It’s true: American Protestant congregations continue decline
Written by LESLIE SCANLON, Outlook national reporter

For mainline Protestant denominations, it is not good news.
A study looking at the health of American congregations over a decade — from 2000 to 2010 — found that “despite bursts of innovation and pockets of vitality, the first decade of the twenty-first century witnessed a slow, overall erosion of the strength of American’s congregations.

The report — written by David Roozen of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research — didn’t turn up much good news for evangelical congregations. And the outlook was even more bleak for what Roozen calls “Oldline Protestant” churches, denominations such the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), along with the United Methodists, Lutherans and Episcopalians, all of which are aging and losing members at a painful rate.

According to the study, 63 percent of Oldline congregations report a weekly attendance of 100 or fewer people, compared with 56 percent in 2000. More than one in four congregations overall had 50 or fewer in worship in 2010.

“What’s interesting is how old the Oldline really is,” Roozen wrote in a commentary accompanying the report. “Half of the congregations could lose one-third of their members in 15 years.”

In short: the Oldline congregations are made up disproportionately of older members, who slowly are dying off. There aren’t enough young people to take their places: About 75 percent of Oldline churches reported that fewer than 10 percent of their members were young adults, ages 18 to 34.

The story isn’t dramatically better for evangelical congregations. More of them are getting smaller too — with their percentage of congregations reporting 100 or fewer in attendance rising from 33 percent to 47 percent over the 10 years of the study. That finding matches overall declines or evening out in membership reported in recent years for denominations such as the Southern Baptist Convention and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

These findings come from the report “A Decade of Change in American Congregations: 2000-2010”, which is the result of a 2010 survey done by the ongoing survey project Faith Communities Today (FACT). FACT surveyed more than 10,000 congregations from a variety of faith traditions, including Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jewish and Baha’i.

The big picture from the research looks something like this:

» As more congregations grow older and smaller, many are feeling the financial pressures of having fewer people to give. That, plus declining membership overall, could have serious implications for their ability to survive. In 2000, about a third of congregations described themselves as having excellent financial health — compared to only 14 percent 10 years later.

» Across the board, churches are failing to connect with young people – increasing proportions of whom describe themselves as having no religious affiliation. The findings of this study echo those of earlier research. For example, a 2010 report from the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found that just over a quarter of young adults born after 1980 (known as the millennial generation) said they don’t identify with any religious group. Only one in five said they attended worship every week or so. But about half of these young adults said they were “sure” God exists and about four in 10 reported praying daily. The study concluded that, compared to their parents and grandparents at the same ages, millennials were less connected to organized religion, but not necessarily more secular in outlook.

» Congregations and denominations that are overwhelmingly white — as is the PC(USA) — are feeling the brunt of demographic changes. An influx of immigrants, along with a higher birth rate among people of color than among whites, means that growing congregations tend to be found among non-white racial or ethnic groups.

» More congregations used new technology and contemporary worship

» The number of congregations with weekly attendance above 2,000 grew but still represented only .05 percent of American congregations.

    Song Lyrics:
    (chorus)
There's a zombie on your lawn
There's a zombie on your lawn
There's a zombie on your lawn
We don't want zombies on the lawn

I know your type: tall, dark, and dead
You want to bite all the petals off of my head
And then eat the brains of
the one who planted me here

I'm just a sunflower but see
    me power an entire infantry
You like the taste of brains
    we don't like zombies

    I used to play football
    Road cones protect my head
    I have a screen-door shield
    We are the undead

    (repeat chorus)

    Maybe it's time to reevaluate
I know you have a lot of food on your plate
Brains are quite rich in cholesterol

You're dead so it doesn't matter,
Instead we'll use this solar power
to make a lawn defense at any hour

    I like the tricycle
    There's butter on my head
    I'm gonna eat your brains

    (repeat chorus)

Churchgoing Among U.S. Catholics Slides to Tie Protestants
However, long-term decline may have leveled off in past decade
    by Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ -- According to Gallup Poll trends on church attendance among American Christians, weekly attendance among Protestants has been fairly steady over the past six decades, averaging 42% in 1955 versus 45% in the middle of the current decade. However, attendance among Roman Catholics dropped from 75% to 45% over the same period.

Most of the decline in church attendance among American Catholics occurred in the earlier decades, between 1955 and 1975; however, it continued at a rate of four percentage points a decade through the mid-1990s, and church attendance has since leveled off at 45%.

The Gallup Poll's rich archives of religious preference and church attendance data have been mined in time to provide a detailed picture of church attendance trends among U.S. Christians heading into Easter Sunday. Multiple surveys were combined for each decade starting with the 1950s, using Gallup religion surveys conducted closest to the middle of the decade. This provides ample sample size to examine the church attendance patterns of Protestants and Catholics, and of various age categories within those religious groups.

On the basis of these 10-year snapshots of church attendance, the percentage of Catholics saying they went to church in the past week is essentially unchanged between 1995 and today. That's an extremely important finding given the upheaval in the U.S. Roman Catholic Church caused by the sexual abuse scandals that erupted earlier this decade. Gallup polling in 2002 and 2003 found a decline in the percentages of Catholics saying they had attended church in the past week; however, attendance rebounded by the end of 2003 and has since remained on par with its pre-scandal level of about 45%.

Young Catholics Drop Out of Church by the 1970s

Beyond the divergent attendance trends of Protestants and Catholics, the historical data reveal distinct generational patterns in church attendance within each Christian faith.

