With back to wall and sword to stomach, the early guess here for the Suns' draft choice would be Tristan Thompson. The Suns need size but they also need upside more than immediate help. Thompson has the ability to be a more well-rounded player than Kenneth Faried or Bismack Biyombo and has a higher ceiling than Markieff Morris. He would be able to help in the short-term as a rim protector with his 7-1 wingspan and shot-blocking instincts. The rest would need development, particularly on offense although he does have some post-up ability and is athletic enough to finish on fastbreaks and grasp the pick-and-roll. Blanks probably has a firm feel for who Thompson is as fellow Longhorns but all indications are that Thompson is a high-character, hard-working 20-year-old.

Suns president to leave organization

PHOENIX (AP)—Phoenix Suns president and chief executive Rick Welts is leaving the team for personal reasons four months after he became the first senior sports executive to openly acknowledge he was gay.

Welts said in an interview Friday night that he plans to relocate to northern California to be with his partner.

“It’s an opportunity probably for the first time for me to align my personal and professional lives,” he said.

Welts will end his work with the Suns on Sept. 15 with nine months remaining on his contract.

He said he is entertaining several suggestions that he write a book.

“I certainly have a lot of interesting offers on that front,” Welts said. “That certainly is something that’s on the agenda.”

The 58-year-old former NBA front office executive also would like to return to work for a professional sports franchise somewhere in the area where he makes his new home.

“I’m not ready to go play golf or go on a speaking tour,” Welts said. “I definitely feel I have a lot left to give to the professional sports industry.”

He wanted to shoot down any notion that he was being pushed out the door by the Suns, praising the support he has received from team owner Robert Sarver.

“I think amicable is probably an understatement,” Welts said of his leaving the franchise.

He said both he and Sarver were concerned that some might have a misperception that, because of the timing, the Suns wanted him to leave.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Welts said. “From the time I made my announcement in May, the Suns, and Robert in particular, have been unbelievably supportive.”

He said that he and Sarver had just spoke again by telephone to thank each other.

Sarver said in a news release that the business side of the organization will report to general counsel Jason Rowley as the team searches for a new president. Sarver thanked Welts for “his tireless work on behalf of the Suns.”

Lon Babby remains the Suns’ president of basketball operations.

Welts joined the Suns in 2002 as president and had the additional title of CEO the past two seasons. He announced in May that he was gay.

He said his life since then has been “fascinating” and that he intended to do more work to promote the cause of “treating everyone equally.”.

Welts began his NBA career as a ball kid for the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. He worked for 17 years in the NBA front office, rising to the position of executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

with this development, jared dudley will get more exposure and playing time not knowing that probably this will be his last season playing easy offense since nash is on his last year of his current contract.

another development waiting to see is grant hill, will the guy just move to another team?

bottom line is the suns is a mess after brian colangelo left the team for good. sarver is a d!ck he@d who just had that ability of making a city hate the team so quick even after getting to a conference finals appearance.

Suns agree to contract with Sebastian Telfair

The seemingly never-ending search for a backup point guard in Phoenix has led to Sebastian Telfair.

Arizona Sports 620's John Gambadoro reports the Suns have agreed to a one-year contract worth between $1.5 and $2 million with the 26-year-old former lottery pick.

Telfair was originally drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 13th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, and has also played for the Celtics, Timber Wolves, Clippers and Cavaliers in his seven NBA seasons.

With career averages of 7.8 points and 3.8 assists per game, Telfair will be asked to lead the Suns' second unit when starter Steve Nash gets a rest.

According to Gambadoro, the Suns like Telfair's on the ball defense and ability to push the ball.

And, in a completely unrelated note, Telfair is a cousin of former Sun Stephon Marbury.

Hill agreed today to re-sign with the Suns for a one-year, $6.5 million contract. The Suns increased the offer from $5 million to $6.5 million on Thursday with Hill being pursued by New York, Chicago, San Antonio and the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Spurs offered him two years and the Clippers offered him more money but the Knicks' and Bulls' one-year offers were tempting because of the quality of teams and Hill's relationship with Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni.

The Suns considered Hill their top free agency priority and showed it in spending on Hill, who is the second oldest player in the league at 39 (by a day to Kurt Thomas). Hill has been a bargain for the Suns, making $10.1 million over the past four years as a productive starter and one of the top defenders in the league.

His return was essential to the Suns' pursuit of defensive improvement and the happiness of Steve Nash in the last year of his contract. The Suns also want Hill's leadership influence on the rest of the team and it is believed he could have a long-term role with the organization beyond his retirement as a player.

Hill averaged 13.2 points last season, his best scoring season as a Sun, while covering every top opposing player from point guards Chris Paul and Deron Williams to swingmen LeBron James and Kevin Durant to power forwards Blake Griffin and Amar'e Stoudemire. He shot 48.4 percent from the field and missed only two games. Hill has missed three games in the past three seasons.

Phoenix Suns to trade Mickael Pietrus, waive Vince Carter

The Suns have agreed to trade swingman Mickael Pietrus and cash to Toronto for a conditional second-round pick but the deal is pending a physical.

Pietrus underwent minor right knee surgery in July after the French national team declared him unable to play. Pietrus also missed the final 12 games of the Suns season because of a quadriceps-tendon strain near the same knee.

Pietrus is in Toronto today for the physical. He would be an ideal fit into the international look that Bryan Colangelo has pursued since leaving Phoenix to take over the Raptors' basketball operations.

The Suns also would have to send about $1 million to Toronto for the Raptors to take on Pietrus' $5.3 million salary in the last year of his contract. It is possible the Suns would never receive the Toronto pick because of the conditions placed on it.

Pietrus, a strong defender with 3-point range, had not reported to Phoenix this month and neither the team or Pietrus seemed comfortable with his fit with the Suns after he came in the December trade with Orlando.

Signings and league business can commence at noon and the Suns will waive Vince Carter soon after, therefore having to only pay the guaranteed $4 million portion of his $18 million salary.

Shannon Brown (one-year, $3.5 million) and Sebastian Telfair (one year, $1.5 million with a partial second-year guarantee) can also sign their contracts with the Suns this afteroon.

Phoenix Suns waive Vince Carter, Gani Lawal

The Suns waived Vince Carter and Gani Lawal today.

Carter's waiver was planned since the time they acquired him nearly a year ago. His contract's final year was worth $18 million but only $4 million of it was guaranteed. The Suns extended the deadline to waive him in June to delay the $4 million payment.

Carter, 34, averaged 13.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 51 games with the Suns, starting 41 of them. He was acquired with Marcin Gortat and Mickael Pietrus from Orlando on Dec. 18 for Jason Richardson, Earl Clark and Hedo Turkoglu.

Lawal became a victim of the Suns' depth at power forward, where they have Channing Frye, Hakim Warrick and rookie first-round draft pick Markieff Morris. A portion of Lawal's salary would have become guaranteed if he had made the training camp roster.

Lawal, who has been playing in Poland, underwent knee surgery at the start of the year after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and partially tore his medial collateral ligament in practice. He had made one appearance with the Suns for two minutes. Lawal, 23, was the final move made by the previous Suns regime when it drafted him 46th overall in the 2010 draft.
