Sobrang naging exciting ang week na to. One team almost pulled an upset against a big fish, while the best probably would be the game between UST and DLSU. Two overtime periods! Tapos akala pa ng La Salle ay panalo na sila! Really a cardiac game!
Mukhang UST ulit ang No. 1 sa Weekly Rankings. Well, probably, this will be their best season for the past five years since their championship. They don't want to enter the Finals with another Cinderella Story. This time, a pool of talented players and a really deep bench. I'm expecting a 6-1 win-loss card for them!

    --

Here's my ranking for this week:

    1.UST
    2.Ateneo
    3.FEU
    4.NU
    5.UP
    6.DLSU
    7.AdU
    8.UE

    Players
1.Mariano (UST) -really the game-changer! Mr. Clutch!
2.Romeo (FEU) - really improved a lot especially from beyond the arc!
3.Abdul (UST) - no doubt the league's Best Rebounder.
4.Bautista (UST) - six triples in one game! The hell!
    5.Ravena (Ateneo)

UAAP SEASON 75 WEEK 4 REVIEW:

*Each weekly review contains updated Team Standings, Team Power Rankings, Player Awards, and Statistical Leaders.

    WEEK 4 TEAM STANDINGS:

    WEEK 4 POWER RANKINGS:
    Let the disagreements begin!

1- UST Growling Tigers: I’m still picking UST as the top team for one simple reason – after going four games against, arguably, four of the top seven deepest college teams in the country (the other three are Beda, Baste, and UST itself) the Tigers are at 3-1, and, in fact, they could’ve just as easily been 4-0. The truth is, UST has performed way beyond expectations despite probably the toughest opening three-week schedule of any team out there. Now with UE, Adamson, and UP as their next opponents, Coach Pido Jarencio’s wards are in good shape to end the first round at the top of the standings.

2- Ateneo Blue Eagles: The Eagles are tied for first after two wins in Week 4, but those wins weren’t the demolition jobs most of their fans probably expected. In both games against UP and UE, Ateneo had to regroup in the second half to secure the twin victories. There are two possible perspectives to take here. The first one is to see Ateneo as far from the powerful team their roster might make them out to be. They are vulnerable. The second one is to see Ateneo as a strong second half team – a team that cranks it up at just the right time. Right now, I’m leaning more towards the former. It’ll take a big win over FEU in week 5 for me to swing the other way.

3- NU Bulldogs: What a difference a week makes! A few days after being criticized for floundering against high quality opposition, the Bulldogs beat the Tamaraws and then stuffed the Falcons. Ray Parks didn’t score as much as he usually does, but he showed how good a facilitator he could be. The scary thing with Coach Eric Altamirano’s crew is when the guys NOT named Parks or Mbe click, they’re almost unstoppable. Against DLSU in week 5, those guys will have to click if the Bulldogs want a shot at second spot.

4- FEU Tamaraws: They’re tied for first in the standings, but that doesn’t necessarily make the Tamaraws the best team in the land. If their performance in Week 4 proved anything, it’s this – FEU will only go as far as Terrence Romeo will take them. RR Garcia has been missing, and Mike Tolomia has been inconsistent. They’re not looking to establish Anthony Hargrove as hard as they should, and Arvie Bringas is a walking, ticking, time bomb. As long as Romeo does his best Ray Parks stat-stuffing impersonation, then FEU should do well, but can he do this for 8 more elimination round games? I have an ominous feeling the law of averages will catch up with him soon enough, and FEU will be worse for wear when that happens. I’m sure Coach Bert Flores is hoping Romeo can keep waxing hot against the Eagles on Sunday.

