Knights take down Cardinals in testy tiff
Saturday, 2 July 2011
THE Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights scored the first upset of the young season, shutting down the Mapúa Institute of Technology Cardinals, 76-65 in the last game of the triple-header that opened NCAA Season 87 last July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Stingy defense by the Knights held the Cardinals to just two field goals in the payoff period, creating a 22-13 fourth quarter point disparity that allowed Letran to build on their two-point lead after three periods. “Puwede naman tayo magupset and we proved it kanina. We outhustled and outdefended them,” said a beaming Letran coach Louie Alas after the win.
Kevin Alas was on top of his game, scoring 22 points while also adding five rebounds, six assists and four steals in what he described as “a surprise win.” Jam Cortes added 10 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and hauled down 11 boards, while rookie transferee Kevin Racal added nine markers.
The two sides played back and forth basketball for the first three quarters before Letran tightened the screws and began scoring off turnovers. The Knights scored 10 straight in the fourth to forge ahead, 64-52, before the Cardinals got on board at the 5:09 mark thanks to two charities by Mike Parala. They didn’t get their first field goal – a dunk by Fil-Palestinian rookie Yousef Taha – until the three-minute mark of the quarter. A minute later, cramps struck graduating point guard Allan Mangahas, and the remaining guys on the floor just couldn’t orchestrate a Mapúa comeback.
Mangahas led all scorers with 23 points, including 15 in the third. He didn’t get much support though beyond Taha’s double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Banal had eight, but six of those came when the game was all but decided.
A near-fracas with 27 seconds left in the encounter marred the game. Kevin Alas streaked from one end of the court to the other to score on a fancy looking layup while avoiding the outstretched hands of Taha. On the inbounds, Taha appeared to have hit Alas with the ball, resulting in players from the nearby Letran bench jumping to their feet to support their teammate. The referees then separated the players and assessed technicals on both Alas and Taha. Letran forwards Jun-Jun Alas and Jamil Gabawan were ejected for entering the playing court from off the bench.
The physical nature of the Letran defense sent the Cardinals to the line 41 times, but Mapúa converted on just 24 trips, leaving a lot of potential points on the table. Letran was similarly inconsistent, shooting 16-of-28 from the stripe, but made up for it with 26 turnover points to just 13 by Mapúa. W5
Letran 76 – K. Alas 22, Cortes 10, Racal 9, Mendoza 6, Belorio 6, Espiritu 5, Dysam 5, Almazan 4, J. Alas 4, Gabriel 2, Cruz 2, Cudal 1, Lituania 0, Pantin 0
Mapúa 65 – Mangahas 23, Taha 10, Banal 8, Parala 7, Nimes 6, Ranises 4, Stevens 2, Sarangay 2, Pascual 2, Chien 1, Cantos 0, Ighalo 0
Quarter scoring: 12-15, 30-29, 54-52, 76-65
it looks like the Cardinals' still meet their waterloo in the form of 4th quarter execution. I hope they get to address this problem early in the season if we are to go far in the tournament. nice game for Mangahas though. Also, Taha must keep his emotions in check, lest he be caught next time and be suspended. Mapua needs him badly on the court as he is their their most decent post threat. also, a suspension may render him ineligible to win some of the individual awards at season's end if he qualifies for them, which is a waste if ever it happens (ineligibility).
bawi tayo next game. Viva Mapua!
deep on bench..but it does'nt necessarily mean that they can't be
beaten..and let's give it to the Knights..hope they could build
something big after this victory!!!
Thanks Clarkent, for the play by play update !!
Taha was suspended for throwing the ball at Alas. All hope for post season awards just went down the drain. Malas.
madevelop dapat ni TAHA yung Post-Move nya, yung back-down ala shaq. Kasi napansin ko, pag nasa poste na siya, hindi na siya gumagalaw, naghihintay nalang sa mga cuts sa ilalim, kahit bantay nya maliit.
Pero sympre 1st game lang yan,
may naka pansin ba na palaging bini bigyan ng ref ng pointers si taha when making his FT., in fact me violation sya nag explain yung ref,
Kelan next game ng mga Angry Birds?
