Liverpool FC this afternoon confirmed that Sotirios Kyrgiakos had left the club and joined Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg.

The Greek defender made 49 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals, after signing from AEK Athens in August 2009.

Seeing red: Despite a good start, Liverpool fans still want changes

A 1-1 draw with Sunderland. A 2-0 win over Arsenal. After two weeks, Liverpool FC has collected four points out of the possible six to feel good about themselves.

And there are good signs.

Under Kenny Dalglish’s managing last season, the Reds avoided relegation and made a late charge to go up in the standings. In the off-season, Dalglish brought in Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Jose Enrique, and Jordan Henderson. A influx of youth and talent that Liverpool needs a dose of.

The four started for LFC against Arsenal and the Merseysiders took their first win at Arsenal in 11 years.

But the two goals came in the second half when there were two key substitutions in the 71st minute. Midfielder Raul Meireles who deserves to start came in for Dirk Kuyt while Luis Suarez replaced Andy Carroll.

Their impact was instantaneous.

Their aggressiveness forced Aaron Ramsey into an own goal and Suarez scored in injury time for the win.

I can understand Dalglish wanted to conserve Suarez’ legs who had a busy summer playing for the Uruguay national team that won a record 15th Copa America title. But Meireles’ not starting is something I need to comprehend. Here is someone who provided a strong presence in the midfield and has become a Kop favorite with Steven Gerrard bogged down with injuries. The Portuguese midfielder who had a strong World Cup in South Africa scored 12 goals in all competitions for Liverpool despite a late season addition as a replacement for Alberto Aquilani.

I am not so sure if playing Arsenal at Emirates was a place to experiment but I do hope that this isn’t a regular occurrence like when Rafael Benitez would not make use of Peter Crouch and other players.

With LFC’s talismanic captain Steven Gerrard battling all sorts of injuries, Meireles has been inspirational such that he was voted Professional Footballers Association Fan’s Player of the Year for 2011 (the second LFC player to win it after Gerrard who has coped the award twice).

Regarding Suarez, if the intention is to utilize him in the manner of AC Milan insertion of Filippo Inzaghi in a match’s late stages where he has made a career out of scoring late goals, then that is good. But Suarez is too talented to come off the bench around the 70th minute. He can create not just for himself but also for teammates.

There is optimism in Anfield that Liverpool will return to the top four and compete for a slot in the Champions League. The youth movement will give Liverpool a shot in the arm just as Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, and Michael Owen did about a decade ago.

It’s been 21 years since Liverpool last won a league title. In that time, they have been overtaken by Manchester United as the preeminent English club. There’s that feeling that it’s time to make that move back to the top.

Hopefully, this is the year.

Valencia agree to sell Mata to Chelsea


MADRID (Reuters) – Valencia have agreed to sell Spain winger Juan Mata to Chelsea, the Spanish club said on Sunday.

“Valencia Football Club have reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the player Juan Manuel Mata,” a club statement read.

“The agreement is subject to the relevant medical tests.”

The 23-year-old, also a target for Chelsea’s faltering rivals Arsenal, has 11 Spain caps and has been mainstay of the Valencia side since 2008 with his speed and goals marking him out as one of Europe’s most exciting widemen.

Chelsea have signed Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu in the transfer window as new coach Andre Villas-Boas looks to shine in the Champions League and snatch back the Premier League title from Manchester United.

Fans often bemoaned Chelsea’s lack of width last season under Carlo Ancelotti.

Valencia, third in La Liga last term, were demanding around 30 million euros (26.2 million pounds) for Mata, according to media reports.

But Meireles’ not starting is something I need to comprehend. Here is someone who provided a strong presence in the midfield and has become a Kop favorite with Steven Gerrard bogged down with injuries.

I understand where the author of this article is coming from. But the fact of the matter is, that Raul has had no pre-season whatsoever due to injury and he's still not match fit. I personally think they're right in easing him back into games, it's great we've got a midweek game with Exeter this week so he could get more playing time and then possibly start at the weekend against Bolton.

With Suarez, Kenny has admitted that he should not have started against Sunderland. Again getting him fully match fit is the priority, he's got 2 goals in 2 games, just imagine what he could do once fully fit

When the fixtures first came out, I thought 4 points from our first 2 games would be great (ok I did think the results would be the other way round ). But I think we've got the makings of a good side here, once we get Suarez and Carroll playing more together, we do have the potential of a truly lethal partnership. I'm quietly optimistic about the season

'Historic' Sebastian Coates transfer a coup for Liverpool

Sebastian Coates has been signed, sealed and delivered to Anfield. For a fee of less than half the price of Phil Jones the Merseysiders have bagged themselves twice the player.

