Iran Closing Down Tehran Evangelical Church

Evangelical Christians in Iran's capital Tehran were without a church building Sunday, June 10, after Iranian security forces closed it down as part of a wider crackdown, Iranian Christians and activists told BosNewsLife.

The 100-strong Jannat Abad Church, which is part of the evangelical Assemblies of God domination, had been operating in the building for some 15 years, Christians said.

It reportedly provided two services per week, prayer sessions and Bible studies.

Iranian Christians said the order came from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Intelligence branch on Tuesday, June 5.

A spokesperson of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran group told BosNewsLife that the government action is part of a "drive to close churches".

This "is an assault on free religious practice, in violation of Iran’s international commitments, and a sign of growing religious intolerance within the Iranian government," added spokesperson Hadi Ghaemi. Read more

    Protestants’ crisis
    By JPOST EDITORIAL 07/05/2012 22:47

Presbyterians, Methodists and other mainline denominations would do well to reexamine their policies on Israel in light of age-old moral teachings.

    Photo: REUTERS

Once again, a mainline Protestant Church is threatening to punish Israel for its purported policies vis-à-vis the Palestinians. This time, it is the Presbyterians’ turn.

Toward the end of its General Assembly taking place between June 30 and July 7, the Presbyterian Church (USA) will vote on a motion calling to divest from companies whose products are supposedly used “in violations of Palestinian human rights.”

Why are the mainline Protestant churches so susceptible to Israel-bashing? Unlike more fundamentalist Protestants, mainline denominations tend to have a less literal reading of the Gospel. Theology is more malleable and, as Walter Russell Mead put it in a 2006 essay in Foreign Policy titled “God’s Country,” liberal Protestants tend to “evanesce into secularism.”

They may be environmentalists belonging to the Sierra Club and Greenpeace or human rights activists involved with Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

Their sincere desire to pursue justice might be motivated by faith but implementation often puts them under the sway of organizations with rabidly anti-Zionist or even anti-American agendas. One study by the Institute on Religion and Democracy found that 37 percent of the statements made by mainline Protestant churches on human rights abuses between 2000 and 2003 focused on Israel. No other country came in for such frequent criticism, though the US was a close second at 32%. China, North Korea and Saudi Arabia were not critiqued at all.

The same amorphous theology that has blurred the boundaries between mainline Protestantism and left-wing secularism has also led to a steady decline in membership.

As sociologists of religion have pointed out, the more demanding and unambiguous a religion’s principles, the more respect and commitment it is likely to engender.

Who can take seriously liberal Protestant denominations that consistently fail to make moral distinctions that set them apart from radical progressive secularism? For their own good, Presbyterians, Methodists and other mainline denominations would do well to reexamine their policies on Israel in light of age-old moral teachings.

Perhaps they will find their own distinctive voice resonating with a more balanced view of the conflict between Israel and Palestinians. They might even conclude that Israelis have the right to defend themselves.

    CHINA
Beijing launches new campaign against Protestant house churches

    by Wang Zhicheng

The authorities are collecting information on members of the clergy and believers in order to force them into the official Protestant organisation, the party-controlled Movement of Three Autonomies. The process should be completed before the end of the year. Underground communities will thus be cleaned up and eliminated as a secret paper indicates. Catholics fear they are next in line.

Beijing (AsiaNews) - China has launched an all-out campaign against house churches, ministers and believers that should be completed in ten years, the China Aid Association said based on Communist Party sources and documents.

In the past 30 years, Protestant house churches have become a major phenomenon, with 50 to 80 million members who meet in homes or otherwise private places to pray, carry out ceremonies and hold assemblies. Their love for free worship has led them to reject official Protestant Churches, guilty in their eyes of "worshipping the party" rather than God.

During the same period, Chinese authorities have tried to suppress this uncontrolled movement by jailing pastors, torturing believers and destroying homes and places of worship. A campaign to force underground communities to join official organisations (such as the Movement of Three Autonomies or MTA) was launched before the Beijing Olympics.

According to documents cited by China Aid, the new eradication campaign includes:

    1. January-June 2012, conduct thorough, intensive and secret investigations of house churches throughout the country and create files on them.

    2. In two to three years, concentrate on cleaning up the house churches that have been investigated and have had files created.

    3. In 10 years' time, completely wipe out house churches.

Clergymen and believers can testify form experience that registration and filing information are being carried out with precision. Police and officials with the State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA) are interrogating religious leaders and believers to find more about their activities and are actively "advising" them to join the MTA.

At the same time, seminars on "patriotism" are being organised for believers to induce them to join official communities, submit to the government and obey the party.

"Training courses" have been set up for the clergy who will be issued permits to preach.

At the National Work Conference on Religious Affairs on 9 January 2012, SARA Deputy Director Jiang Jianyong said that the process of certifying and creating files on clergy would be completed this year. Afterwards, "Regulations on Religious Affairs" would come into effect.

Under the new rules, any religious activity outside of the state would become "illegal" and anyone involved in it could be prosecuted. Underground communities would thus be cleaned up and then wiped out.

This way, SARA's chief Wang Zuo'an's prophecy would come to pass. In October 2011, he had said that the problem of house churches "doesn't exist."

Now many underground Catholics fear that they will be next. In recent months, police have arrested, detained or invited priests and believers for a "friendly chat" advising them to join the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, an official government body that has been condemned by the pope as incompatible with the Catholic faith.

