Seoul, South Korea | Korea "Better Than You" Thread II

    Seoul, South Korea Thread 1 - http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/...php?p=58406324

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

New Tourism Slogan Is “Korea, Better Than You

Following on from “Korea, Be Inspired”, “Dynamic Korea”, “Korea, Sparkling”, “Well-Being Dreamhub Korea”, “Korea, birthplace of Kim Yu-na”, and “Korea, Fighting!”, the Ministry of Tourism has announced its new slogan for ‘Visit Korea Year 2011-2013’. “Korea, Better Than You” was selected yesterday from short-list submitted and voted upon by members of the public.

“People were asked to consider the most essential aspect of Korean culture which could quickly be conveyed to a foreign audience.” said Minister of Culture, 49-year-old Kim. “I think making the slogan a public competition has delivered a wonderful result which is really going to intrigue people in other countries and make them want visit Korea so they can properly educate themselves about this country.”

Kim admitted that it was unfortunate that foreigners living in Korea had not been able to participate in the process due to problems with the online recognition of Alien Registration Numbers, and immigration rules which prevent many foreigners from undertaking non-approved work in Korea, which thinking of a slogan could be classed as. But he hoped that these problems could be resolved in time for Visit Korea Year 2013-2015. “Korea is increasingly a multicultural country and the Ministry of Culture and the Korean Immigration Service certainly want to know the views of foreigners living here when it is convenient.” he said.

“Korea, Better Than You” will begin appearing on all buses in Seoul, and in other prominent public places where foreigners are likely to see them, from 2011. The Ministry of Tourism may also for the first time consider running the Visit Korea Year adverts outside Korea.

    from TIME.com's city guide:

Seoul: Need to KnowBy Jennifer Veale

Arriving. Taxis are the fastest way to get to downtown from Incheon International Airport and should set you back about $70 to $80. Limousine buses are another excellent option. About a handful of these very comfortable and clean buses depart from the airport every 20 minutes or so and stop at all the major hotels. Catch them at the curb when you walk out of Immigration and Customs. They cost a mere $12 and take 80 to 90 minutes to make the 40-km (25-mile) trip to Seoul, versus an hour or so for private taxis. Look for signs with your hotel name.

Getting Around. There's an abundance of cabs in the city, so hailing one is fairly effortless (except after 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights). But Korean cabbies do have to pay an arm and a leg to top off their tanks, so fares can be high — use taxis judiciously, especially during rush-hour traffic. Many taxi drivers don't speak English, but they're familiar enough with foreigners' wild mispronunciation of common Korean names and sounds, so they seem to know where to go. (Writing things down in Korean always helps.) Also, cabs are kitted out with GPS, so drivers can reach most destinations with just a phone number.

Otherwise, make good use of the subway system — it's super-efficient, clean, extensive and ridiculously cheap. Subway signs and maps are in both Hangul, the Korean alphabet, and English.

Tipping. Korea is basically a no-tip culture. Cab drivers don't expect any reward for their services and it's pretty much the same for staff in local restaurants as well as hotels. Even porters and bellboys don't expect a tip.

Survival Skills. Seoul is a fairly safe city for travelers, and tourist information booths are scattered all over to help you navigate the capital both culturally and geographically. Telephone operators at a 24-hour tourist hotline (dial 02-1330 from a cell phone) also seem to be able to answer any question thrown at them. Lastly, Seoul is often touted as one of the most wired cities in the world, but getting your overseas BlackBerry to work here is no easy feat, as Korea is on an incompatible network.

For a 7:30 AM flight back to Manila, what is the best way to get to Incheon airport from Seoul area? If you need to get to the airport at around 4:30 AM, are taxis the only option?

    Thanks!

my friends had this flight last Feb and what they did was they took the last AREX (airport express) trip from Hongdae to Incheon at 11pm-12mn Seoul time and stayed at Incheon airport until check-in counter opened. Option is to wait for 1st Arex trip (before 6am) or night bus (which even my friend's Korean friend advised them not to use). They paid for one unused night at the hostel but it's better than be late in checking in esp it's still winter back then.

Is the month of May too humid for a vacation in SK?

  9. #9
    ^
no. May is still spring. Late spring.

The weather gets hot and humid from the second week of July to the second week of August. Climate change, though, has messed this up (it rained the whole summer, and it is already September but it is still relatively hot).

there is a sauna at the basement of the airport. i think they have common sleeping rooms...

October is autumn. Malamig na yon pero di pa naman tipong kailangan na ng layers. Tipong Baguio or Tagaytay during daytime, but it could go down to as low as 8-9 degrees C sa gabi during the 1st two weeks.

^Instead of posting stuff like that, let's ask the mods or admin to merge the thread na lang. Alam naman natin ang mga forumers, kung ano ang unang makita doon magpopost. Doon may nagtanong so natural may sasagot doon. Ganon din naman dito.

I'll PM Admin Caramba to ask him to merge the threads.

PS: No offense, pero sa pagkakaalam ko naunang nagawa yung isang thread kesa dito.

I tried creating a comprehensive Page 1 for the SK thread, ang hirap.
Kaya taas-kamay ako kay commoner kasi hindi basta-basta yung nagawa nya sa HK thread.

Basta 3G-capable ang phone, it will work in Korea. Pag quadband lang hindi pwede. I have a friend na apat na klaseng phone ang dinala noon sa Korea (Blackberry, HTC, etc) walang gumana kahit isa kasi puro pala hindi 3G-enabled yung phone na dala nya. Kala nya kasi basta quadband pwede na.

My old Sony Ericsson c905 worked there, as well as Samsung Corby Pro. Samsung Omnia gumana rin pati yung Nokia N-something (N70 ata) nung friend ko.
