Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank and Bisperas big winners at the 7th Cinemalaya Awards Night

Text by Erwin Santiago /Report by Jocelyn Dimaculangan

The 7th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival culminated its very successful run by handing out trophies at the awards night held earlier tonight, July 24, at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank, which pokes fun at indie filmmaking, was the night's biggest winner; picking up five Balanghay trophies—Best Film, Best Director (Marlon Rivera), Best Screenplay (Chris Martinez), Audience Choice Award, and Best Actress (Eugene Domingo).

Eugene is a favorite to win the Best Actress trophy.

"Kung hindi pa ako nakakain ng tae, hindi pa ako mananalo!" exclaimed the comedienne at the beginning of her acceptance speech, which she also delivered in English for international guests. In the film, Eugene was literally submerged into a septic tank.

Aside from thanking her co-stars in the movie, Eugene also acknowledged the members of Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) who were also part of the cast.

She also addressed the controversy at the beginning of the Cinemalaya where short-film director Rafa Santos was criticized for his remarks against theater actors (who would reportedly work for "Sky Flakes" and "catfood").

"Rafa... we forgive you. We are all united here," said Eugene to the young filmmaker who also attended the event.

Young actor Edgar Allan Guzman, on the other hand, was named Best Actor for his role in the sex-comedy Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me.

Edgar Allan, who was under the weather, thanked his "love team" in the film, Mercedes Cabral, his girlfriend Johlan Veluz, his mother, and his manager Noel Ferrer.

Meanwhile, Niño, directed by Loy Arcenas, picked up four trophies in the New Breed category, including Special Jury Prize, Best Supporting Actress (Shamaine Buencamino), Best Supporting Actor (Art Acuna), and Best Production Design.

In the Directors' Showcase category, Jeffrey Jeturain's Bisperas picked up five awards, including Best Film, Best Actress for Raquel Villavicencio and Best Supporting Actress for Julia Clarete.

Aureaus Solito won Best Director for Busong, which was first exhibited at the Cannes International Film Festival earlier this year.

Bembol Roco was adjudged Best Actor for Isda while Jaime Pebangco was named Best Supporting Actor for Patikul.

The jury decided not to give trophies for Best Feature and Best Screenplay this year in the Directors' Showcase category.

In the Short Feature Film category, Walang Katapusang Kuwarto won Best Film and Best Screenplay for Emerson Reyes, who also directed the film.

Rommel Tolentino was named Best Director for Niño Bonito, while Hanap Buhay got the Special Jury Prize.

The 7th Cinemalaya Awards Night was hosted by Paolo Bediones and Angel Aquino.

    November 18, 2011, 3:22pm

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino films “Boundary” and “Siglo ng Pagluluwal (Century of Birthing)” were among the winners of the 13th Cinemanila International Film Festival’s international competition sections.

“Boundary,” directed by Benito Bautista, shared the Special Mention honor with Indonesian film “The Mirror Never Lies” by Kamila Andini under the SEA (Southeast Asia) Films in Competition section. The Best SEA Film award went to “Golden Slumbers” by Davy Chou of Cambodia.

On the other hand, the six-hour long Lav Diaz-helmed film “Siglo ng Pagluluwal” won the Grand Jury Prize under the Main Competition section. The Lino Brocka Grand Prize was given to “Gangor” by Italo Spinelli of Italy. Individuals were also recognized, namely, Best Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan for “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia” from Turkey; Best Actor George Pistereanu for “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” from Romania; and Best Actress Jeong-hie Yun for “Poetry” of South Korea.

The Cinemanila also had competition sections dedicated solely to Filipino films, Young Cinema Shorts and Digital Lokal. Carlo Obispo’s “123” won both the Best Short Film award and the Ishmael Bernal Award for Young Cinema. Meanwhile, Victor Villanueva’s “Saranghae My Tutor” received the Special Jury Prize.

The Digital Lokal Best Film and Best Director awards were given to Mes de Guzman’s “Sa Kanto ng Ulap at Lupa, while “Sakay sa Hangin” by Regiben Romana won the Lino Brocka Grand Jury Prize.

    Cinemanila no longer a ‘gypsy’

From this year, the Cinemanila will be held in its permanent home, Taguig City. Prior to the awards ceremony held on Nov. 17 at the Bonifacio High Street, festival director Tikoy Aguiluz and Taguig City Mayor Lina Cayetano shared to Bulletin Entertainment and select members of the media their plans for the future installments of the festival.

To sustain the festival off season and to create awareness for film appreciation as well as boost audience turn-out, Cinemanila intends to hold monthly projects such as workshops and discussion-seminars, and to bring the indie films to the masses through the Sine Barangay.

Aguiluz related that there are also “concrete plans” to build a cinematheque and new cinemas inside the Global City, particularly in Serendra and the Bonifacio High Street. This is in line with their vision of turning Taguig City into a “haven for filmmakers.”

More, Cayetano and the city government of Taguig plan to give incentives to filmmakers who would shoot their entire films in the city. To start, Aguiluz announced the joint community film project by the Cinemanila and Taguig City which will be screened at next year’s festival.