Ayon sa Biblia, ang mga MAGDARAYA ay silang hindi nagpapahayag na si Jesucristo mismo ang Ama na nagkatawang-tao.

2John 1:7 "For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist."

1John 5:20 "And we know that the Son of God is come (SECOND WITNESS), and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ (FIRST WITNESS). This is the true God, and eternal life."

Sinabi ng Anak na si Jesucristo nang Siya ay nasa lupa na Siya at ang Ama ay iisa at siya din. Pinaniwalaan ba Siya agad ng mga alagad? Hindi, lalo pa't sinabi Niya ang ganito:

John 5:31 "If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true."

Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Ang tanggapin ng tao ang kaloob ng Espiritu Santo, ito ay ang pagbibigay ni Cristo ng Kaniyang Espiritu sa tao. Kaya nga:

Romans 8:9 "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."

John 3:5 "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."

Sa isang taong ligtas na hinatulan sa Kaniyang pagkamatay (unang paghuhukom), ang Espiritu ng Dios na sumasa tao ay bumabalik sa Kaniya (dahil ligtas na ang tao):

Ecclesiastes 12:7 "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."

Revelation 19:6 "And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth."

Revelation 19:7 "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb (LORD GOD) is come, and his wife (the elect ones - both male and female..."there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus" - Galatians 3:28) hath made herself ready."

    CONCLUSION:

Galatians 3:29 "And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."

Iglesia ni Cristo breaks 3 Guinness records
    By Donna Cueto-Ybañez
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    3:23 am | Monday, July 9th, 2012

    “You are now officially amazing!”
With this declaration, Guinness world record’s official adjudicator Tarika Vara certified that the international aid for humanity, or “lingap sa mamamayan,” which the Iglesia ni Cristo’s (INC) held in Manila on July 7, had broken three Guinness world records.

The whole-day medical-dental mission in the capital’s huge informal settlers’ community broke the world record for the largest dental health check.

It also broke two other world records—for the biggest number of blood pressure (BP) readings taken in eight hours and for the most numerous blood glucose level (BGL) tests, also conducted in eight hours.

The feat was also a win for the Philippines, organizers said.

    Parola, Tondo
At the closing of the medical-dental mission in Parola, Tondo, on Saturday night, Vara announced that she and the Guinness partner auditor for the event had recorded 4,128 people who benefited from the dental health check, beating the record of 3,377 previously held by India.

Guinness also announced a record 8,026 BP readings and 5,217 BGL tests, which were conducted in cooperation with the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation.

The Kuwait Heart Foundation previously held the record of 7,203 BP readings taken in eight hours. The foundation achieved the record on Oct. 28, 2011.

The previous record for the most numerous BGL tests in eight hours was 3,573. It was achieved at an event organized by the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation in Bangalore, India on Nov. 13, 2011.

“This was a truly extraordinary event,” Vara said of the INC achievement, as she made the announcement.

“I have truly not seen anything like this not just as a representative of Guinness world record, but in my life. I’ve never seen an organization so dedicated to helping other people free of charge all day from 10 past 10 in the morning to 10 past nine at night,” she said.

Vara said she did not know of any other organization in the world that was able to break three records in just one event.

    Guinness seal

“I would like to say that I was extremely pleased (and) moved, and I’m just completely humbled by the fact that you gave your services today. The standards were incredibly high. All of you ensured that you were following the Guinness world record guidelines which I was adamant you had to. So, thank you for listening to me. You are now, officially amazing!” Vara said.

    Medicines, relief bags

She raised the “Guinness world record” seal amid shouts of joy from volunteers, organizers and beneficiaries who stayed on for the announcement.

Aside from providing medical and dental consultations, the lingap sa mamamayan distributed medicines to thousands of residents in Tondo, particularly those from Parola, Baseco and Isla Puting Bato.

Volunteers from the INC and the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation also distributed 50,000 bags of relief that contained 5 kilos of rice each, noodles and canned goods.

In a statement, INC executive minister Eduardo V. Manalo said the INC members were doing this in accordance with the biblical teachings to love and care for others, especially those who have less in life.

The aid for humanity in Tondo was also done to commemorate the INC’s 98th anniversary this month.

    Homeless

The INC holds regular aid-for-humanity activities, especially in areas stricken by calamities. Just two months ago, fire hit the Parola compound and Isla Puting Bato, leaving at least 5,000 residents homeless.

Glicerio B. Santos Jr., INC general auditor, said the aid for humanity in Tondo was the biggest so far.

Some 200 doctors, 600 paramedics, and hundreds of nurses and other volunteers, led by Glicerio Santos III, helped to make the daylong outreach a success.

Organizers said close to 100,000 people, most of them living in the slums of Tondo, flocked to the event.

The aid for humanity also provided X-ray, ultrasound, 2D-echo and laboratory services, and set up 10 hospital beds where minor surgeries could be performed. Aside from medicines, several wheelchairs were also given to needy folks.

Vara said this was an “incredible feat” because the thousands who had flocked to the area, had been given proper attention by the doctors, nurses and paramedics, complete with the necessary medication to address their ailments.

    Hospital setting

“And it wasn’t just about achieving Guinness world records,” she said, noting that there was treatment and assessment of what was wrong with the people who came to the vast makeshift structure that emulated a hospital setting at the heart of Tondo’s slums.