In 1955, adult Catholics of all ages attended church at similar rates, with between 73% and 77% saying they attended in the past week. By the mid-1960s, weekly attendance of young Catholics (those 21 to 29 years of age) started to wane, falling to 56%, while attendance among other age groups dropped only slightly, to around 70%. By the mid-1970s, only 35% of Catholics in their 20s said they had attended in the past week, but attendance was also starting to fall among those in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Attendance for most of the groups continued to fall from the 1970s to the 1990s. However, over the past decade it has generally stabilized, particularly among Catholics in their 20s and 30s.

Across this entire period, attendance among Catholics aged 60 and older has dropped from 73% to 58%.

Protestant Attendance Steady Among Most Age Groups

The picture in attendance by age is entirely different among Protestants. Apart from a temporary dip in weekly church attendance among 21- to 29-year-old Protestants in the 1960s and 1970s, attendance has stayed the same or increased among all the age groups. It even rebounded among young Protestants in the 1980s, and is now close to 1950s levels.

Of course, the "Protestant" moniker encompasses many distinct religious denominations, some of which have reportedly experienced high growth in membership over the past few decades, while others have been in decline. The figures reported here represent averages for all Protestant faiths.

    Bottom Line

The increasingly spare attendance at regular mass has been of considerable concern to the Catholic Church in the United States for some time. Theologians and other observers have variously offered the cultural upheaval of the 1960s, changes to the church brought about in the 1960s by the Second Vatican Council, and national publicity in 2002 over sexual abuse lawsuits against Catholic priests as possible contributors to the trend.

Whatever the causes, it is clear that U.S. Catholics' once-nearly uniform obedience to their church's requirement of weekly mass attendance has faded, and Catholics are now no different from Protestants in their likelihood to attend church. This has occurred among Catholics of all age categories, but is most pronounced among those under 60. The good news for the Catholic Church is that the drop in attendance seems to have slowed or abated altogether in the last decade, spanning a most difficult period for the church around 2002, when attendance did suffer temporarily.

U.S. Protestant church attendance has also been steady over the past decade, but is actually higher now than it was in the 1970s and 1980s, in part the result of a resurgence of regular attendance among young adults.

    Survey Methods

These results are based on aggregates of Gallup Poll surveys for the following periods: 1955, 1965-1966, 1975, 1983-1986, 1995-1996, 2005-2008. The sample sizes for Protestants and Catholics, overall and by age group, are provided in the accompanying tables.

Tan’s Empire to build P45-B ‘fun’ hub

    MONDAY, 16 JULY 2012 22:01 MIGUEL R. CAMUS / REPORTER
Empire East Land Holdings Inc., the listed middle-income residential builder of taipan Andrew Tan, is diversifying into upscale developments after being tapped by Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada to build luxury condominiums in a $2-billion casino development in the Entertainment City complex in Manila Bay.

Empire East, a subsidiary of Megaworld Corp., said in a regulatory filing that it had signed a joint-venture agreement with Okada’s Tiger Resort and Leisure Entertainment Inc. and Eagle 1 Landholdings Inc. to take a majority stake in the partnership.

Empire East President Charlemagne Yu said in a text message that the total development cost is estimated at P45 billion, of which an initial P10 billion has been committed.

The builder’s shares jumped 11.25 percent to P0.89 each on Monday’s close, after gaining as much as 12.5 percent earlier in the session, on heavy trading volume.

Empire East is planning more than 25 residential towers over 13 hectares within the 120-hectare Entertainment City, which has come to symbolize the Philippines’s efforts at becoming a major gaming hub in a region led by Macau and Singapore.

It is moving to tap new opportunities even as its core business faces stiff competition from SM Development Corp., Ayala Land Inc. and other aggressive players.

“Empire East will compete with all the developers in the market, including Megaworld,” Yu said. “This is healthier rather than limiting Empire East to one segment of the market. [We] want to have a piece of the high-end market, as well.”

Tan’s decision to use Empire East as his joint-venture vehicle instead of Megaworld, which owns a stake in casino operator Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., also helps remove any perceived conflict-of-interest issues between Tan and Okada, market watchers said.

Travellers, a 50-50 joint venture between Tan’s group and Malaysia’s Genting Group, operates the existing Resorts World Manila integrated casino and will open Resorts World Bayshore in Entertainment City by 2016.

Empire East is the first Philippine firm to be tapped by Okada, who remains the sole foreign licensee in Entertainment City. Okada is also in talks with the Gokongwei Group’s Robinsons Land Corp. for a potential tie-up but a definitive agreement has not been signed, a filing last week showed.

Yu said Empire East would raise funds from the sale of equity and debt, without elaborating. Empire East earlier announced a P2.6-billion rights offering, which is scheduled for completion this quarter. “We have very low gearing and can easily gear up some more,” he added.

The builder recently approved to increase its authorized capital stock from P23.4 billion to P33.4 billion, which is expected to be completed within the end of the year. The two other licensees in Entertainment City  are Belle Corp. of Henry Sy and Bloomberry Resorts Corp. led by Enrique Razon Jr.

Philippine gaming revenues hit $1.3 billion last year but could grow to $3 billion by 2015, CLSA said in a study.

BEST HOLIDAY DESTINATION Ariara island boasts of 600 meters of soft, white sand, one of the reasons it topped the British edition of Vogue Magazine’s 100 best holiday destinations in the world. PHOTO FROM WWW.ARIARAISLAND.COM

The fun in the Philippines is definitely starting to pick up with a private getaway island in Palawan province taking the top spot in the British edition of Vogue Magazine’s 100 best holiday destinations in the world.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Monday announced that the magazine, which named Ariara Island—a 103-hectare “private paradise” snuggled among the untouched Calamian Islands—as the world’s No. 1 getaway spot, will hit the stands in August.

In a statement, Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. said Philippine tourism would surely benefit from the worldwide recognition.

