Malakas maglaro si Maclean Sabellina. Poor Man's Arwind Santos nga tawag ko dun.

Joey Villar: Ran into Letran assistant coach Kris Reyes and asked him how many years can Kevin Alas play in the NCAA. 2 Years. That's bad news for everyone.

  8. #248
That rule only applies for Fil-Foreign players.

Wrong. Pure Pinoys or local-bred ballers are required to play in the D-League. I dunno if it's one conference or 1 year.

How about Slaughter? I think he doesn't need to play in the D-League anymore...to qualify for PBA rookie draft.

Yup. Pero pag Fil-For 2 conferences dapat maglaro.

No need for Greg to play, kasi naglaro na siya for Gilas(same situation with Lutz and Lassiter).

Hodge atop of heap as NLEX dominates D-League

Clifford Hodge continues to improve his stock for this year’s PBA draft as the NLEX Road Warriors remain unbeaten in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.

The 24-year old former Hawaii Pacific University player is averaging 16.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks for the 9-0 Road Warriors and is currently making a strong case for MVP against Cebuanna Lhuillier’s Vic Manuel and Blackwater Sports Elite’s Kelly Nabong.

Manuel, the reigning Aspirants Cup MVP, is averaging a league-best 17.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while Nabong averages 15.1 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game.

Cebuana Lhuillier is currently tied with the Big Chill Superchargers for second place with identical 7-2 slates while Blackwater Sports is in fourth place with six wins and three losses.

Other notable players in the ongoing D-League tournament include Cagayan’s Junar Arce (12.2 ppg, 11.1 rpg), Erase Plantcenta’s Allan Mangahas (13.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 4.4 apg), Big Chill’s Charles Keith Jensen (11.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.4 spg) and RnW Pacific Pipes’ Raymund Ilagan (9.0 ppg and 7.5 ppg)

Yes, and there was a previous rule in the PBA in the past where draft applicants have to be at least 23 years old before joining the league. This was in response to the request of the defunct Basketball Association of the Philippines to make sure that the amateur players would have at least served the national team for around 4-5 years granting that they started suiting up for the country when they were 18 or 19.

As a matter of fact, Vergel Meneses would have been drafted much earlier than 1992 but was disqualified by the PBA from joining because he was deemed underage back then. If I'm not mistaken, he tried to apply in 1990, the same year when Alex Araneta was the top draft pick, Bong Solomon was the 2nd overall pick, Eugene Quilban the 3rd pick overall and eventual ROY, and Jayvee Gayoso rounding up the Top 4 in their batch.

This rule took effect because of sorry state of amateur basketball after Batch 1989 invaded the PBA. Top amateur stars and national players like Benjie Paras, Nelson Asaytono, Bong Alvarez, Dindo Pumaren, Boy Cabahug, Ato Agustin, Joey Guanio, Zaldy Realubit and other topnotch amateurs like Peter Aguilar, Dondi Roque, Ric Ric Marata, Romy Dela Rosa, etc. joined the pros and orphaned the amateur basketball landscape. Our 1989 national team that competed in the SEA Games ultimately lost the gold medal to Malaysia in heart-breaking fashion - the first and only loss of our country in the Southeast Asian setting. Players from this team included Jun Limpot, Noli Locsin, Dodong Postanes, Jun Reyes, etc and coached by Derrick Pumaren and backstopped by Yeng Guiao.

Because of the miserable state of our amateur basketball back then, the PBA agreed to set a minimum age requirement coupled with minimum number of units accomplished in college for each PBA freshman. Hence, the rule was 23 years old on or before the day of the start of the PBA first conference and at least 48 academic units completed in college. The latter became a different problem for people like Marlou Aquino and Kerby Raymundo.

Hence, at 24, Cliff Hodge and the others are at the right age when they join the PBA next season. I remember one of the oldest rookies to ever join the PBA draft (and getting drafted) was Shell's Aris Franco who was 29 years old when recruited by the Turbo Chargers. Raymundo, at 19 years old in 2000, may be one, if not, the youngest player ever to suit up for a PBA team with Red Bull Thunder.

chris jackson i think entered the PBA at the age of 30....

Jay, clarification lang. Did Alaska has the privilege of having the 1&2 pick for the draft having Araneta and Solomon as 1 & 2?

I remember the Marlou Aquino case. This was the reason why Adamson was suspended in the UAAP due to the falsification of records or something like that.

One more thing. When Red Bull joined the PBA and brought with them their amateur players together with Raymundo, and he was still young then at 19 which is the reason why he was relegated again to the amateurs. Why did the PBA allow Raymundo to return to Red Bull after reaching his age requirements and not join the draft?

    Thanks