The distribution of relief started at around 8 a.m. Medical and dental services opened at 10:10 a.m. and were conducted for eight hours straight. Counters from SGV, Guinness’ partner in the event, ensured strict compliance with Guinness guidelines.

At 6:10 p.m., the counting was officially stopped, although the checkup continued for hundreds still in line.

An International Church: The Church Of Christ (Iglesia Ni Cristo) Gives Humanitarian Services to Thousands
    By reynold29 | Posted July 7, 2012 | Manila

The Church Of Christ (Iglesia Ni Cristo) conducted an International Aid for Humanity or 'Lingap Initiatives'. It aims to provide Medical and Dental Services, Relief Goods etc. to serve thousands of people. The event was held at Parola, Tondo, Manila, Philippines in a one hectare vacant lot sold by the Church of Christ. As part of its free services, this Event will also attempt to break the Guiness World Record of Most Blood Glucose Level Test in 8-Hours and most Dental check ups and As of 2 PM, International Aid for Humanity already served 1,567 Dental check ups.

The event is an impressive work of a wonderfully considered only a small organization but with hearts that care, and help people without anything in return. The Church of Christ considered as a small religion in the Philippines is now an International Organizations that scattered in 90 + countries around the world. Many people around the world wonder how this Church did all the triumph and success in a short period of time and it is very very impressive.

And despite the economic downturn, and many churches are closing, the Iglesia Ni Cristo continue purchasing land and closed churches to continue their worship and propagate their faith. Currently, according to Bro. Glicerio Santos Jr.., Iglesia Ni Cristo's General Auditor, there are 92 chapels (chapels from Catholic Churches and Protestants) that are sold by the Iglesia Ni Cristo. These events in the history of Iglesia Ni Cristo is undeniable that there is an Almighty, that moves and guides and in complete faith and unity of all believers.

Super Bantamweight King of Kings - Nonito Donaire

    by Val Soliman

Super Bantamweight Division is hot. I could tell why HBO makes sense when they pulled Nonito's fight with a mexican fighter named Cristian Mijares. The Ring Magazine's ranked #4 best pound for pound fighter, WBO Super Bantamweight Champ Nonito Donaire is now set to face another king in his division, the IBF Super Bantamweight Champ Jeffrey “Mongoose” Mathebula of South Africa in a 122 pound unification bout.

Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti told that the fight will be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on July 7. Manager Cameron Dunkin also told Nonito wanted a better opposition. A fight that would motivate him, a unification bout. Although Dunkin also stated that this fight with Mathebula would motivate him but it's a "dangerous fight, a scary fight".

Jeffrey Mathebula is ranked as the sixth best super bantamweight in the world by Ring Magazine. He holds the record of 26 wins (14KO's), with 3 losses and 2draws. Mathebula lost in a controversial split decision against Celestino Caballero in Panama back in April 30, 2009. Mathebula is 5'10", a tall orthodox fighter in the super bantamweight. he doesn't have much power but he has the craft to stand against Nonito.

This will mark Mathebula's first fight in the United States and it will be covered by HBO. Donaire's next fight was suppose to be in the Marquez undercard but Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez declined TOPRANK's preferred opponents - Zab Judah, Mercito Gesta and Brandon Rios. Marquez's next fight will be rescheduled. Cameron Dunkin is now working on having Brandon Rios on the Under card of the Donaire-Mathebula fight.

Nonito will capture another belt (IBF Super Bantamweight) should he defeat Mathebula. Donaire could have possibly cruised a victory over Mijares (who was preferred by TOPRANK), but really there's not much career boost for that win. We hope that TOPRANK would not end up marinating the Donaire - Rigondeaux fight so much like they did with Lopez - Gamboa. I would be easier to make a fight with Rigondeaux than Mares because TOPRANK would have to share profits with Golden Boy Promotions, which is very unlikely.

Matherbula would be a good test for Donaire's boxing skills. We saw how Donaire can get impatient with a technical and defensive fighters such as Omar Andres Narvaez and more recently with Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. Mathebula has a reach advantage and if jabs well and does the good counter-punching, he would give Nonito a tough time. Speed and power would be an edge for Nonito that that I think would help him nail the victory.

Having WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux and WBC Champ Abner Mares on the same division(who both called out Donaire for a fight), it would definitely motivate Nonito to strive and train harder to conquer the other Kings in his division. If Donaire can unify the belts, he can say "I'm the King of the Kings". Rigondeaux and Mares would be a tougher challenge but he has to take them one by one.

DONAIRE vs MATHEBULA: BATTLE OF FASHION STATEMENTS

By Ed de la Vega, DDS
    PhilBoxing.com
    Wed, 04 Jul 2012

Early Tuesday afternoon, WBO super bantamweight world champion Nonito Donaire Jr and his opponent IBF super bantamweight world champion Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa attended the LA media work out at the Fortune Gym in West Hollywood sporting two vastly different outfits with messages printed in them.

Through their outfits both fighters were telling the world what they feel in their hearts.

Mathebula wore a dark training outfit with his message embroidered in the right chest area. It say: “Undisputed King of World Champions.”

I would not call the South African self-centered but certainly it is apparent that he believes he is the king of kings!

For a fighter who only fought twice outside of his country, that is indeed a strong statement.