Veteran horror movie extra Lilia Cuntapay wins big in Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival 2011 awards
    Mark Angelo Ching
    Tuesday, November 15, 2011 @ 10:42PM

    Big Boy,

    Cartas de Soledad,

    Di Ingon Nato,

    Ka Oryang,

    Mga Anino sa Tanghaling Tapat,

    My Paranormal Romance,

Sa Kanto ng Ulap at Lupa,

    Sa Ilalim ng Tulay,

at Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay.

Hosts sina John "Sweet" Lapus, Venus Raj, at Alex Gonzaga.

LILIA WINS.

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, ang narrative film na ito ay tila isang documentary tungkol sa pagkaka-nominate ni Lilia sa isang acting award for the first time in her long showbiz career.

"Bale, it's a process.

"E, nagkataon, last year, nabuntis ako at nanganak ako, so parang nakaka-relate ako sa pinagdaanan nila."

"One-hundred percent sila. Wala silang bawal, o ano, binigay nila lahat."

Hit films, critics' faves lead nominees at 28th PMPC Star Awards for Movies
    By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ
    February 28, 2012, 11:09am

MANILA, Philippines – Movies that shook the box office tills, as well as those that reaped recognitions here or abroad, are at the forefront of nominees at the 28th Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for Movies.

Leading the pack are the controversial “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story,” which swept the most number of trophies in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival,;another MMFF entry, “Ang Panday 2;” and the romance-drama “In The Name of Love.” They are all nominated in 11 categories, including Movie of the Year, Director, Original Screenplay, Editor, and Cinematographer.

Meanwhile, the second highest-grossing Filipino film of all time, “No Other Woman,” is up for eight awards, including Movie of the Year, Director, and Actor and Actress for Derek Ramsay and Anne Curtis, respectively.

Apparently for a close fight in the digital circle are “Thelma,” with 11 nominations, and “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank,” and “Ang Sayaw Ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa,” with 10 each. The three films vie for major trophies such as Digital Movie of the Year, Digital Movie Director, and Digital Movie Original Screenplay. Maja Salvador (“Thelma”) and Eugene Domingo (“Septic Tank”) are both nominated in the Actress category, while the former’s co-stars Tetchie Agbayani and Eliza Pineda compete for a Supporting Actress trophy. “Sayaw”’s Rocco Nacino earned a nod for New Movie Actor.

“Septic Tank” was not only a hit among local audiences and critics, it has also caught the eye of international film festivals, and most notably, the 84th Academy Awards (Oscars), where it was shortlisted for the nominees in its Best Foreign Language Film category. Meanwhile, “Sayaw” was well-received at the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Bogota International Film Festival in Colombia, where it clinched the Pre-Columbian Bronze Circle Award last year. “Thelma,” meanwhile, was screened at the Hawaii International Film Festival and will take part at the 22nd Cinequest Film Festival in California.

The 28th PMPC Star Awards for Movies will take place on March 14 at the Meralco Theater in Pasig City. Kapamilya stars KC Concepcion, Anne Curtis, and Derek Ramsay will host the ceremony.

Vice Ganda named Phenomenal Box-Office Star; Derek Ramsay is Box-Office King while Anne Curtis and Cristine Reyes share Box-Office Queen title
    Nora V. Calderon
    Wednesday, April 18, 2012 @ 11:09AM

Haruo, Adolfo Alix Jr.’s tale about a Yakuza member seeking to lead a new life in Manila, got the nod of the Young Critics Circle as the best film of 2011. YCC drew its selection from both regular and non-regular releases comprising the entirety of Philippine cinema output in 2011. Films considered for discussion were those that had three or more screenings before a paying or non-paying audience in any public venue.

The organization departs from many conventions of other award-giving bodies both here and abroad in bestowing cinematic honors. For instance, the award for Best Film of the Year is reserved for the director such that no separate prize for direction is needed. The Best Performance award is most coveted as it is conferred on a screen performer whether male or female, adult or child, individual or as part of an ensemble, in leading or supporting role. To uphold a more dynamic and encompassing way of looking at films, technical honors refer to fusion of outstanding efforts in fields otherwise deemed apart. In this case, the Best Cinematography and Visual Design recognition covers both camerawork and art direction. Similarly, Best Sound and Aural Orchestration encompasses not sound engineering alone but musical score as well.

Established in 1990, YCC is composed of members of academe who, through the years, have become attentive observers of Philippine cinema. Coming from various disciplines, they bring an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of film. Current members are from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University.

Members of the Film Desk include Eloisa May P. Hernandez (President), Tessa Maria Guazon (Vice President), Romulo P. Baquiran Jr., Flaudette May V. Datuin, Noel D. Ferrer, Patrick D. Flores, Eulalio Guieb III, J. Pilapil Jacobo, Nonoy L. Lauzon, Eileen C. Legaspi-Ramirez, Gerard R. A. Lico, Jema Pamintuan, Choy Pangilinan, Jerry C. Respeto, Jaime Oscar M. Salazar, Neil Martial R. Santillan, and Galileo S. Zafra. New members include JPaul Manzanilla and Skilty Labastilla.

