My bad, Gunnar. Thanks for pointing that out. Couldn't be Bong Solomon since the power forward suited up for the PHL national team in the 1991 SEA Games held here in Manila where it won the gold medal. Solomon ended up to be the #2 draft pick overall of the 1992 draft.

I should have written Rene "Bong" Hawkins who was drafted by Presto at #2 in the 1991 Draft. Alaska had the #1 and #3 picks, which they used to tab Araneta and Quilban. Curiously, Hawkins ended up to be an Alaska player himself, being a vital cog of the Alaska grandslam team of 1996.

Raymundo had eligibility problems because of academic deficiencies at Letran, if I'm not mistaken. Which was why he had to be sent back to the PBL and eventually joined the Batang Thunder franchise the year after.

    Thanks for the correct.

Just to further betray my memory lapses, apart from the Solomon mistake I made in a previous post, I also made 2 different mistakes as well in the same post:

    1. Aris Franco wasn't 29 years old when he was drafted by Shell in the 1990 PBA Rookie Draft. He was actually 31 years old already by then. What I know is that he's not the oldest rookie to play in the PBA but he's the oldest rookie to be drafted. The oldest rookie may actually be Lou Gatumbato, if I'm not mistaken. But since he wasn't drafted, he only got to play as a free agent. Franco, having been drafted, was able to play for a season with Shell.

    2. The year Messrs. Araneta, Hawkins (again, not Solomon), Quilban and Gayoso got drafted was in 1991, not 1990. The 1990 rookie draft saw Peter Jao of Presto being the top draft pick. His batchmates included, if I recall it right, were Dodong Postanes, Larry Villanil and eventual ROY Gerry Esplana.

    Sorry for the faux pas...

DEADLINES SET FOR 2012 PBA ROOKIE DRAFT ON AUG. 19

For PBA rookie hopefuls, the big day is August 19 as the league holds the 2012 PBA Rookie Draft at
    Robinson’s Midtown Manila.

But first, they’ll have to note some important dates on their calendar.

The Commissioner’s Office has set July 6 as the deadline for Fil-foreign hopefuls to file their
applications and submit all the documentary requirements. Homegrown talents have until August 3 to
    turn in their applications.

July 10 is the last day of the issuance of preliminary list of prospective Fil-foreign draftees to
the teams, which will also have the period of July 11 to Aug. 2 to contest the eligibility of any
    applicant.

Rookie applicants go through biometrics on Aug. 15, a day before the final list of candidates for
    the draft is released.

The league expects another good yield of young talents for the 2012-13 PBA season.

Last year, the PBA harvested a bumper crop in the Draft with former La Salle standout Jvee Casio
    emerging as the top pick.

Included in the talent-laden 2011 pool were other first-rounder draftees Paul Lee, Chris Lutz,
Marcio Lassiter, Mark Barroca, Mac Baracael, Jason Ballesteros, Allein Maliksi, Reil Cervantes and
    Dylan Ababou.

Casio and Lassiter both went to Powerade and instantly created an impact, helping the Tigers to a
second-place finish behind the Talk n Text Tropang Texters in the Philippine Cup.

Picked in the second round were Magi Sison, John Raymundo, Eric Salamat, Julius Pasculado, Ariel
Mepana, Brian Ilad, Gilbert Bulawan, James Martinez, Kenneth Acibar, Paul Sorongon and John Marc
    Agustin.

With a deep draft roster, the league stretched the Draft beyond two rounds.

Mark Cagoco and Filemon Fernandez were drafted in the third round and Gerald Lapus came in the
    fourth.

Fil-Ams Hodge, Ellis skip PBA draft, join SMART-Gilas cadet pool

Filipino-American standouts Cliff Hodge and Chris Ellis would not be part of this year’s PBA draft, choosing instead to be part of the SMART-Gilipinas Pilipinas national program’s cadet pool, which will be composed of top amateur basketball players in the country.

The two players will continue to carry the national colors, after helping Sinag Pilipinas win the Southeast Asian Games gold medal last year.

According to SMART-Gilas team manager Butch Antonio, the cadet pool will complement the players from the PBA who are also part of the program.

“The cadet pool will be tasked to represent the country in the SEA Games and Asian Games, while the pro pool will represent the country in the FIBA Asia Championship and hopefully, the FIBA World Cup,” said Antonio.

Other amateur standouts are expected to join the cadet pool, whose roster is still being finalized.

The formation of the pool hearkens to the original batch of SMART-Gilas players from the collegiate ranks. JVee Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz, Mac Baracael, Mark Barroca, Dylan Ababou, and Jason Ballesteros spent three years with SMART-Gilas before joining the PBA.

Antonio believes it helps both the league and the players.

“Once these amateur players decide to enter the PBA, hinog na hinog na sila. On the PBA’s part, it’s also good for the league dahil handa na rin yung mga rookies. Para na rin silang beterano,” said Antonio.

Alaska’s Trillo blasts SMART-Gilas move to sign amateurs to cadet pool

    Selfish and unfair.

That was how Alaska coach Luigi Trillo described the move of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national program to sign top amateur players to its cadet pool, disallowing them from joining the PBA draft.

Trillo, whose Aces squad is expected to get one of the first two picks in the upcoming draft, said that while PBA teams have been willing to lend its players to the program, SMART-Gilas deprives pro squads the opportunity to improve themselves.

“I find what Gilas is doing is very selfish. They get the PBA pros first, then they have a cadet pool barring those picked from joining PBA draft,” posted Trillo on his Twitter account.

Alaska players LA Tenorio, Sonny Thoss, and Mac Baracael are part of the 16-man PBA selection that will form the core of SMART-Gilas. A team composed mainly of PBA players will compete in major international tournaments, while personnel from the cadet pool will join minor competitions.

Trillo told InterAKTV that Alaska management was originally not inclined to let its players join the national team, but softened its stance.

“We are lending our best pro players. The draft is our only chance to strengthen our line up. Why deprive teams who are willing to lend?” said Trillo.

Earlier, top Filipino-American prospects Cliff Hodge and Chris Ellis chose to skip joining the upcoming PBA draft, opting instead to join the SMART-Gilas cadet pool.

“It would be fair enough if these guys who will join the cadet pool will make themselves available in the draft. They can still play for the national team once they’re needed. You don’t need Hodge or Ellis for a SEABA tournament,” said Trillo.

Ayan nag aalburuto na si Luigi mukhang patay na patay syang makuha si Hodge. Ginto na naging bato pa.

  15. #275
Alaska might settle for Abueva, ayun eh kung hindi rin mahatak ni manay sa cadet.

so goodbye Thoss,Baracael at Tenorio naba sa NT?

  16. #276

  17. #277
I still believe Hodge & Ellis will beat the deadline for Fil-Fors & apply for the 2012 Rookie Draft.

  18. #278
    Interesting piece there, Than.

Would you have the schedule for the following:

    1. Lottery draw - when we will all know who will win the top pick of the draft

    2. Draft Application deadline - when all rookie applicants should have submitted their intent to join the PBA

I assume the draft application deadline would come PRIOR to the lottery right? The lottery will only be determined at the end of the Governor's Cup, if I'm not mistaken. And the most likely candidates to figure in the lottery would be Air 21 and Alaska...

I believe, as in the last few years, the lottery draw happens in the Governors' Cup Finals, not sure though.

The draft application deadline for fil-for is July 6, August 6 for homegrown.