But until he proves it on top of the ring on Saturday against Nonito Donaire Jr, his fashion statement will only remain as such - just a statement.

On the other hand Donaire wore a simple white t-shirt with a VADA logo in front with the following statement at the back: “24/7/365 Nothing to Hide, Everything to Prove.”

Doniare’s statement is in obvious reference to the VADA Testing procedures he voluntarily took to show the world that he is a clean athlete.

It may also be a challenge to all those fighters out there who are “suspects”. What he is telling them is to come out clean and give back boxing the dignity it has lost due to some cheaters.

That at the very least in admirable!

Palace lauds new unified champ Donaire

MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang on Sunday congratulated Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire for unifying two super bantamweight belts after defeating Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa.

Donaire won via unanimous decision to become the unified World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight champion.

"Congratulations kay Nonito Donaire, si 'Filipino Flash.' Natalo po n’ya si Jeffrey Mathebula for the unification bout," said Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte.

"Kasi ang intindihin po natin ay ang WBO champion po in that weight is si Nonito, tapos 'yung si IBF naman po si Mathebula. So now he (Donaire) holds both belts," Valte added.

Donaire knocked down Mathebula with a cracking left hand towards the end of the fourth round and won by a wide margin in the scorecards of all three judges.

"All through the 12 rounds, mukhang malinaw po doon sa decision 'nung mga judges, at mukang malinaw po ang kanilang mga mata, all in favor of Nonito Donaire," Valte said.

Valte said it was a good thing that there was no controversy in Donaire's victory.

Last June 9, Filipino fight king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao was stunned when he lost via split decision to unbeaten American boxer Timothy Bradley Jr.

Most boxing media and fight fans felt that Pacquiao won that fight comfortably.

But there was no controversy this time as Donaire clearly beat Mathebula, who went into defensive mode for most of the later rounds.

Donaire is now looking forward to fighting Japanese champion Toshiaki Nishioka, who holds the World Boxing Council super bantamweight belt.

Iglesia ni Cristo breaks 3 Guinness records

The activities of MODERN CHRISTIANITY, represented by the religious sects that compose it, are varied. These activities may be classified into: religious, social, civic, and political.

    RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

Of course, the main activity of all religious sects centers on the religious. This refers to the regular religious services on certain days like Sunday, Saturday, and other days of the week. The services are varied in each denomination. They may take the form of ceremonies like Masses, processions, or such activities as Bible studies, preaching, singing of hymns, giving of testimonies, among others.

Included also in the religious activities are the different evangelical work or ministries: radio, television, religious rallies, distribution of printed materials, either free or for sale, to promote every denomination’s doctrines. Also classified as religious activity is fund-raising for the construction of chapels, churches, and cathedrals, and the establishment of seminaries and Bible schools for the training of pastors, priests, and ministers.

    SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

MODERN CHRISTIANITY, through the religious sects composing it, brings to attention the different social activities. Included here are the baptismal, wedding, and house-warming or blessing ceremonies, followed by reception and revelry.

    CIVIC ACTIVITIES

MODERN CHRISTIANITY does not only engage in religious and social, but also in civic activities. Almost all religious denominations have their respective civic programs. We find them conducting their own charitable works on many occasions such as Christmas, and in time of calamities like earthquakes, floods, typhoons, and the like. The larger religious sects have elaborate projects such as the establishment of orphanages, home for the aged, hospitals, and schools, and caring for the unwed mothers.

    POLITICAL ACTIVITIES

MODERN CHRISTIANITY, through some religious sects, also finds itself actively engaged in politics. Religious leaders and the laity take an indirect and, in some cases, a direct hand in the political affairs of certain countries. Political leaders of some countries are influenced, in varying degrees, by the political activity of some religious sects. Elections and major political decisions cannot shed their religious color in some underdeveloped countries.

The foregoing, in a nutshell, are the different and major activities of Christianity Today.

In contrast with MODERN CHRISTIANITY, early Christians had very limited activity. This was confined to purely spiritual work.

MODERN CHRISTIANITY, through the religious sects that compose it, interprets the following literally:

Matthew 25:35 "For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me."

This is the inspiration for the many charitable works of religious organizations and their individual members today. Fund-raising and distribution of material goods, and the supply of basic needs to victims of calamities such as earthquakes, floods, typhoons, fire, and the like. This is also the basis for the establishment of orphanages, hospitals, and schools, and care for the aged and unwed mothers. Of course, these are not bad things. They are unquestionably sublime undertakings. Distinction, however, must be made between spiritual and civic matters. The Bible deals with SPIRITUAL MATTERS. No wonder, nowhere in the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John nor in the Acts of the Apostles can we find Jesus Christ and His apostles ever doing these things literally-physically.

There was even a prophecy for the Messiah providing freedom to the prisoners:

Isaiah 42:7 "To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house."

No account is ever recorded in the Bible of our Lord during His entire ministry freeing a single physical prisoner. But let us remember that this prophecy of "freeing the prisoners" must be fulfilled. This was fulfilled, not physically but spiritually. Our Lord set the term for the freedom of the prisoners:

John 8:32 "And ye shall know the truth (JESUS CHRIST), and the truth shall make you free."