Uruguayan heavyweights Nacional received a fax this morning from Liverpool meeting their £7m valuation of the centre-back. The deal concludes a month of intense transfer speculation surrounding the 2011 Copa America Young Player of the Tournament.

Nacional said all along that it would take an “historic” fee to convince them to part ways with the defender who stands just a few blond locks short of six foot six. The fee certainly smashes the previous Uruguayan record of £3.5m to take Nicolás Lodeiro from Nacional to Ajax but still represents a real coup for Liverpool.

On the downside for Nacional they will receive just over half of the cash after selling a portion of Coates’ rights for £100,000 to a third-party investment group while the player was still a trainee.

Liverpool were not the first club to wade in with a concrete offer for 20-year-old. FC Dnipro actually bid well over the asking price but the player refused a move to the Ukraine.

Manchester City were also sniffing around and even had top Uruguayan businessman Francisco "Paco" Casal doing their bidding for them. Following an injury to Mamadou Sakho it was also reported that Paris Saint-Germain were weighing up a move for El Flaco Coates.

With Coates’ agent Matias Pittini bombarded with a host of enquires from high profile clubs all over Europe credit must be given to Liverpool for stepping up their chase and securing the signature. Just as Luis Suárez convinced Lodeiro to come to Ajax it appears the striker has once again used his significant influence within Uruguay to get Coates to Anfield.

Enough about the off-the-field shenanigans, what exactly has this kid got in his locker? Let’s get the tired clichés out the way now; dominant in the air at both ends of the pitch, tends to stay on his feet but equally adapt at a last gasp lunge, great physicality to usher attackers off the ball, can walk the ball out of defence or ping a long pass off his right boot and he’s definitely not afraid to risk a booking.

Coates joined the Nacional academy at 11-years-old and broke into the first team seven years later. Before making his bow with Nacional the defender helped Uruguay finish third at the 2009 South American under-20 Championships.

Since making his debut for Nacional against Bella Vista on 18 April 2009 the Uruguayan has started every single game for the club, suspensions and national team duty withstanding. Despite only playing three months of the 2008/09 campaign his performances in the title winning team as well as on a run to the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores saw Coates named the 2008/09 Uruguayan Championship Revelation of the Season.

In the close season Coates traveled to Egypt to play at the under-20 World Cup where Uruguay went unbeaten in a group containing eventual champions Ghana. Below Uruguay and Ghana in the group came Uzbekistan and then England.

Although Nacional missed out on the league title the following year Coates’ stock continued to rise. His performance in Buenos Aires against Banfield in the Copa Libertadores was a joy to behold. Coates dictated the play at both ends of the pitch as he scored the opener and set up the second in the 2-0 win over the reigning Argentinian league champions.

Coates then missed out on a trip to South Africa despite being called up to Uruguay’s senior squad for their crucial play-off double header against Costa Rica. The defender would have to wait another year before winning his first cap. His international debut came in a friendly against Estonia just a week shy of the 2011 Copa America.

With injuries dogging both Diego Godín and Mauricio Victorino the door was left ajar for Coates to partner Diego Lugano in the heart of defence at the continental competition. A string of fine displays heralded the arrival of the latest uncompromising Uruguayan centre-back, a fighter for sure and a winner to boot.

Neymar’s name was already etched onto the Young Player of the Tournament award before a ball was even kicked in Argentina, but then Coates kicked Neymar into touch. The achievement may have paled into insignificance against winning Uruguay’s 15th Copa America title but the Young Player award seems now to have tipped the balance for Coates getting a work permit.

There’s been a touch of the Cesc Fabregas and Luka Modric about Coates’ inevitable transfer away from Parque Central but the Nacional youth product remained quiet and respectful throughout. He even answered his manager’s plea to play in the game against Defensor Sporting at the weekend despite still looking jaded following his Copa America exploits.

With this in mind it’s unlikely Kenny Dalglish will want to throw Coates into the fray immediately. Judging by some of Coates’ monstrous performances in el Clásico del fútbol uruguayo against Peñarol the Merseyside Derby seems the right time for Liverpool fans to judge what sort of player they have on their hands.

A week after the Everton game Coates will celebrate his 21st birthday, what a truly fantastic bit of business from the Red Men.

Nacional's Uruguay international defender Sebastian Coates is heading to Liverpool to undergo a medical.

The 20-year-old highly-rated defender has agreed personal terms with the Reds and is due in to complete other formalities.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's director of football Damien Comolli is still trying to negotiate further transfers before the window slams shut.