5- DLSU Green Archers: In Filipino parlance, ginto na naging bato pa. As far as I can see, there are two things holding back the Green Archers. The most obvious one is free throw shooting. They’re not exactly the worst in the league, but because they have the third-most charity attempts, each missed free throw is magnified. It also hurts that those misses usually come in crunch time. The second thing is what I believe to be Coach Gee Abanilla’s over-reliance on Jeron Teng. Teng is an awesome talent, no doubt about that, but his inexperience has really cost La Salle dearly. Coach Gee is probably building Teng up for the future, but he seems to be doing so at the expense of the present. If Teng continues to cough up the ball and miss from the line, then the Falcons and Bulldogs will be all too happy to pounce and chomp on DLSU this week.

6- UP Fighting Maroons: The Maroons are at 0-5, which is the worst record so far, but their performances have shown that they are not the worst team out there. They scared the bejeezus out of Ateneo last Thursday, and deserved to win against FEU this past Sunday. If they stay true to form, which just means if Chris Ball and Mark Lopez continue to play well and if Mike Silungan and Raul Soyud can improve their shot-selection, then UP should enjoy a win over UE on Sunday.

7- UE Red Warriors: The Reds frustrated Ateneo for one whole half before their well dried up in the last twenty minutes. UE can actually put forth a solid starting unit led by Roi Sumang, Chris Javier, and Adrian Santos, but they’ll need inspired play from the supporting cast to threaten for an entire game. I seriously doubt their chances against the Tigers on Wednesday, but, if they play their cards right, an upset against UP this coming weekend might not be too farfetched.

8- Adamson Soaring Falcons: Even with a healthy Alex Nuyles, the Falcons wouldn’t be in the top half of these rankings, but now that he’s out possibly for a significant amount of time, things are bound to get really bad for the San Marcelino five. Jericho Cruz’s production continues to be up-and-down, while opposing defenses have figured out how to defend Eric Camson. The only constant so far has been Rodney Brondial, but his propensity to get into foul trouble doesn’t exactly make him a prime candidate for a leader. The struggles will continue to get even tougher as La Salle and UST await them in Week 5.

With 1-3 games remaining before the end of 1st round, mukhang ito na ang magiging kakalabasan ng standings. Maliban pa sa pinakita nila this first round.

    1. UST 6-1 Really the contender for the title this season. Malamang sila rin ang magiging mahigpit na kalaban ng Ateneo sa Drive for Five nila. Games left: UE, UP and Adamson. Complacency na lang ang kalaban nila against the three cellar dwellers. Adamson could really put a good fight if they still have Nuyles. Pero wala na eh. Possible nga sana ang 7-0 sa Tigers kung di lang nautakan ng FEU. Mag-iimprove pa sila sa 2nd round. They have the deepest bench in the league. Versatile din ang mga players nila. Siguro down-the-stretch composure na lang. So far, lahat ng four games nila ang pinakaexciting this season.

    2. Ateneo 6-1 One game left against FEU, but I know they're the better team. With the win over the other rule, pang-second lang sila even if ending with 6-1. I kind of disappointed with their last two games. Muntik-muntikan pa sa UP, and a weak start against UE. Still a contender though for another championship, but they should work hard. Aminin natin, even if they have Ravena+Salva+Slaughter, humina sila.

    3. NU 5-2 - One game left against La Salle. I think they're going to nail it. Depende na sa mangyayari pero this team got the best free throwers in the league. La Salle's weakness is their strength. For sure, it will be Parks and Mbe who will lead the team. They'll do better in the second round. Kapag matalo sila sa La Salle, maniniwala akong na-hype nga lang sila hihi.

    4. FEU 5-2 If RR Garcia and Tolomia keep playing like that, matatalo talaga sila sa Ateneo. MVP-caliber na talaga si Terence Romeo, but he can't lift up the team by himself. Foul trouble masyado ang FEU. Kung tutuusin, they are the better team than NU. Kung di lang sa foul, malamang nanalo pa sila. Medyo di rin kagandahan ang last game nila sa UP. Muntik pa sila ma-upset amp!

    5. La Salle 4-3 Crucial ang last game nila sa NU for a good finish after first round. Against Adamson, they are the better team. Siguro sa three-game losing streak nila ay may natutunan na sila especially their loss against UST. Huwag din masyadong si Jeron ang focus. They have a good line-up actually, di lang macapitalize dahil iba-iba ang utak ng coaches nila.

