nice thread. it seems hindi pinoy si TS. di nya sinasagot mga tagalog questions eh. by the way, UNO has been around for a long time.

The MLM companies are probably doing ok. After all, they're the one's raking in the moolah from their captive consumers.

    The real question should be:

How are the MLM recruits doing today?

Masaya 'tong thread na 'to for me. I just recently signed up with a direct marketing company because I'm trying to help a friend. May time pa akong umurong because the registration fee is refundable. I'm weighing the pros and cons para hindi mabiktima.

    Thousands of middlemen (and women).
If MLM were involved in standard retail markets, they would of course have to price products low enough to compete with the competition. In order to avoid operating as an illegal pyramid scheme, they need to sell most of their products to customers who are not involved in the network of participants. To do this, one would think that MLM products would be priced competitively. But typically they are not. So why not?

The obvious reason is that they must pay multiple levels of participants – far more than is the case in a standard retail market. So again, the claim by MLM promoters that they cut out the middleman is patently false. MLMs can create thousands of middlemen in the form of downline participants.
I wasn't sure kung totoo ba talaga yung claim nila and then I was selling some stuff to my mother-in-law na Dutch (you know, the European version of the Ilocanos?) and she computed it herlself. The price is actually reasonable, meaning almost the same price as when you go to your favorite grocery stores. Hindi naman siguro sila "nalulugi"?

Reality is that most (if not all) products of MLM companies are over priced

And this is simply because of their compensation plans for their distributors.
Sad part about this is that, MLMers act as if they are salesman
    Expecting to sell something overpriced

    Tennisace and jong_deleon are right
And this is because MLMers are doing it wrong

    @tennisace
    You’re partly correct
But there are still some MLM companies that are closing down. But I wouldn’t say “captive customers”.
Some are just stup-id enough to believe all the false promises provided by the people who recruited them.

But there is one thing I am sure of, MLM industry is a legitimate business.
The MLM industry was proven as a legitimate business by the US federal government in 1979, they sued AMWAY proving that they are illegal, and they failed.

pero shempre, hindi WIN WIN situation ang MLM – some people just wants a WIN WIN business
That’s why they are negative about MLM, but they failed to look at other businesses

Try to compare these two videos – they should answer most questions about MLM, even comparing the speakers would already give you an idea.

Just a few points I want to make regarding above post:

MLM recruits consume their own product, and the product is largely distributed and consumed within the MLM "network" because it is in the MLM recruits' interest to do so. If they are not "captive customers", what would you call them? Fanatical consumers of their own product?

I think that before dragging the 1979 Amway case out of the closet, you should at least study the case and the adjudication of the case. This case had nothing to do with the MLM industry as an illegitimate business. This was about the FTCs allegation that Amway was operating an illegal pyramid scheme. Amway was, of course, cleared of wrongdoing. However, part of the adjudication maintains that the Amway system should be based on retail sales to consumers, that the 70% rule must be adhered to and that developing (recruiting) distributors must be secondary to retailing. The ruling also required Amway to make distributor income disclosures to prospects.

While the Amway ruling established that the Amway method of selling (MLM) is not a pyramid scheme, it also established rules to be adhered to for an MLM not to be considered an illegal pyramid scheme.

If you were operating your MLM distributorship in the US, you'd probably be sued already. MLMs should be based on retail sales, yet you're saying that distributors who are retailing are doing it wrong. In the US, it's illegal for you not to. Do you adhere to the 70% rule? Is retail sales the primary focus, or is recruitment the primary activity of the so-called business? Do you give prospects the required distributor income disclosures?

    If not:
At worst, it's pyramiding. At best, its scamming.
