrres and steeplechaser Rene Herrera are the other Filipino athletes that qualified in London.

Lopez is hoping one or two more athletes from archery and weightlifting will qualify to make his target of 10 Filipino Olympians. — JVP, GMA News

Archers Javier, Cabral make PH Olympic team

By Abac Cordero, The Philippine Star
    Posted at 06/24/2012 3:12 PM | Updated as of 06/24/2012 3:12 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Archers Mark Javier and Rachel Cabral earned tickets to the forthcoming London Olympics following their steady performances in the just-concluded World Archery Championships in Ogden, Utah.

With Javier and Cabral in, the number of Filipino athletes who will vie in the Summer Games scheduled July 27 to Aug. 12 has risen to 11, with one more boxer hoping to catch the last bus.

Terry Lim, secretary-general of the National Archery Association of the Philippines, yesterday said Javier and Cabral worked hard for their inclusion to the London Olympics.

Lim said Javier, who also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, finished 42nd in his event while Cabral was 37th out of more than a hundred participants.

Lim said 35 countries saw action in Ogden event which also served as the third and last qualifying tournament for the London Olympics.

“Eric and Rachel really did very well,” said Lim, adding that the there were only eight Olympic slots for women and seven for men that were offered in Ogden.

“They really worked hard under our Korean coach, Chun Jae-Hun, who came in last May. Having a Korean coach really had a big effect on our team.”

Already in the London-bound Philippine team are tracksters Marestella Torres and Rene Herrera, swimmers Jasmine Alkhaldi and Jessie Lacuna, boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, BMX rider Daniel Caluag, judoka Tomohiko Hoshina, shooter Brian Rosario and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

Except for Caluag and Hoshina who are based overseas, the Filipino Olympians will be treated to a send-off party tomorrow evening at the McKinley Hill Village.

The fate of boxer Charly Suarez remains in the hands of the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) following a request from the Philippine Olympic Committee for his inclusion as a wild-card entry.

Suarez failed to qualify outright to London when he lost to China’s Liu Quiang in the lightweight final of an Asian qualifying tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan a couple of months ago.

But Filipino officials believed that Suarez got the raw end of the officiating, and therefore he deserves a slot to London. Even boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao wrote the AIBA on behalf of Suarez.

Manny Lopez, chef de mission of the Phl delegation to London, said Suarez has until July 9 to be included in the London lineup because after that date no other inclusion will be considered.

“I believe that anyone among them can deliver a medal in London. They wouldn’t be here if they can’t, whether they made it there by merit or via wild card,” said Lopez.

It seems we were taken for a ride by AIBA as we were made to believe that they will pick a boxer from Asia to fill up the remaining lone spot in mens lightweight division. Instead they chose a boxer from Central America (Panama) to complete the roster of participation of this division.

so it's final, we will be sending 11 athletes to London that will start in 27 days.
