The Road to Brazil: 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying

our country's road may have ended but all roads around the world lead to Brazil 2014

    http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/prelimi...voiceofthesite

Eighty-one years to the day since Uruguay became the first team to win the Jules Rimet Trophy on home soil in Montevideo, world football’s biggest prize was in the limelight once more and if FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, in his introductory speech, described football as Brazil’s “beating heart”, there were pulses accelerating inside the Marina da Gloria and far beyond as the draw unfolded.

Some of the greats of Brazilian football helped FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke in conducting the draw – including Bebeto, Cafu, Ronaldo, Mario Zagallo and Zico – and it threw up some intriguing contests, not least in the European Zone where holders Spain were drawn against France, winners in 1998, in Group I. These rivals last met in the second round of the 2006 finals in Germany where France won 3-1 en route to the final. The third seeds in Group I are Belarus who have taken four points off France in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying.

Four-times winners Italy will face Denmark in Group B, Germany, the most successful team in qualifying history, must tackle Sweden in Group C, while England – 55 years to the day of their 1966 FIFA World Cup triumph – were pitted against Ukraine and Poland, the co-hosts of next year’s UEFA European Championship, as well as a Montenegro side they are currently competing against for a place at the European finals.

In the African Zone, a Côte d’Ivoire side who were present at Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010 will face Morocco – four-time finalists and the first African side to win a World Cup match – in Group C of qualifying Round Two. As for Ghana, quarter-finalists in South Africa, they will count Zambia as their most formidable rival in Group D.

Zico, the one-time coach of Japan, helped make the draw for Round Three of the Asian qualifying competition and his old team must pit their wits against Korea DPR in Group B – a potentially daunting section given these were two of the region’s four South Africa 2010 representatives and they must also face Uzbekistan. In Group D, an Australia side chasing a third successive finals appearance will face Saudi Arabia.

In the CONCACAF Zone, Mexico will face a Costa Rica team led by their former coach Ricardo La Volpe in Group B of preliminary Round Three. The duo could also find themselves up against 2006 finalists Trinidad and Tobago should they prevail in Round Two Group B. USA’s opponents in their section will include the Reggae Boyz of Jamaica.

In Oceania, New Zealand – who went home from South Africa 2010 as the only unbeaten team – may not have it all their own way in Group B where they find themselves up against a traditionally strong Fiji side, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Should New Zealand prevail in Oceania qualifying they would face CONCACAF opposition in the Intercontinental play-offs while teams from Asia and South America would contest the other play-off. The South American group is as always save for the absence of Brazil, who qualifying automatically.

A record 203 teams will be competing in the preliminary competition for Brazil 2014 – a number that will be whittled down to the 31 who will join the hosts for the 20th FIFA World Cup finals which kick off on Thursday 12 June 2014.

Maganda ang Group A sa Third Round ng AFC, wala sa team na yun ang nakaabot last 2010. The best group being Group C which includes Japan, North Korea, Uzbekistan, and Syria.

  3. #3
In 3 SEA countries, Thailand is with Australia, Saudi Arabia and Oman with only top 2 will go to next round. Mas mahirap Indonesia with 3 strong middle east opponents. Singapore is competitive with Jordan and Iraq and 50-50 chance to be top 2

  4. #4
    Japan handed awkward assignment

    The standout section
Reigning Asian champions Japan might have their work cut out in a tough-looking Group C that pits them against fellow South Africa 2010 finalists Korea DPR and also contains Uzbekistan and Syria. Despite being placed in Pot 4 along with the continent’s relatively weaker sides, Korea DPR are a definite threat as they proved in reaching the last FIFA World Cup™. Japan will hope to repeat their victories over the North Koreans when they crossed swords in the third round of Germany 2006 qualifying, with Masashi Oguro scoring late goals for the Samurai Blue on both occasions. For their part, Uzbekistan will want to improve on disappointing results against Japan – a draw and a defeat – when they finished bottom of the final qualifying group for South Africa 2010. For all the focus on that aforementioned trio, no-one should underestimate Syria, who have established themselves as potential giant-killers down the years.

    The favourites
Although Korea Republic will have to endure long-distance trips to the Middle East to face Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, the Taeguk Warriors look well placed to advance from Group B. Australia and Saudi Arabia, runners-up at the past two editions of the AFC Asian Cup respectively, will be expected to contest pole position in Group D, while Iran and China PR will want to push for eagerly-awaited returns to the finals from their sections.

    The outsiders
After the west Asian teams missed out on qualifying for South Africa 2010, the qualifying competition for Brazil 2014 offers the chance to redeem themselves. Iraq, the 2007 Asian champions, and the United Arab Emirates are the forces to be reckoned with this time, while Bahrain will want to put recent near-misses behind them.

    The crunch matches
Japan-Korea DPR: These north- eastern rivals will renew their acquaintance after their thrilling encounters in 2005. Japan defeated Korea DPR 2-1 thanks to an Oguro goal deep into added time at home in Saitama, before defeating the Chollima 2-0 at a neutral venue in Bangkok, Thailand. This time around, a contingent of Japanese-born North Koreans, such as An Yong- Hak and Jong Tae-Se, will add spice to the tremendous rivalry.