The Jews did not understand the spiritual language of our Lord. They could not admit that they were in bondage to any man. They professed that they were the children of Abraham, knowing that the children of Abraham were free. They were indeed ignorant, spiritually blind and spiritually deaf, not knowing that being children of Abraham does not only mean physical offspring but spiritual descendants as well:

Galatians 3:7 "Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham."

But the Jews were spiritually blind indeed for right there in the book of Isaiah, the spiritual meaning of his prophecy about freedom was manifested:

Isaiah 49:9 "That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. 10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them."

    1. "Say to the prisoners" does not refer to the physical but to the spiritual prisoners. They are the people bound by falsehood and misrepresentation - for it is only the truth that can set them free.

    2. "Go forth to them that are in darkness" does not refer to people who are deprived of the physical light of the sun, or the moon, or the stars, or the light invented by man. God is referring to those who are in the spiritual darkness, those who cannot see the spiritual light. The spiritual light is Jesus Christ (John 8:12), and Jesus Christ is the truth (John 14:6) and the Word (Revelation 19:13).

    3. "Feed in the ways" refers to spiritual feeding with the living bread.

    4. "Pasture for the sheep" points to Jesus Christ shepherding the spiritual sheep -- the real Christians. But Christ is nowhere to be found, for He is a spirit (2 Cor. 3:17). He is, however, present, for He is represented by the Word of God. It is the Word of God that is spiritually shepherding the real Christians.

    5. The spiritual sheep will never get hungry, for they will be fed with the living bread and with the spiritual springs of water.

Peso is ‘top pick’ of Morgan Stanley
    By: Michelle V. Remo
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    3:44 am | Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

International financial services firm Morgan Stanley has selected the peso as its latest “top pick” currency, citing the favorable economic conditions and significant dollar liquidity of the Philippines.

In its latest report on currencies, Morgan Stanley told its yield-seeking clients that the Philippine peso has so far outperformed other emerging market currencies and was likely to keep appreciating against the dollar over the near term.

It sees the peso strengthening to 40.75 against the greenback by the end of this year and rise further to 39.50:$1 by the end of next year.

“The [Philippine peso] continues to outperform its peers in the region because of its robust fundamentals,” Morgan Stanley said in the report distributed to clients. “Capital inflows [to the Philippines] are picking up as investors are attracted not only by strong growth conditions but also the improving credit position of the [Aquino administration].”

In the first quarter, the Philippine economy grew 6.4 percent from a year ago, faster than the 4.9 percent registered in the same period last year. The Philippines’ growth in the first three months was the second-fastest in Asia after China’s 8.1 percent.

The outstanding debt of the national government as a percentage of the country’s gross domestic product has dropped over the years from a peak of 84 percent in 2004 to only about 50 percent today.

Economic officials said the declining debt burden showed the improved capability of the Philippines to settle its debts to foreign creditors and bondholders.

Morgan Stanley also cited the improving dollar liquidity of the country that has made it more capable of meeting its foreign currency-denominated obligations.

“[The peso] is supported by a positive macro dynamic of above-trend growth and external surplus—no other currency in [the Asian region excluding Japan] has this macro support right now. In addition, the [peso] is supported by a twin surplus,” Morgan Stanley said. The bank was referring to the surplus in the Philippines’ current and capital accounts. A surplus indicates that inflows of dollars and other foreign currencies exceeded the outflows.

The BSP earlier reported that the current account of the Philippines posted a surplus of $882 million in the first quarter. The current account is a record of the inflows and outflows of dollars and other foreign currencies resulting mainly from export earnings, remittances, payment for imports, settlement of foreign debt.

The capital account registered a surplus of $962 million during the period. Capital account covers inflows and outflows resulting from portfolio and direct investments.

The favorable outlook on the Philippine economy by entities like Morgan Stanley has been credited for the increased appetite for peso-denominated portfolio assets, mainly stocks and bonds.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index hit a record high last week, breaking into the 5,300 mark amid optimism on the economy. The rise in demand for peso-denominated portfolio assets was credited for the peso’s rise to a four-year high of 41.68 against the dollar last week.

19.7% exports growth in May 2012 highest since 2011
A July 10, 2012 press release from the National Economic and Development Authority

NEDA sees improving electronics exports in coming months

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said that the exports growth of 19.7 percent in May this year was the highest year-on-year growth since January 2011.

The NEDA made this statement, after the National Statistics Office (NSO) released preliminary report that export earnings in May 2012 reached $4.9 billion, compared to $4.1 billion in May 2011.

“For the first five months of 2012, export earnings already rose by 8.4 percent to $22.4 billion from $20.7 billion in the same period in 2011,” said Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan.

Citing NSO figures, Balisacan said that exports in May surged on account of higher overseas sales of manufactures (28.9%) and forest products (14.8%). On the other hand, he said that lower export receipts from petroleum (-81.7%), minerals (-16.6%), and total agro-based products (-2.7%) partially moderated the export growth in May 2012.

Meanwhile, the NSO said electronics exports amounted to only $1.87 billion in May 2012 compared to $1.89 billion in the same month last year.

“On a positive note, there still appears to be good prospects for growth in the electronics sector, as indicated by improving book-to-bill ratio in Japan and a parity of above 1.0 in the U.S. In fact, the book-to-bill ratio in U.S. has been above 1.0 for four consecutive months, reaching 1.05 in May 2012,” the Cabinet official said.