    6. Adamson 2-5 things getting worse. UST at UE na lang, mukhang UE lang matatalo nila. Nawalan na nga ng key players, dumagdag pa si Alex Nuyles. Hindi ko na makita sa laro si Eric Camson. I don't know what happened to him. Nawala na ang galing niya sa mid-range even his beyond-the-arc shots. He should lead the team. Problema rin nila ay sentro. Brondial is doing well, pero hindi nila makayanan bantayan ang mga sentro ng ibang teams. Against UST, mukhang mapa-foul trouble lang sila kay Karim Abdul.

    7. UP 1-6 Games left against UE and UST. Against the Red Warriors, definitely they are the better team. Pero against UST, mukhang di nila kaya. Although I salute them for giving the thrills this first round. Iba rin ang mga steals nila at tres, although not really working dahil nasasayang lang naman. Their games against Ateneo and FEU should give them the courage to get a win, at least in the second round. At least they were able to thwart two of the strongest teams this season.

    8. UE 0-7 Bawi tayo sa second round guys!

  8. #68
I wonder how the games and venue will take place with how the weather plays with it.

I'm happy that UST is surpassing most people's expectations.

    player power rankings (aug. 2-5)

    power rankings (aug. 2-5)

caption: emmanuel mbe's emergence the past week catapulted him atop the latest edition of the power rankings.

the stars came out to play in last week’s set of games as they led their respective teams to victories thanks primarily to their individual talents. one unlikely under-the-radar big man jumped all the way to the top seat, while two prolific wingmen returned on the list with clutch performances. basketball will always be a game of five players, but sometimes, one guy could make all the difference between winning and losing, and that was exactly the case majority of last week.

    1. emmanuel mbe – nu
wins over feu and adamson: 16.0 ppg, 68.7 fg%, 13.5 rpg
    newcomer

bulldozing his way to the top spot is mbe, who delivered a monster double-double week. he’s really settled into his role as robin to ray parks’ batman, resulting to his efficiency on the court. it’s a huge difference from his lackluster play last season, wherein he looked lost and tried to do things on his own. the import from cameroon is playing in his final year and he’s hell-bent on at least making a much-awaited trip to the final four. if he keeps this up, that won’t be impossible.

    2. ray parks – nu
wins over feu and adamson: 14.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 6.0 apg
    returnee

incidentally, playing second fiddle to mbe in this edition of the power rankings is parks, who churned out all-around numbers in nu’s back-to-back wins. basketball really looks effortless for the reigning mvp, even bailing the bulldogs out in crunch time versus feu last thursday with his ability to draw fouls and go to the line. he usually defers to his teammates in the first half to get them involved, but when the game is on the line, there’s no question where the ball will go to.

    3. aljon mariano – ust
win over la salle: 15 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts
    returnee

speaking of games being on the line, mariano epitomized the old basketball adage that big-time players make big-time shots. he almost single-handedly carried ust versus la salle in the crucial stretches of the game, scoring 13 of the team’s last 15 points, including the overtime-forcing shot and the game-winner in the second extension. his athleticism, speed, and strength make him a match-up problem for most big men, and that says a lot for an undersized power forward.

    4. greg slaughter – ateneo
wins over UP and UE: 13.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.0 apg
    last week: no. 4

sgt. slaughter stays at the fourth spot with another solid performance last week, leading ateneo to back-to-back wins against the two cellar-dwellers. the blue eagles faced a tough challenge against up but last year’s mvp runner-up went to work in the second half, quelling the upset-seeking fighting maroons. he was then banged-up by the physical play of ue’s big men last saturday but he never lost his cool and just went down to business for the reigning uaap kings.

