GMA Artists to Grace Philippine National Day in Expo 2012 Yeosu, Korea
    June 8, 2012 by GMA-7

The Kapuso Network, today’s number one broadcast station in the country, lends a helping hand to the Department of Tourism as the latter mounts the country’s participation in Expo 2012.

Kyla and JayR are all set to showcase the Filipino’s world-renowned musicality when they perform at the forthcoming Philippine National Day. According to GMA Network Chairman & CEO, Atty Felipe L Gozon, helping the government mount such events abroad is part of GMA’s “serbisyong totoo” to the Filipino nation. “We must do our share in boosting our image in the global arena. The least we can do is lend our talents to the Expo in Korea.”

The arrangement was recently formalized at a MOA signing at the GMA Network Center. In photo are (l to r): Kyla, JayR, Marivin Arayata (GMA VP for ETV), GMA Network Executive Vice President Felipe S Yalong, Assistant Secretary Domingo Enerio (Department of Tourism) and GMA’s AVP for Corporate Affairs Ma Teresa L Pacis. BEAT CRAZY: The top 5 performances of the PH National Anthem in a Pacquiao fight
    By Edwin P. Sallan, Interaksyon.com · Friday, June 8, 2012 ·

The performance of the Philippine National Anthem is an essential part of every Manny Pacquiao fight.

But with its tricky twists and turns, our very own “Lupang Hinirang” is not an easy road to negotiate.

Like the humbled opponents of the Pambansang Kamao, even the most established singers have crashed and burned trying to deliver a knockout interpretation of the song in a Las Vegas boxing ring.

Those who attempted to sing it with bombastically arranged and ’80s sounding backing tracks like Martin Nievera and Regine Velasquez got the thumbs down for their unfortunate choices.

Those who invested too much emotion the way Arnel Pineda, Geneva Cruz, and Sarah Geronimo did with their over-the-top and ultimately frowned upon readings have been accused of disrespecting an otherwise sacred treasure.

Those who sang it with a certain slang and twang like Zyrene Parsad and YouTube sensation Maria Aragon almost but did not get it quite right.

And those who simply forgot the lyrics like Christian Bautista did in a non-Pacquiao boxing match are probably better off not performing it in public again.

The best versions are, of course, those that were performed a capella and delivered in a simple, no-nonsense straightforward manner with the just the right balance of feel and respect.

As we look forward to 14-year-old Kirby Asunto’s rendition of “Lupang Hinirang” on Saturday night (Sunday morning, Philippine time) before Pacquiao’s encounter with Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, let us look back at the five best versions of the Philippine National Anthem in a Pacquiao bout.

    5. Charice (Pacquiao vs. Mosley, May 7, 2011, MGM Grand Garden Arena)

Sure, Charice sang it in a faster tempo that does not seem much different from the way elementary students sing it daily during flag ceremonies. But Charice’s passionate delivery puts it a notch above average even though it’s noticeable that she did not put her right palm in her chest like she should.

    4. Karylle (Pacquiao vs. Dela Hoya, December 6, 2008, MGM Grand Garden Arena)

She admitted she got nervous when she started singing and it showed. Still, she managed to give a stirring performance of the national anthem. It also didn’t hurt that she sounded very much like her mom minus Zsa Zsa’s seasoned polish. Extra props go to that elegant red terno that she carried so well.

    3. Kyla (Pacquiao vs. Barrera II, October 6, 2007, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino)

As good as her voice is, R & B Princess Kyla is never known to “birit” with the best of them so she wisely resisted the temptation to put her voice range to its limits (i.e. Jennifer Bautista) and made the most of her gifts by singing the national anthem the old fashioned way. The result is a thoughtful version that worked well for her.

    2. La Diva (Pacquiao vs. Cotto, November 14, 2009, MGM Grand Garden Arena)

Like it was sung by angels, this nicely paced version was further enhanced by the soulful harmonies of the all-female vocal group. And even though the trio took their liberties with the final line, they actually pulled it off as it still sounded way better than the other “creative” versions that were not as received well by the public.