A book-to-bill ratio or parity of above 1.0 indicates an upbeat market, as demand or bookings outpace supply or billings. On the other hand, a parity of less than 1.0 suggests weak demand.

“Industry sources have said that revenues coming from the semiconductor sector will be sustained by strong demand for consumer-oriented products, such as mobile phones and media tablets, as well as the entry of new players in the electronics industry this year,” said Balisacan.

Under manufactures, Balisacan said that higher earnings were noted under machinery and transport equipment (168.7%), miscellaneous manufactures (965.5%), other electronics (147.3%), iron and steel (329.0%), processed food and beverages (26.2%), furniture and fixtures (67.0%), baby carriage and toys (22.7%), travel goods and handbags (193.0%), and textile products (8.7%).

“The increase in overseas sales of these commodities more than offset the contractions observed in chemicals (-13.1%), wood manufactures (-11.9%), garments (-5.9%), non-metallic minerals (-22.7%), and electronic products (-0.7%),” said Balisacan, who is also NEDA Director-General, added that

Aside from manufactures, the NSO said that outbound shipments in May 2012 were also supported by forest products, which registered a 14.8-percent growth, even as petroleum, minerals, and total agro-based products declined by 81.7 percent, 16.6 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively.

“While some of these sectors experienced lower shipments in terms of volume, their contractions can also be partly attributed to declining prices in the international market. In May 2011, the average international price of crude oil fell (-3.7%). In the minerals sector, the price of copper in the global market fell (-11.2%) on concerns of benign global demand and rising inventories. As to agro-based products, there were steep drops in the international prices of coconut oil (-44.9%) and sugar (-5.2%),” said Balisacan.

He added that the steep drop in sugar prices came after India said it will allow exports of raw sugar, and that exports of coconut oil were adversely affected even if volume improved by 27.2 percent.

The NSO also reported that Japan was the top destination of the Philippine exports in May 2012, accounting for 23.0 percent of total export receipts. The value of merchandise exports to Japan, mainly of semiconductors, wood manufactures, and electronic equipment and parts, reached $1.1 billion in May 2012 or 81.5 percent higher compared to $624.3 million in May 2011.

Japan was followed by the United States, with a 14.5-percent share, Thailand (11.5%), China (11.4%), and Hong Kong (7.0%).

According to the NSO, total export revenues from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan accounted for 21.2 percent of the country’s total merchandise exports. Meanwhile, shipments to ASEAN and European Union made up 22.5 percent and 9.8 percent, respectively.

In a press statement, the company said its ‘All-Natural Fish Frankfurter’ got the nod of judges from 13 of the most prestigious European culinary and sommelier associations like the Maîtres Cuisiniers of France and Belgium, Academy of Culinary Arts, Hellenic Chefs’ Association, Académie Culinaire of France, Verband der Köche Deutschlands, Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe, the Federación de Asociaciones de Cocineros of Spain, Federerazione dei Cuochi Italiana, Portuguese Chefs Association, Årets Kock of Sweden, Euro-Toques and the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI).

Made from 100 percent fish meat, Fisher Farms All-Natural Fish Frankfurter is the first of its kind in the world and does not have artificial preservatives and chemical ingredients. It meets US Food and Drugs Administration standards of ‘healthy’ levels of fats, sodium, and cholesterol and mimics the meaty, spicy taste of frankfurters without any trace of ‘fishiness’.

The Superior Taste Award is one of the most sought-after awards in the food and beverage world. Trend Magazine describes the award as the “Michelin Guide of Food”. The award is highly recognized by most food companies in more than 80 countries.
Fisher Farms CEO Imelda Madarang received the award with Technical Director Katherine Buenaventura.

“Fisher Farms is honored to be the first Filipino food company to receive this distinction,” says Madarang. “We hope this award highlights Filipinos’ ability to create innovative world-class products out of our indigenous agricultural and aquatic resources.”

Fisher Farms, Inc. is the largest aquaculture processor in the Philippines. A fully-integrated fish processor with hundreds of bangus, pompano, and tilapia fish cages throughout the country, Fisher Farms exports fish products to the United States, Canada, the Middle East, and Europe. It has established strong business ties with large quick service restaurant chains in the Philipines and created a wide range of innovative and export-quality fish products like fish sausages, cold cuts, and microwaveable meals.

SOUTHEAST ASIA’S BEST. The Philippine team clinches the 2012 Seaba title by trouncing host Thailand, 74-52, Saturday, July 7, 2012 in Chiang Mai City. Photo from Assistant coach Josh Reyes' Instagram account.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines sealed a tournament-long domination with a 74-52 rout of host Thailand, which clinched 2012 SEABA championship and the lone berth to the Fiba Asia Cup Saturday in Chiang Mai City.

The squad, composed of select amateur players, standouts from Alaska in the PBA and holdovers from the previous Smart Gilas, swept all its four assignments and the Philippines cemented its stature as basketball’s best in Southeast Asia.

The Philippines enjoyed the lead over the hapless Thais all throughout the contest but eased up a bit on the host late in the payoff period.

A trip to Tokyo, Japan late this year for the FIBA Asia Cup was the prize for the Philippines, who also remained undefeated last year, for topping the tournament.

Gilas’ original cast Marcus Douthit and Chris Tiu delivered the goods for the PH team while NCAA standout Garvo Lanete, who averaged 10 points in the tournament, stepped up anew.