    5. terrence romeo – feu
loss to nu and win over up: 21.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 5.5 apg
    last week: no. 1

romeo could’ve easily locked the top spot for a second straight week if not for feu’s loss to nu last thursday. still, the former uaap juniors mvp showcased another stellar week with his multifaceted game, almost finishing with a triple-double versus adamson. he’s been carrying the fight for the tamaraws, with his partner r.r. garcia struggling to find his offensive rhythm. what’s working for the third year guard is he’s more relaxed and he’s just simply enjoying the game.

UAAP SEASON 75 WEEK 5 REVIEW:

*Each weekly review contains updated Team Standings, Team Power Rankings, Player Awards, and Statistical Leaders.

    WEEK 5 TEAM STANDINGS:

    WEEK 5 POWER RANKINGS:
    Let the disagreements begin!

1- UST Growling Tigers: The Tigers played really well despite news of Jeric Teng’s partial MCL tear. If Louie Vigil and Kevin Ferrer can consistently reel in numbers similar to what they produced against UE, then the Tigers will hardly even miss Teng. Still, this is a team better with the former Xavier Stallion. Jeric Fortuna needs to regain the form of past seasons, but even now UST is doing great – they’re tops in scoring (77.8ppg), 3-point shooting (32.7%), and perimeter scoring (32.8ppg). They’re also near the top (at least top 3) in all major stat categories except blocks (where they’re dead last; that’s what NOT having Chris Camus will do). They should go 6-1 after dealing with Adamson and UP this week. Should.

2- Ateneo Blue Eagles: Not playing this past week should have given the Eagles a lot of rest in preparation for a titanic tussle with the Tamaraws this weekend. This is the second-best scoring and best defensive team in the league right now, and they have almost every advantage going into their final first round encounter. The main concern for Ateneo is their perimeter scoring, where they’re dead last in the league. Shooting a league-worst 19.0% from beyond the arc will do that. This is a very dump-it-down-low-or-drive-strong-to-the-hole team, which might be trouble because FEU is currently the third-best shot-blocking team out there. Of course, they haven’t faced a seven-footer yet this season.

3- NU Bulldogs: The Bulldogs turned the corner in Week 4 and should continue riding high against a hobbling La Salle squad this week. They have, arguably, the best inside-outside combo in college basketball, and Tory Rosario is slowly morphing into a potentially explosive scoring option. The critical weakness so far has been their erratic bench play, which is last in the league in point production. If Coach Eric Altamirano can find a way for his second unit to sustain the intensity of his starters, then perhaps NU can realize its championship potential.

4- FEU Tamaraws: Like Ateneo, FEU had a break in Week 5, which is probably good since their upcoming match should be one for the books. The Tams are near the top in many categories, save for three. At 57.3% accuracy, Coach Bert Flores’s wards comprise the second-worst free throw shooting unit in the league. They’re also second-to-the-last in rebounds, and dead last in steals. And, yes, the real RR Garcia has not yet showed up. If the Moraytans can compete with Ateneo’s vaunted frontline, and if Garcia rediscovers his velvet touch, then the Tams just might continue enjoying the view from the top of the heap.

5- DLSU Green Archers: Even an LA Revilla-less DLSU team shouldn’t have struggled the way it did against an Alex Nuyles-depleted Adamson team, right? Right, and the only things that saved them was a game-ending run anchored on the heroics of Yutien Andrada and Jeron Teng. Much has been said about their atrocious free throw shooting, rightfully so since they’re the worst team bar none, but their struggles can also be blamed on two other things: perimeter scoring and turnovers. La Salle shoots just 20.5% from three, and they score just 17.3 perimeter points per game, both of which are second-worst. Also, only Adamson and UE turn the ball over more than the Archers do. Yikes. Against an NU team near the top in steals, turnover points, and tops in fast break points, La Salle might be in for a hellish time.

