Many fans were disappointed when it was officially announced that Erich Gonzales was chosen to be the leading lady of Asian heartthrob Mario Maurer for the film Suddenly It’s Magic under Star Cinema. Based on Internet forums, fans of Kim Chiu and Sarah Geronimo wanted their respective idols to be paired with Mario instead.

But despite the controversy, Erich maintained that she has no hard feelings about the negative publicity about her. “Hindi na po ako magpapaapekto sa mga ganyan kasi alam ko part ‘yan ng pinasok ko. Basta nagfo-focus ako sa mga blessings na dumarating sa akin, kaya wala akong sama ng loob kahit kanino. Masaya lang ako dahil napakalaking project ito for me. It’s a blessing, so I’m really excited,” she said in an interview at the press con of Maria La del Barrio last November 10.

When asked about the first time she met Mario, Erich shared that they enjoyed talking over dinner because she had the opportunity to work with some of his friends back in Thailand. “I’ve met his friend dahil madalas ako mag-shoot dun for a commercial. Yung mga nakatrabaho niya, nakatrabaho ko din. Yung close friend niya nakilala ko doon. So maganda dahil umpisa pa lang may konting bonding na.”

She also liked the fact that Mario easily opened up about himself. “He's a nice guy, napaka-sincere and napaka-genuine niya. Alam kong magiging masaya ang shooting namin. Sabi niya mahilig siya sa skateboarding, sa cars, natutuwa siya sa mga sasakyan dito... Ang galing kasi at least kapag nag-work na kami, hindi na kami magkakailangan sa eksena.”

Is she pressured knowing that people expect a lot from her team-up with Mario? “Basta alam ko na napakalaking project ito kaya gusto ko lang magawa ng maayos yung trabaho ko. Lagi naman may pressure sa kahit ano. Basta alam mo lang dapat kung paano i-handle yun. Ang importante, pag-aralan at pagbutihan mo yung character na gagampanan mo.”

Erich maintains that she and Enchong are just friends
MANILA, Philippines – Despite the evident success of her onscreen tandem with Enchong Dee, actress Erich Gonzales deems that they need not be a real-life item in order to be effective actors.

"Hindi naman po kailangan na maging kami,” was what the “Maria la del Barrio” star told PEP in an article posted on Nov. 13.

She explained that despite not being a couple, they have been warmly received by their fans.

"Kasi po ‘yung mga supporters namin, sinusuportahan ‘yung love team namin, kahit alam nila na hindi kami o wala kaming relasyon sa tunay na buhay o may individual partners kami.

"Kahit hindi kami in real life, more important is ‘yung suporta nila sa amin, na susuklian namin ‘yung kabutihan nila to make them happy,’ said Gonzales.

She highlighted that, "Ang sa amin po ni Enchong trabaho lang talaga."

Even though she claimed that she and Dee are just friends, Gonzales revealed that she’s ready to fall in love and it need not be with someone in the industry.

"I'm ready to fall in love, pero it doesn't mean naman na kailangang magmadali, ine-enjoy ko naman po ang buhay ko.

"May napupusuan na po ako o may nanliligaw pero non-showbiz. Kung sino po iyon, ‘wag na lang po kasi hindi naman po siya showbiz," she shared.

Meanwhile, Gonzales seemed a bit confused when asked about a web report on fashionpulis.com that purportedly referred to her being seen strolling in a mall with model-actor Mikael Daez.

"Sino ‘yun? Sorry..." was her reply when asked if she was the one seen holding hands with Daez while going up the escalator.

"Hindi ko pa siya nami-meet in person. Hindi ko siya talaga kilala," the 21-year-old actress adamantly stated.

In other news, contrary to what Dee said in a previous Bulletin Entertainment that “I think it’s about time naman na parang we’ll go on our separate ways,” referring to their onscreen partnership, Gonzales believes that flying solo won’t be an easy road to take.

"Hindi ganoon kadaling umalis sa love team namin. Hindi ganoon basta-basta [kadali] bumitaw sa kung anuman ang nabuo namin.

"Kasi ayaw kong makasakit sa fans namin.

"Isa sa dahilan kung bakit kami nandito, dahil sa kanila at gusto kong suklian iyon. They're also very supportive naman sa individual projects namin," shared the “I Do” star.

As leading lady of Thai heartthrob Mario Maurer in the upcoming film, “Suddenly It’s Magic,” Gonzales addressed the controversy that several fans were disappointed upon her selection to play a part opposite the former.

A reel romance doesn’t have to turn into a real-life romance.

This is what love team Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales maintain despite the success and positive feedback their team-up in ABS-CBN’s “Maria La Del Barrio” is getting.

The lead characters of the television series won many followers because of their chemistry on screen. But even if most love teams end up being together, Enchong and Erich don’t see themselves following the same path.

“Siguro naging kultura na sa mga teleserye ng mga Pilipino na kapag love team kayo, automatic na magiging kayo or magkakaroon kayo ng relasyon,” Enchong said at the press conference of “Maria La Del Barrio” last November 10.

