MANILA, Philippines – The UP Pep Squad, part of the million fans of Madonna here, has snagged the best stint of their career to date.
On Monday, the reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance Competition champions where chosen to do a flash mob—a performance of a group of people in a public place—at Sm Megamall, following the worldwide release of Madonna’s 12th studio album “MDNA.”
Creating a sure spectacle for the curious crowd, the team of Iskos and Iskas grooved, performed stunts and assembled pyramids to Madonna’s latest tunes. It can be recalled that last year, it was also the UP Pep Squad who wore the Madonna-ish blonde hair and danced to the Madonna-medley in the cheerdance competition, a performance that earned them their second consecutive win in the tilt.
‘MDNA’ up close
The Queen of Pop’s 12-track album was critically welcomed internationally due to its allusion to the drug MDMA or ecstasy.
In an article by Yahoo! News, the pop icon has explained that the meaning of her album is actually “threefold”—a reduction of her name, an abbreviation for "Madonna DNA," and a “reference to ecstasy” and the “euphoria” often experienced by its users.
The album is characterized by her signature upbeat dance songs like "Gang Bang" and "Girl Gone Wild," in which she sings lyrics like "I know good girls don't misbehave, misbehave, but I'm a bad girl anyway."
Although supporters of Madonna were clearly exhilarated by this new album, some music critics were not entirely blown away by her work.
American newspaper NY Daily News writer Jim Farber attacked the “age inappropriate” song choices of the 53-year-old singing superstar.
“Much of ‘MDNA’ has more the flip zip of a disc by Katy Perry or Ke$ha than something by a woman who may be older than both their mothers. Then again, we are talking about Madonna, a woman who, at this point, seems just as hellbent on giving the finger to expectations about age that she once gave to assumptions about sex,” he wrote.
Alexis Petridis of British newspaper The Guardian, gave the album three out of five stars, calling it "business as usual" for the pop star.
Petridis added; "What's striking isn't that Madonna is still with us...so much as where she still is: a commanding presence at the absolute center of pop, as capricious and changeable a genre as music has to offer."
The album’s first single, “Give Me All Your Luvin'” featuring Nicki Minaj & M.I.A, claimed the top spot on the Billboard’s most popular songs played in dance clubs chart for the week ending March 31.
