    Regrets

    Good afternoon guys,

Just want to share some thoughts. It's been like 6 years since I took the UPCAT. I did not pass my first priority course which was BSBAA but passed the BS Mathematics program at the University of the Philippines Diliman. This is the reason why I did not pursue my education at UP, rather, I took up Accountancy in our province. In addition, I was not yet mature enough to be separated from my family and had that fear inside me. Now, I'm a CPA and was even one of the top in the graduating class.

Just want to get your insights. If you were me 6 years ago, what path would you have taken?

    Thanks and Godbless.

no regrets. whatever decisions you made in the past, it made you what you are right now. Your top of the class..be glad. The most important thing is what are you going to do now for your future. You can excel even if you didnt go to UP. You need to have confidence and the determination specially when you enter the work force.

If I were in your shoes, I would have gone to UP.

Pero you have already made your own choice and, yes, you should not have any regrets. Hindi lang naman UP ang ticket to success and it looks like you're doing well, so chin up and good luck with your future endeavors.

^right. I was really very confident pagka graduate ng diliman. pero nung nasa "real" world na ako I realize na hindi lahat ng matatalino and magagaling nasa UP. and also hindi lahat ng graduate ng diliman matalino. yung iba masipag and maswerte and maganda lang. ehem

baka galing ibang school tapos transfer lang UP D sinasabi mo haha

    "Diliman and Proud"

  11. #11
No regrets.

It's good that you followed your heart. But knowing that with good grades, possible mag-transfer ng courses and campuses, I would have asked the department concerned kung ano ang requirements nila for transfer with the intention of transferring pag pwede na. I would have taken that BS Math slot. Yung subjects naman sa first year ay basic courses. My cousin enrolled in Biology just because gusto ng tatay nya. Pero in the end, he was miserable sa course nya. He mustered enough guts and shifted sa course na gusto nya. He is now very successful sa field nya. So kung gustong gusto mo sanang makapasok sa UP, I would have advised you na tiis muna ng one year sa BS Math then try to switch. I f you fail to make it, then that's the time to go back to your province to take up the course that you really wanted. Make-credit naman siguro yung basic subjects mo sa UP.

Regretted it... probably my stay in UP is the worst 6 years in my life. Siguro din hindi pa ako handa mawalay sa parents ko that time, umiyak ako nun un kong stay sa UP... at madalas ako umiyak for many years there. Parang Jurassic Park ang UP, pag di ka kagad naka-adapt, you're dead.

Ang problema ko ngayon eh dapat ma-honorable dismissal ako para ma-credit naman kahit GE lang sa bagong school (w/c is another thing, kelangan ko pa pagipunan kasi may kamahalan, pero now I'd do anything for my dream course... w/c is not available in UP :P)

    To the TS,

Knowing that your career has flourished despite not pursuing UP, I think it is an accomplishment on it's own.

But in the long run, if you're a career-driven person, it would have been nice if you did enter UP and got a diploma from it.

First of all, the people that you could have met and befriended in UP would be a vital part in this career you're building. In short, connections. These "could-have-been" friends are potential future industry leaders, politicians, scientists, academic "gods" and what-not, who knows, really? And it wouldn't hurt you to have known some of them. Who knew that an architect like Shamcey would be a Ms. Universe winner, 3rd runner-up I know but at least, right? Who knew that then Mathematics major Raul Sunico would be this world-class pianist, having studied in Juilliard School in NY. I'm not saying that you could only meet these types of people in UP, I'm saying that the potential is there, the opportunity was there and you missed it.

Secondly, the experience you would have gotten from staying in UP is an education uniquely UP, this is something that only UP can offer. You don't want to step out of highschool and enter a "gated" college, no! This gates shield the students from what is happening out here. This gates falsely function as security, but in reality these renders students blind to what is actually real. These makes them passive. Most of the other students out there just wants to enter college, fcuk around (literally) then graduate. They don't want to initiate; they don't want to participate. What makes UP unique is that, after all the experiences you've gone through (the good and the bad ones) and then graduate, you belong. You belong not just in the UP community (yes! UP is a community, not just a university), you belong to the country.

Finally, being called an "Iskolar ng Bayan", how cool is that?! Frankly speaking, for my tuition fees my parents spent approximately P50,000 for my whole 4-year stay in UP. Later, this allowed me to enter med school, in a different university though. Come to think of it, I wouldn't have been a doctor right now if I had gone to a private university for my pre-med.

But I know you've already moved past this, and are happy. That's what's important. I feel sorry for you for not going to UP, but you shouldn't feel sorry for yourself.

    From Letters to Juliet:

"What" and "If" ... are two words as non-threatening as words can be. But put them together side-by-side and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life: What if? What if? What if?"

    ---------------

"Destiny is not the path given to us, but the path we chose to take".

I think the point here is that, UP is not for everybody. Then again, when you think about it, UP is just a reflection of the world out there in so many ways.

My biggest takeaway from my years in UP was all about consciousness. Kamalayan.

As to the TS' question, I honestly did not consider life without UP when I was younger. In a way, it was foolish. But, like so many people here have pointed out, that's water under the bridge.

I should have taken architecture. :'(