“What is remarkable is that the entire resort is a testament to the unique artistry and skills of Filipino designers and artisans,” Jimenez said.

“The use of local materials and traditional techniques serves as good advertising for Filipino craftsmanship and world-class products,” he added.

“Tourism is not just about counting tourist arrivals … more importantly, it is about building opportunities on the ground and improving lives, in communities, in very real places.”

The resort is owned by British property developer Charles McCulloch and his wife, Carrie.

The United Kingdom remains to be one of the Philippines’ biggest tourism markets, registering over 104,400 tourist arrivals last year, which the DOT noted was a record.

    Ultimate destination

Ariara Island’s eco-friendly structures, its luxurious and spacious villas and cottages, were designed by renowned Filipino architect Jorge Yulo.

Every piece of furniture that adorns these structures was handcrafted and upholstered by local carpenters. Some had also been outsourced to Filipino artisans.

The DOT said the resort’s wooden baths employed traditional boat-building techniques, while marble baths were hand-carved from single blocks of Romblon marble.

Cushions were crafted from Mindanao’s vivid tribal fabrics and its wall accents featured heliographs and ceramics created by Filipino artist Ugu Bigyan.

The tropical island resort has been described as “the ultimate off-the-beaten-track destination,” which offers guests—a group of up to 18 people—an all-inclusive package of exclusivity, relaxation, 24-hour service, excellent cuisine and a wide array of amenities.

For $295 (P12,000) a night per person, guests can relax in its posh villas and cottages and enjoy an unbroken view of the neighboring islands and the clear blue waters of Palawan.

Guests will be made to feel like royalty even in the bedroom, which is adorned with a private terrace and a garden, hanging chairs and hammocks, a four-poster bed, a walk-in closet, a large bathroom and an open-air shower.

Out in the sea, they can enjoy jet-skiing, windsurfing, canoeing, snorkeling or scuba diving to discover Calamian Islands’ rich diversity of marine life.

    Intensified promotions

Lucky visitors may even spot some of the world’s endangered species of sea turtles such as Hawksbill, leatherback, Olive Ridley and green turtles crawling along Ariara’s main beach to lay eggs.

Guests who are avid bird watchers may turn to the island’s unspoiled forest for relaxation. It is home to eagles, owls, kingfishers, woodpeckers, egrets and flower peckers, among other bird species.

“The resort’s properly planned development and low density show the owners’ respect for the environment,” Jimenez noted.

“We want to see more of this type of investment which supports the principles of responsible, ethical and sustainable tourism,” he added.

From January to May this year alone, British tourist arrivals continued to grow, yielding 50,347 arrivals. This was “one notch higher” from its previous 10th place, according to the DOT.

It also said that British tourist arrivals were expected to improve with the ongoing promotional efforts in the United Kingdom via London cabs, double-decker buses and posters mounted in strategic places in time for the Queen’s recent diamond jubilee and the 2012 Olympics.

Syria Is Now a 'Civil War.' Does That Matter?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lionel...b_1676178.html

Lionel BeehnerFellow, Truman National Security Project

    Posted: 07/17/2012 3:11 pm

After a year and a half of escalating violence and thousands killed, the International Red Cross has finally gotten around to labeling Syria a "civil war." The reaction from most experts is: Well, duh. This is the foreign policy equivalent of Anderson Cooper coming out of the closet: Tell us something we didn't already know.

But does this distinction, from either a legal or policy perspective, really matter? From a legal perspective, the actors in the conflict are now subject to what's called "international humanitarian law," which means that the Geneva Conventions -- that is, the laws that regulate actors' conduct of jus in bello -- apply (for a nice roundup of the legal implications, see Bobby Chesney's blog post). It doesn't necessarily mean that prisoners will get comfier digs, civilians will no longer be unlawfully targeted, or that Assad will be prosecuted as a war criminal in The Hague. But it does provide greater legal ammo to human rights defenders who want him charged pronto. That is because the laws of war are different from, say, the laws of armed protests (recall that France called its decades-long conflict in Algeria a "police operation" to avoid outside criticism of its human rights abuses). Even so, this semantic distinction is more of a matter for folks in fancy suits in Western capitals to debate. On the ground, it's not like a Hunger Games-style anthem goes off and the rules of engagement are irrevocably changed.

That said, it may matter more from a policy perspective. That is, the civil war distinction in theory is meant to push the international community to take greater notice and become more engaged. We would expect tougher sanctions and UN security council resolutions to follow (the regime in question, whether Libya's Gaddafi or Syria's Assad, blames foreign terrorists to avoid the civil war tag). In reality, however, often the opposite is the case, as I've noted here and here. The civil war label is a loaded term that fuels the argument made by non-interventionists that this is an internal struggle, sometimes driven by ancient ethnic hatreds, and that we need to just "give war a chance." Or in James Baker's immortalized words on the Balkans: "We don't have a dog in that fight." The trouble with the civil war distinction is its arbitrariness (if the threshold used by political scientists were to apply, Syria was a civil war well over a year ago) and its rhetorical baggage: Does a civil war label prompt action by outsiders or inaction?

In the end, the semantics of conflict may matter less than events on the ground. Short of a pending Benghazi or Srebrenica-style massacre, it appears unlikely that the international community will do anything to get off its duff and intervene. Even the relatively doable task of imposing a no-fly zone or arming the rebels looks improbable at this point. The Kofi Annan peace plan is dead in the water, and the Russians will not do anything to nudge their longtime ally in Damascus aside. Sadly, a foreign NGO calling the conflict a civil war is unlikely to change any of this.

The IMF’s team of debt inspectors concluded that while Portugal remained on track to meet its 2012 deficit target of 4.5pc, unemployment, which climbed by one percentage point in the first quarter of 2012, had generated a deficit gap of 0.5pc of GDP.

