Laranas veers from Asian scare tactics

YAM Laranas ("Sigaw," "The Echo," "Patient X") is back to spook the audience. The horror happens on "The Road."

The director, best known for the 2005 Richard Gutierrez-Angel Locsin project, "Sigaw," shares that his new film’s premise hinges on something disturbing but terribly familiar to Pinoys – neglected children.

"When kids are abused, ‘pag ‘yung mga bata ninineglect, walang love, nagkakaroon ng criminal minds ‘yan," he declares.

No, it is by no means biographical. The director relates that he had a happy childhood, being his lola’s favorite. His inspirations were mostly crime stories that hog tabloids’ headlines. And although it may seem that he has a fascination for darkness, he is also enthralled by light.

"We are four boys in the family. When I was growing up in Davao, time ng puro blackout sa Mindanao nun. Ang mga laruan namin were shadow play, shadow puppets. Puro ganun. Kaya masarap mag imagine," he explains. "Kaya siguro nadala ko. In fact kaya na in love ako sa cinematography dahil sa shadow and light."

"The Road," he says, is a "classic ghost story" as opposed to his last, "Patient X," which features a reinterpretation of the aswang.

"Naisip ko baka hindi talaga ako bagay sa creatures so I go back to my comfort level, gusto ko mas psychological."

It is a ghost story, but not an Asian horror movie. Laranas says the story, written with Aloy Adlawan, was decidedly bereft of such Asian horror staples as long-haired girl ("The Ring"), pale-faced kid ("The Grudge"), and the like.

Laranas believes that the audiences have had their share of these elements. "I’m thinking not just for the audience here but for the international audiences. Kahit umpisahan natin dito sa Pilipinas, ang dami na nilang nakitang Asian horror movies, na may mahabang hair, mga batang maputla, parang, for me, with respect to the audience, parang tama na. Sawa na sila dyan. Uulitin mo pa?" he says emphatically.

He admits: "May listahan kami – no long haired woman, no pale skilled little girl, no grabbing under the bed, lahat ng nagawa na [hindi na naming gagawin].

"We also then make sure the scares are organic and grounded to the story.

"We treid our very very best kami nila Aloy Adlawan na wag na wag na, wag nang ganyan. Ibahin naman," he further says.

The thriller spans three decades and follows what happens during the investigation on the disappearance of three teens. It was shot in Rizal. The movie’s haunted path is in the town of Teresa.

"The story is told backwards. It’s told in reverse, na kapag napanuod ng tao, kumbaga sa first story may mga tanong, pagdating sa second ayun may sagot. Tapos sa third story, everything is answered.

"Madali siyang intindihin. Hindi high brow na paatras ang kwento.

"I think it will appeal across the board. I don’t want to underestimate ‘yung masa. Maiintindihan nila. Matutuwa sila.

The GMA Films backed feature, showing on November 30, has Kapuso stars Derrick Monasterio, Louise delos Reyes, Barbie Forteza, Rhian Ramos, TJ Trinidad, Alden Richard, Renz Valerio, Marvin Agustin and Carmina Villaroel. Original score was made by award-winning Swedish composer Johan Söderqvis ("Let the Right One In"). By Gie Trillana

R-13 ang MTRCB rating nito. salpukan sila ng SC movie nina Sarah at Gerald na Won't Last A Day Without You na may GP rating ata from MTRCB.

Ang tanong kung kikita ba ito or same ROAD as other GMA films?

Dalawang magkasunod na mega blockbuster hits nalabas ng Star Cinema at inde malayo maging three in a row with the upcoming Gerald-Sarah movie.

Mukhang maganda ang storya nito, I would like to see it become a box office hit.

In my opinion, masyadong commercialized ang Star Cinema, naturally magiging blockbuster talaga mga movies nila. But then, meron maraming movies na hindi mainstream pero good quality films. Basta, ako I'm watching The Road, magblockbuster man o hindi.

"Iyong character ko, kapag napanood ninyo, you will really fear for the character.

"Pero pag work na, work talaga.

AND TAKE NOTE, they have been advertising this movie for two months already

but anyway, im still watching this kahit gma ito. its because im a perennial fan of horror movies mapa hollywood o local lang. when it comes to movies, number one on my list ang horror.
