madami lang talaga inggit kay boom......

but at least his weeknights sports news program on balls has ads support......

  2. #1002
I rather have Anton Roxas kaysa kay Boom Gonzales

boom still one of the worst commentators sa ABSCBN

In fairness to Chiqui Reyes, I think he's good too because he's versatile in both tagalog and english. Parang hirap pa si Boom and TJ sa tagalog so I don't think they can carry the AKTV PBA coverage. Kung sa Solar dati, puede sila.

    Chiqui Reyes good?

TJ Manotoc tried speaking some Tagalog when he covered the PBA for Viva TV and ABC 5.

    1. Boom Gonzales
    2. Noel Zarate
    3. Mico Halili
    4. Sev Sarmenta
    5. Charlie Cuna
    6. Ed Picson
    7. Magoo Marjon
    8. Richard Del Rosario
    9. Bill Velasco
    10. Jude Turcuato

Since these guys are presenters or anchors, what we expect from them is how they carry the coverage. The substance will obviously be provided by the analysts or commentators. This is the area where we're sorely lacking here, whether at ABS-CBN or AKTV or Solar Sports. The good analysts that we have are those that are regarded as "guests" only, because of their association with existing PBA teams. These include:

    1. Chot Reyes
    2. Tim Cone
    3. Alex Compton
    4. Norman Black
    5. Ryan Gregorio
    6. Yeng Guiao
    7. Ronnie Magsanoc
    8. Andy Jao

    and a couple of regulars:

    8. TJ Manotoc
    9. Jason Webb
    10. Mark Molina

Unfortunately, I can only name Boom and Bill and TJ and Mark as the premier talents of ABS. ABS' packaging is very good, and since they cover the games in English, they actually create a very good first impression. But ever since the league began in 1975, I've always been particular to what I'll learn from the broadcast panel more than how they sound like, or how they're funny, or how much stats they produce during the game. Which explains why while Eric Tipan has a very good voice, I still find him one of the worst anchors around because of his inability to carry the coverage. Magoo, despite all the critics that he has here in this fora, is actually much better because of his ability to bring out the best from his partner. Chiqui Reyes' style is definitely mass-based and while I do have concerns with his "bengga" approach, if you actually listen to him, you know that the guy knows the game. The problem is that this goes unnoticed because of his propensity to try to make the coverage more interesting. For all his faults though, I'd prefer Reyes over Tipan.

There are very solid stats guys as well. Quinito Henson is most known for this, but then, I don't want the analyst to give me figures which anyone can pick up from the Commissioner's Office. I need an analyst who will tell me the intricacies of the game, break it down to different perspectives, and anticipate the moves of both teams playing. Since Henson is a staple in the PBA and is needed by practically every PBA coveror because of his reputation, then fans can actually be more forgiving to him owing to his status.

There are funnymen out there - guys like Del Rosario, Jolly Escobar, among others. Mico Halili may also be counted as another funny guy who can take the licks as well as he delivers them. No one can beat the legendary Joe Cantada though, as he has established the meterstick to what excellent broadcasting is all about. But I can like funny anchors like Halili and Del Rosario but disdain other trying-to-be funny guys as well. It takes a lot of gift and skills to come out humorous when covering the games - if you don't have it, don't force it. That's all it is.

While channel surfing earlier, I actually was more partial to AKTV's coverage compared to Studio 23's. Both were obviously done in the studio so no panel had the advantage in terms of vantage point. While Gonzales was at his usual impressive self, he cannot carry Chris Soler well. Soler came out very flat several times, and there were several occasions when Gonzales had to be the one dissecting the players themselves. Statements like "people may conveniently ignore Monfort but he's actually the key guy at Ateneo and was responsible for carrying them to several close wins," or something to that effect. While this was a statement that should have come from the analyst like Soler, all I heard from Soler as his reply was a wimpy "yeah, that's true."

On the other hand, you can see the chemistry between Webb and Marjon. Webb can even correct Marjon on the spot, owing to their familiarity to each other, when they were comparing Hodges and Ellis. Webb corrected Marjon's point, saying that what he mentioned was Hodges being the more "athletic" player than Ellis. Marjon caught on fast and was able to extricate himself well, even citing Webb's observations.
Jay, Magoo and Jason are more familiar with Ellis and Hodge because they are playing in the PBA D League, which is covered by AKTV.

I like your opinions. A lot of people are criticizing the AKTV PBA coverage, but it's nice for you to notice its strengths.

TJ Manotoc has shown some signs of improvement in his tagalog because of his exposure in TV Patrol where he sometimes does FRs in sports. But what amazes me is Patricia Hizon. She speaks straight English when she was in Solar and she is trying hard enough now to do the same thing in Tagalog.

oo nga e, walang kwenta ang mga report ng mga sideline reporter this conference. kung iccompare mo sa coverage last season pag nag report sila e may kinalaman sa on going game, unlike now parang ang showbiz ng report nila. like for example yung shoes collection ni Marcio Lassiter and yung pag plank ni Allado last game. dati yung mga ganyan bagay e pag halftime break ginagawa e.

It's nice to see Patricia learning how to speak Tagalog on the air. AKTV is trying to reach out to the masses by using purely Tagalog on its PBA coverages.

I hope to see Pat also doing some games for AKTV. And more importantly, teach the courtside reporters the right way of doing courtside reporting.

I am still wanting for more on AKTV. I watch the game live on both Alaska vs Shopinas & Bmeg vs Ginebra @ the Big Dome where I seated on Upper Box A near the camera. I only noticed 4 times the graphics of the players taking FreeThrows, still a very far cry from FIBA & past PBA coverages. Consistency needs to be addressed at this juncture.

Hope Vitto & the AKTV staff would address to this swiftly.

Bogs Adornado taking his free throws with game stats on. Its a U-Tex-Crispa game probably early 1980's. Shame on AKTV. 1980's pa lang, SOP na yung stats pag may nagpi-free throw. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!

Eh di dapat lagay nila sa graphics habang nag freethrow yung player is kung single ba or latest chismis sa player or picture ng girlfriend/asawa ng player

That is why "hindi pwede yung pwede na!" is a powerful statement of Sir Bobong Velez when PBA was at his arm for 2 decades. That is why hall of famer na siya *****. Sabi nga sa AD Congress, "Change the game". So why not ibalik yung stat line na yun, very simple thing to do at alam kung kayang-kaya ng AKTV yan..

  20. #1020
