In view of mapua's 2011 performance, is the quarter system effective?

I am stunned with the performance of Mapua in this year as foreseen in the recent licensure exams. Though we can never gauge the over-all standard of a university/institute with respect to its board performance(agree?), I am convinced that quality is improving as well as the standard..The recent board topnotchers are purely hypothetical models of a quarter system. I can conclude that the implemented leveled up the standard and boosted the quality of Mapua.

  2. #2
for me, mapuans 2011 board topnotchers will not stand for effectiveness of the quatersem.

i think we must based it on "passing rate" of our school in the board exam. this will be more reliable than just looking at the list of topnotchers.

yes, we may HAVE TOPNOTCHERS. but still there are a lot of casualties (non-passers).
thus, school standard is still below satisfactory.

  3. #3
^ Producing 8 Board Topnotchers is indeed an achievement. I am impressed.

    Congratulations MAPUA.

Pero kailangan pa rin ng improvement kasi halos kalahati pa rin sa bilang ang mga board takers from MAPUA ay board flunkers. Huwag maging content sa 51%na passing rate.

  4. #4
Likewise, I stated that Board exam can never gauge the over-all quality of the Institute....What am I stressing out is that there is some kind of deliberate actions taken by the Institute in order to improve the quality of graduates. On my viewpoint, I cannot deny on myself that Mapua has improved compared to the yesteryears' performances in the board exam, specifically on ECE..Looking at the previous statistics, Mapua ECE as far as I'm concerned didn't make it to land on the top 10 list and was accompanied by a very dismaying passing percentage..Therefore, the quality has improved.

  5. #5
    yes, the statistics is better.

BUT, i believe. the quarter system has not elevated the standards of mapua.

IT still BOILS DOWN to the competency, diligence, and IQ of MAPUANS.

some mapuans are really GOOD but i believe MOST are NOT>

  6. #6
^^ The Board exam is not the ONLY gauge in the evaluation of the over-all quality of education of an instituion but I do believe that it should still be considered as ONE of the basis in gauging the quality of graduates of an institution.

  7. #7
How can you say that it BOILS DOWN to the competency, diligence and IQ of mapuans? In the first place, due to the quarter system, students were given the opportunity to excel more, compete and work harder. In the end of the very long process, what is more significant is the character honed and not the books eaten. In fact, it gives us more focus in our academics.

  8. #8
afterall, (after finishing the quartersystem curriculum)

i believe many of mapuans are not competitive or excellent, etc.

    others barely remember their lessons.

Quarter system is just for students to graduate ahead of time (ideally). But not to mold them as the BEST engineers in town.

Semestral in the Passst yearsss had been effective on producing GREAT engineers who ventured locally and internationally.

  9. #9
Maybe MAPUA should evaluate its acceptance policy for Engineering. Baka tanggap lang ng tanngap kahit yong aptitude is short or below the required level for Engineering pero okay para sa ibang course.

  10. #10
Ooops,,I beg to disagree your first argument. What do you mean ideal? Is that really the purpose of quarter system? FYI quartersystem was implemented due to fact the Mapua wants to achieve ABET accreditation from US. To graduate ahead of time is just an ornament used by the Institute to attract students. Yes, it is one of the benefits that we can obtain from the system but it never turned out that the main point is to graduate ahead of time. That seems to be very hard since most the students are irregular (delayed). Quartersystem I believe helps students to instill urgency (as one of the core values of YGC). That is I think the reason why most companies still prefer Mapuans because of flexibility.

Comment: There are schools/departments that are underperforming and there are schools that are delivering good results. So its hard to tell whether or not, effective ang quarter-system which is common to all departments.

Notice the departments or schools that are underperforming. EE and CE. These are non-quota courses during our time. Its about time siguro na mag regulate ang Mapua ng enrolless, hindi tanggap lang ng tanggap and also control, maging mahigpit ulit in retaining students, existing pa ba ang 3-strike-policy? Sana maging mas mahigpit kahit sa non-quota courses.

Think law of supply and demand, consider Mapua as the biggest supplier of engineers, but PRC is limiting the demand by setting a low the national passing (That's Regulation is all about). Then obviously the passing rate of the biggest supplier should be more or less the same or slightly ahead or below the national passing rate. Kaya sometimes, as long as Mapua beats the national passing, it can be considered a success na rin somehow. But I still hope gradually mag regulate pa rin ang Mapua.

Mejo naghihigpit na Mapua ngayon sa mga programs na may board exam. May diagnostics exams, exit exams, correlation courses (review managed by Excel ata, not so sure though)

For a quarter system institution, mahirap talaga sumabay at karaniwan na reklamo ay walang matutunan or for short term memory lang yung knowledge. But with the help of these, diagnostics exams and exit exams, 'forced' yung students mag self study ng mga past courses.

Diagnostic Exam - implemented sa Math and Physics department. Its an exam every term covering all the math/physics courses you finished. Considered as a quiz in the current course.

Exit Exam - implemented in all courses. One of the pre requisites of higher courses.

Correlation Courses - 6-unit load before graduation. Again, I'm not sure if its really powered by Excel pero review center na yung dating nito (based sa naririnig ko).

Implemented to starting Batch 2007. Maybe, patikim pa lang itong 2011 results for next year. Sana mas maganda pa yung performance sa susunod. OT ata ako. wala lang may masabi lang. geeeez!

  13. #13
In the long run, I hope Mapua would be like Stanford, UC campuses except Berkeley campus, and other quarterm system college/universities in US. Not only to maintain grace under pressure, but also to have passion for it.
