I suggest you guys watch 'Amigo', an American film about the Philippine-American war in the 1900. It features Joel Torre, Rio Locsin, Pen Medina among others and it was shot in Bohol (For fans of the TV show Raising Hope both Lucas Neff and Garret Dillahun are part of this film). John Sayles directed and wrote the film. I watched it last night sa Glorietta and I was impressed, great cinematography and a compelling story.

It will have one week run at the following cinemas:
    • Gateway Cineplex 4
    • Glorietta 4 Cinema 4
    • Midtown Cinema 1
    • Robinsons Galleria Cinema 10
    • SM City Manila 8
    • SM City North Edsa Cinema 5
    • SM Mall of Asia Cinema 5
    • SM Megamall Cinema 11
    • TriNoma Cinema 1
    • SM City Bacoor Cinema 4

Bicycle Thieves (1948, Italy): an impoverished family and the quest for a stolen bicycle. Much has been said and written but it is always worth the attention, the affirmation, and the exaggeration: ONE OF WORLD CINEMA'S BEST.

---------------------Au Revoir, Les Enfant (Goodbye Children, 1988)------------------

Scores a full 10 for me. Simply put, an excellent contemporary drama. It is in the same league as the 400 blows and Tokyo Story. Movies-cum-soap-opera of today pales into insignificance compared to Au revoir les enfant.

    Julien, left, and Bonnet, right.

Louis Malle crafted such an understated drama from his own childhood memories. The subject of war was brought to a different light: the elegant editing, screenplay, and acting appeared so relevant that I could hardly believe I was watching a movie made at the year I was born. Everything was rendered in a starkly modern style.

Au revoir les enfant? Before watching the film, I mulled about the title, and it wasn't difficult to contextualize what that could possibly mean. Yet you'd be compelled to say that to the characters yourself, in the end.

I hand out props to Louis Malle for depicting the Nazi manhunt for Jews in such a way that you'd think of it as a game of hide-and-seek - that is, in a child's point of view. But death creeps into the movie slowly as an ominous force. Even for an abandoned, possibly orphaned boy, he understands, as a jew, that the only way to preserve one's dignity is by quietly submitting oneself to death

the subtitles in this screenshot is a quote coming from the director himself, and I can't help but feel exactly the same way. I'll definitely remember this film for a long time.

    Indeed...

Grabe. This is one of the best revenge flicks I have ever seen. If you're looking for a bloody, fast paced revenge flick then this is not for you. It's totally dark, surreal, psychological thriller that goes inside your skin. SUBLIME performances from the cast, especially Takako Matsu and Yukito Nishii. The direction and cinematography are also top notch. Highly recommended. 10/10

Amarcord (1973, Italy): unorthodox semi-autobiography of director Federico Fellini, 1930's Italy. A vivid and ill-tempered mock of the director's personal youth enriched by adolescent desires and social-political subtexts. Bellissima! 9.
