    Koyomi,

The news content of IBC 13's late night news isn't related with AKTV anymore. Hence, whatever comes out from the news has no affiliation with Mediaquest's purchase of blocktime hours on IBC 13. What we see on the IBC news are products of the government network people.

To answer your question though, yes, their sports news always feature the results of the PBA games shown that day.

But got a feeling Aktv will stay as Sports network.. TV5 or gma would remain.. with the one would cater the different market...

PBA finals needed to be in GMA no if no buts

GMA has primetime slots alloted for the teleseryes. Kung may PBA sa GMA, dapat Sunday kasi pangit ang shows nila on that day. Even the Tagalized James Bond movies GMA airs on Sundays stink.

If I may add, Jay, IBC's late night newscast is not part of AKTV anymore. Tapos na ang airtime ng AKTV kapag nakapasok na ang news ng IBC which is under that station.

It'll come. Once the GMA7 deal is consummated, I expect Mediaquest to drop their blocktime hours with IBC 13 since they already own two VHF networks (GMA and TV5) and two UHF networks (AKSYON TV and HYPER). They will use either of the VHF networks to become a sports network (TV5 would appear to be the more logical choice) that's intended for a niche market. GMA will bring in the revenue though and they will strengthen its programming further to ensure that they remain competitive, if not, better in the ratings, against rival ABS-CBN.

But all these will come. There is a need though to rationalize capital expenditures especially since they aren't exactly earning from the PBA coverage. But as their sports network becomes bigger in their effort to collar all the major sports events worldwide (they already have Wimbledon, Australian and the US Open of tennis, the UFL, the English League, the London Olympics, primary boxing promotions except those from Top Rank, the PBA, the NCAA and the D-League, WWE Smackdown, etc), it won't be long before they firmly establish themselves as the premium sports network in the country - better than Studio 23, better than Balls...

It'll take some time. But it'll come.
Jay, what channel will air the PBA if Mediaquest drops its tie-up with IBC? TV5? GMA? Or News TV?

  6. #1606
silly mistake if they would drop tv5 san na yun show ni Willie LOL even if its losing its still has the 15 % of the tv market share maybe 15 times better than AKTV

the weekend primetime of GMA is so free very free from late afternoon onwards..the main audience of PBA and telenovelas are the ordinary people and they will watch no matter what..eh yun ang pinapalabas nila eh

I wonder who the broadcast panel would be this season. I'm expecting most would be retained after a successful first season by AKTV.

    Here's the lineup:

Anchors - Mico Halili, Magoo Marjon, Charlie Cuna, Chiqui Reyes, Rado Dimalibot, Jolly Escobar (for provincial games)
Analysts - Jason Webb, Quinito Henson, Jojo Lastimosa
Guest Analysts: Richard Del Rosario, Ronnie Magsanoc
Courtside Reporters: Erika Padilla, Jessica Mendoza, Sel Guevara

I have no problem with Mico and Magoo sharing the stellar billing as AKTV's Big Two. They've proven it already, especially Magoo who suddenly came out of the limelight and established himself as one of the premier stars of AKTV. With his baritone voice coupled with his ability to come out with catchy lines, Marjon has established himself as one of the best in the biz this early. Halili on the other hand, is a regular staple and would always be in a PBA game as he's the face of AKTV Center. There's no doubting Halili being the top brass of the pack and he has proven this immeasurably over the years, dating back from his MBA coverage days.

Cuna is also expected to be retained. It would be a terrible injustice to the viewing fans if he's not. He's the third best anchor out there - does his things very professionally and you won't expect him to be too overly emotional and "shrieky" when covering the games. Just as it's supposed to be done. Perhaps the best person to be compared to him would be Vitto Lazatin, the guy who handles the coverage with so much professionalism and control without necessarily resorting to playing up the emotions. Perhaps this may be the reason why he remains "under the radar" simply because he gets the job done without aplomb and less fanfare. I sure hope the AKTV producers take notice of Cuna and give him better opportunities, instead of the usual Wednesday first game coverage. A Friday primetime or a Sunday coverage would be fitting for someone of Cuna's caliber.

Chiqui Reyes is a bit iffy. I don't know if AKTV took stock of his "bengga" quips but these are definitely off flavored. Apart from the "benggas," I think Reyes is struggling to put himself in a position where he would be believable and have authority - the same qualities that Cuna commands. He may be given a couple of assignments here and there but I don't expect him to be part of the regular rotation.

Dimalibot adds a different dimension in the coverage since he comes off as the most appealing to the masses. I don't know if this is what AKTV really wants but personally, I'd rather see Rado handling the AKTV Center chores more often compared to the coverage panel at the venue. I would still prefer a Taglish coverage but retaining a certain level of elitism - something that Marjon, Halili and Cuna exude. Dimalibot is the extreme here as his style is more appropriate to the radio coverage or as courtside reporter. Nonetheless, we might still see him once in a while alongside Escobar who're expected to do the provincial games.

For the analysts, Henson and Webb are virtual shoo-ins. They've been there and done that and like Halili, are staples in AKTV. Lastimosa might be retained - he's not the most articulate guy around who can speak volumes in a short span of time but you have to somehow give it to the guy who can speak sensibly and actually discuss how a player thinks in a given situation. Jolas' problem, aside from the fake twang, is his penchant to relate to himself in the given situation - a virtual no-no unless this was asked from you by your anchor. Lastimosa can articulate certain things that can be valuable information - like how Tim Cone's mind works, like how players handle pressure-packed situations, etc. This works for Lastimosa and which is why he's acceptable in the coverage - the content is so much better than the manner of how things are said.

The tandem of Mico Halili and Jason Webb is still the best for me.

But I agree, AKTV should give Charlie Cuna more opportunities.

more Mico Halili at the venue please..

Nagiging trying hard to be funny na sya minsan sa AKTV Center..

  19. #1619
    Hindi lang minsan.

Si Magoo nalang yung ilagay sa AKTV Center tapos si Mico sa venue.

Mico's perfect for AKTV Center. He's the best host out there while Magoo may be the best play-by-play coverage we have today, and I'm including Sev Sarmenta, Ed Picson and Boom Gonzales in this list. Halili's ideal for AKTV Center because he makes his guests extremely comfortable and get them to talk more than usual. That's not an easy thing to do, especially since their guests normally are players who're not fond of talking too much. It's not like every player is a Crisano or a Hatfield who would talk even when not asked to.

Marjon, on the other hand, is simply at his element when covering the games. He has the unique talent of raising the crescendo of his voice when needed and making the coverage even more exciting, particularly during the waning seconds of the game. He had exceptional sound bytes when SMART-Gilas won the Jones Cup, doing that while not even in the Taiwan stadium. His timing is impeccable, his tone of voice just perfect, and his vocabulary rich with idioms and sensible analogies.

AKTV's threesome of Halili, Marjon and Cuna definitely topples ABS's anchor troika of Boom Gonzales, Eric Tipan and Anton Roxas by a mile. Boom is their main man, yet, he probably will fall only in the Top 5 of best anchors in the Philippines today (Marjon, Halili, Picson, Sarmenta and Gonzales) but Tipan and Felix may wind up in the bottom 5. That's the kind of discrepancy that ABS has when they cover the UAAP. With AKTV, you get consistency with Webb and Lastimosa's acerbic tongues, Richard Del Rosario's gifted wit and art of self-deprecation, and Ronnie Magsanoc's conversationalist and listener-friendly style teaming up with the top anchors like Halili, Marjon and Cuna.