Asia Inc earnings: China slowdown and Southeast Asia boom

    Thu Jul 12, 2012 12:42am EDT

    * China's slowing domestic demand takes bite out of earnings

    * Australia lags Asia, developed market peers on revisions

    * Hong Kong, Taiwan also feeling the heat

    * ASEAN earnings relatively resilient; valuations not cheap

By Anshuman Daga and Vikram Subhedar

SINGAPORE/HONG KONG, July 12 (Reuters) - Australian companies' fortunes faded even faster than those in recession-hit Spain over the last month, dragged down by a slowing Chinese economy that is also hurting companies in Taiwan and Hong Kong, Thomson Reuters StarMine data shows.

Projections for forward 12-month earnings for Australia have come off 5 percent over the past month, twice as much as the 2.4 percent cut to Spanish company forecasts. Across the Asia-Pacific, estimates have slipped 1.4 percent, and globally they have been cut by 1.2 percent.

Southeast Asia, however, is showing resilience and is expected to benefit further from a commodity boom, greater foreign investment and government-driven investment in infrastructure projects.

As the second-quarter earnings season kicks off, companies around the world are rushing to lower expectations. Some have singled out China as a source of weakness. Growth in the world's second-largest economy probably slowed to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter, economists polled by Reuters have said.

"North Asian companies are seeing the biggest downgrades. Generally investors and analysts are more forgiving on ASEAN than North Asia," said Markus Rosgen, head of Asia-Pacific equity strategy at Citigroup.

He said the biggest earnings risks appeared to be in the technology and materials sectors.

    SOMBRE DOWN UNDER

In Australia, the cuts flood in even after an already ugly month.

For mining major Rio Tinto , eight analysts have reduced their forecasts for 2012 earnings by an average 5.3 percent over the last two weeks, data from StarMine shows.

    And it doesn't stop there.

Credit Suisse analyst Paul McTaggart slashed his estimates for the company's 2013 earnings by a fifth on Thursday, saying the company's reliance on iron ore and copper leaves it highly exposed to any sustained downturn in Chinese construction.

Taiwan is also feeling the pain. Exports from Taiwan, one of Asia's most export-oriented economies, with an exports-to-gross domestic product ratio of 74 percent, shrank for the fourth straight month in June.

Analysts have cut 2012 earnings estimates for Acer by 6.9 percent on average over the past 30 days. From the seven analysts who have revised Acer's forecasts recently, the estimates have come off on average by a fourth.

With investor eyes glued to China, more bad news is expected.

At least half a dozen Chinese companies -- ranging from a steelmaker to the country's biggest airline -- have warned investors in the space of weeks that earnings would be softer than expected on slowing growth.

    WORK AND PLAY AND PROFIT

Southeast Asia is faring better, with companies in Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia holding firm.

In Singapore, companies are benefiting from the booming tourism industry and strong retail consumption as the city-state slowly transforms itself from a regional trade and financial centre into a place for both work and play.

Analysts have raised earnings estimates for hotel owner CDL Hospitality Trusts, shopping mall developer CapitaMalls Asia and property developer City Developments.

Southeast Asian markets have been the flavour of the year, with Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand figuring among the world's best performing stock markets in the first half.

In the first quarter, the Philippine economy grew 6.4 percent year-on-year, second only to China among Asian economies, and President Benigno Aquino told Reuters last week he expected the pace to accelerate in the second quarter.

"Major countries in the region appear to be in an investment phase, which we think is good timing. In the midst of a global slowdown, the ASEAN region can carry on with both fiscal and monetary support to help sustain growth," said Pauline Ng, investment manager at JPMorgan Asset Management in Singapore.

"Support from public spending and plans to increase production should have multiple benefits," said Ng, who helps manage about $3.5 billion invested in ASEAN equities.

Subdued interest rates in many countries give additional spending firepower to the fast-growing middle class.

But the heavy interest in Southeast Asian markets is stretching valuations which are now at significant premiums to the region.

The Philippines, for example, is currently trading at about 14.5 times forward earnings compared with a 9.5 multiple for the Asia-Pacific, StarMine data shows. Indonesia trades at 13 times.

Australia, meanwhile, trades at 10.5 times forward earnings and Hong Kong is roughly in line with the region.

PAL to buy 100 planes, offer more int’l flights

CEBU CITY -- Philippine Airlines (PAL) plans to acquire 100 more aircraft within the next five years and open additional international routes as part of its aggressive expansion program, a company executive said.

FLAG carrier Philippine Airlines plans to fly to more foreign destinations. -- jonathan l. cellona

Chris Lebumfacil, PAL passenger sales manager for the Visayas, said this will be in addition to their existing 38 planes, three of which are recently acquired modern Boeing 777-300 units.

PAL’s new routes and programs are in support of the growing number of international travelers going to the Philippines, he added.

Mr. Lebumfacil gave an update of PAL plans during Thursday’s Tourism Congress 2012 in Cebu organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He said PAL has flights to 15 East Asian destinations including Korea, India, Macau, Hong Kong but will be adding 17 more cities to its destinations.

He added that it already flies to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen and plans to operate more flights in other cities there.

PAL is also expanding its existing itinerary in Australia from the two cities of Sydney and Melbourne to add three more destinations.

It will also open flights to New Zealand, he revealed.

The airline also serves six cities in North America and Europe.