While the gap is expected to be offset by lower than expected interest payments on its debt and "re-programming of EU funds," Abebe Aemro Selassie, the IMF's mission chief for Portugal, said: "It's important to know that we have always said that we keep an open mind when setting these targets and they're not set in stone."

Concerns over unemployment, which currently stands at 15.2pc, were described as "the number one item on the agenda" for both the government and Portuguese unions.

The IMF predicts the unemployment rate will peak at 15.9pc at the beginning of 2013.

"We see unemployment coming down after it peaks later this year, but it will come down relatively slowly which is a source of concern," said Mr Selassie.

He said that the government will work on policies to get "to the nub of the problem," including helping young people into employment and avoiding policies that cause "excess job losses".

Debt is now expected to peak at around 118.5pc percent of GDP in 2013, the IMF said, 3 percentage points higher than projected in April.

On a positive note, the IMF added that Portugal's austerity programme had a "reasonably strong" chance of success.

It also predicts that the economy will contract by 3pc this year, narrower than the 3.3pc predicted in April.

Portugal paralysed by general strike as second bailout looms
    By Paul Mitchell
    23 March 2012

Portugal was paralysed by a general strike yesterday, as workers demonstrated against austerity measures and labour reforms.

The Lisbon metro, which carries more than half a million passengers every weekday, stayed closed. Train, bus and ferry companies in the capital and the second-largest city, Porto, ran few services. Many schools, hospitals, courts, government offices, post offices, libraries, museums, refuse collection services and ports were also affected.

In the private sector, between 60 and 100 percent of workers took action at Bosch, Portugal Energy, Delphi Automotive, Parmalat, Citroen, Saint-Gobain, Tenneco, RTS Group and several large construction companies.

No official figures were available on the number of workers taking part in the strike. The right-wing Social Democratic Party/Democratic and Social Centre/People’s Party coalition decided not to issue any estimates because it would “feed a controversy that the government intends to avoid”. However, reports suggest more workers took part than the 25 percent participation in the general strike of November 2011.

This is despite the fact that Portugal’s second-largest union, the Socialist Party-aligned General Workers Union (UGT), refused to take part. The UGT was involved in last year’s general strike, but in January signed up to a package of labour market reforms demanded by the European Union and IMF in return for the €78 billion ($103 billion) troika (European Union- European Central Bank-International Monetary Fund) bailout last May. These measures allow the slashing of holiday entitlement, redundancy pay, overtime rates and unemployment benefits, increase flexible working, make it easier for employers to sack workers and undermine collective bargaining. They come on top of earlier austerity measures that cut wages and pensions, set about privatising remaining public companies, introduced payment for health care and increased VAT, fares in public transport and tuition fees.

The Portuguese government has been praised by EU leaders for dramatically reducing its budget deficit as a result of the austerity programme. The latest government estimate put the deficit for 2011 at close to 4 percent of GDP, well below the official target of 5.9 percent.

Portugal is already Western Europe’s poorest country, with economic growth stalling at one percent in the decade up to 2010. The government’s slash and burn policies have led to the worst recession, now in its second year, since 1975. In 2011, the economy contracted by 1.5 percent and forecasts suggest it will shrink by 3.3 percent this year.

Despite this, government debt has risen from 92 percent of GDP in 2010 to 110 percent of GDP in late 2011. Credit rating agencies have downgraded the debt to junk status. Reports suggest Portugal will be unable to return to the money markets for loans in September 2013 as expected and may require another bailout.

The core deficit tripled in the first two months of 2012, showing that the recession is cutting tax revenues and other government income and leading to increased spending on unemployment benefits. Matters will be made worse should neighbouring Spain, which accounts for more than 25 percent of Portuguese exports, be forced into a bailout.

Increasing numbers of small and medium enterprises are facing bankruptcy, while large companies leave the country and move to European tax havens. Supermarket giant Jerónimo Martins, whose profits rose 21 percent in 2011, has recently moved more than half of its capital to the Netherlands to avoid paying taxes.

The sale of state assets has been slow, with Chinese companies among the few prepared to bid for them. There was only one bidder at the end—a China State Grid/Oman Oil joint venture—when a quarter of electricity grid operator REN was sold for €387 million last month. Similar problems could occur with the planned privatisation of the airline TAP, airport operator ANA, parts of the postal service CTT, water utilities, state banks, the rail service CP and the oil company Galp.

The interest rate on Portugal’s 10-year government bonds still stood at 12.5 percent on Wednesday, more than double the level considered sustainable, after reaching 17 percent at the end of January. Goldman Sachs sees Portugal needing up to €50 billion more in the next two years.

Managing Director of Market Research and Strategy at Roubini Global Economics, Arnab Das, told CNBC, “Our view is that Greece is done, Portugal is coming and also Ireland”.

He warned that although the European Central Bank had increased the liquidity of banks, nothing has been done to resolve the central problem of bank solvency or capitalisation. “We’ve averted the worst financial crisis in history but have not solved the core issues yet”, he concluded.

For the working class, the austerity measures have been a disaster. The unemployment rate, which reached 12.7 percent in 2011, is forecast to rise to 14.5 percent. Among young people, in just nine months it soared from 27 percent to 35 percent—leaving nearly 160,000 without a job. The €432 monthly minimum take-home wage is pushing hundreds of thousands into poverty. A quarter of the population are below the poverty line.

In February, an unexpected 1,000 extra deaths occurred, which the government blamed on flu and cold weather. However, the media have published reports that the cause is connected with increases in the cost of heating and health care such as the €20 payment, up from €9, for a visit to an emergency clinic. The president of the National Association of Public Health Physicians, declared, “I know people who stopped going to the hospital, buying medicine and having medical checks because of user fees.”