Strictly professional

They just want to maintain their friendship and keep their team-up strictly on a professional level. Enchong shared that they work well as a team even though they’re not a couple in real life.

“Kahit na we’re two entities na magkahiwalay, but together, so powerful ‘yung tandem but at the same time, we can be apart. So meron kaming kanya-kanyang paths na tini-take, but when we’re together, we work as a team. We work as professionals,” he added.

Enchong and Erich have their respective love life. Enchong has admitted his feelings toward Julia Montes, although he is still waiting for the right time to court her. Erich, on the other hand, admitted a non-showbiz guy is courting her.

They are thankful to fans who support their team-up even though they’re not a real-life couple as what most fans expect them to be. Erich said she and Enchong will always try to make their fans happy through their projects.

“Sinusuportahan pa rin po kami ng mga fans namin yung love team namin and yung individual projects naming kahit na hindi kami together in real life. Hangga’t sa gusto po nila kami, susuklian po namin yun to make them happy. Hangga’t gusto po nila kami together, andito po kami,” she said.

Enchong told the press their friendship also contributes to their chemistry.

“From the start po talaga, whatever it is sa aming dalawa, it’s really friendship. And yung love, secondary or not even tertiary for us,” he said.

Erich will start doing the movie “Suddenly It’s Magic” with Thai actor Mario Maurer in April 2012.

“Tuloy na tuloy yung movie nila at isa ako sa talagang susuporta. Isang magandang move yun para sa kanya para makita yung something else na big,” Enchong relates.

No good-byes

Although they’re doing well individually, Erich and Enchong promise they won’t just leave their team. Erich knows it was their love team that has made them successful as individual artists.

“Hindi ganun kadali na magmove out sa love team na nabuo namin kase ayaw kong maging en grata sa mga fans namin. Sila kase yung dahilan kung bakit kami andito. They’re very supportive sa mga individual projects naming and gusto kong gantihan yung kabutihan nila,” she said.

Enchong, on the other hand, said that even if they might eventually have a ‘break’ in their love team, they will always love working as a pair.

“Siguro yung term na umalis, siguro mas perfect word is break apart kasi syempre, you also want to see yourself growing. Yung love team namin will always be there and will always come back no matter what,” Enchong said.

“Maria La Del Barrio” is extended until February 2012 and airs weekdays after “Reputasyon.” Erich and Enchong said a new character will appear and more twists will unravel in the primetime drama series.

“Dahil sa success ng Maria La Del Barrio, extended po kami dahil sa efforts ng buong staff and cast” revealed Erich.

Tungkol saan ba ang pelikula ninyo ni Mario Maurer, ang Suddenly It's Magic?
"It's about two people, suffering from their past relationships. [They] fall in love na hindi nila ine-expect at yung love na yun ang magiging hadlang sa pangarap nila. Parang nagiging hindrance yung love na yun to pursue their dreams. Parang anong pipiliin mo: yung pangarap mo or yung taong mahal mo."

Ano ang initial reaction mo nung nalaman mo na ikaw yung makakapareha ni Mario sa paggawa nya ng pelikula rito sa Pilipinas?
"Masaya ako dahil napakalaking project nito, it's a big blessing for me, masaya at excited po ako."

Na meet mo na ba personally si Mario? At ano yung mga pinagusapan nyo?
"Yes po! Napa napag-usapan po naming yung istorya nung aming movie, kasama namin si Direk Rory Quintos na siyang magdidirek ng movie namin ni Mario.

Nasabi niya [Mario] rin sa akin na mahilig siya sa wakeboarding, hiphop, ganyan. Mga cars, natutuwa siya sa mga sasakyang nakikita niya rito sa Pilipinas. Parang getting to know each other na rin para pag nag start na yung shooting namin, hindi na kami naiilang sa isa't isa. Para pag may pinagawa sa aming eksena, magagawa namin iyon nang walang ilangan."

How would you describe Mario nung na meet mo siya personally?
"He's a very nice guy!"

Kailan daw magsimula yung shooting n'yo ni Mario?
" Most probably April or May of next year daw po magsimula yung shooting namin."

Anong masasabi mo sa mga intriga na nagtatanong kung bakit ikaw ang napili para makapareha ni Mario?
"Basta po ako, yung mga intrigang ganyan di na rin ako nagpapaapekto, kasi alam ko na part yan nang pinasok ko. Basta nagfo focus lang po ako sa mga blessings na dumarating sa akin at wala akong sama ng loob kahit kanino, dapat masaya lang.

Paano ang preparation mo sa ganito kalaking project with Mario?
"Next year, may mga lessons akong pag-aaralan, isa sa mga lessons siguro yung Thai language, magsu shoot kami rito sa Philippines saka sa Thailand."

Erich, may pressure ba sayo na gagawa ka ng ganito kalaking projects na kasama mo si Mario?
"Lagi namang may pressure sa kahit na anong projects na ginagawa ko basta alam mo lang harapin yun. Ang importante gawin mo lang yung trabaho mo nang maayos."

Paano mo ino overcome yung mga pressure na yun?
"Ako po, basta pinag-aaralan ko lang yung story then yung character na gagampanan mo, pagbutihan mo dapat."