Once the Philippines gets an upgraded safety rating from the United States, the flag carrier plans to offer flights to Chicago, New York, San Diego, and Seattle in as well as Toronto in Canada in its destinations, Mr. Lebumfacil added.

“We’re working hand in hand with different government agencies to get out of that category. Once this is done, we can add more flights,” he said.

According to him, PAL used to have a flight to London and wants to resume this as well as add the cities of Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, and Madrid. “We would like to bring tourists… to visit to the Philippines,” he said. -- Marlen D. Limpag

USDA reports corn in 18 states hurt by drought
    Posted: July 15, 2012 - 12:13am

    Seth Perlman
Steve Niedbalski shows his drought- and heat-stricken corn while chopping it down for feed Wednesday in Nashville, Ill. Farmers in parts of the Midwest, dealing with the worst drought in nearly 25 years, have given up hope for a corn crop and are mowing over their fields and baling the heat-withered plants for livestock feed.

    By AP
DES MOINES, Iowa — For months, Illinois farmer David Kellerman held out hope for rain, even as the worst drought in nearly 25 years spread across the country.

He finally gave up when the temperature hit 108 three days in a row. Corn won’t develop kernels if it gets too warm during pollination, and Kellerman knew the empty cobs in the fields where he works would never fill out. Just after the Fourth of July, he and the neighbor he farms with took an extraordinary step: They cut down the entire crop and baled the withered plants to use as hay for their cattle.

Almost a third of the nation’s corn crop has been damaged by heat and drought, and a number of farmers in the hardest hit areas of the Midwest have cut down their crops just midway through the growing season. The USDA reports 18 states have been hurt by drought. But the nation could still see one of the largest harvests in U.S. history, thanks to new plant varieties developed to produce more corn per acre and better resist drought.

Kellerman said he was surprised his corn fared as well as it did, growing to a decent height even though there had been less than an inch of rain since mid-April. The dirt in the area where he farms near Du Bois, Ill., has the consistency of dust, but it wasn’t until the extreme heat “fried” the plants, that he lost hope.

“Genetics are much better,” he said. “Corn five years ago would never have lasted this long.”

Corn production has been improving steadily for decades, the result of scientific advances going back to the introduction of the first commercial hybrid in 1923. Genetic engineering accelerated the process in recent years and allowed the development of some strains that borrow DNA from other species for pest resistance.

Corn farmers expected this to be a record year when they planted, sowing 96.4 million acres, the most since 1937. The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted they would get 166 bushels per acre.

But after months with little or no rain and extreme heat in large portions of the Corn Belt, the USDA on Wednesday revised that estimate, saying it now expects farmers to average just 146 bushels per acre this year.

That would still be an improvement from a decade ago, when the average was about 129 bushels. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack still expects the nation to produce the third-largest corn crop in American history, even as he announced disaster-relief measures for farmers, like Kellerman, who have lost everything.

“It is important to point out that improved seed technology and improved efficiencies on the farm have made it a little bit easier for some producers to get through a very, very difficult weather stretch,” Vilsack said. “Our hope is rains come to the central part of the United States soon to be able to salvage what can be salvaged.”

The drought stretches from parts of Ohio to California. The historic drought that gripped Texas and other parts of the Southwest last year was more severe, but this year’s dry spell is notable for the sheer size of the affected land.

“To see something on this continental scale, where we’re seeing such a large portion of the country in drought, you have to go back to 1988,” said Brad Rippey, a USDA agricultural meteorologist.

That year, farmers saw corn yields, or the amount produced per acre, drop by nearly a third.

This year’s loss, so far, is expected to be half that — one reason why people like Bill Gates believe better crop technology will be the key to feeding the world as the population grows and climate changes.

Jeff Schussler, a senior research manager for DuPont Pioneer, said the company’s studies show corn hybrids today can produce 50 percent more bushels of corn per inch of water than those of 50 years ago. Working with genes that affect root and leaf development and plant reproduction, scientists also have created much more stable corn plants that can withstand a wider variety of climate conditions, he said.

“All these hybrids that have been produced in the last few years are built for drought tolerance so we have a little more hope that they will be able to withstand some of this heat, more so than they would have say 10 years ago,” said Garry Niemeyer, who grows corn and soybeans in Auburn, Ill., and is president of the National Corn Growers Association.

He said plants have been developed with a larger root mass, which allows them to reach deeper for water and hold more in reserve. Certain varieties also are capable of rolling up their leaves to slow moisture loss.

“There’s a lot of technology that goes into our corn crop,” Niemeyer said.

Still, it’s hard to say how the year will turn out with about half of the growing season to go.

Corn plants today withstand drought better than they did in 1988, but no variety exists that can produce significant yields without rain for six weeks and sustained temperatures above 100 degrees, said Tony Vyn, an agronomy professor at Purdue University.

“You get to the point where the water shortage is so severe that technology is not going to guarantee yield, even when you might have that expectation,” he said. “My experience thus far is that drought-tolerant hybrids are no silver bullet.”

Take my yoke (cross) upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart (an invitation to humble oneself to receive the gift of FAITH): and ye shall find rest unto your souls (not rest for the body for it means salvation of the soul). For my yoke is easy (truth symbolized by the cross), and my burden is light (with Jesus Christ's grace and mercy TRUTH can be 'carried')."