EU leaders have also praised the PSD-CDS government and the PS which it replaced in June for preventing the sort of protests that have occurred in Greece and neighbouring Spain since the sovereign debt crisis began. This is entirely the responsibility of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), its General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP) and the petty-bourgeois Left Bloc (BE), which dish up token opposition in order to divert workers behind appeals to the government to renegotiate the country’s debt.

According to UGT General Secretary João Proença, he was “encouraged” to sign the labour reform agreement by “leaders of the CGTP majority” before they walked out of the talks. The BE calls for the creation of a Citizen Debt Audit to examine the debt and to reject only that part which is deemed “illegitimate.”
In the 2009 election, the PCP and BE won nearly 18 percent of the vote and held a significant constituency amongst public-sector workers in particular. In last year’s election, their vote fell to less than 13 percent—due to the halving of the BE’s support. This is pay-back for their unswerving support for the PS and the trade union bureaucracy.

There is no other commandment greater than these. — Mark 12:31

One morning on my way to work, I began to wonder, Why should I obey God’s laws? The answer played out as I approached a traffic light that had just turned yellow. A driver at the intersection waited to make sure I had fully stopped. Why did I stop? I asked myself. I could have made it.

Two reasons came to mind—survival and surveillance. I could be injured or killed. Or a police officer might see me and give me a ticket. Good reasons, don’t you think? But are these the highest motives? Am I concerned about other drivers?

Obeying God’s commands out of fear would reduce much of the wreckage strewn along life’s highway due to adultery, murder, lying, stealing, and coveting. But there is a higher motive. When Jesus was asked, “Which is the first commandment of all?” He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart,” and second, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Then He said, “There is no other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31).

Once we put our faith in Christ as our Savior and experience God’s love, our motivation for obeying His commands changes. That means we slow down at God’s “yellow lights,” stop at His “red lights,” and proceed at His “green lights” for the highest reason—love. — Dennis De Haan

“We love You, Lord Jesus,” we often may say,

But are we as ready His will to obey?

    Let’s heed what God’s Spirit

    would have us to do,

That’s how we can show Him a love that is true

Town Mayor declares two days of official mourning

    UPDATED: 12:22 GMT, 22 October 2011

A British couple have been killed in flash floods following torrential rain in Spain.

The married holidaymakers, aged 72 and 70, were seen clinging desperately to parts of a market street cafe in the quiet seaside resort of Cala Finestrat on the Costa Blanca.

According to one eyewitness, a market stall, which was being washed along by the flood water, smashed into them and carried them away.

It has now emerged that the town's council was fined 83,000 Euros in July 2010 for asphalting the bed of the ravine, where the market was held, without permission.

Dramatic new footage has emerged showing the ferocity of the flood water.

In a four minute video the brown water carries away cars, furniture and viewers can see frantic people wading through the path of the flood trying to grab possessions.

Scroll down to see video of the flash flood...

Swept away: In video footage which is slowly emerging of the flood, cars and vans can be seen being literally carried away by the water

Swept away: Footage shows furniture being washed away by flood water

Terror: As furniture and cars are swept away people frantically try to pull possessions out of the waters way
In one section of the video people are seen trying to gather items from lorries and cars as the water carries them off.
The town council had also been warned by the Spanish government's Ministry of Environment not to hold public events there until further works had been carried out - and was told it would have to pay damages for any incidents that occurred.
The couple have not been named. The cafe owner was also washed away but managed to save himself.
The regular Friday market has around 150 stalls and is popular with British tourists and expats.
Five other people were injured in the floods at Cala Finestrat, two miles from Benidorm, on the south east coast.

Wrecked: Volunteers help clear up after water swept through the market causing severe landslides and destroying market holder stalls

Tragedy: An elderly married British couple were killed when a heavy rainstorm caused flooding in a popular weekly market in Cala Finestrat near Benidorm in Spain

The flooding followed two hours of heavy rain this morning and swept away cars and market stalls.

Huge amounts of water ran down a ravine and into the market at around 11.30am. The area saw 7.2 litres of rain fall per square metre in just 25 minutes.

Government spokesman Jose Perez Grau confirmed the dead couple were a British man aged 72 and his wife aged 70.

He said the intensity of the rainfall had 'come from nowhere' and had made it very difficult to predict.

Spanish newspapers reported that emergency alerts were usually set off when 40 litres of water fell per square metre - and as it was just 7.2 litres this did not happen.

Flooded: Five other people were injured in the incident at Cala Finestrat, two miles from Benidorm, on the south east coast

Clear up: Market traders have spent the day clearing up after their businesses were devastated by the floods

Recurrence: It is not the first time the area has been hit by flash floods, with videos online suggesting it suffered similarly in 2007 and 2009
Footage on the internet has revealed that the town has suffered with flash floods before, most notably in 2007 and 2009.

An 88-year-old man was taken to hospital with a broken arm and a 51-year-old was hospitalised with severe cramp.

A 90-year-old Spanish woman feared missing in the flood was found safe.

Market trader Blanca Maria said she and others had previously complained about the risk of flooding because of the position of the market near the ravine.

She added: 'What happened was foreseeable but nobody cared.'

Other traders complained that emergency services took too long to arrive at the scene.

Luis Alberto Lamchimba, who sells textiles from his stall, said the flood had cost him 10,000 euros worth of stock.

The mayor of Finestrat, Honorato Algado, said: 'Our condolences go out to the family of the two victims.'

He said there would be two days of official mourning following the deaths and that flags around the town would be flown at half-mast from midnight tonight for 48 hours.

