^^^ But the situation envisaged in those Vatican II documents is not atheism, but rather non-theism.

There is a big difference between them.

Atheism is a willfull and knowing rejection of God and denying of His existence.

Non-theism how ever is non knowledge of God through ignorance, mistake, and other causes not attributable to the non-theist.

The former is a cardinal mortal sin that separates the atheist from the grace and salvation of God for ever, unless there is a valid repentance done while still living here on Earth.

The latter how ever is not a cardinal mortal sin, and hence can still be saved by the utter mercy and love of God, and thus has hope.

This thread talks about the former: atheism, which is willfull and knowing denial and rejection of God and His existence.

And atheism, being a state of cardinal mortal sin, will merit eternal damnation and separation from God and His grace and salvation to all who exercise or profess it.

So technically this man is not an atheist since he believes in God. It is more probable that he is an agnostic theist since he believes in God but he is just not sure if he exists.

I answer the confused query of this thread in the affirmative.

The goodness of an act does not just depend on the very act it self, but also on the circumstances surrounding such act.

Any "good" act that is done while in the state of mortal sin is nothing and avails the performer of the act nothing.

Being an atheist, which is believing and affirming to one's self and to others that there is no God and that God does not exist, is a mortal sin, a cardinal sin against the glory and majesty of God.

As such, any act done by an atheist while in the state of mortal sin avails that atheist no thing, and such act is nothing and without merit in the eternal eyes of Him who beholds all things.

Hence, no matter how good the act may be, the act will only benefit all those who are good and in the state of grace while the act was done: that is, the act will merit and will benefit only those persons who are affected of it while they are in the state of grace, and not those persons who are in the state of mortal sin.

An atheist is in an active state of mortal sin, and as such is in the estate where the effects and merits of good acts can not be efficacious.

The goodness of acts can only be merited and can only be effective to those entities who are ready to merit such goodness at the time of the commission of the act: an atheist being in a mortal estate and in a state mortal sin when the act is committed can not profit nor can merit from the good act committed during that time.

Hence, all the acts of an atheist are futility, and will not merit such atheist before the bar and Judgement Seat of the Lord Jesus Christ at the Last Judgement of the living and the dead.

This is so because the acts of rejecting God and rejecting His existence are all mortal sins that separate the soul of the actor from the grace of God for ever and ever, unless a valid repentance is performed and effected by the atheist actor before his death here on Earth during his mortal life.