Ayon kay Erich Gonzales, excited na siya sa pelikulang pagsasamahan nila ng Thai superstar na si Mario Maurer. Pero aniya ay sa April or May next year pa raw sila magsisimulang mag-shoot at sa Thailand at dito daw sa ’Pinas kukunan ang movie.

Nang tanungin ang leading man ni Erich sa Maria la del Barrio na si Enchong Dee kung hindi ba siya nate-threaten sa presence ni Mario sa buhay ni Erich, aniya ay hindi naman daw at natutuwa pa raw siya para sa ka-loveteam,

“Kumbaga, sabi ko nga, if tuloy na tuloy na ang movie, I’ll be the one na susuporta sa kanila kasi isang magandang move ’yun para sa kanya (Erich) na talagang she’s doing something big, ’di ba?” say ni Enchong.

When asked kung totoo bang a-appear siya in a cameo role sa pelikula nina Erich at Mario, aniya ay wala pa naman daw nababanggit sa kanya.

“Kung meron, willing naman ako.”

Okay din daw sa kanya kahit isama pa siya sa main cast pero may kundisyon lang siya.

“Okay lang ako, basta huwag lang kambal (ang role) kasi, magkamukha na kami tapos kambal pa ang role namin,” natatawa niyang pagbibiro.

Dagdag pa niya, “sige, tingnan natin ang role. Kasi honor din naman na makasama ko siya kasi international star siya.”

Erich Gonzales doesn’t want to be affected by some observations questioning her choice as leading lady in the ambitious Star Cinema movie titled Suddenly It’s Magic which would star popular Thai actor-model Mario Maurer of Love of Siam and Little Thing Called Love fame.

“Instead of wasting my time and energy on negative things such as that, I just count my blessings and focus on my craft,” she says. “I know that harsh criticisms or comments are part and parcel of the ‘biz so I stay cool. There’s no finer substitute to just being positive despite some hurdles!”

Doing Suddenly It’s Magic is simply Erich’s biggest screen project to date.

“I know and it thrills me to-the-max! We’ll start shooting summer of next year. This will be directed by Rory Quinto and will center on the theme: which would you choose between true love and pursuing your cherished dream in life? It has an interesting story line and for sure, many incurable romantics can relate to it.”

The Maria La Del Barrio star reveals she was tongue-tied when she first learned that she’s cast as Mario’s partner in the movie.

“I couldn’t believe it! It’s a grand project opposite one of Asia’s most popular screen heartthrobs. I felt, ‘Wow!’ This is one rare chance and it’s definitely a big honor and privilege to work with Mario,” Erich avers.

According to the charming lass, pressure is inevitable.

“Yes, I’m under pressure with all the expectations, comments, etc. But I know that with the proper mindset and attitude, everything will turn out fine. We have a good story and an excellent director so we’ll be off to a good start!”

Erich has already met Mario personally.

“That’s right! He’s a very nice guy. He went here for the story conference of Suddenly It’s Magic. Direk Rory and I were there and he proved to be warm.

“The meeting also served as an ice breaker for the two of us. I got to know a lot of interesting things about him like he’s gaga over wakeboarding and hip hop music. He also loves cars. It’s good so that when shooting officially starts next year, there will be no awkwardness between us anymore!”

Language is one concern she’ll address before shooting commences.

“Yes! I have to learn Thai because we’ll shoot both in the Philippines and Thailand. I know it’s not easy but on the other hand, interesting and exciting. Learning a new language and flying to a foreign land whose history and culture are rich are simply irresistible perks. I’m really proud and lucky to be doing this film,” states Erich.

MAY MGA TAONG nakakakilig panoorin na magkasama onscreen because they look good together and they have great chemistry. Hindi naman talaga kailangan na magkaroon ng relasyon sa totoong buhay ang magka-loveteam para maging patok sa mga fans. Pero hindi mo rin siyempre maiaaalis sa mga fans na mangarap at umasa na sana ay magkatuluyan in real life ang kanilang mga iniidolo. Pero bakit mukhang hindi lume-level-up ang kanilang relasyon at hanggang ngayon ay friends pa rin sila? Erich thankful for fruitful year

MANILA, Philippines — The year 2011 has been a bountiful year for ABS-CBN artist Erich Gonzales. She has been blessed with a lot of projects, among them the Pinoy adaptation of the well-loved Spanish telenovela “Maria la del Barrio.” The teleserye pairs Erich with Enchong Dee.

Another milestone in Erich’s acting career this year is her forthcoming movie “Suddenly It’s Magic” where she is teamed up with Thai superstar Mario Maurer, who came over recently to meet her and the others involved in the movie. (Mario was also special guest during the official launch in the Philippines of Bonchon Chicken.)

Aside from her blossoming acting career, Erich is also a sought-after product endorser. Her latest endorsement project is for Sisters Sanitary Napkins and Pantyliners. Executives of Mega Soft Hygienic Products, maker of Sisters Sanitary Napkins, said they saw in Erich the qualities that would earn them good public perception and acceptance.