News agency Europa Press has reported that the town's council was fined 83,000 Euros in July 2010 for asphalting an area around the market without permission.

It had also been warned by the Spanish government's Ministry of Environment not to hold public events there until further works had been carried out - and was told it would have to pay damages for any incidents that occurred.

THIRD STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS OF
HIS EXCELLENCY BENIGNO S. AQUINO III
    PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES
TO THE CONGRESS OF THE PHILIPPINES
    BATASAN PAMBANSA COMPLEX, QUEZON CITY
    JULY 23, 2012

    Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile; Speaker Feliciano Belmonte; Bise Presidente Jejomar Binay; mga dating Pangulong Fidel Valdez Ramos at Joseph Ejercito Estrada; ang ating mga kagalang-galang na mahistrado ng Korte Suprema; mga kagalang-galang na kagawad ng kalipunang diplomatiko; mga kagalang-galang na miyembro ng Kamara de Representante at ng Senado; mga pinuno ng pamahalaang lokal; mga miyembro ng ating Gabinete; mga unipormadong kasapi ng militar at kapulisan; mga kapwa kong nagseserbisyo sa taumbayan;

Ayon sa Bloomberg Business Week, "Keep an eye on the Philippines."

"The Philippines is no longer a joke."

Ang pahayag nga po natin sa daigdig: "It's more fun in the Philippines." Masasabi nga po nating pagdating sa turismo, "It's really more fun-- to have Secretary Mon Jimenez."

Maibabalik ba sila ng forgive and forget?

At nagpautang pa! Himala!

The Eurozone was back on the brink last night as Spain edged towards a financial disaster that could tear the single currency apart.

Analysts said Spain’s huge economy was at a ‘tipping point’ and would inevitably need international aid.

In a sign that Europe’s debt crisis is deepening, Italy’s borrowing costs edged higher, Greece was was facing a 1930s-style depression and its austerity measures were said to be faltering.

Look of concern: Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attends a plenary session in Madrid to debate the country's spiralling borrowing costs
Additionally, ratings agencies threatened to strip Germany of its gold-plated credit rating because of the risk of the crisis spreading.

Germany's coveted AAA credit rating slashed to 'negative' as eurozone debt crisis continues to escalate
Treasury officials refused to discuss whether British taxpayers could be dragged into a bailout of Spain.

While the Coalition has extracted the UK from the Eurozone’s bailout funds, a full-blown crisis will probably mean Spain will also need a loan from the International Monetary Fund, of which Britain is a leading member.

David Cameron is pushing Eurozone leaders to agree that Germany and other wealthy countries in it, such as the Netherlands, should stand behind the debts of other countries.

Spain has already required an emergency loan package of up to £80billion to bail out its banks but that has done nothing to quell concerns about its ability to pay its way.

The country is crippled by a property crash and recession and the highest rate of unemployment in Europe.

Despair: A trader during afternoon trading on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange

On the up: At 1.285 euros, the pound is 14 per cent stronger versus the euro than this time last year
Spain’s crucial ten-year bond yield – the interest rate the government pays to borrow and a key indicator of a country’s financial health – hit a new euro-era high of 7.6 per cent.

Dismissing worst case scenarios: Mario Draghi said that the eurozone will require greater integration in the long term
That is deep in the danger zone and well above the 7 per cent level that triggered bailouts in Greece, Ireland and Portugal.
Spain is now paying more to service its debt over six months than countries such as Slovakia and the Czech Republic pay to borrow over ten years.
Sources close to the government were reported as saying that Spain would need a loan to avoid ‘imminent financial collapse’ facing the country when it has to cover a further £22billion of debt in October.

The Eurozone was further shaken by ratings agency Moody’s threat to downgrade the AAA credit ratings of Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Factory output in Germany and France fell at the fastest rate for more than three years.

The euro tumbled against the pound and shares from Madrid to Milan went into reverse.

Borrowing costs in Italy also soared as the financial markets bet that it will be the next domino to fall.

City analyst Gary Jenkins said. ‘The market is just saying Spain is a done deal, they are going to need a proper full bailout.

‘The danger is if Spain requires a bailout, the market will say Italy is next. And if that happens you have a major problem.’

Europe can ill-afford to rescue Spain – the fourth largest economy in the single currency bloc – and Italy is widely seen as too big to save.

In Greece, inspectors from the European Commission and the IMF returned to examine the country’s finances amid fears that austerity measures being demanded are simply not achievable.

‘Greece is hugely off track,’ one of the officials said.

The Greek prime minister said yesterday that the outlook for the country’s economy is even worse than feared.

Antonis Samaras said output could shrink by more than 7 per cent this year – a far steeper decline than the 5 per cent fall forecast.

The slump will bring the cumulative economic contraction to a punishing 20 per cent over the past five years in an echo of the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The premier insisted the country will return to growth ‘at the beginning of 2014’ and said he would seek a deal ‘as soon as possible’ to water down the cutbacks and reforms demanded in return for bailout funds.

Spain Uses State Lottery to Fund Regions as Its Bonds Slump
By Emma Ross-Thomas and Angeline Benoit on July 13, 2012 Tweet Facebook LinkedIn Google Plus 0 Comments

Spain will use its national lottery, the operator with the biggest jackpot in the world, to provide aid to regional governments as the nation struggles to avoid a second bailout itself.

The state-owned lottery will contribute 6 billion euros ($7.3 billion), taking out a loan against future revenue, to a fund of as much as 18 billion euros to fund redemptions and deficits for regions that request it.

Regions, many of which have been shut out of debt markets for more than a year, will pay a “small spread” above the central government’s yields to borrow from the fund, de Guindos said. The government will demand budget cuts in return from the regions that choose to use the fund, he said.

