    Hi to everyone!

Need help... advise. Limited budget kaya kuha muna ako ng payo at ideas sa inyo before I do anything. Obviously, I'm posting this bcoz I'm not a green thumb person, have no background about plants, landscaping or related fields.

Here's our project: My mom just got a commercial stall in Quiapo to put up a parlor. Floor area is 14 ft (frontage) x 31 ft. Height of the ceiling is about 15 ft. This is not a high-end business. Haircut cost 50pesos, located at Quiapo, you can imagine ano profile ng clientele.

The only entry / opening is at the front. No door, windows or vent at the rear or side walls. You can imagine na kulob at di dumadaloy ang hangin dito.

There are plans now to install air ducts along the length of the stall with an exhaust fan positioned at the front. This will allow some circulation of air at the rear of portion of the stall. But I imagine that would not be enough. Having aircon is not in consideration dahil di kakayanin ang malaking electric bill/ overhead.

So, napag-usapan namin maglagay ng halaman sa dulo along the rear wall. The rear wall and floor is concrete, kaya pwedeng mabasa kung magdidilig na halaman.

Ang tulong o payo na kailangan ko po ay makakuha ng ideas anong klaseng halaman ang bagay na ilagay dito.

I can easily go to a garden/plant vendor in QC or Pasig or those located along the PNR riles down south. I'm even willing to drive to Bulacan to buy plants. But having no knowledge about plants, baka ma-sales talk lang ako or mabighani sa ganda ng isang halaman and buy something not appropriate. I come here to get ideas muna and use that when I go out to buy our plants.

    Considerations are:
    A. Ang paglalagyan--
    1. Walang direct sunlight.
    2. Constantly mainit ang lugar ng Quiapo.
    3. Plants will be positioned along the width of the concrete rear wall, 14 ft wide x 15 ft high.

    B. Uri ng halaman.
    1. Madali i-maintain, tipong didiligan lang and leave it there. Not to keen on getting something that needs constant or regular pruning. Occasional attending aside from watering is okay.
    2. Hindi binabahayan ng lamok. I was told may halaman na mosquito repellant, ano po yun?
    3. Pots/ paso lang po ang paglalagyan.
    4. Hanging plants or "wall plants" is in consideration given that the rear wall is 15 ft high.
    5. It doesn't necessarily have to be flowering plants. Okay lang kung yung madahon lang. (But flowering plants that doesn't need constant and regular attending is in consideration.)

    C. Budget
--Got no idea how much we can afford for this now. But I think pwede kami bumili ng pakonti-konti until we get to finish the project. Like, worth Php2,000 muna, then another 2K after 1 or 2 weeks... until matapos.

I am not a partner in this business, I'm just helping my Mom execute ideas we have discussed.

Apologies if we prefer something that doesn't need "constant and regular attending". The reason being, we have no idea who among the staff in the parlor has the inclination to be the "gardener" of the parlor. Okay kung meron, pero pano pag wala, kaya yan po ang criteria namin.

I will be grateful to every idea you share. Thank you in advance, guys.

Hi. Just to give my 2 cents worth...Rhapis excelsa (lady palm) is almost no-maintenance. Madilim nga lang ang effect coz dark ang leaves. It grows in low to medium light. Perfect as potted plants to cover your wall as a sort of architectural accent pwedeng get them in diff heights. Lower ones in front, taller ones at the back. Other common indoor/household plants that can tolerate low light/occasional watering are schefflera, and philodendrons.

    Rhapis

    Schefflera

    Philodendron

    Parlor palm

If you want to lighten up the rear end of the salon, you'll need to choose plants that have lighter-colored foliage. O kaya choose plants w/ varying leaf shapes, sizes, and patterns para di boring tingnan and maaliwalas sa mata. Try

Dumbcane (Dieffenbachia) (medium light)- -this comes in different varieties, iba-ibang pagka-speckled ng leaves.

