John Lloyd juggles 3 major projects

MANILA, Philippines – With his string of box-office hits and acting accolades, actor John Lloyd Cruz is certainly living up to his status as the most sought-after actor of his generation with three new projects in the works.

Following the success of his TV series “Imortal” and mega-hit film “Unofficially Yours,” both with actress Angel Locsin as his leading lady, Cruz is set to star in two new films under Star Cinema plus another soap opera with the Kapamilya network.

All-star cast

Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Cruz shared his excitement for his latest film where he will co-star with the biggest names under talent management firm Star Magic, including Kim Chiu, Piolo Pascual, Jake Cuenca, Pokwang, Diether Ocampo and Angelica Panganiban.

“Kakaiba ‘yung experience kasi iba rin ‘yung kung paano ‘yung approach ni direk. Parang it's not the typical shooting experience. Maganda siya,” Cruz said on his arrival from Vietnam, where he shot some scenes with Panganiban.

On working with Panganiban again after co-starring in TV series “Maging Sino Ka Man” in 2007, Cruz said he is looking forward to doing more projects with the “Rubi” star.

“Wala kang hirap na mararamdaman [katrabaho si Angelica] kasi maganda ‘yung mga eksena. Maayos namin nagawa atsaka mukhang maganda naman. Malinaw, madali,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a longer working experience with Angelica. Pagdating ng panahon, siguro a movie together, a full-length movie.”

Miggy-Laida again

Cruz also shared that filming for his latest movie with Pop Star Pincess Sarah Geronimo is already underway. The Cathy Garcia-Molina-directed movie is the third in the Miggy-Laida series after "You Changed My Life" and "A Very Special Love."

“Nag-start na kami [mag-shoot nung pelikula]. Nakaka ilang araw na kami,” Cruz said. “Medyo nagkakapaan pa kami ni Sarah kasi medyo matagal hindi nagkita.”

Cruz also said he is honored to be working on the film with actress Iza Calzado, who recently inked a three-picture deal with Star Cinema as a new Kapamilya.

“It's an honor para makasama ko si Iza Calzado kaagad sa unang pagsabak sa pelikula sa istasyon natin,” he said. “We've been friends for a very long time. Fan din niya ako so natutuwa ako na nagkasama kami sa paglipat niya.”

Excited for Bea

Cruz is also set to work with another long-time friend for his next TV series. The “Imortal” star revealed that filming for his new soap with actress Bea Alonzo is already underway.

“Nagpe-prepare na din ‘yung production, creative at mga artista. In May, pupunta kami sa Vienna, Austria to shoot the pilot. Eighty percent nung pilot sa Vienna,” he said. “I'm very excited na finally may gagawin kami ni Bea. Nae-excite ako sa bago naming batuhan ni Bea. It's been years.”

Cruz and Alonzo last worked together in 2010 for Star Cinema film “Miss You Like Crazy,” and in 2008 for TV series “I Love Betty La Fea.”

Cathy Garcia Molina on John Lloyd Cruz-Sarah Geronimo team-up: ‘May nabago’

Director Cathy Garcia-Molina admitted that the on screen team-up of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo has changed from the time they did You Change My Life in 2009. But on a positive note, she claimed that it would actually add spice to the third movie that they’re currently doing under Star Cinema. “Three years have passed. Parang they have grown apart. Alam mo yun, nag-mature [sila] na magkahiwalay. Sobrang na-e-excite ako makita kung ano na ngayon si Laida Magtalas at Miggy Montenegro three years after [we did our last movie together]. Kasi yung kwento medyo three years after na [yung ipapakita rin namin],” said Direk Cathy in an interview with Push.com.ph.

In spite of the success of her most recent project, Unofficially Yours, the much-admired director admitted that she still gets nervous about creating another film that a lot of viewers can identify with. Expectations run high in light of John Lloyd and Sarah’s “tried and tested” team-up. “Bukod sa Part three yung kukunan, alam natin lahat na ‘pag movie franchise, alam mong hindi papataas, ‘di ba laging may nagpi-fail sa franchise, sa part one, two, and three. Siyempre ayaw natin mangyari yun. Anyway, nandun ulit kami sa stage na nag-iisip kami ng paraan kung paano namin ulit kayo ma-e-entertain at kikiligin kayo sa mga eksena,” referring to the kilig trademarks of A Very Special Love (sun dance) and You Change My Life (power hug).

Direk Cathy was also very vocal about John Lloyd remaining as her favorite actor to date. When told that John Lloyd is at his best whenever they work together in a movie, she humbly replied, “Lloydy na ‘yan e. Magaling talaga siyang artista and proven na kahit sinong i-partner sa kanya, nagwo-work. So it goes to show na hindi talaga umaangkla kung may relasyon or crush mo yung kapareha mo. Proven na [when he worked] with Toni Gonzaga and Angel Locsin, na ‘di kailangan may personal na nangyari sa inyo para mag-work ang pelikula. Tinatanggap na sila bilang artista na they’re just playing a role.”

On the other hand, Direk Cathy agreed that Sarah’s budding romance with Gerald Anderson and her growth as an individual would bring out her maturity in acting. “Siguro, lahat naman ng experience ng isang artista or ng isang tao nakakatulong e, whether good or bad. Three years is three years, malaki ang maitutulong niyan kay Sarah as an actress and as a person.”