The yield on Spain’s 10-year benchmark bond rose four basis points to 6.68 percent as of 5:54 p.m. in Madrid, pushing the spread with similar German maturities to 5.42 percentage points.

Spain’s 10-year borrowing costs surged above 7 percent in June for the first time since the euro was created after the country requested as much as 100 billion euros in European loans to shore up a banking sector burdened with bad loans.

    ‘Fat One’
Loterias & Apuestas del Estado, a debt-free company the government tried to list on the stock market last year, has operated for almost 250 years in the world’s fourth-largest lottery market. The company’s annual Christmas draw, known as El Gordo, or the Fat One, had a prize pool last year of 2.3 billion euros. It had 2.6 billion euros of profit in 2010, according to the annual report.

The government also approved budget cuts announced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on July 11, a reform of local government and measures to increase shop opening hours, lift restrictions on retailers to offer discounts and help exporters get financing.

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said the government aims to increase competitiveness through some 20 laws scheduled for adoption in the second half of the year, including an energy-sector overhaul.

Budget Minister Cristobal Montoro confirmed changes in value-added tax rates, and announced most items in the reduced 10 percent rate category will be transferred to the general rate, itself increased to 21 percent from 18 percent.

“We had no choice,” Montoro told reporters. “We were forced by circumstances, by the recommendations, forced by the absolute priority to reduce the budget deficit.”

Celebration: IGLESIA NI KRISTO 98TH ANNIVERSARY

    July 26, 2012, 5:46pm

JULY 27, 2012 is “Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) Day,” a special national working holiday, pursuant to Republic Act 9645, signed on June 12, 2009, to recognize “the exemplary feat of INC in leading its members towards spiritual enlightenment and good citizenry.” This year, the INC is celebrating its 98th Anniversary, with activities designed to prepare its millions of followers for the church’s centennial in 2014. INC was established by “Ka” (Brother) Felix Y. Manalo, its first Executive Minister, in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila, on July 14, 1914.

From a handful followers in 1914, the INC has grown to become one of the country’s biggest religious denominations, counting millions of members in its more than 5,400 congregations in the Philippines and in 90 countries worldwide. INC started to set up congregations in 1916. A Visayan congregation was set up in Cebu in 1938 and in Mindanao in 1946. The first concrete chapel was set up in Sampaloc, Manila, in 1948. It started its first overseas mission n 1968. The INC Central Office building was built in Quezon City in 1971 and the Central Temple was added 15 years later. It set up congregations in Hawaii and San Francisco, USA, in 1973. The Ministerial Institute of Development (now New Era University) was founded in 1974.

The post of Ka Felix, who passed away on April 12, 1963, was taken over by his son, Ka Eraño G. Manalo. Upon the latter’s demise on August 31, 2009, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Bro. Eduardo “Ka Ed” V. Manalo, now INC Executive Minister.

To mark its 98th Anniversary, the INC held a medical-dental mission, dubbed “Lingap sa Mamamayan” (Aid to Humanity) in Baseco, Parola, and Isla Putting Bato in Tondo on July 7, 2012. The mission made it to the Guinness world records. The largest – 4,128 people – dental health check, higher than that recorded in India in 2009; the biggest number – 8,026 – of blood pressure readings taken in eight hours; and biggest number 5,217 – of blood glucose level tests conducted in eight hours, higher than the past Guinness records of 7,203 in Kuwait and 3,573 in India, respectively. INC has outreach programs on education, youth development, family counseling, and community extension. It assists during calamities and disasters. INC is building a 50,000-seat indoor arena in Ciudad de Victoria, Bulacan, in time for its centennial celebration in 2014.

We greet the spiritual leadership of the Iglesia ni Cristo, headed by its Executive Minister, Eduardo V. Manalo, other Officials and Members, on their 98th Anniversary. We join them in their mission to bring the faithful closer to God and to salvation. May God bless us all. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

    Cavite Lauds Iglesia On Anniversary
    By ANTHONY GIRON
    July 25, 2012, 7:07pm

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — The Sangguniang Panglalawigan has passed an ordinance recognizing the 98th founding anniversary celebration of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) tomorrow.

The recognition was contained in Draft Ordinance 018-2012 that was unanimously approved by the board members under Vice Governor Recto Cantimbuhan during last Monday’s session. The ordinance was sponsored by BM Ramon “Jolo” Revilla III.

The ordinance extends warm greetings and congratulations to the INC on their anniversary celebration.

Cavite is one of the provinces with the most number of Iglesia temples. Almost all cities and crowded towns of the province have at least one church each. Many residents in the area are Iglesia members.

Governor Jonvic Remulla, Cavite congressmen, mayors and other local executives also greeted and congratulated the religious group on their anniversary. Many officials posted greetings on the streets of their province and would place congratulatory adverstisements in national newspapers.

INC is the largest independent Christian Church in the Philippines and the entire Asia. Traditionally, the religious group holds special worship service called “Pasalamat” (Thanksgiving) and the Grand Evangelical Missions in the country as part of the anniversary celebration.

This year’s theme focuses on "Puspusang Pagpapagalanap ng mga Salita ng Diyos" (Intense Propagation of the Words of God.)

INC Day is a special national working holiday.

Felix Y. Manalo registered the Iglesia Ni Cristo in the Philippines on July 27, 1914.

It has since grown into a large independent church in the country and Asia through the years.

