Question Do you consider the FMC and Fil-Oil Tourneys as best gauges of your team's chances?

It seems the top two teams of the NCAA have been beaten by lower ranked UAAP teams in the ongoing Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan Cty on Saturday.
University of Santo Tomas (UST) survived a two-overtime thriller defeating San Sebastian College (SSC), 104-102 and
National University (NU) stunned NCAA champion San Beda, 83-80, for its second win in as many games. Anyway, it's still too early to tell if this trend continues and it all depends on the NC teams to make the right adjustments.

As long as there are teams who are not taking these tournaments seriously, it's not a good gauge.

Also, I wouldn't be worried this upcoming season if we already have a couple of losses. The team that's playing in the FilOil is not the team that will be playing in the NCAA so obviously, it's not a good gauge.

However, it's a good testing grounds for coaches to test plays, combinations and the likes. It's a good chance for coaches to make mistakes and learn from them in time for the NCAA/UAAP season.

Nope. There's more pressure, the crowds are more intimidating and the stakes are higher in the UAAP.

at tsaka malalaman na talaga ang tunay na sukatan ng isang team kapag nailabas na ang final line-ups ng uaap/ncaa... at sa season proper na mismo

Yes, I think they are the best gauges for your team's chances.

Now while they are the best gauges, they are not by any means a good gauge. Different teams have different levels of preparation, different motivations for joining, and different objectives to achieve.

Teams may play to intimidate, to evaluate players, to evaluate plays, to improve stamina or just to stay fit. Thus, there is bigger possibility of upsets in these leagues. Though, I seriously doubt if losers of upsets are in fact upset.

i remember a FMC season several years ago (time of Jonathan Fernandez, Rey Mendoza and Edwin Asoro) that NU actually won the summer FMC tournament .. only to finish 8th in the UAAP a few months later.

so NO, these pre-season tournaments are not a good gauge of how your team will fare in the coming season. coaches tend to treat these leagues as mere practice sessions, playing at maybe half intensity to avoid injuries, and a chance for them to test new plays and player combinations. also to see which players have been keeping themselves in shape during the 2nd Sem and early summer months.

for me, it'll be of no use if a team would be a champion in any of these summer leagues, if they won't be able to win the big league (UAAP/NCAA) they're really preparing for.. yeah, i agree summer leagues like this (filoil) will atleast give you hints/ideas of things to look forward to..

^ Same with me. Nadala na e for how many preseasons. Lots of hype no substance.

Preseason is not a gauge. It's a preparation for the preseason IMO.

Hintay na lang mga UP fans sa cheerdance and yes FOOTBALL. Madami nawala pero tingin ko madedefend yan.

    Preseasons are made because

    1) Acid test for rookies (and not so rookies like Slaughter)
    2) Method to find team errors (defense and offensive plays)
    3) Practice session for the drummers
    4) General overview but not the real overview. Me panahon pa para baguhin

They will be serious if the huge price money is at stake, if monetary is not inevitable. Then a slot overseas will do.

Like the champion will join the "S.J.G. Greater NC Pro-AM" league in the US wherein they have the chance to play against US NCAA teams