6- UP Fighting Maroons: UP should get its first win against UE this coming week, and, frankly, nobody can put it past the Maroons to upset UST. Looking at the Maroons’ stats actually reveals they’re not as bad as their record suggests. They’re top 3 in free throw shooting and perimeter points. They’re second in blocks and have the second-fewest turnover average. They’re number one in steals and bench scoring, and only UST scores more points-off-turnovers per game. Coach Ricky Dandan should be glowing with pride, but the Diliman five has yet to close out well. In most of their games, they’ve been in a position to win, but either they just didn’t make the shots that counted, or the breaks didn’t go their way. Fortune has to smile on them someday, and that day could be closing in really fast.

7- Adamson Soaring Falcons: Props to the Falcons for giving the Archers a big scare despite not having Alex Nuyles. Ryan Monteclaro hit a bunch of treys, Rodney Brondial was solid, Roider Cabrera showed that he could take the ball to the hole, and even Jansen Rios had some nice moments. The missing guy was Eric Camson. So far, this season has proven that Camson struggles when nobody creates FOR him. He needs someone to attract the defense, to be the decoy, to give him the ball in his sweet spots. We’ve seen him able to create off low post moves in the past, but now that he’s the biggest star (maybe the only star) on this Adamson squad, he should expect that things won’t open up as easily as they once did. He’s averaging about the same number of points as last season, but his FG% has dipped significantly (48% last year to just 33% so far this season). Last season, he hoisted about 10 shots per game. He’s norming about 3 more shots this season, but, again, he isn’t making good on most of those. If Adamson wants to avoid the gutter, Camson needs to redefine the way he plays.

8- UE Red Warriors: The Red Warriors are last in offense, last in defense, last in FG%, last in assists, last in fast break points, and they’re the most turnover-prone unit of the lot. It’s no big surprise they’re neck-deep in losses, but they have had some flashes of brilliance. Roi Sumang continues to command attention, and it looks like Adrian Santos might be getting into the flow of things already. JR Sumido was also sharp against UST. Coach Jerry Codiñera just has to find a way to bring all these disparate talents together and make them coalesce into an efficient basketball team. Going up against the two other lower-rung teams (Adamson and UP) might be a good chance for them to steal a win and gain a much-needed morale boost.

    power rankings (aug. 12)
    by paolo mariano

La Salle greenhorn Jeron Teng muscled his way to this week's Power Rankings, along with four others who stepped up in last week's pair of games.

obviously, last week’s top performer was the monsoon, which wreaked havoc all over. it definitely made it rain. but seriously, with only one playing date on tap, it was extra difficult to choose who makes it to the fab five. luckily, several players delivered their best games of the young season. with the slimmed-down schedule, three newcomers made the list, but it feels this won’t be their last.

    1. karim abdul – ust

win vs. ue: 20 pts, 19 rebs, 2 blks

    newcomer

the bull-strong center from cameroon finally makes it to the list. abdul’s having another mvp-type season but his efforts usually get overshadowed by others. not this time though. his huge double-double effort carried ust to its fourth straight win, outplaying every ue big man thrown at him. he sank jumpers, stayed poised despite the physicality, and most importantly, ruled the boards. with the way he’s playing, it’s not a stretch to say he’s the best big man in the league.

    2. jeron teng – la salle

win vs. adamson: 15 pts, 10 rebs, 1 stl

    returnee

la Salle’s rock-hard rookie returns on the fab five with a heroic performance over adamson. he made three of the green archers’ last five points, including the game-sealing free throw with five seconds left. clearly, he doesn’t shy away from banging bodies in the paint and drives to the lane with reckless abandon. with l.a. revilla playing only 10 minutes because of a left ankle, the 17-year-old teng took it upon himself to take charge on offense—a mark of a truly special player.

    3. kevin ferrer – ust

    win vs. ue: 16 pts, 4 3fgs, 3 rebs

    newcomer

another young blood makes his power rankings debut, thanks to a breakout game against ue. With jeric teng sitting out due to a knee strain, ferrer shone right on cue. the former uaap juniors mvp tallied a career-high 16 points, spiked by four connections from long distance. he also did the little things like boxing out, hustling back on defense, and pressuring the ball. the lanky kid really has settled down to his supporting role and he’ll only get better as the games pile up.