Iglesia has now more than 5,000 congregations in the Philippines and more than 600 overseas. It has spread to 96 countries and territories and draws over 10 million followers in the Philippines alone. (Anthony Giron)

Local News: SP Congratulates, Lauds INC’s 98th Anniversary
Submitted by Edith Colmo on Thu, 07/26/2012 - 08:04 Bacolod City Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Caesar Distrito Edith Colmo El Cid Familiaran Iglesia Ni Cristo Local News

Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City have approved in yesterday’s session the resolution authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito, congratulating and honoring the Inglesia ni Cristo (INC) for its 98th Founding Anniversary today, July 27.

    Distrito recalls that the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) was formally established on July 27, 1914, within its first chapel in Punta Santa Ana , and its expansion continued under the stewardship of Felix Ysagun Manalo, which he began establishing congregations throughout the country, including the Visayas and Mindanao. In 1949, the Iglesia built its first central office and official residence at the Executive Minister on Riverside Street, San Juan, Metro Manila. The congregation grew from approximately 85,000 in 1936 to 200,000 in 1954. By 1970, the INC had about 500,000 members and was established in almost every province in the Philippines. When Executive Minister Eraño Manalo assumed the leadership of INC, he began to travel to various congregations, officiating at worship services, and staging religious rallies. Over the next 30 years, the Iglesia established more than 4,000 locals and 100 districts. The Iglesia became the fastest growing church in the Philippines and it expanded to other countries, beginning with the United States, and it has now radio and TV stations operating 24 hours;

INC as we had seen. Distrito said, had grown to more than 5,000 congregations in the Philippines and more than 600 abroad. The INC now has local congregations in 89 countries and territories, and its members belonging to 102 nationalities and ethnic groups.

With the passing away of its second Executive Minister, the much loved Eraño Manalo, on August 31, 2009, the leadership of the church passed on to his son, Eduardo V. Manalo, who had served as Deputy Executive Minister, and is serving until this present time.

In Bacolod City alone, Distrito quantifies, Iglesia ni Cristo has more than 22 locals with tens of thousands of members who had become part of the integral social dimension of the community, contributing so much in the spiritual, economic and social well-being of the entire populace.

From the beginning, the INC has continuously extended help not only to the well-being of local townspeople but also to protect the environment through its various humanitarian services and outreach programs, such as its "Lingap sa Mamamayan (Filipino: Care for the People)", offering free medical and dental services, community cleanups and tree planting projects

He therefore resolved to congratulate and honor INC on this special occasion, and furnish copies of the resolution to the Central Office of INC, as her district office at the Shopping Center and all their local churches in Bacolod City.

The co-authors were Councilors El Cid Familiaran, Em Ang, Al Victor Espino, Mona Dia Jardin, and Jose Carlos Lopez.*

Iglesia Ni Cristo in Sydney marks 98th year with musical
July 28, 2012 | Filed under: Featured | Posted by: Violi Calvert

Yesterday, July 27, was the 98th anniversary of the foundation of Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ). This big milestone, shy of two years of being around for a century, is celebrated by INC congregations around the world.

    The ministers and choir members...
In Sydney, the INC faithful gathered in The Hills Centre in Castle Hill to celebrate the event.

My 93-year old mother and I were fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend this big event, named “You’re Invited” after the Evangelising musical it featured in the celebration’s program which started at 6.45pm.

Some of the attendees at The Hills Performing Centre
The Hills Performing Centre was abuzz with happy conversations and laughter as a big crowd of people waited to go in.

As my mother and I were ushered in the hall, I noted that the choir (which I later learned was 120-strong), all dressed in white tops or jackets, were already on the stage. There was an information video with interesting details being shown. It was interesting to know that since INC was founded and formally registered in the Philippine Government by Felix Y Manalo on July 27, 1914, at present it is now in 93 countries and seven territories comprising 110 nationalities.

Some minutes later, the INC ministers from various Metro Sydney localities went up the stage and seated in front of the four rows of singers. Then the choir led the crowd in singing hymns.

INC in Australia District Minister Ranniel Serreno read parts of the bible and other books which prophesied the establishment of the church in a place made up of islands in the Far East and that church being INC.

Performers and directorial and technical crew
Mr Serreno’s reading of the passages of the bible foreshadowing the church also growing to the Far West and at the same time reminding the followers of the end of the earth, was spell-binding. As the auditorium-capacity crowd listened in silence, one could not but feel an almost ethereal sensation. His emotion-laden prayer which thanked and asked God for more blessings to the INC, all the members, and guests was responded to by INC members with “yes” or “amen”.

The preaching and prayer were followed by a video showing INC’s various initiatives involving the community in different parts of the globe.

L-R: Verma, Violi Calvert, Charito Guasch, Neria Soliman, Bobby Lastica, Tom Baena and Rowena Baena
Then the awaited musical “You’re Invited” — with performance by the young members of the church. The musical depicted how the young people learn to form a relationship with God through being involved in bible study groups. The group had the crowd enthralled with their powerful rendition of songs and precision-synchronised choreography, and no doubt appreciated the messages of God being loving and waiting for the believers to join him in the Kingdom in heaven.

L-R: Romy Cayabyab, Violi Calvert, Bobby Lastica, Tom Baena, Rowena Baena, and INC ministers Ranniel Serreno and Ress Timbang
Aside from enjoying the presentation, Mother and I were glad to also meet Mrs. Senen Alma, the 92-yeard old mother-in-law of Romy Cayabyab. It was great to meet up again with Romy’s wife, Verma, and see as well a few members of the Filipino-Australian media and community organisations: Neria and Doc Tito Soliman, Tom and Rowena Baena, and Bobby Lastica.

    The writer and her mother...
Congratulations to everyone in INC on this important milestone as well as for a very successful celebration.

I am a Catholic but feel comfortable to say that INC plays a great role in the community through worship and initiatives which build lives. My view is that both religions promote the Holy Presence.
