    MS Finance

Anyone here taking this course in UP Diliman. Learned that they already offer part-time. Can someone share how's the program. Class schedule, how demanding. etc. Thanks.

It should be good. It is UP. But as a finance person, you should know that the CFA Charter has better net present value.

Thanks. Are you currently enrolled here? Note that CFA bears more prestige but an MS will be a good refresher before it.

MS, a good refresher for CFA??? Nah!!! CFA is prestigious, yes, because it has global recognition. But MS Fin in UPD is more difficult and more demanding and time consuming.

are you currently enrolled in the program? planning to enroll part time next year. Not sure if I can balance work and this one.

Nope but I know people who took or are currently taking their MSFin in UP.

I'm a CFA candidate. With the level of difficulty of the CFA exams and the standards of the Accounting and Finance department of UP CBA, I can safely say that MS FIN is more challenging.

The Net Present Value raised by New Yorker is a different issue as it really depends on the knowledge of employers on their applicant's qualifications. CFA is globally recognized, that helps you get the job. But I believe that graduate studies is more than that, it gives you staying power. The requirements to get the degree are really daunting unless a school is a diploma mill.

Anyway, baliktad objective naten. I'm finishing my CFA to gain enough credentials to choose a prestigious school for masters in finance abroad (with scholarship sana dahil ako ay isang hamak na ordinaryong mamamayan lang). Hehehe.

haha.. I thought it's the other way around, and I think I cannot afford to pay the exam/review for CFA. I am more ordinaryong mamamayan than you are. While graduate studies will be at the expense of my employer. Since I'm working in Makati, I'll also take into consideration the distance. How about DLSU's MS Comp. Fin. - any comments? Thanks.

May Comp Fin pa ba? I think they replaced it with FinEngg. Anyway, I also know a lot of people, particularly officemates, who are taking FinEngg in LaSalle. Most of them took their undergrad in La Salle also. No feedback. But seeing them in the office, parang hindi sila stressed. Haha.

I think so, they still have the info in their website. I think Comp fin is of GSB (based here in Makati) while Fin Eng is under college of business. Not really interested in Fin Eng. I have the perception that it would be too theoretical and may not complement with my current job.

I think, correct me if I'm wrong, Computational Finance and Financial Engineering are the same. I don't know why La Salle offered Comp Fin and FinEngg. I even don't know their difference. Most mathematical finance programs abroad differ only by names - Mathematical/Computational/Quantitative Finance or Financial Engineering. Different schools just provide different electives (i.e., in Columbia they have majors or concentrations for Fin & Econ, Derivatives, Asset Management, Trading Systems). That's why there is a rumor that Comp Fin will be scrapped out, if it has not been removed yet (check a thread here in PEX regarding that issue).

Regardless, both programs would surely be theoretical since our country is not yet technologically savvy since we are dealing here with high frequency finance. Also, country's regulations regarding various financial innovations is a major roadblock due to the fact that most local banks, including foreign branches of multinational banks, are not yet ready with implementing these complicated products. Heck, even the CFA designation will not be maximized if you are only to work in the Philippines (that's why I'm for less regulation, but with the recent crisis, this is highly doubtful).

I think there are slight differences between the two. At any rate, Financial engineering might be a good substitute if distance, time and the demand of UP MS finance may not allow. Thanks for the advice.

My undergrad is finance at DLSU so i could vouch for the professors there. imo go with DLSU nalang UP is really not known for finance

Hi there! Planning to enroll in MS Finance a few years from now. Saw the course outline and I'm quite impressed. Am not really familiar with Fin Eng of DLS but I got the impression it's 'specialized' and more number-centric.

How lucky can you get! Employer's paying for your graduate studies? Wow.

    Weh??? Asaboy! Haha.

Para saken, you go with the CFAs first because that would put you in companies where you dream to work in/for. Pero sa dami ba naman ng CFA sa mundo ngayon, edging other CFA charterholders is a nice addition, indeed. CFA muna. If you get stuck trying to reach portfolio manager or CFO, MBA na. Opinion lang naman.

Really? But UP is well known for winning finance competitions in the country.

iba kase real world sa academics eh, i dont know a lot of up grads in the banking industry, most of my top bossess (avp up) are either ateneo or dlsu grads. So yeah, UP may be winning competitions but employers still favor dlsu and admu grads

Ang funny. Guys we need to learn to differentiate yung actual competence and yung social perceptions. Yung competitions na yun are from CFA exams that test how well you know finance. They're not merely academic or "theoretical." The perception of the masses that DLSU and AdMU are better in business than UP is tainted with class bias. Yun lang yun. So if people prefer DLSU and AdMU people, that doesn't definitely say that they're better. That only means that they're biased towards getting their own. Which is natural naman, no judgment.

Moreover, do not divorce yung real world sa academics. Academic theory is based on the real world. And remember that good theory is the basis for good practice in the real world. Predominant kasi sa atin yung notion of the separation of the academics/bookish and yung "real world."
