Italian players explain potential Serie A strike

The Italian Players Association admit they could go on strike before the start of the Serie A season.

Yesterday the captains of all 20 clubs signed an open letter threatening to postpone the opening weekend of the season if the Lega Serie A didn’t complete the collective bargaining contract.

“It’s not right that every time the option of a strike emerges we are met by the usual clichés about rich players,” complained AIC President Tommasi.

“We are not talking about money in this situation, but just about the rights of each player to train with his team.

“The Presidents first gave a positive response to the proposal, then refused to sign the contract.”

Serie A strike near after league rejects contract

ROME (AP) -- The Italian league voted against adopting a collective contract signed by the players on Wednesday, raising the possibility of a Serie A strike.
The league voted 18-2 against the contract, standing firm in its desire to make two changes.
The clubs want to allow coaches to force unwanted players to train away from the first team. They also want players to pay a new solidarity tax that applies to high earners.
"The text signed by the players' association can't be signed if those two points are not integrated," Serie A president Maurizio Beretta said.
The players announced this month that they will strike if a new collective contract is not signed before the season opens. The conflict between the players and the league has been ongoing since the last collective contract expired in June 2010.
Cagliari and Siena were the two clubs that voted in favor of the contract.
After the vote, the Italian soccer federation delayed a meeting from Wednesday to Thursday.
"At the moment the conditions are not right to play," players' association president Damiano Tommasi said, according to the ANSA news agency. "The league's requests are (being used as an excuse). The federation meeting was postponed but I don't see what could change."
Meanwhile, coaches' association president Renzo Ulivieri chained himself to the gates of the soccer federation to protest a move allowing lower-level clubs to hire unlicensed coaches.
The players set two strike dates during the first half of last season, both of which were avoided with last-minute verbal agreements.
Serie A is expected to start on Saturday with Fiorentina at Siena in a Tuscan derby and defending champion AC Milan at Cagliari. On Sunday, it's: Napoli vs. Genoa; Atalanta vs. Cesena; Bologna vs. Roma; Inter Milan vs. Lecce; Lazio vs. Chievo Verona; Novara vs. Palermo; Parma vs. Catania; and Udinese vs. Juventus.
A strike by Spanish club players has already wiped out the opening weekend of the Liga.
While there have been numerous other threats over the years, the only time Serie A players went on strike was in March 1996. Among the issues then was the Bosman ruling, which established the right of players to switch clubs freely once their contracts expired, and said strict limits on foreigners were illegal.

Start of Serie A season postponed after strike confirmed

ROME, Aug 26 (Reuters) - The start of the Serie A season this weekend was postponed on Friday after the Italian Players' Union (AIC) called a strike after failing to reach agreement with clubs over a new deal over players' rights.

The Lega Serie A, representing Italy's 20 top flight clubs, refused to agree to a last-minute proposal from the AIC to sign a one-season deal to avert strike action, prompting the postponement of Saturday and Sunday's fixtures.

Serie A players' strike to be called off with AIC on the verge of signing agreement

The AIC have stated that the collective contract will be finalised on Monday in time for Serie A to resume in time for the second round of fixtures

The Italian Players' Association (AIC) have confirmed that the collective bargaining contract will be signed on Monday, calling off the strike in time for Serie A fixtures next weekend.

Serie A was due to kick off last week, but the opening round of games was postponed when the AIC called a strike in protest at the refusal of the union of clubs (LEGA) to sign the collective bargaining contract.

A source for the AIC, has claimed that the contract is on the verge of being signed early next week in time for the second round of Serie A games.

"The contract will be signed either late morning or early afternoon on Monday September 5. The only things missing are small technical details," an AIC source told the Ansa news agency.

"We only need to review a few things tied to the regulations and our lawyers are working on finalising everything."

The agreement will mean the first fixture of the 2011-12 Serie A campaign will be Milan versus Lazio on Friday evening.

Inter down 3-1 against Novora. It's the first time I've heard of them.

Sack Gasperini. That's all there is to it. At this point, Novara is definitely a minnow against Inter.

  16. #35
After sacking Gasperini, they should also plan to get rid of their old defensive players along with Milito.