Mother-in-law's tongue / Snake plant (Sansevieria)

    Evergreen (Aglaonema)

*Just remember, the lesser the light the lesser water they need. Pag soggy ang soil, baka mag rot yung plant kaagad. Surface of the soil should be up to an inch down dapat dry bago tinutubigan para di ma-overwater.

The other regulars here can probably help give you ideas for your wall. I agree, you have to find a way to have good air circulation inside the parlor coz even if your plants need little watering sometimes an extremely humid or extremely dry atmosphere can affect the plants. Good luck to you.

Hi regulars! I'm back. Silip-silip lang. Just want to share a few of my delights this time of the year.
The rain in the afternoons I think is helping some of my plants to bloom. Not sure what this is called but my research says it could be some sort of Jasmine... probably Orange Jessamine (Murraya paniculata)... not really sure I think "Kamuning" tawag dito(?) This is its first time to bloom after so many years.

It's near my bedroom window so parati ko sya naamoy, specially at night. This is how it big it is na. Konti lang yung blooms. Mga 2 clusters of flowers lang. And it's kinda growing pahaba kaya di masyado compact ang foliage, maybe coz I didn't prune it. If I had, baka years pa bago mag bloom. This one is growing directly on the ground.

This on the other hand is in a pot. Suffocated na I guess yung roots. Kaya siguro the leaves are a bit yellow. Halos konti na lang soil nya.

Here are my cactus offsets lately. Lumalaki na yung iba. I just changed its location where it can get more east sunlight hoping that it'll grow more roundish instead na elongated.

Btw, anyone familiar with the Asi Tava plant? Not sure if that's the right spelling. I'm just spelling it the way I hear it.
We're trying to grow more of this on a small soil bed.

Sabi it's medicinal (good for hypertension and diabetes) and can be eaten as a salad. I've tasted it w/o any dressing. Parang spinach ang texture and taste.

Mr. Gugel says it's called Leaves of God. Also known as a Lucid dreaming herb. It helps daw in giving you a good night's sleep.

Anybody familiar with this and it's uses? Curios lang.

  15. #4775
    @Teesheel,

Thank you for your reply! That's one big help.

I am most likely to choose plants with light colored leaves, you have a point it makes the interior brighter. But I will still put a few that are dark colored para may variety at more interesting ang appearance.

I forgot to mention in my first post, I had planned to put 3 irregular rows of potted plants against the wall. At 14 ft in width, marami-rami yan. My Mom can afford to allocate 3 ft deep of floor space from the wall for these plants. She is sold to the idea this will make the place better overall. Basta lahat nasa paso lang. She doesn't want to build a pocket garden there. She wants it simple lang.

So to other enthusiast and hobbyist, I look forward to your suggestions.

The images shared by TeeSheel, from my interpretation of the pics, they seem to be large plants. Any suggestions for "small indoor plants", those that are about 2 feet at full maturity, can be small leaf or large leaf plants. I'll place these at the front row.

    Salamat po uli sa lahat.

Rhapis, Dumbcane and Schefflera can grow tall. But the Chinese evergreen and Sansevieria are managable in height -- at most 2 ft. height.

    Re: Ashitaba plant

Ok.. I guess I was wrong about my post above. When this plant was given to us ang sabi Ashitaba (Asitava/Acitaba) daw sya. Upon more research on Google it seems na that this is sometimes confused as the real-deal ASHITABA (aka Tomorrow Leaf Plant or Angelica Keiskei Koidzumi) when in fact, the one we have pala, this on is called Gynura procumbens (aka Longevity Spinach/Cholesterol Spinach). However, more or less, same ang health benefits of the Angelica Keiskei Koidzumi and the Gynura procumbens. They're both anti-hypertension and anti-diabetes.

Anyway, just posting this info in case anyone's interested. Here are some links I read about both:

    Ashitaba

    Gynura procumbens
    Gynura Procumbens 2

    Source: http://mrsmartinezravesandrants.blogspot.com

Btw, in some other articles it say that both Ashitaba and Gynura procumbens are also anti-cancer plants.

Anyway, these are both interesting plants to know about.