NOW MASSING AT THE STARTING LINE
by Jose N. Carreon | Posted in Articles | on Fri, Jan 13, 2012

With the Golden Globe awards unfolding on Sunday, January 15, and the Oscar Awards on February 26, the local versions of award-giving on film achievements here literally are massing now at the starting line.

Members of the URIAN, the FAMAS (with two factions co-existing), the CMMA, the FAP, the PMPC, the Young Critics’ Circle will soon troop to review films exhibited in 2011 for their consideration.

In 2011, a total of 78 local feature-length films were shown in cinema-houses—34 mainstream films and 44 digital or indie films. Of this output, eight films were rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and 24 were rated B.

Logically, the award-giving bodies will focus their attention on the rated films and eventually review them one after another—not necessarily on the chronological basis of their exhibition in local cinemahouses nor the ranking of movie critics and the like.

To make matters simple, therefore, let us list the Rated A films first then scan the much larger grouping of Rated B films. In order not to insinuate bias into the proceedings, the Rated A films are presented alphabetically.

    Ang Babae sa Septic Tank
A 2011 Cinemalaya entry in the New Breed category, it is directed by Marlon Rivera from the screenplay of Chris Martinez and produced by Martinez Rivera Films, Quantum Films and Straight Shooters Media, Inc. It stars Eugene Domingo, JM de Guzman and Kean Cipriano. The film follows a day of three film school graduates (Jocelyn, Rainier and Bingbong) as they go through pre-production activities that include a courtesy call to their lead actress played by Eugene Domingo as herself and their on-the-spot inspection of the Payatas dumpsite, their film’s major backdrop. (Shown August 3, 2011)

Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story
Produced by Scenema Concept International and Viva Films, it is directed by Tikoy Aguiluz who demanded that his credit be deleted as director before the filmfest. It stars Laguna Gov. Jeorge “E.R.’ Estregan in the title role, as well as Carla Abellana, Philip Salvador, John Regala, Baron Geisler, Yul Servo, Amay Bisaya, Ronnie Lazaro, Dennis Padilla, Ketchup Eusebio, Ping Medina, Gerald Ejercito, Roi Vinzon, Joko Diaz, Archi Adamos and Roldan Aquino. This is another remake of the Asiong Salonga legend as the kingpin of Tondo in the early 1950s. (Shown on Dec. 25, 2011)

    No Other Woman
Produced by Star Cinema, it is directed by Ruel Bayani from the story and script of Keiko Aquino, Ricardo Fernando III and Kris G. Gazmen. It stars Anne Curtis, Derek Ramsay, Cristine Reyes, Tirso Cruz III, Carmi Martin and John Arcilla. The film unravels the story of a successful businessman whose perfect marriage with his young wife degenerates into a complicated love triangle when he plunges into an adulterous affair with his millionaire client’s daughter. (Shown on Sept. 28, 2011)

    Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa
Produced by Ignatius Films for the 2011 Cinemalaya, it is directed by Alvin B. Yapan. It stars Paulino Avelino, Rocco Nacino and Jean Garcia. Weaving the essence of poetry and dance into the unlikely triangle among a poetess, her student and a male dance teacher with the student caught in the middle. The cast includes members of the FEU Dance Company and the Company of Dance Artists (CODA). (Shown on October 26, 2011)

    Segunda Mano
Produced by Star Cinema, Agosto Dos Pictures and MJM Productions, it is directed by Joyce Bernal for the last Metro Manila Film Festival where it was the second top grossing film. It stars Kris Aquino, Dingdong Dantes, Angelica Panganiban, Bangs Garcia, Jhong Hilario and Helen Gamboa. An intricate horror-suspense drama that draws a thin line between the living and the ghostly that finally delivers a jolting discovery at the climax. (Shown on Dec. 25, 2011)

    Senior Year
Produced by Digitank Studio and Metric Films, it is directed by Jerrold Tarog. Featuring real high school students who have no film acting experience, the story focuses on the experiences that come in the final year of high school life for students of a private Catholic high school in Manila. (Shown on March 9, 2011)

    Thelma
Produced by Star Cinema, it is directed by Paul Soriano from a script he has co-written with Froi Medina. It stars Maja Salvador in the lead role with Jason Abalos, Tetchie Agbayani, John Arcilla and Elma Muros as herself. The story revolves around a tomboyish lass from Ilocos Norte who discovers that her uncanny physical ability to run may be the only means she can lift her family to a decent life. (Shown on Sept. 7, 2011)

Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington
Produced by Origin 8 and Reality, it is directed by Jade Castro, starring Mart Escudero, Roderick Paulate, Lauren Young, Janice de Belen, John Regala with the guesting of Eugene Domingo and Marian Rivera. The film follows the slow metamorphosis of a young man into a gay because of a slighted fairy’s curse. A horror-comedy film, the climax unleashes gay zombies into the streets of Lucban as the now gay leading man tries to revert to his lost manhood. (Shown on August 1, 2011)
