    Post All About Rice

    Pinoy’s staple food.

Ilang cups kaya niyo per meal?

Can you last a day without eating rice?
If yes, gaano katagal mo kayang mabuhay na walang rice?

Pag walang rice, ano good substitute? Burger, pizza, pasta et al?

Anong luto ng rice gusto niyo? Variety? Kakanin gawa sa rice?

Trivia: Do you know that the surname “Rizal” is a derivative of rice? Originally 'Ricial', meaning 'the green of young growth' or 'green fields' perhaps, just like the rice fields.

Trivia: Jose Rizal's house was painted green recently by the National Historical Institute just because his middle name meant like "field of rice ready for harvesting."

By the way, June 19, 2011 is Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday.

    Post Why Pinoys Love Kanin?

MANILA, Philippines - Pinoys are very meticulous when it comes to our staple food so that whenever we are served rice, that is cooked just right, we relish it with gusto and say, “kanin pa lang ulam na!”

We have champorado or silog meals for breakfast, kakanin or rice cakes for dessert, kaning-lamig for merienda and rice with our nutritious one-dish meals. We have paella for New Year and puto bumbong and bibingka at Christmastime; we enjoy arroz caldo when it’s rainy, and we add pinipig or rice flakes to halo-halo during summer.

An individual’s appetite is measured by the amount of rice consumed in one sitting — good-tasting rice makes one a hearty, happy diner! When there’s little viand to go around, we won’t complain as long as there’s extra rice, and many Pinoys say that they don’t feel full when they skip rice during the day, even for just one meal.

Some like their grains a little glutinous, not chalky; others like it naturally fragrant or they add pandan as it cooks to give it a mild, delicious aroma; others like it long-grained, and so on. When taken in moderation, rice is actually good for the body because it supplies energy-giving carbs that fuel the body throughout the day, and is a source of protein, minerals, vitamins and fiber. Discriminating consumers are willing to buy more expensive rice varieties or organic rice.

If you’re one of many Pinoys who won’t last a day without rice, be proud, because the starchy grain that is very much part of your identity is considered an important agricultural produce that feeds a multitude of the world’s population.

Nuts, veggies, fruits, lean protein, etc.

clean, rub against your palm... soak it up in water for a couple of minutes, at least 15mins.
then cook it over the stove.. you should turn the fire off just nearly before the water completely evaporates/absorbed by the rice... turn off, remove from stove to prevent residual heat from over cooking... let it sit on its own until cooked thru. that's the gist of it. water:rice ratio can be googled on net. usually if you buy an entire bag there are printed instructions in some.
never had the chance to cook it in a rice cooker, will be happy to hear about it.

Where you at? Baka me mga alam kasi magka-iba kayo ng lugar.

Funny, but I have to check what variety we cook at home. (Milagrosa - Rooster Brand - Thailand). Sa Pinas, I grew up not buying rice kasi me "pots and pots of land" kami.

One of these days, I'll dare myself.

rice isn't that much of a staple as it used to be. carbs are now the enemy of the modern day filipino.

plus there're other sources of starch nowadays.

Haka-haka lang, more or less, 97million ang Pinoy ngayon?

Tsaka by choice ba yan o dahil prohibitive na yung cost?

When I was living in Florida for a couple of months, I only had the chance to eat rice once! So I went around a couple of states where there are Filipino restos, I luckily found one in LA. They even had brazo de mercedes and leche flan!!!
Funny thing, when I got back to the Philippines, I didn't have the desire to rice. I would eat steak and chicken with grits!
But I eat rice with sinigang and bulalo and all those ulam with sabaw because that's the only way to eat it!!!