Australia-Saudi Arabia: There will be little margin for error when Australia and Saudi Arabia, the two Group D powers, face each other for the first time at this stage. The teams have met three times with the records evenly poised at one win, one draw and one loss for both sides.

    The stat
90 – combined number of goals scored by the all-time top three scorers in FIFA World Cup qualifying, who are all from Asia – Iranian legends Ali Daei and Karim Bagheri netted 35 and 28 goals respectively, while Kazu Miura struck 27 for Japan.

    The next step
The group winners and runners- up will reach the fourth round, where the ten teams will be drawn into two round-robin, home-and-away groups of five teams each. The top two from each section will qualify for the finals, while the third-placed teams will play off to decide who will face a South American team in the continental play-off.

    Have your say
Will the east Asian teams continue their recent dominance in FIFA World Cup qualifying, or will the west Asians have the last laugh?

The qualifying process for the 2014 World Cup began on June 15, 2011 when minnows Montserrat hosted Belize in Couva in the CONCACAF region.

A goal from Deon McCauley of Raymond Gentle-City Boys United in the 24th minute was the first in qualifying - and he went on to net a hat-trick too. But Belize's joy was to be shortlived as, two days later, they were suspended from international competition due to government interference. The suspension was eventually lifted.

    EUROPE: 13 places

Qualifying for 2014 follows exactly the same format as 2010. There will be eight groups of six teams and one group of five.

Each group winner qualifies automatically, with the eight best runners-up facing a play-off to qualify. The record of the team finishing in sixth place in groups 1-8 will be discounted to determine the best runners-up.

The qualifiers begin in September 2012 and run through to October 2013.

    SOUTH AMERICA: 4.5 places

Brazil qualify automatically as hosts, which means only nine nations will take part. As in recent qualifying competitions, all teams play each other home and away with the top four nations making it to the finals. The fifth-placed team will have to play an inter-continental play-off.

The qualifiers begin in October 2011 and run through to September 2013.

    CONCACAF: 3.5 places

CONCACAF has a slightly modified, but still convoluted, system for 2014. The main seeds, including USA and Mexico, enter in Round Three.

Round One: Ties completed by July 17. Ten bottom ranked nations playing two-legged ties.
Round Two: 24 teams drawn into six groups of four teams. Played September 2 to November 15, 2011. Group winners advance to the Round Three.
Round Three: 12 teams drawn into three groups of four teams. Played June 8 to October 16, 2012. Top two teams advance to Round Four.
Round Four: One group of six teams. Played from February 6 to October 15, 2013. Top three teams qualify. Fourth placed team makes the intercontinental play-off.

    AFRICA 5 places

A much-changed system in Africa, with the final round essentially taking the format of five play-off ties.

Round One: 12 home-and-away series. Played in the period November 11-15, 2011.
Round Two: Ten groups of four teams. Played June 1, 2012 to September 10, 2013. The group winners advance to Round Three.
Round Three: Five two-legged ties. Played October 11-15 and November 15-19, 2013. Winners qualify for the finals.

    ASIA 4.5 places

This follows the same format as for 2010.

Round One: Eight two-legged ties featuring the 16 lowest-ranked teams in Asia.
Round Two: 15 two-legged ties played on July 23-28, 2011. Winners advance to Round Three.
Round Three: 20 teams will be drawn into five groups of four teams. Played September 2, 2011 to February 29, 2012. Group winners and runners-up advance to Round Four.
Round Four: Two groups of five teams. Played June 3, 2012 to June 18, 2013. Group winners and runners-up qualify.
Round Five: The teams finishing third in Round Four face a home-and-away play-off. The winner advances to the intercontinental play-off.

    OCEANIA 0.5 places

    A slightly modified qualifying competition.

Round One: The four lowest ranked teams will play in a central tournament based on a league system between November 21-26, 2011; the proposed venue is Samoa. The winner of the tournament will advance to Round Two.
Round Two: Also the 2012 OFC Nations Cup, the Group Stage of this competition will act as World Cup qualifying for Oceania. The winner of Round One joins the seven top ranked nations in the region in a central tournament based on a league system, likely to be in Fiji, with a semi-final and final. The four semi-finalists will go through.
Round Three: One four-team group playing on a home and away basis between September 7, 2012 and March 26, 2013. The winner of this group goes through to intercontinental play-off.

The pairings of the intercontinental play-offs have yet to be decided.

Only top 2 on the groups will qualify for the next round and only 4 from UEFA will ear a trip to Brazil

Hope the dutch will change strategy on their game as what happen to EURO championships

Swerte ng England pinaka mahina na group, so kahit ipasok pa nila si Rooney ok lang, talagang scapegoat yan. Mas ok ang line-up nila last EURO minus Rooney

Group of death ang Group B, tatlo magaling dyan pero dalawa lang kailangan