    4. norbert torres – la salle

win vs. adamson: 12 pts, 13 rebs, 3 asts

    returnee

it seems like double-doubles have become the norm for torres. he more than held his own against adamson’s frontline duo of rodney brondial and eric camson, even outplaying them both. compared to the first games of the season, the big boy from canada is now more patient in the paint and reads double teams better. he’s also effective in the pick-and-roll with his ability to knock outside shots. a little more consistency and la salle will definitely become more dangerous.

    5. j.r. sumido – ue

    loss vs. ust: 20 pts, 5 3fgs, 3 rebs

    newcomer

the only bright spot in ue’s defeat to ust, the southpaw swingman delivered a career-high 20 points. what’s more striking though was his five three-pointers, which kept his team afloat in the game. last year, sumido only made a total of three treys, that’s why he somehow caught the growling tigers off guard. despite the loss, he gave the red warriors something positive to look at, no matter how little it was. for a struggling squad, even the thinnest silver lining is significant.

    AH! AH! AH! AH! AH!

I've been an ardent supporter of Vigil alongside Ferrer, just imagine if these two former MVP's will play like they used to, it won't be impossible that UST will be the team to beat in the next 2 seasons

If both would be given ample playing time and gain confidence, provided they recruit a good PG or one in the roster develops, UST can be a title contender as early as next season

I agree, Vigil has been sidelined due to the deep bench UST has, I think Kim Lo can play PG

my ranking for the past week.

    1. UST - if anyone would have mentioned before the season started that the Tigers would end the first round at the top of the standings, people would think that that person was crazy. even the Tigers would probably not believe him. But here they are, at the top of the standings (tied with Ateneo) after round 1. Guys like Louie Vigil and Kim Lo have stepped up big time in the absence of Jeric Teng. And Jeric Fortuna has shown in that game against Adamson that the Fort of last year is not missing. He can still come up with big games.

    2. Ateneo - imho, the only team that has the "ilista mo na" aura. Sure, the other teams have made it more difficult for them in the first round. But I am sure the boys were confident that even if they were down in the first half, they can still come back in the second half.

    3. DLSU - Jeron Teng is probably a lock for the ROY this year after his 35-point outing vs NU.

    4. FEU - I think the supporters have been extra hard on Romeo with the loss vs Ateneo. Sure, the guy is a ball-hog, but they must remember that his ball-hogging ways have rescued the team from suffering a defeat in their previous games.

    5. NU - undoubtedly underperformed in the first round.

    6. UP - provided a scare vs UST, and finally notched its first win vs UE.

    7. UE - surprised Adamson, but almost squandered the game to the the Falcons. Sumang remains awesome, Santos is slowly getting his groove, and Javier shows flashes of brilliance.

    8. Adamson - lost to UE, then almost upset the Tigers only to drop the game in the dying seconds. Bright spots: Coach Leo remains one of the best tacticians in the league, and Rodney Brondial proves to be a hard worker despite his thin frame.

    ***

MVP after the first round: Karim Abdul

ROY after the first round: Jeron Teng

UAAP SEASON 75 WEEK 6 REVIEW:

*Each weekly review contains updated Team Standings, Team Power Rankings, Player Awards, and Statistical Leaders.

    WEEK 6 TEAM STANDINGS:

    WEEK 6 POWER RANKINGS:
    Let the disagreements begin!

1- Ateneo Blue Eagles: The Blue Eagles had an awful first half against FEU, but more than made up for it with a splendid second half. That’s thanks mainly to their supporting cast (Ryan Buenafe, Juami Tiongson, and JP Erram) stepping up big time. Again, this game exposed how vulnerable the Ateneans can be, but it also showed how they can turn things on at the drop of the hat. And, yes, Buenafe can still take over a game when he wants to. Right now, they just have too many weapons.

