The beginning of the end for Android?
3/14/2012 - forbes.com
Android has been able to capture a majority share of the smartphone market by targeting budget smartphone customers and by being available globally in a variety of options for a variety of customers. However, it has had a series of problems – fragmentation being one of the most serious ones.
If Apple and Microsoft both start extracting a patent licensing fee from Android device manufacturers, it could add up to $15 to $30 per device, which makes the “free” Android OS much more expensive than Windows Phone by Microsoft.
Windows Phone not only offers a uniform experience unencumbered by fragmentation, but it is also backed heavily by Microsoft and offers solid integration with the Windows OS and Xbox. With the impending launch of Windows 8 for tablets, it could become the platform of choice for device manufacturers wanting to offer a complete universe of devices unified by Windows – notebooks, tablets and smartphones – to customers.
This signals a massive opportunity for Microsoft and could be the beginning of the end for Android, which has yet to make a noticeable mark in the tablet market while its problems in the smartphone are mounting.
The Windows Phone Tango could help Microsoft attack the budget smartphone market while Windows Phone Apollo will help it capture market share in the premium smartphone segment. Windows 8 may even become one of the largest players in the tablet OS market, next only to iOS, while Android keeps struggling in the space.

Nokia designer confirms Windows tablet
Mar 15, 2012
(Reuters) - Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari is spending a third of his time on creating a tablet for the cellphone maker, which would stand out among hundreds of iPad-challengers, he said in an interview with Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio.
"We are working on it," he was quoted as saying.
Nokia's Chief Executive Stephen Elop has said the category is interesting for the Finnish company, but has stressed the need for a different approach to numerous rivals trying to battle against the dominance of Apple's iPad.
"We continue to eye the tablet space with interest, but have made no specific announcements," a company spokesman said on Thursday.
Nokia is widely expected to launch an own tablet using Microsoft's Windows 8 software later this year.

Lenovo will be 'first to market' with a Windows 8 tablet, says source
By Sean Hollister on March 15, 2012 05:13 pm
Michael Dell said that he would offer an enterprise tablet "on the exact day" that Windows 8 ships to customers, but his company may have some competition right out of the gate: We've learned that Lenovo is internally planning to be the very first manufacturer to release a Windows 8 tablet, and that the company believes that October is when the operating system will ship. Our source wouldn't provide any details on the slate, save that it will use an Intel chip, but we already saw one possible machine at CES: the 13.3-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, pictured above, with an attached keyboard on a 360-degree hinge that lets you flip the machine into a laptop configuration. Of course, Dell and Lenovo aren't the only companies building Windows 8 slates, as HP, Nokia, Asus, and others are vying for a piece of the action. It's also worth noting that just about any Windows 7 machine can use the new operating system, too... and it can even be marketed as a Windows 8 slate so long as it supports five touchpoints, houses a wide variety of sensors, and sports certain hardware buttons according to Microsoft's tablet requirements.

Every Windows version has "getting started" tutorial. This guides user on
familiarizing with the windows version. In the case of Windows 8, it is much
needed because average users will be facing new set of UI.
Microsoft knows it. They have been designing software since 1975.
In software development, it is always a risky challenge to introduce new
set of UI to your users. Average users don't always like changes.
"The New Familiar" may be a tagline for Windows 8/Windows Phone 8.

I'm pretty sure that Windows 8 is also great for gaming cause the OS itself requires low specs like RAM, CPU/GPU, like what aerosynth have already stated that even ARM CPU can able to run Win8 efficiently.
The problem in the previous windows OS iteration when running a videogame is you have to put a lot of excess power inside your PC, meaning if the minimum system requirement of a certain game is:
Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
256MB HD videocard with shader 3.0 support
250GB HDD
You need to put this inside your PC instead or else it will lag and you will experience framerate issue or bug:
Core 2 Quad or Core i3
4-6GB of RAM
1GB HD videocard with shader 4.0 support
500HDD
The reason why gamers don't have any other option to use lower specs is because previous windows OS like XP,Vista,7 is running on the background, file swapping is occurring while game software is being processed..
Now with Win8, expect that gaming will be an ease when running OS and game software simultaneously.. I'm definitely excited for this.

The stunning "Metro" interface just begs you to touch and interact with it. Beautifully designed apps, ultra-simple navigation, and instinctive commands make it hard to believe Metro came from the same company that brought us Windows Vista. Interactive, "live" tiles and an intuitive app store simplify the PC. Windows 8 is as easy to use as the iPad.
That's the key difference between Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPad strategy and Microsoft's Windows 8 approach. Apple made a complementary gadget, while Microsoft's software is designed for a catch-all device.
Anyone 25 or older probably remembers the way Windows 95 reimagined what a PC could do. Windows 8 does that again, to a much greater degree.
It's not hard to envision waking up to your alarm in the morning, reading a book on the train, creating spreadsheets at work, playing Angry Birds on your ride home, and watching Netflix in bed -- all on the same Windows 8 device.

What they should do is come up with ways for users to switch between interfaces familiar to Microsoft and even Apple and open-source users and the ones used for mobile and touch-screen devices.
That should not be difficult because the fast boot-time, better memory management, etc., will be its main selling point.
i don't think iniba nila yung system requirements ni windows 8 with windows 7 and vista. same na same pa rin yung minimum requirements.
what i know is that windows 7 was faster than the previous OS because it only allocated resources to the "active" window. in vista, pantay pantay treatment ng lahat ng apps.

Same as Apple's Ipad
In embracing ARM technology, Microsoft is using the same kind of processors as Apple Inc's iPad. Still, there will be fewer than five ARM devices in the debut, compared with more than 40 Intel machines.

Windows 8 Is Retina-Ready
All the talk these days is of the new iPad and its magical screen. Apple isn’t the only one who can do that, you know. In fact, most display makers are looking forward to post-HD resolutions as one of the big selling points of the next generation of displays. Other tablets are already approaching iPad levels of pixel density and it would be foolish of the likes of Google and Microsoft not to be planning for it.
Fortunately, Microsoft is well aware of the trend and has plans in place for dealing with displays with pixel-dense displays (or “Retina” to the vulgar).

Wow! certified MS fanboy
I admire your effort for posting a lot of positive articles in favor of MS, sure it might help boost it's market here in crazy place called Philippines.
Might as well do it, since majority of the Windows users all over the planet uses the cracked or pirated version.. And also you will never find any difference between legit and cracked version of it, all I know in the legitimate version, you can safely integrate your Windows online without worrying that MS might trace your windows copy as not genuine, and gave you 30 days deadline to replace it with ORIG one.i'll get the pirated version. lol