    1. Ciara Sotto (Pacquiao vs. Marquez II, March 15, 2008, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino)

Even though she was wrongly credited as “Sierra Soto,” Ciara stands head and shoulders above everyone else with a definitive version of the national anthem sung with effortless grace and flawless timing. If you only have enough space in your iPod for just one version of the national anthem, make it this one.

Best, worst anthem performances in Pacquiao bouts
    ABS-CBNnews.com
    Posted at 06/10/2012 3:25 PM | Updated as of 06/11/2012 11:59 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American teenager Kirby Asunto got the biggest break in her young career when she was chosen to perform the Philippine National Anthem during the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight in Las Vegas on Sunday morning, Manila time.

The 14-year-old from New Jersey joined a list of singers chosen by the Pinoy boxing champ to sing “Lupang Hinirang” during his high-profile matches, which included international Filipino superstars like Charice and Arnel Pineda, as well as lesser known singers.

It’s no guarantee that getting that prime spot in a fight watched by a worldwide audience can translate to a huge career.

Many of the up and coming singers who were given that break failed to capitalize on their exposure, such as TV reality search contestant Jennifer Bautista (Pacquiao-Morales II) and teenager Nicole Angela Judalena (Pacquiao-Diaz).

In fact, singing the national anthem in a Pacquiao fight can even hurt reputations -- as what happened to Martin Nievera, whose performance during the Pacquiao-Hatton bout was criticized by the National Historical Institute (NHI).

The NHI had cited Republic Act 8491, which prescribes that any person who will violate its provisions may be punished by a fine of at least P20,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year.

Perhaps because of NHI’s threats over “improper” renditions of the anthem, such as slowing down the tempo from the original march and belting out some notes, many singers have opted for “safe” renditions, resulting in mostly perfunctory singing, instead of impassioned performances.

Karylle, during the Pacquiao-Dela Hoya bout, was obviously nervous during her performance that she stuttered on the word “watawat,” while Charice (Pacquiao-Mosley) strictly stayed with the marshall tempo, which got the NHI’s thumbs up, but sounded a bit impersonal.

So how did Asunto’s performance on Sunday morning rank?

The teener performed admirably and stayed on pitch throughout the song, although undoubtedly she was upstaed by "American Idol" runner-up Jessica Sanchez, who earned praises for her Whitney Houston-inspired a capella rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner."

Regardless of NHI rules, here are the best and worst performances of “Lupang Hinirang” during Pacquiao bouts.

    Best

Regine Velasquez (Pacquiao vs Fahsan 3K Battery, “Yanig sa Taguig”). The NHI will probably not like the powerful glory note at the song’s end and the slow rearrengement, but this was a vintage Velasquez performance. One of the few renditions that used a backing track, Velasquez employed good dynamics and showed off perfect pitch and when she brought the song to a soaring climax, it was difficult not to be moved.

Sarah Geronimo (Pacquiao-Morales III). Again, the NHI won’t approve of some of the belted parts, but Geronimo, showing off her powerful pipes, imbued her performance with strength of character that drew out patriotic feelings. It was a very confident a capella performance that indeed made you feel proud.

Kyla (Pacquiao-Barrera II). Kyla showed no traces of her R&B leanings in this understated version of the national anthem. But her simplicity was also very heartfelt.

    Worst

Martin Nievera (Pacquiao-Hatton). Even without the scolding from the NHI, this rearrangement was overblown yet confused. Performed with a backing track, there were touches of Yanni at his most orchestral, then abruptly switched to uptempo. Coupled with Nievera’s attempt at the bel canto style of singing, the end-product was just a mess.

Zyrene Parsad (Pacquiao-Margarito). What is worse – belted out glory notes that’s against NHI rules or a rendition that is so bland that it doesn’t inspire anything? Parsad’s blah performance was hardly a rallying point to inspire love for country. It’s more worthy of some local conference but definitely not a prizefight in Vegas.

Jennifer Bautista (Pacquiao-Morales II ). Overall, an embarrassment. First there’s the slow arrangement, which we know by now is frowned upon by the NHI, and the karaoke-like backing track. She also attempted a glory note at the end but instead gave a long sustained off-pitch note. To make things worse, she ended her performance with a misplaced shout out of “Laban, Pacman!”
