    Windows 8 News & Update

Microsoft's Ballmer says next-gen Windows systems due in 2012

“We’re obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows. Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year. We’ve done a lot in Windows 7 to improve customer satisfaction. We have a brand new user interface. We’ve added touch, and ink, and speech. And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.”

Microsoft: Windows 8 public pre-release ‘will be easy and not a secret’
    By Michael Collado
    – August 19, 2011

Microsoft all but explicitly stated they will be offering public test copies of Windows 8 in an “easy” and non-secret manner. At least, that’s what the company’s official Windows 8 BUILD conference Twitter profile is stating.

Windows 8 Hardware Requirements Identical to Windows 7

If you thought Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system would require an additional RAM and a faster processor, you’d be wrong. Microsoft’s Tami Reller, who is the Corporate VP for the Windows division has stated that Windows 8 wouldn't require additional resources. This means that you would be able to continue using your existing desktop or notebook. She mentioned that this was an important part of Windows 8 for business customers. There’s clearly no lack of good hardware in the market today and there shouldn’t be a need to keep upgrading it, everytime a new version of the OS is launched. Windows 7 doesn’t demand a whole lot from today’s hardware. For example, Windows 7 can run just about OK on a 1GHz processor with 1GB of memory and 16GB of disk space. Most of today’s PCs have much higher specs in that aspect.

The other reason for concern has been software compatibility. Microsoft COO, Kevin Turner has also said that Windows 8 will be backward compatible, as well. Microsoft spoke about Windows 8 at their Worldwide Partner Conference. Although, no demonstrations or new features of the OS were displayed, that’s expected to happen at the BUILD conference, between September 13th to 16th.

Windows 8 is being built from the ground up to support the ARM architecture,
which means everything from tablets to mobile phones should be able to support it.

Microsoft adding speech recognition tech to Windows 8,
    next generation products

We see a future where the service will know you: know your intent, your social and business connections, your likes and dislikes, your privacy preferences, and the things that define the context that’s important to you. The result will be a speech NUI service that helps you accomplish everyday tasks in a more natural and conversational manner. This service will simplify tasks that used to be tedious or impossible on a TV or other device, by combining an understanding of language and intent with a deep knowledge of you, the user. We envision a future where we build on the experiences we deliver today with Kinect for Xbox 360, Windows Phone, or Bing for iPad or iPhone apps, by enhancing the speech NUI experience to understand more layers of context: what you are doing, where you are doing it, the kinds of devices you are using and your historical preferences. Because this is a cloud-based service, your interactions will be able to persist over time, enabling you to pick up where you left off, regardless of what device you may be using.

Microsoft: Windows 8 won't require a new PC

To prove the point, Microsoft's Michael Angiulo showed Windows 8 running on a handful of existing PCs

"Another thing we did is build intelligence into Windows 8 to adapt the user interface based on what hardware you have. So whether you're upgrading or buying a new PC, Windows will adapt itself for your hardware," he said.