2- UST Growling Tigers: The only reason UST dips in these rankings is because it was quite apparent (at least to this UAAP fan) that they might’ve eased off the gas pedal against Adamson. In other words, it looked like they were complacent. They still won that game, albeit by the skin of their teeth, and are now sitting pretty as #1 in the standings. That might actually be dangerous because, again, complacency has a way of creeping in without one even realizing it. Many have tried comparing this team to the one that bagged the 2006 title, but the main difference is this: the 2006 Tigers worked their way up from the bottom, while this 2012 edition is in the completely opposite end of the spectrum. How will UST play now that they’re atop the standings?

3- FEU Tamaraws: The Tams lost a really close game against Ateneo. That’s not only in terms of the final score, but also in terms of team efficiency – Ateneo was 72 and FEU was 71. Damn. That could’ve been such a BIG win if they could’ve closed it out. The key was the real RR Garcia actually showing up. If the former MVP can shoot the lights out on a consistent basis, then the Tams should have a great chance to nab one of the twice-to-beat edges come playoff time. And, yeah, I still believe Terrence Romeo shoots too much – he finished with a -1 efficiency rating against Ateneo mainly because of his SIXTEEN misses (14 from the field and 2 from the line).

4- DLSU Green Archers: Jeron Teng exploded, so did Almond Vosotros, and Norbert Torres continued to battle despite an anemic shooting day. If there’s one thing the Green Archers showed in that double-OT win against NU, it’s this – they are one gritty team. They just won’t quit, and that’s a dangerous sign for the rest of the league. Another dangerous sign? Teng hitting four triples. His shooting coach should get a pay hike soon. If Teng can continue to shoot well from long range, then there might be no stopping him anymore. The only potential pothole is LA Revilla’s status. They need him to be relatively healthy if they want a serious run at the title.

5- NU Bulldogs: The Bulldogs will forever rue those misses from the free throw line in regulation. Five of those misses were from Season 74 MVP Ray Parks. NU could’ve been tied for third now, but instead they sink to fifth spot. This is certainly below the expectations set by a brilliant summer performance. There are some good signs, though. Troy Rosario seems to be the perfect match-up nightmare for opposing coaches, and Emmanuel Mbe continues to be a top-tier slotman. What Coach Eric Altamirano needs is for the other members of his support crew to be more consistent. Guys like Joeff Javillonar, Gelo Alolino, Mark De Guzman, and Denice Villamor really need to raise their games in the second round.

6- UP Fighting Maroons: Despite their win-loss slate, the Maroons ought to feel pretty good about themselves right now. They finally got over the hump by beating UE, and they should now be poised to upset a couple of teams in round two. Cris Ball has blossomed to become one solid big man, while Mark Lopez is like a poor man’s Ray Parks, which is a compliment. The enigma that is Mike Silungan, however, continues to be the barometer. Coach Ricky Dandan needs his most explosive scorer to, well, score if the Maroons are going to finish the season strong.

7- Adamson Soaring Falcons: Their spirited play against the Tigers bump the Falcons up and above the Red Warriors ever so slightly. Rodney Brondial has become one of the best big men in the league, while Eric Camson might have just had the breakout game he needed. Also, Ryan Monteclaro hasn’t proven to be half-bad, especially in terms of three-point shooting. Now if Jericho Cruz can just calm himself down and focus on doing his best Alex Nuyles impersonation.

8- UE Red Warriors: The Reds lost both Week 6 games by double-digits, and, right now, they look every bit the last-placer that their record suggests. Roi Sumang is a top ten player in this league, and Adrian Santos is as solid a big man as they come, but, somehow, things just don’t click for UE. The missing pieces, I think, are Chris Javier and Pedrito Galanza. Coach Jerry Codiñera needs Javier to be the main low post option, while Galanza should be the designated sniper. Santos can take care of the rebounds and be the last line of defense, while Sumang can just be his recklessly wonderful self. IF that happens, then maybe, just maybe, UE can win a couple of games in the second round. The thing is, it just probably won’t.

Note: For those who are interested to know the team rankings in terms of Simple Efficiency Rating, here they are:
