I believe that's the whole purpose behind this move.To ensure that SMART will prevent their competitors from getting added mileage at the venue. Of course, nothing will stop GLOBE from advertising in events to be held at the Araneta Coliseum, but they have to contend with the imposing SMART logo that's imprinted in the venue halls, corridors and courtside.

It's also a realignment of forces. When the SM Arena opens next year, expect San Miguel to try and link up with the Sy family on this. The connection is not just business, it also goes into basketball. Bobby Parks is part of the bench at NU, he's also an assistant coach at Petron. There's no denying that the real prize in the Bobby Parks sweepstakes is his son Ray-Ray. This is the same tug-o-war being experienced for Junmar Fajardo.

Di ba may San Miguel By the bay sa mall of asia?

it's called advertising and brand recall..

remember, nung na bankrupt ang Citibank, and na-bailout sila ng US taxpayers for $10+Billion, they continued with their dealings to name the new NY Mets statdium as CitiField even after galing sa taxpayers ang pera nila.

After that, nagkaron ng impression ang public na stable na ang Citi and after 2 years, naisauli na nila yung $billions sa US Treasury after nilang kumita uli. I think that's a sound advertising strategy and a good investment. yun nga lang olats pa rin ang Mets

very unlikely to happen dude. pwede pa pre-season games. pero yung official NBA games. I cant recall kung nagkaroon na ng official NBA game outside the home courts of 2 playing teams. IMHO

^Last march New Jersey and Toronto played 2 regualar season games at O2 arena in London.

I think Araneta did this so that PBA will stay in Araneta. Kahit ano pa sabihin ng iba na wala na nanunuod ng PBA, some teams are still drawing crowds even in regular games.

NBA: London calling as Raptors, Nets play first in Europe
    03/02/2011 | 03:34 PM
TORONTO - In a season to forget, this weekend could be one to remember for the Toronto Raptors as they travel to London to take on the New Jersey Nets in the first NBA regular season games staged in Europe.

With the Raptors (17-44) and Nets (17-43) anchored near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and all but out of playoff contention, the games on Friday and Saturday at the O2 Arena in London will have little significance other than marking another milestone in the NBA's expansion plans.

The London games will not feature the creme-de-la-creme of the NBA with the Raptors beating the New Orleans Hornets 96-90 on Tuesday for just their fourth win in 24 games while the Nets head to Europe mired in a six-game losing slump.

They will, however, bring plenty of international content that the NBA hopes European fans will be able to identify with.

"It's a great chance for brand building but we have been building our brand in Europe for many years with the acquisition of so many foreign players," Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo told Reuters. "We've always been very in favour of the concept.

"It's important to the league and important to us as a franchise to participate in the global growth of the game."

Raptors coach Jay Triano had expressed annoyance at having to make a late season visit to London telling local media the trip was an unwanted distraction and that while the Nets were in the same boat there "are 28 other teams that aren't".

But as Triano and his players along with 140 sponsors, special season ticket holders, staff and mascot "The Raptor" prepared to board an NBA charter flight late on Tuesday, the Toronto coach was towing the party line.

"A lot of our guys are from there (Europe) but a lot of the young guys have never been outside North America before and it's a great opportunity for them," said Triano.

"There are 82 games in a season and I would think that at the end of most our players' careers the two they play in London might be the two they remember more than anything else."

One of the world's most cosmopolitan cities, the Raptors have often reflected Toronto's diverse makeup scouring foreign leagues as much as American colleges for players.

Italian Andrea Bargnani is the centrepiece of a lineup that includes Spaniard Jose Calderon, Brazilian Leandro Barbosa, Frenchman Alexis Ajinca and Lithuanian Linas Kleiza.

The Raptors also staged their 2007 training camp in Italy and Spain and have become one of Europe's most popular NBA teams, with their jersey among the league's biggest sellers.

"It's a great experiment for everyone," said Colangelo. "It's great for the NBA to have this sort of exposure leading up to the London Games.

"When you go over there and see the people react it's nice to have some identity there.

"When you look at jersey sales in Europe you don't see the usual suspects.

"When you look at the overall makeup of our team it's a diverse team, we come from a diverse city we are the only true international franchise being based in Canada.

"We're building on that." - Reuters

London's O2 Arena to host NBA regular season matches

New Jersey Nets beat Toronto Raptors in overtime

New Jersey secured a repeat win over the Toronto Raptors when they took the second NBA game of the weekend 137-136 in triple overtime at the O2 Arena.
Travis Outlaw scored New Jersey's final eight points to lead them to victory in a match that thrilled the London fans.
Brook Lopez led the Nets' scoring with 34 points and Sasha Vujacic added 25.
Toronto were led by Italy's Andrea Bargnani, who hit a game-high 35 points and DeMar DeRozan, who scored 30 points for the second successive night.
The Raptors will feel hugely deflated after the way they responded to Friday's defeat in Europe's first regular season NBA game with a much-improved shooting performance, especially in the first half.
In the end it was the Nets who shot better from distance. Astonishingly, Vujacic hit his first five attempts and went on to add another in the first overtime period.
Toronto led 30-23 at the end of the first quarter and in the second quarter their much-vaunted fast break game bore fruit, with Brazil's Leandro Barbosa again coming alive for 10 points on his way to 22 on the night.
Yet New Jersey stole a 65-62 half-time lead with late couple of threes from Vujacic, both of them on passes from Deron Williams, who ended the match with an impressive 18 assists and 21 points.
Toronto were edging the last quarter of regulation time until their scoring stalled in the closing stages.
Ed Davis missed a pair of free throws with two minutes and 26 seconds remaining and the score 106-103, inviting a Nets comeback which duly came, Williams feeding Kris Humphries for a dunk and then Lopez hitting a pair of free throws with 1:06 left.
Bargnani's missed three-pointer left Toronto in trouble, especially when Lopez saved a Williams fumble with a long two as the shot-clock expired.
Trailing 109-106 with 32 seconds left, Toronto scored on their next trip down the floor, Amir Johnson rebounding for two to break a three-minute scoring drought.
Vujacic then hit a free throw and Toronto came out of their 20-second timeout with a spin for two by DeRozan to tie the game and force overtime at 110-110 when New Jersey's last offence produced a missed three from Williams.
In the first extra period, Toronto led 119-116 only for Vujacic to hit an off-balance three-pointer on New Jersey's last offence. Bargnani missed Toronto's last opportunity and a second five minutes went on the clock.
New Jersey then held a 124-123 lead going into the last minute, only for Bargnani to splash his third three of the game with 31 seconds remaining.
Williams then rescued a blocked Humphries shot and nailed a two with 10 seconds remaining. DeRozan missed Toronto's final shot and a third extra period was necessary.
Three free throws from Vujacic, a pair of frees and then a long two from Outlaw put the Nets in charge as both teams started to show signs of fatigue.
Incredibly, Toronto came back with a two from Barbosa and, after another Outlaw basket, a two from DeRozan and a three-point play from Bargnani to trail by two points with 47 second left. With 21 seconds left, Barbosa hit a three to give the Raptors a 136-135 lead.
Outlaw then hit both free throws after a foul by Johnson with 12.6 seconds left.
Bargnani jinked against Humphries but missed his team's last roll of the dice with a fadeaway jumpshot and the Nets had escaped to a second win in a little over 24 hours.
"They deserved to win just as much as we did," admitted Nets coach Avery Johnson. "But unfortunately these games don't end in a tie. This is one of the best wins I've been involved in."
Raptors coach Jay Triano was upbeat despite having his team travel all the way from Toronto for two tiring defeats.
"It was a great game for our guys to play in," he said. "This is part of the growth we're looking for.
"We have a young team and it helps their mental focus and we've thoroughly enjoyed our trip. It's been a great experience despite the losses."

Sa Europe naman po, medyo hi-tech na, baka mahirapang i-cover ng live ng NBA kapag dito sa atin ginanap at mahirapan silang i-telecast ng live ang game sa national TV.

    Could be..

Smart's competitors would surely have to find a new Venue to stage their events.. otherwise gigisa sila sa sarili nilang mantika..

Those SMART ARANETA logo and ad placement would surely an eyesore to Globe etc on their blockbuster events

SM MOA Arena will open next year, malamang dun na gagawin ng Globe ang events nila. Ang NCAA (& UAAP I think) nag press release na dun ang opening ceremony nila next year.

well, smart lang naman ang pinag-uusapan dito, not the media outfits competing each other. UAAP will still held its games in "Smart Araneta coliseum"

maybe a competitor of smart sponsoring an event may not held it at "Smart Araneta coliseum" and might do it somewhere else.

At hindi rin papayag si MVP na hindi ipapalabas ang UAAP/NCAA games sa TV, kahit competitor niya ang ABS. After all, he's funding three college teams: ADMU, SBC, and FEU.
